I was quite surprised to find that the shrimp was the tastiest shrimp I've had at any seafood boil I've ever been to. I've eaten in Delaware and Florida for seafood boils, but this shrimp was out of this world. It was super fresh and juicy, even if it was frozen it seemed to be freshly caught. However, I was not a fan of the crawfish. It's possible that it is out of season hence it being less appetizing. Can definitely taste the fishy taste. Fantastic!!! So Mini-Me and her Bestie treated hubby and I to our Anniversary dinner here, because, we love seafood. It did not disappoint . We each ordered our own meal, I love green mussels and crab, so that was my my choice. Everyone else had lobster, shrimp, and crab. Several years ago, this type of restaurant popped up everywhere I went. Our first encounter was in Adams Morgan in DC, which we tried and loved. Since then, I've seen them sprinkled around in Brooklyn and NJ. Then. they all started to go away. Fast forward to today and I am glad to find this type of restaurant in NJ again. You can either select a set combo or choose individual seafood selections. We opted for the individual selections and ordered a 1 lb cluster of the dungeness crab, half pound shrimp, 1 lb frozen crawfish (live was out of season), and 1 lb of blue crabs. For every 2 lbs, they include 1 piece of corn and 1 potato. We chose the "boom" sauce which is a mixture of the available sauces (lemon pepper, garlic and Cajun). The Dungeness crab was the star of the meal. It was meaty, and tasted really great with the sauce. The blue crab was good too but 2 were light and 2 were meaty. Our waitress said 1 lb of blue crabs is usually around 3 crabs but sometimes its 4, so it's a trade off. The shrimp was pretty large. I think live crawfish would have been better than the frozen. We came here as a family of four and as soon as we walked in, we're greeted by a friendly smile who walked us over to our booth seats. The menu comes with prefixed combination of seafood or you can build your own seafood: clams, mussels, shrimps, crabs, lobsters, crawfish etc. Choose your seafood selection and then select a sauce and then the level of spice. You can also add the side orders of noodles, rice, potatoes, corn or the cobb or sausages. Side orders are extra costs. I selected to build my own because all of the prefixed orders have crawfish, which I'm not a fan. I ordered 1 pound of shrimps (no heads), corn and sausages. All with boom sauce and medium level spice. Yes, there's kids menu and yes, they have chicken fingers and wings which is a plus since my daughter doesn't like seafood. Having never been to a seafood boil before it was kind of exciting to get my hands dirty. They provide you with gloves and a disposable apron. We started with a dozen raw clams, they were fresh, well cleaned with 0 sand or grit in them. For our combo we got the "boom" flavor where they mix all 3 flavors, Cajun, garlic and lemon pepper. I regret not eating there more often last year because now we have to do takeout and it just isn't the same experience at all with the exception of the bomb food. I think the prices are very fair here. I would share a $33 combo with my friend and it was enough for us. My favorite items to order are the green mussels, shrimp with heads on, clams, and snow crab legs of course. The green mussels are a lot bigger than the black mussels, so the dollar difference is worth it. The mussels are also the easiest to eat in general because there is no peeling or cracking involved. The shrimps are always better with the head on so that you can suck the goodness out of it, even better tasting with white rice! And what's a seafood boil without crab? It's the most fulfilling work you will ever have to do for food. When you dine in, Seafood Boil supplies you with everything you need to dig in: a bib, gloves, picker, cracker, trash bucket, and more. I think cracking crabs and crawfish is pretty intuitive, but you can always ask the staff for tips if you need them. The crab legs are usually able to just be cracked in a spot and be pulled out in one piece. For me, the shrimp are the most annoying to peel and is never a smooth process. Also, some items automatically come with corn and potatoes so you don't necessarily need to order rice or another carb. I highly recommend getting the Boom mix, which is a mix of all 3 seasonings. I think most people will be able to handle the medium level of spice, which has the perfect kick but will not kill you. I mentioned this place to my fiancé some time ago as one of our "must visit" foodie place. I'm so glad we did since we are both seafood junkies. The menu was pretty straight forward; you can order anything from the combos or make your own dish. Since it was our first time, we went with combo #1 since it seemed to include all of the things we wanted to try. The food didn't take no more than 10 minutes to come out which I loved! Passed by this joint one day on my way back from Trader Joes, did some research and remembered David Chang's "Ugly Delicious" show about a Cajun Vietnamese hybrid cuisine that is so popular in Texas where Vietnamese spices and sauces is married to a typical Cajun seafood boil and I was hooked.......... Enter "Seafood Boil" in The Shoppes of North Brunswick strip mall, a rather spare but spotless little restaurant with long heavy wooden tables in order to accommodate not only large groups of diners {this is communal dining at it's finest} but also the butcher's paper to sop up the inevitable spills. The menu is simple with appetizers that range from freshly shucked raw oysters {$19.00/dozen} to buffalo chicken wings but you come here for the combos....4 in number priced from $33.00 to $59.00 depending on what you have your little heart set on....Then you get to choose what flavor of marinade you desire, Cajun {basically Zatarains or some variations there of} lemon pepper {pretty much self explanatory} garlic butter (and they do mean GARLIC!} and finally "Boom" which is a diabolical mixture of all three and is amazing on just about anything including steamed rice...... We ordered the #4 which had snow crab legs,shrimp,crawfish,clams,fat black mussels, fat green mussels, corn and potatoes in the medium spicy boom sauce with steamed rice and extra sauce {$2.50 but well worth it} the gear arrives....Lobster bibs,latex gloves,nut crackers,seafood picks, buckets for shells,and disposable plates,forks and spoons.....this is going to be such fun! Then the "Bag" hits the table, steaming hot, fragrant and just chock full of the ocean's finest. The buttery,garlicky spicy sauce takes on all the juices of the shell fish and drizzled over the rice is a dish within itself, a splash of Champagne vinegar brought from home just brings out all the sweetness from the crab and shrimp and sucking heads and pinching tails is the order of the day with the fat little craw fish. This is gloriously messy work but well worth it and the table looks like a science project gone awry but everyone is smiling....and just a little shiny from all that buttery sauce..
