I'm glad we did, because Shawn really gave us some interesting and useful information in a fun way! Our group of 15 or so consisted of people from abroad, different states, and even locals! I don't want to give too much away, but I would suggest you give it a shot. You're not obligated to pay anything more than what you think it was worth. If you are considering a tour of the Public Market, do not hesitate...take THE MARKET EXPERIENCE tour! It is not only a "taste so good" tour but also, more importantly than that, it is a learn about the Public Market tour: history, rationale, access, operations, and more. Did mention that the food we tasted was delicious. Our checked luggage was filled with jars of jams & preserves along with bottles of vinegars and oil. And when carry-on bags were searched, TSA was asking "What is this?" Some of the answers were: smoked salmon, dried fruit, cherries, and snap peas. After touring with Jake, we spent another two hours going back to eat, drink, and buy our way through all of the shops and stalls that we mentally noted during his fantastic tour. Again, do not hesitate or wonder or worry like we did. We lolly-gagged, hemi-hawed, and put-putted around and almost did not get a reservation. Not because we were lazy but because we could not register three people and finally just decided to email Jake and explain that we needed three slots but could only register for one. He responded expeditiously and our party of three for two slots were all set. When next in Seattle, we will take The Market Experience tour again...along with the Seattle 101 tour. No doubt. Led by the lovely couple, Jake and Becky, who invented this wonderful 5 stay tour over 5-6 years ago, and has been a great success since! I first heard about this as I was staying in a hostel across the street from Pike Market and one of the events was to do this tour. I am so happy I did, because it really gives you a wonderful tour around the downtown Seattle and inside the large Pike Market. Did I mention that Jake had the hook ups when it came to the Pike Market! I think this was my BEST part of the tour. But before I go into details about that, lemme discuss the different places you get to see during the tour. The tour is an hour and a half-two hours and is a nice size group that consist of about 15-16 people. There is no need to pre-pay, you simply tip and pay based of your experience at the end. Some of the places you get a chance to visit are: Pike Market venders, Gum Wall, Starbucks, and Beecher's Homemade Cheese. I learned SO much history from Jake, such as: Pike Market picks what vendors they want in the market and vendors have to fill out an application. In addition, vendors have to pay 10% of what they make to Pike Market. Starbucks has been at the same location since 1976 (ballin'!) and has the original logo! FUN FACT: There are over 400 Starbucks in Seattle and the one located in Pike Market is rated #2 best coffee in America. They have wonderful flower bouquet shops that are $10-15 dollars and you're buying them from farmers that grew them on their own! There are names on the tiles in the market that resemble the donors of people that helped to build the Pike Market. Jack was my tour guide for both tours that I had here: Seattle 101 and The Marketplace Experience. I would encourage anyone to try both tours as they are both very informative and fun! I was amazed by all the facts he told us - made us feel real connection with the city. He had genuine answers to our questions and was very organized. It's a 2 hour tour and it's about a 2 mile trek. It's generally downhill because you end up by the ferries wheel. Our guide was funny and informative. It's a good way to see the city I recommend doing it as early in your visit as you can so you can go back to those areas where you'd like to re-visit. Wow. Awesome tour by Jake! We takes LOTS of tours, and this one is a standout. For our 4 day visit to Seattle, we took 3 tours. My only regret is not taking this one first. We did the Seattle 101. This tour was the perfect introduction to the city. Jake, our tour guide, walked a nice line between education and entertainment. Informative elements were punctuated with a mix of corny and clever jokes. Jake did a nice job of keeping us engaged and on the move without wearing the group out. Highly recommend this tour. My advice would be to take this tour early in your trip to Seattle. Jake's tours are a blast. We only managed to squeeze in Seattle 101 towards the end of our trip and my only regret is not having done it sooner. The tour opened my eyes to the history of the city and gave me insight of Seattle from a local's point of view. Jake is also absolutely hilarious and I love the story of how him and his wife came to setting up these walking tours, how they want everyone to be able to enjoy the city as much as they do hence, the pay as you feel, system. They're not endorsed by anyone, so his recommendations are truly his - it really is like having a (knowledgeable) friend in the city. Our tour, unfortunately, was on a cold rainy day but the 2 hour tour flew by in no time at all. I do recommend a waterproof jacket of sorts if it is raining cause that rain and wind will get you. Also, I come from Arizona so disclaimer here, my tolerance for rain and cold is on the low side, to say the least. We took the market tour with Shawn. I had initially booked it for only 2 but a friend of mine had time to come along with us. Shawn was nice enough to let her join too, without a reservation. Shawn was great and really funny. He kept everyone engaged. We tasted some fresh smoke salmon and it was amazing. I don't like fish but this was really good!! I've done the paid yours (Seattle Underground) and thought I'd give this one a try with my whole family. We had a tour guide with blue hair (can't remember his name). It started off good with some info about the area and as we walked to the market it moved to recommendations on restaurants which felt a bit like a walking yelp review. I was expecting a lot of history but instead it turned into a few tidbits of local lore with a lot of jokes about how white people steal things and how the Indians were victimized.l by white people who just wanted to take their land and possessions. As a white guy himself he may have felt guilty but it was clear he made the some in the tour uncomfortable with his continued racist jokes. The tour lasted 90+ minutes and was actually a bit too long given the little historical information we received. We gave him a tip for his effort, but I can't recommend him or the tour as a good use of your time. I do recommend the other paid tours - there's more history shared and no jokes about any races of people so far more of an inclusive experience. read more

We, my husband and I, did the Market Experience tour with Sean. He was amazing- we reserved online and arrive a few minutes late since we were a little lost, once we showed up he called us by our names and it was a nice surprise. He did an amazing job with everyone and was able to connect with each person in the group. We are going to do the Seattle 101 in the next day or two. Sean even bought some salmon so we could have a taste and it was amazing! The relationship he has with the vendors is great as well. Sean even points out some places to eat and drink after the tour which was great as we went to one place and they were also amazing and easy to chat with. I would recommend this tour for sure and feel pretty confident the Seattle 101 will be just as amazing! Let's start the year, 2014, right with this 5-star review! Seattle Free Walking Tour is a free Tour, but tips are always welcome! Remember the free tour is able to continue because of your tips! Don't be cheap, even a buck or two helps...more the better! Jake (the BOSS) was a wonderful, easy going tour guide. I went on both tours since I had an open morning in Seattle. Market tour starts at 9:30 AM; Seattle 101 starts at 11 AM. Meet: Victor Stienbruek Park (2000 Western Ave) at the corner of Western Ave and Virginia St. At the north entrance to Pike Place Market....Jake tends to have everyone wait by the little island (looks like an old bus stop) between the park and Starbucks, but he will check the park before starting his tour. I would definitely recommend both tours, but the Market Experience is a MUST! Since Jake knows most of the vendors, you will be able to get 10% off and yummy samples from every vendor that Jake takes you. He will also give you a history of the market and bits of information about each vendor that you visit. Since I was solo on my first tour, it was a VIP experience meeting the vendors. No guide book, website, or even review anywhere can better replicate the experiences on these walking tours that I took here, even if you paid exuberantly (and this place is "pay-what-you-feel"!). Easily the most I've learned about Seattle in such a small amount of time. Keep in mind that Jake's business model is "pay-what-you-feel", which means there's no cost if you didn't like it, but you should definitely pitch in if you found it enjoyable and/or informative. Disclaimer: I gave Jake $35 for both tours, because of how knowledgeable, passionate, professional, and composed he was throughout the tours. It's incredible to me that he's been doing this for three years, and how often he modifies and adapts his tours to fit the current "meta" of what's new and awesome around the places he tours. More context. I did two of Jake's tours back-to-back. The first was "Pike Place Market 101". Wow, there's a reason it has its own tour. Pike Place Market has a very rich and very cool history. If you ever wanted to know where Starbucks originated, or how to get the best (exclusive Pike Place blend), or exactly where the original (not oldest, there's a difference!) Starbucks was, Jake will talk about it. The passion Jake has for explaining and exploring this culture niche of Seattle is awesome, and I'm sure he'll create the same excitement for you as he did for me. This tour featured a ridiculous amount of food samples. It was awesome trying different kinds of fruits, seafood (salmon, seafood jerky), and getting the lowdown (including exclusive discounts at certain vendors just for being on the tour!) on how to navigate the market, as well as where to find the highest quality of everything you want to find (mostly seafood, but there's flowers, fruits, vegetables, and a bunch of other farmers market items, as per norm). Anyway, back to the learnings. You learn what a high stall is, and how it differs from a daily stall. You learn about Post Alley and the history behind what the market looked like when it first started almost 100 years ago, to what it looks like now. You also get to learn what the difference is between Post Alley and the ominous-sounding "Sanitary Market" (it's interesting, and less weird than you'd expect). You get to visit the gum wall, which is, while incredibly disgusting, kind of fascinating as you can see how the culture of something random like this turned into a defining cultural/art(?) piece of the market. Just don't accept any dares to eat the gum on the wall (apparently this is a thing). The best display on this tour was the fish throwing folks. Jake will personally introduce you to it, and it's an incredible sight to see. Fishermen throwing fish back and forth a few times -- and just for kicks, there was apparently a new guy, so the person Jake introduced us to threw an OCTOPUS at him, to see if he would catch it (he didn't, but the reaction amongst the tour group, as well as the fishermen, seemed to be pretty good regardless). This experience alone made the tour for me, but everything else in this tour (and the next one) really helped solidify that this was a premium quality tour to go on. I'm not even half done yet! The second tour I went on was the main tour, "Walking Tour 101" (Seattle 101), which talked more about the broader history of Seattle (including Pike Place Market, a little bit, but not too much, since it has its own tour). We were shown the meaning of the totem in pioneer square (it's not a good meaning, hahaha), why the Romanesque architecture of pioneer square reminded me of gastown in Vancouver, Canada (nice little tidbits), and why folks like chief Seattle was exiled from his own city (kind of a crappy sad story but it's the only low point of the tour in terms of emotion. Jake is still on point with his facts and his speaking skills). Jake also talks about the history of Seattle flood plains, and why certain decisions were made for buildings that were being built during the terraforming of Seattle's seawall. He also touches on how Seattle survived after the lumber industry fell apart, and how the Klondike gold rush revitalized the local economy, as well as what the original city of Seattle was called before it was renamed (no spoilers!). The second tour required much more walking, since we go all the way from Pike Place Market to right out to where the wharfs / piers are. You get to learn why the piers are all slanted, what's going on with the seawall, and what the plans are in terms of revitalizing the Seattle waterfront. There's so much to talk about, which is why the main walking tour is 1.5 hours in duration instead of just an hour. A lot is covered, so come willing to learn with an open mind! I'd recommend this to anyone and everyone wanting to learn more about the awesome city of Seattle. Jake is an awesome person and I know he cares deeply about the quality of the tours he gives. The tours with Jake were phenomenal. We took both Seattle 101 and Pikes Place. Seattle 101 is a 2 hour tour that walks a couple miles around downtown Seattle. Jake shows some of the obvious tourist traps and gives insider tips and bits of history you wouldn't get out of a guide book. For example, he told us about a local fav Irish pub just a bit out of the tourist area that had a fish and chips happy hour special for $5. We went there later and it was a deliciously good deal. Near the end of the tour he stopped us at a restaurant on the pier and they gave us a snack sized serving of clam chowder and fries. The Pikes Place tour took us through the market and lasted about an hour. He gave us the history of the market and talked about how it operates. Along the way Jake stopped us at vendors booths where we sampled gourmet foods. The pickle brine shots were my favorite :) As we toured through the city Jakes great personality shined. Other city regulars along his path would say hi to Jake with a big smile. He is obviously a positive impact on his small path through this city. What a great way to start off our exploration of Seattle by going on the free Market, Market, Market tour with Jake. We met up on a rainy Thursday morning when the clouds were sitting very low and it rained all morning long. It was only me, my cousin, and one other person on the tour with Jake. Jake was very informative, entertaining, and funny so it made the hour long tour very enjoyable. He talked about the history of the market, how the market gets set up in morning, and how it's always changing day to day. Then Jake led us down to the non known parts of the market where vendors sell various knick knacks. He also led us to his favorite and popular spots and got us food samples of a lot of items in the market. Mmmmmm....the ginger jelly on smoked salmon. You also get a discount from various vendors if you mention that you were on the Free Walking Tour with Jake. After the market tour, we were going to meet up again and go on the Experience Seattle Tour but it was canceled due to the rainy weather. Bummer! Definitely check it out! As of right now on my road trip, this was the BEST part of this trip. We are so thankful to have been on this tour because we would have gotten LOST! Definitely go on this tour before you go through the market place because You are able to go throughout a majority of the market place while stopping by all the famous places, like the Rachel the Pig, Gum Wall, and the first Starbucks, all places we already wanted to go see, but he made it easier for us to find later! Jake also gives little tips, like where the Pike Place Chowder and the clean bathrooms! ;) We also were able to meet some really sweet vendors with great, delicious products WITH A DISCOUNT! We did a back to back tour on a Sunday morning where the groups were much smaller than the norm (per the tour guides). We did the Seattle 101 first and then the marketplace tour. It worked out perfect because we learned a lot of good history from the 101 tour, by the time of the second tour, we were hungry for some snacks as it is closer to the lunch hour. The marketplace tour came with lots of free snacks from the diff local vendors in the market which helped with what to buy later. Joe was our Seattle 101 tour guide and he was hilarious. He was also very friendly and knowledgeable. Jake was our marketplace tour and he is the owner of the company. I loved how he knew so many of the local merchants by name. We did both tours with Jake when we were in Seattle, and both tours were absolutely amazing. The Seattle 101 tour was a little over 2 hours long and we walked about 2 miles, but there were so many stops that it didn't seem like too much walking. We wouldn't have ventured out on our own to certain parts of the city had it not been for this tour. Also, he had a ton of great tips on happy hours in Seattle and things to do. I personally liked the Pike Place tour more but that's probably because it was shorter at about an hour, and it had more free samples. The smoked salmon samples were the best even if it was at 9 in the morning. Jake is totally friendly, and entertaining. You can totally tell he loves his city since it comes across in the tour. It's a free 2 hours long walking tour that begins in Victor Steinbrueck park and ends at waterfront. All you need to do is to register your name on Seattle 101 tour walk website. Our guid, Joe, was so knowledgable and friendly! He is also very entertaining to listen to. Wear comfortable shoes and have a sweater in case. It got little chilly as tour went on and this was during Memorial Day weekend. I parked at Public parking but it cost $19 for 2 hours or more!!! I ended up going on Jake's Market Experience tour and Seattle 101 tours my first day in Seattle. The Market Experience tour met at 9:30am and we spent the next hour exploring the market and experiencing all of Jake's favorite places. He gave historical background and insight on the market, while we were getting delicious samples along the way. Almost the whole group that went on the Market Experience tour decided to stick around and go on the Seattle 101 tour. Jake took us around the city and gave us some tips on his favorite places. I felt like I knew my way around the Pike's Market/Waterfront/Pioneer Square area after the tour, which was helpful on the rest of my trip. Let me preface with the fact that I was a tour guide for a large public university on the east coast for three years. There was a lot of talk about history and such but even if you're not a history fan I still recommend going and getting to know the city. I can only imagine how lost we would be without a lot of his tips. We would've wasted a lot of time on nonsense and we wouldn't have known any sense of direction. Plus it was a great way to begin our little adventure. It is a two hour tour so make sure to eat breakfast and rest your legs before you go. There is a lot of standing. My body wasn't used to the downtown Seattle walks so it took its toll for sure. It was my wife and I so I gave him $20. I really have to sense of idea on how to tip someone on a free walking tour but he spent his time and knowledge on us and I hope that he made a good amount in that time frame. read more

My family & I took Jakes walking tour of Pike Place Market & we were very impressed. You could see how proud he was to be showing us around the market & introducing us to various vendors. We got a great insiders perspective on how the market operates, how Starbucks got its name & siren emblem, how the vendors vie for their spots every day & who has seniority for various booths & how vendors are all carefully screened to add variety to the market. It was a super busy day - a Saturday - so we certainly saw what Jake called "the pike market shuffle"! It was really helpful to have him show us around beforehand so we could navigate the crowds later & go back to the vendors we wanted to buy from. The samples of smoked salmon & the jellies were outstanding! Most of all we loved his upbeat personality. I don't think he stopped smiling during the entire hour of our tour.
