It was recommended that we try the best Fish and Chips place in London. It's close to a station and short walk. We had a day of touring and leaded here for dinner. The place had a take away on the corner and the restaurant (sit down) is down the side street. We were seated immediately and reviewed the menu. We ordered the traditional fish and chips and wow it was not a couple of small pieces of fish but a good size filet. Fried golden brown and served with excellent chips. We topped the meal off with desert and that made a great meal. The service was a little slow and not as attentive as we'd hoped but overall and excellent meal. Excited to finally be hereMy first time here! I lived in London for years and I had never heard of this place before tiktok. I have to say it's really great. We were on a vacation so we booked a lunch on a weekday (had a reservation just in case) and we were the only people in the dining room until the very end of our meal. Totally private dining. It was pretty cool. Food was all great. My husband had his first mushy pees and fish & chips and loved it. Not my favorite fish & chips of all time in London but still very good. The spaced is really beautiful and aesthetic as well so I would absolutely recommend it to people. What I would do differently next time is go to the counter service bar (attached but next door) which has limited seating, but similar offerings for less money. Wife and I made the journey out to SeaShell thanks to a post I found on Reddit with lots of good things to say about SeaShell. SeaShell of Lisson Grove was our first experience with the real deal fish & chips since my wife and I have never really had it properly before (maybe ever?). Anyway, it was alright. Defintely big portions. My wife and I shared a large order when a small would've definitely sufficed. Fish skin really grosses me out, so I had to pick around it. We were staying in the neighborhood. So on the way back to our airbnb after the London Marathon we stopped in because I was starving. We got two orders of the fish and chips and I devoured mine. Delicious. The staff were friendly, the place was clean, and the food was good. We went back another day and got the same thing. I don't know why when a restaurant/takeaway has become well known, everybody goes there and fail to notice that the standard of the food has gone down the drain. Is it because it is "famous"? I live not far away from this place and I still remember when it was voted the best fish and chips in London. This was in the 80's NO MORE I say. To get served lukewarm soggy overcooked black in appearance chips was the last straw. I complained to the establishment some time ago about it and today, once again, I gave them a try. I've dine here for over 40 years. This is likely the very best restaurant for fish lovers in London. I personally love Dover sole, and the Seashell serves it for close to half of what other restaurants charge. I made a point to stop here when I visited London because I heard Dua Lipa say in an interview that it was her favorite place for Fish n Chips. So I made a point to stop here for lunch on the first day. It was fine, though I really couldn't tell anything that made it stand out as the "best". There's certainly nothing wrong with it. I got the standard fish n chips, you got a big portion, I couldn't come close to finishing all the chips. It was a good value for your money. The dining area was kinda small, I think people usually just get it to go. They had a few drinks available, including a few beers. Service was pretty fast, and staff were all nice. The restaurant is split into two: they have a quick service take-away side and a full service, sit-down restaurant on the other. We ate at the take away side. We came here on a Thursday for lunch - right as they were opening around noon. We ordered the battered cod with chips. It came out within 10 minutes. The fish and chips were piping hot and the portions were huge! I split my order with my sister and we could barely finish it. Paired great with their homemade tartar sauce and malt vinegar. I had my first proper London fish and chips here at the Seashell, and let me tell you, this place has set some high standards for me. The menu has a whole page on the different varieties of fish that you can have battered. Did I also mention that the fries that come with it are unlimited?!! I was pretty basic and went with the cod and a side of salad. The piece of cod I received was fresh, crispy, moist, and flaky; like what more can I ask for?! The portion was also bigger than any piece that I have had in the States. The salad was fresh and I loved the simple dressing on it. I also had a taste of my friend's chips, which were also yummy. Service was also top notch; our waitress was sweet and checked up on us often. Service fee is not included here, so remember to leave some tip! The only setback is that this place is sort of expensive, with the fish and chips starting at 15 quid and going up to 20. Otherwise I would be here every weekend lol. To begin, inside it is stuffy with low ventilation and seating outside isn't optimal for big groups. The service was also slow. The popcorn cod and fish filet was bland, oily, and didn't pair well with the tar tar sauce. The grilled seabass was good, but I wouldn't recommend this place for a typical "fish & chips" visit. When I visited this place I had no idea of its popularity; I however came in with great expectations after all I was eating fish and chips in fricken LONDON. I picked this location because it was early in the morning and it was one of the few establishments that were open. The place was clean, service was just regular I guess, and ordering was simple. While waiting for my food to arrive I started glancing at other peoples trays and my excitement grew. I will start by saying that presentation was beautiful, I could tell that the fish and chips were fried to perfection and that someone had taken great care of the fish, the potatoes and the batter during the frying portion. When I finally took a bite, I found that the integrity and quality of the fish were excellent and that the potatoes were fresh! My biggest disappointment was seasoning, I mean...do they even know what salt is? I sat there trying to fix or somehow amp the flavor but it was a lost battle. I asked the cashier for salt, and he told me they didn't have any (surprise, surprise right?!) He directed me to the vinegar that was already on the table for any added seasoning but vinegar isn't salt. He seemed bothered by my request as if I had asked for something absurd. It was without a doubt one of the saddest meals I've ever had and I have worked in hospitals for a big portion of my life. Being a complete tourist in London - I suppose the ratings might be correct. Maybe there is some amazing fish and chips restaurant in London that I didn't hear about - - but this was the place we knew about, and this was the place the concierge recommended. Every single cab driver seemed to know it, too. So - upon arriving in the city of London, the very first thing we did, prior to even getting to the room, was hit up "the best fish and chips in London" - Sea Shell of Lisson Grove. Now, perhaps I've been subjected to mediocre fish and chips for all of my American life... Perhaps I tasted mediocre in London and didn't know the difference between this and "amazing".... In any case, I was blown away! The fresh fish was expected, but the batter was SO light that at no time did I feel like I was eating something not quite healthy. Excepting the "chips" (french fries, in other words) this fried fish felt as healthy as a salad w/ some ham on it. When asked what I wanted for a drink, I realized I have an irresistible urge for beer at the mere thought of fried foods, but didn't like some of their beers, and didn't recognize others until... GUINNESS. OK, that'll do. It turns out Guinness in the UK is better than Guinness in the US, but nowhere near that of Guinness in Ireland. Not surprising, but due to proximity, I hoped. We also shared an order of calamari, and a fish soup that was on the menu. This fish soup was outstanding, and the calamari was surprisingly good, though nothing like the calamari one would expect. Whole pieces of squid, battered in something very light, lightly fried and only somewhat crisp, but nonetheless quite delicious, and perfectly seasoned. The chips deserve a mention also. Very lightly crisp on the oustide but so soft, and so hot on the inside. Again, the common theme at Sea Shells was that none of it was battered heavily, or fried to a ,massive crisp. For someone like me who doesn't really like overly crisp things - - this restaurant hit a homerun. My dish cost about 12 pounds, if I recall correctly. When ordering, you get a choice of about 5 fish, including the common cod and a rock salmon. I ordered the haddock, which was precisely what I wanted - thick, juicy, and flaky. The serving was generous, and while I devoured the whole fish before Rob was even halfway through his, I found that I had barely any room left for the chips. Keep in mind that I did finish the calamari virtually by myself first. In any case, I feel really lucky to have dined at Sea Shell. I'd go here time and again as my first meal when in London. Touristy? Perhaps. But I maintain that tourist food is not necessarily bad food, and places like Sea Shell are the exception. read more

Let's just clarify a couple of things.... there are 2 parts to this place: Part 1: There's a formal, sit-down full service restaurant, relatively priced. Part 2: There's an informal, walk-up counter for simpler fish and chips. If you order at the latter and want to eat there, you'll be standing to eat at a counter. Or you might grab a couple of small seats outside (if the English weather allows). I've only gone for Part 2 but really like the place. They are always busy which is something you want in a seafood place. And they offer a variety of fish at different price points. This is a little gem near the London Business School. One of the best things about this restaurant is that it has the friendliest waitress. There is also a good sit down place with a large beautiful fish tank in the back! If you come here around 5 PM, there would be barely anyone, so you can sit anywhere you want. Most of us ordered the traditional Fish & Chips with various fish styles. I got Cod for example, and it was absolutely delicious.
