Those who pay the bills? Each time I've come in here, I've had one gripe or another. Either they are too busy chatting amongst themselves to say hello or goodbye, or they're just not super arsed in being friendly. I get that they're busy, but this is not a cheap gym by any stretch of the imagination so it would be nice to be received with a bit more courtesy. I arrived today at 1.42pm to register for spinning class at 2pm. They say that registration opens 15 mins before each class, so despite being there and ready to go, the receptionist turned to another spinner and I telling us we'd have to wait to register. Now this isn't some high tech scenario on a computer that literally doesn't open til the set time - it's jotting your name down on a piece of paper. I would like to say in full disclosure that the receptionist was tending to someone else at the time, but if she had enough time to turn to us and tell us we'd have to wait til quarter to for signing our name, surely she'd have had enough time to pass us the registration paper. Thankfully which is what another staff member did, once he heard the comment from his colleague. It took him about 0.2 seconds to pass us the sheet. A bit of common sense wouldn't go astray in situations like this. I'm still a major fan of this gym and most of the staff so far have been great, but it would be great if there was a bit less of a "Computer Says Noooooo" attitude in here (What an episode that was!)

I need to update this review with major news!…read more After a hard training, I usually go as far as the shower and don't even take the time to dry my hair before I go home. This time I felt like pushing my boundaries, wearing my bikini in public, and going to the spa. 1* For the spa: It's called spa but it's basically a huge swimming pool, a sauna, a steam room, a jaccuzzi, and tropical showers - meaning different water temperature. The place is warm - not too warm ! - and clean. I have a bit of an OCD when it comes to hygiene and this place has my stamp of approval. 1* For the sauna: Dry heat as you would expect. The interior is made of wood and the heat place is made of stones. There are 3 different levels and - of course - as the heat goes up the highest seats are warmer. It's not too hot so you can have a good sweat. Don't stay too long though and do not wear jewelry - you will get burnt. 1* For the showers: I love to alternate sauna / medium heat shower to cold / steam room. Some people like to take a cold shower right away but I don't appreciate the extreme change in temperature. I go for medium heat shower and possibly cold after that, it has to be step by step. 1* For the steam room: What a great sensation to be in a steam room! The heat and humidity is no overwhelming and that's a plus. You can't stay very long - as per usual - but you can still handle a good moment. Also there is an ambiance music played in the room to help fully relax. This place is a treat ! You eliminate the bad toxines in your body, you work on your breathing system, and you relax all at once. I haven't tried the swimming poor nor the jaccuzzi but that should happen very soon. 1* For the hair dryer: OMG Those hair dryers are so amazing it only take a few minutes to get my hair completely dry. And my hair is long to my waist. And not easily cooperative when it comes to drying! I need to take a picture of how everything is set up, but in short you can find 4/5 hair dryers and 1 hair straightener along a long mirror. You have space to put your brush or other hair/make-up products and get ready. Even when it's busy girls always make space for one another. Very friendly changing room ! 1* For the free trial: I asked for a few trial tickets for my boyfriend. They couldn't give any because this gets sent from the headquarter. At first I thought it was a bummer but then I remembered that a couple of months ago I received free trial tickets by post and a 5 day pass as well ! Should I remove a star ? It's true there should be more flexibility on that aspect but on the other hand they send a lot of incentives by post. I leave this star for now :D 1* For the beauty centre: Today I noticed a new poster in the entrance promoting a new beauty centre. Opening soon facilities for waxing, semi-permanent make-up, manicure, and pedicure. There was something else but I don't remember... That need to be done after closing the centre every day for safety reasons and without people on the site. Dear customers, please use flip flops all time and don't seat on anything without own towel - this message is specially addressed to all ladies/girls so important. Extremely disappointing experience, terrible management…read more Westwood Clontarf is a prime example of how bad management can completely ruin a place. The facilities themselves might look decent on the surface, but the way this gym is run is genuinely awful. Management is unprofessional, unhelpful, and dismissive. Issues are either ignored or handled with zero accountability, and communication is shockingly poor. Instead of trying to resolve problems or support members, management seems more interested in deflecting responsibility and making excuses. Customer service is inconsistent at best, and when you actually need help, don't expect anyone in charge to step up. For a gym that charges premium prices, the experience is nowhere near premium. I would not recommend Westwood Clontarf to anyone who values basic respect, transparency, or competent management. There are far better gyms in Dublin that actually care about their members.

The good: * Changing area (cabins) has been fully rebuilt * Staff is great, they let children play and have fun (not like in Fantasia where my 16 year old bother had been asked to leave the small six people jacuzzi (how stupid is that?) * They have slides open every 45 minutes or so (during weekends only) * Very warm showers, almost like Japanese baths * There's sauna * Toddler's pull area * The price €7 per adult and kids under 3 years are for free then it's €4 * Plenty of lockers that are at the pull area, so if you need anything to grab, it's right there (just have your own padlock) * Underground car park (€1 token, unlimited stay) * Vending machines with swimming gear * Spectator area that is accessible without paying for the entrance The bad: * Slides are open only during weekend This is how good it is. Pull is clean, kids and parents are all friendly.

But on a day when you go with no lessons its quite a nice pool and much better than the old dark pongy pool that used to be the Ballymun swimming pool by the old shopping center. The changing room is all unisex and smells quite badly whenever I'm there and the toilets need cleaning more regularly.

The benefit of a yearly membership plan is not only the potential of a discount but also the ability to make a one-off payment. This ability is a necessity for me, being a student my income is irregular, so I can not reliably depend on money being in my account the same day every month. Despite this I joined back, I tried to sign up with my credit card to avoid any missed payments, but the Ben Dunne website insists on direct debits. And surprise surprise three months later, I miss a payment while I was changing jobs, what an idiot I am for forgetting the exact day I am meant to pay you with NO REMINDERS. So what would you expect would be standard business practice by the many subscription services that plague us today in this situation? A friendly email advising you, you missed a payment but no worries here's a link to complete payment, please pay in the next 7 weeks to continue your membership? A receptionist telling you you cant come in until you complete this months payment? I think that's all fair enough. Nope, Ben Dunne will CANCEL your MEMBERSHIP with NO WARNING and expect you to join back again as a whole new member with a WHOLE NEW JOINING FEE. I had an issue with Virgin Atlantic once regarding a flight and the response was speedy and apologetic. I would fly with them again in an instant and recommend them to friends. The Regency hotel group management obviously don't care and really don't deserve your money or my recommendation. The thing that makes it a difficult review is that the staff and management within the gym are really excellent and so friendly (they learn your name!). They deserve to keep their jobs so hopefully the gym membership will remain large enough. The hotel management could learn from them.

We made friends with everyone even if the friendship only lasted during our visit. Because of the time of year, late September, the water was cold but once in it and acclimated, it felt amazing. Invigorating is the best way to describe the adventure. This year-round swimming spot was once a men's only bathing area. I can't wait to do it again.

As a student forced (yes we are required to for our degrees) to pay UCD over €250 a year for this…read morerubbish, only to be told it's extra to use half the facility, I wouldn't bother going near this place. I wouldn't even mind that it's an extra €100 for "full access" (so that's over €350 now) but it's not "full access". You are BANNED from using the pool side gym which is air conditioned and forced to use the small "performance gym" for most of the time you aren't in lectures or meetings. As such I can only comment on the performance gym which is: small, very hot (to the point I have nearly thrown up from training before, not due to exhaustion or over training, but purely from the heat), and lacking in good equipment. One example is there are only 2 rowing machines for students to use in the entire facility since we cannot access the pool side gym. One of which for a long time had a broken foot strap which was "fixed" with a shoe lace, and the other which had a broken monitor so you hadn't a clue of your split time or strokes per minute. The resistance of the machines also was almost certainly broken as it felt significantly lighter at full resistance than any other university gym I've visited before in my undergraduate degree. On top of all that, you are forced to bring a towel (something that just means either paying UCD more money for washing that towel if you live on campus if you go to the gym every day or paying UCD more money to get the towel from reception, either way you are effectively paying UCD per gym trip on top of the €350 you have to pay to be allowed this privilege), supposedly for "hygiene" even though you're meant to use the disposable paper roll and antibacterial spray to clean equipment so not sure what the exact expected use is for. Plus you cannot give any feedback on this. Go to any staff member and they will either pretend like it's perfectly fair that on top of the tens of thousands in fees, this forced gym membership, and the cost to actually use the gym because of this ridiculous rule about towels that is unique to UCD for a shit service, or they will blame an "external company" and feign ignorance regarding any complaints procedure to make you go away. All in all, waste of money, awful place for students and the lack of capacity internally for feedback is shocking. Serious change needed and if I was in government, I'd be wanting to know where UCD is putting the money they are getting for student facilities because it's definitely not going towards students.
