The good: [[HIGHLIGHT]]The volunteers in with the animals are so kind here.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The building looks nice and they work to be organized by letting you register first come, first serve to see a specific pet, or go walk and look then come ask to meet an animal if you like. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Some people manage to get pre-approved for pets but there is no way to do that on the website, which is confusing.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The bad: Seattle Humane listed a dog as no special needs. We took time off work, prepared to visit and apply, we were ready. First in line, the volunteer told me before we met the dog she's undergone 3 operations - 2 for cancer- since arriving. Also she had a major bladder operation and requires special food and no treats, recurrence is likely. None of these are deal breakers for potential adopters w a big budget for operations, but why wasn't this in the description. We met the dog and she was cute, but we didn't get a room- we got to go in her little kennel and squat down (avoiding the urine) and try to get to know this dog who is still wearing a big plastic e-collar. Poor pup! [[HIGHLIGHT]]Also meeting her first me, then my husband (as volunteers handed out peanut butter on bags as enrichment which she wanted badly) was chaos.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I know these places are busy, and smaller animals are in demand, but for the sake of the dog's success in a new home please be more up front about medical problems AND reward our time outside in the cold lined up for opening by giving us a place to visit where we could both meet the dog without her bumping her plastic head protector on us. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Last spring my husband was first in line seeing a dog- they sat him in the kennel w a dog who never came out from the divider in back. They interrupted his visit to say "sorry someone was ahead of you, you need to leave".[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]This was another odd case of a successful dog family being treated like we're really not welcome nor do they care if we adopt.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Our last dog lived to be almost 18, our last two cats were 18 and 19 when they passed. Our dog and one cat we're both special. Medical needs. I've trained and shown dogs and I volunteered with animal rescues for over 20 years. I've been on multiple boards of directors for shelters. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Adopters are potential donors and supporters and I wish Seattle humane took that more seriously.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] We were very sad that the dog we had hoped to adopt and arrived. Prepared to apply turned out to have medical needs that were never disclosed. That little dog could've been taken home by the wrong family who really doesn't understand the scope of her medical needs because they didn't find out until they got to the counter and already had their heart set on her. Accompanied my friend here that had interest in adopting a cat. There were two of interest, so we made sure to go straight to them when arriving. We got there just as it was about to open on a rainy Saturday and there was a line, so if you'd like to come here and see a particular pet be prepared for this. It was chilly outside so one of the volunteers/staff let everyone in about 3 minutes early which was nice. [[HIGHLIGHT]]I really appreciate the volunteer/staff's commitment here. I'd see several tending to the animals, janitorial staff cleaning up, and the front-end staff answering questions, especially with the amount of people visiting.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] For this reason, I give props to Seattle Humane. I'd like to add that the facility is clean and nicely laid out. The enclosures for the Cats and dogs are nice, spacious and well lit. [[HIGHLIGHT]]My issues with Seattle Humane starts with another reviewer's similar experience to mine. I thought I'd check out the dogs with some growing interest in one. After signing up to meet with him, I spoke to a staff member about this particular dog and he had virtually no information about him, even in the computer there was little about it other than one particular volunteer knows him best, so we'd have to consult with her exclusively.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I understand pet shelters are understaffed but for only one person to be able to represent this dog is kind of ridiculous to me. It took a long time for her to free up too, almost an hour. [[HIGHLIGHT]]She finally comes out and looks pretty tired so I get that, but she looked also pretty disinterested and five seconds in pegged that it probably wouldn't be a good fit for me.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] This particular dog is a "red collar" dog which seems to mean they need a lot of work and training. She explained that he's highly reactive, needs a yard etc. I went through all the wait so I figured why not still meet him just because, but she really didn't seem to want to do it as it seemed it would be a waste of time. She may be right about that because it didn't work out, but that's the problem - None of this info is on his sheet in his enclosure, none of this info was available to the staff sitting at the computer, so yeah it was a waste of time. I'd think something basic would be there like "Warning. Red collar dog. Needs ____________." Instead, we wait to be told that way after the fact. It's not like the other dogs didn't have some of this info and he'd been here for a couple months from the looks of it, so I don't get it. Just seems disorganized. So, I appreciate all this shelter, and others provide but some of these screws here need to be tightened. read more

Every year we donate to Seattle Humane Society; it's so worth it. The animals here stay in little enclosed "condos", as I like to call them. They are given water and food on regular schedules. We have adopted from Seattle Humane two times now. I would've given them 5 stars except for this policy of letting potential adopters take their time keeping a dog on hold while others wait. Here was our recent experience: We found, met, played with a dog that we instantly loved and would've adopted immediately. But we were told that these three sisters (or maybe they were friends) had put their name in ahead of us to visit with this same dog. However, this group of 3 girls also had put in their name to see two other dogs. So Seattle Humane told us we had to wait until these girls visited with all three dogs and then we had to wait until they made up their minds! There was NO TIME LIMIT for them to decide. We are experienced dog owners and have been for 50 years. We knew we wanted this particular dog. She was gentle, got along with kids and other dogs, etc etc. TWO HOURS LATER ( no exaggeration), those three girls decided they wanted the dog that we wanted. We were happy for them, but why did Seattle Humane waste our time? Why didn't they have time limits? These girls wanted to look at all three dogs. What if they wanted to look at 10? [[HIGHLIGHT]]I asked if Seattle Humane could call us if the dog was available and we could go home and wait. They said no they don't do things like that.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I'll always donate to them because of the animals. Not because of this idiotic policy of letting potential owners take their time. I would say that the cats here are the happiest I have ever seen. Also, idk how but their enclosures are incredibly clean and do not smell at all. One thing really bothered me about the cats. My bf and I really liked one, the cat clearly liked us too. [[HIGHLIGHT]]One volunteer told us to go right in to the enclosure. Another volunteer told us we couldn't go in and that cat had a red warning label (which she couldn't explain the meaning of at all) and look at these other cats instead.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I'm assuming red means that the animal may have a few problems (these are the kind of animals I look for). [[HIGHLIGHT]]I was shocked how the volunteer was telling me I should look at the cat next to it (repeatedly).[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Not many people may be interested in a 5 yo cat with behavior issues so why recommend a young cute cat that got adopted that day anyway! [[HIGHLIGHT]]It was a very busy day when we went. No idea what to do or how to talk to anyone. The people at the front desk didn't even want to make eye contact and when I asked about the process and red label she got annoyed and said "there is a long wait".[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I knew I wouldn't get anywhere with any of those people. What happens when staff and volunteers can't answer questions (you can go in enclosures/you can't go in enclosures/nobody knows for sure what anything means or really wants to talk to people. We then went to the dog area. It wasn't as nice as the cat enclosures and there was a lot of poop. The dogs looked clean and I know they try to give them lots of attention, but these poor guys don't belong there. Aside from the puppies you can tell the rest really need families to love them. There are many big dogs and pitbulls there. Please don't be another irresponsible person who adopts them as puppies and then brings them back in three years because they are too much to care for. Sadly pitbulls are a restricted breed at my place of living, so there were a lot of other options to consider. [[HIGHLIGHT]]If you are reading this - go get a dog right now! But call or email first - otherwise you might leave without a dog and frustrated.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The three stars are for the staff and volunteers. I always had pets growing up, but this was the first time going through the adoption process myself. I was pleasantly surprised how quick and easy the whole time was. We met our sweet puppy Petra (formally Mathilda), fell in love, and were able to take her home that day. They have cardboard take home boxes for cats and critters and offer used collars and leashes for dogs for just $5. You get a bag of the kibble they use and a can of wet food. All your new buddies medical records of course, as well as any relevant information. It all made setting up a vet and going to buy supplies very easy. I had a very positive experience adopting the newest member of my family at Seattle Humane. The facility is very modern and expansive, there was a wide variety of cats to choose from and they all seemed extremely well cared for. The staff was great at ensuring all visitors interacted with the animals appropriately, I could tell their health and well being was the top priority. The one complaint I have is I had to pay a $25 fee to place a hold on my cat so I could visit with her the next day after she'd recovered from her spay, which did not go towards the cost of the adoption, but I know the money goes back to support the care of the animals so at the end of the day it's not a big deal. The adoption process itself was straightforward and they provided me with detailed information about her medical history and care instructions. The staff were very helpful and knowledgeable. Personally, I have been a volunteer in the cat annex, and I've adopted 1 dog and two cats from SHS. Also, I work with TNR groups that work with SHS and sometimes I've had to drop off strays/ferals. In all of my experiences, even the stressful ones, SHS has been a good org to work with. I really appreciate being a part of caring for animals and for this org that cares so much and has really great programs. Lastly, I really appreciate the pet loss and support group I attended when we lost our 15 y/o cocker spaniel (that I adopted from SHS). I absolutely love and trust the humane society. When I was younger I volunteered in the kennels and the office. Later in life I got a puppy here and took training classes. That dog was the most well mannered dog I ever had. She was 16 yos and we finally had to put her down last year. Now we have a new puppy and brought her here for vaccines. I have had the MOST POSITIVE experience with this facility and their wonderful staff. They care very well for a wide variety of dogs, puppies, cats and kittens. They make the adoption process exciting and fun and most importantly, fuss free. The animals are clean, given careful medical attention and played with. We fell in love with so many dogs, but ultimately took home our 4 mo. old hound mix, Daphne. The staff sent us home with food for her and plenty of information on how to care for her and the steps we needed to take next. They really do their best to make sure the dog you're bringing home is going to be a great fit for your home and family. They tell you everything they know about the history of each pup. We love Seattle Humane and the work they do. I wanted to give SHS a 5 star upon walking in there however today was a disastrous day for them and I will not be adopting a cat from them ever. First there was a female tech who said an orange cat who recently had surgery needed a cone on because quote "he's licking his balls, or the ones we cut off". WTH?!!! Then she slapped the cat up on the cage harshly to put the cone on. No need to be that aggressive with a cat. He wasn't fighting her or being a challenge. He was literally just a happy go lucky, wanting to play cat. Lady, if you just got your "balls cut off" wouldn't you want someone to be a bit gentle with you? Also, if you're having a bad day, call in sick or go for a walk. No pet needs your crappy ass energy showing how much stronger you are than they are. [[HIGHLIGHT]]I asked when I arrived if I needed to do anything to see the cats and was told "no just walk right in and you can ask to see any cat."[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Walking around the corner I noticed there were a lot of people viewing/touching the kittens with the cage doors open. [[HIGHLIGHT]]I asked someone, "hey can I go in and visit this cat?" (4 year old cat) the attendant said, "no, you need to scan this code and fill out the information or go on this wall screen and fill it out."[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I asked, I have to fill out a form and just to visit? She said yes. [[HIGHLIGHT]]WHY do I need to fill out a form to just visit with an older cat?[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I wasn't committing to any cat, I was just wanting to see if there was a connection - firmly believe pets chose you, just as much as your chose them. This was my first and likely only visit to the Seattle Humane Society in Bellevue. The front end staff was super welcoming and really friendly. And when I told them was interested in a particular dog (one that was not getting adopted because of a challenging behavioral trait), they were all so excited...until I met an adoption staff member who throughout my visit just made me feel inadequate. She focused almost exclusively on problems - an approach that I can only characterize as bitter. She even told me to go "shopping" for a dog that would be a better fit (as if animals were objects to be purchased for enjoyment). I told her I wasn't "shopping" for a toy or a thing to make me feel good. No, I came to adopt a RESCUE - not a toy. Suffice it to say, I'll probably not adopt nor go back to the Humane Society. I left defeated, inadequate, and sad - feelings you don't want to have when trying to adopt a rescue. I'm hoping that my little buddy will find the perfect home. UPDATE: Decided to go back after adoption manager contacted me. My first experience remains unchanged. I firmly believe the approach was unnecessarily negative. You want someone to walk you through pros and cons - not make you feel horrible. The staff member leapt way over the line. Thankfully, other staff members convinced me to adopt and I ultimately decided to go with a puppy. Cost me $500 ($460 + donation). Be prepared to spend $$$ for food, clothing, accessories because it's like having a baby. But I'm loving it! No sleep but lots of LOVE. read more

Since living here we have adopted three cats from Seattle Humane, have made donations to them and volunteered for them because we believe in their mission that much. It's such a comprehensive NPO from being a no kill shelter that adopts out animals from the building and foster care, to helping out community members as part of their SPOT program which temporarily houses pets up to 90 days, to supplying emergency food to the community, to teaching behavioral classes, to having a teen program, to summer camps, to a vet clinic that helps with reduced cost services for those who qualify along with continued 30 day care after adoption for animals who were handling health issues while on campus, to receiving shelter animals from all over the country to name a few. If you ever need a pick me up just check Instagram because the social media guy has the perfect spin on humor and tugging at your heart strings. And if you ever want to volunteer in way that really makes a difference- take on a 3 hour laundry shift where you'll likely do 12-15 industrial loads of laundry to help keep SH running! I have never visited the shelter in person. But I believe in the good work they do helping animals. I donate to them every Christmas.

I brought my (then) 3 y/o mini schnauzers in to get neutered/spayed (he had an undescended testicle) and he immediately developed an infection bc they didn't think it was necessary to prescribe an antibiotic. As a result, he formed an abscess that eventually burst, causing him to bleed. We rushed him to the emergency vet, which cost $2000 to clean and drain the area. I'm only giving 2 stars because Seattle Humane reimbursed us after sending follow up photos and threatening to report them to the board. If you take your dog to SH for surgery, you'd better take follow up photos EVERY DAY. I'd recommend taking them elsewhere if you care about your pup. read more

I'm so grateful for Seattle Humane for giving me the best fur buddy I could ever ask for. But I'm really upset with their LACK OF COMMUNICATION and RUDENESS! When I went to go adopt Sprout after getting everything ready for him to come home with me, one of the guys who gives us the information about the dogs had a really bad attitude with how I'm supposed to take care of a dog and that I would have to put extra work in since I'm going to get a dog.. I waited 2-3 days before adopting him to get all my affairs in order, knew that I would be on a different schedule... I told him I got Sprout's crate, bed, and more ready before I went to there AND he still had the audacity to give me an attitude for what reason???? My boy, Sprout and I have been going to doctors appointment a couple of times now because Seattle Humane FAILED to confirm what the "scabs" on his legs were actually were with me. They had told me that transportation had to do with the 'wounds' on his leg so it will heal and I shouldn't have to worry too much. After 3-4 days of having him, I noticed he kept biting his legs and crying, so I took him to the VCA in Covington to find out that he currently has a skin infection that was spreading from his back legs to his front paws. It took me 13 minutes to find out that my dog had a skin infection by the veterinarian taking a tape to his legs just to get a print of his skin to look at in the microscope... Stephanie from the Adoption Department from Seattle Humane emailed me for a 3 week check up to see how Sprout is doing and I told them what I had found out at the vet and couldn't get a response back.. It's been about 2-3 weeks since they emailed me and I'm really frustrated why they couldn't have said they're sorry for not PROVIDING so much more on their end by providing a thorough check up for these dogs. YES, I do know that I was going to spend quite a lot of money to go to the Veterinary hospitals, but to find out RIGHT AFTER adopting a dog that he's been suffering a skin infection and being neglected while he was in the shelter? I went to Seattle Humane instead of adopting a new puppy because I know there was other dogs that need homes. I know that there's a lot of dogs for them to take care of, but all I'm asking is have a thorough exam with each dog because you might not know that they could be suffering something you can't see from the outside. I cannot say enough great things about Seattle Humane. They truly are leaders in completing families, ensuring every animal is saved and goes to a loving home. I am proud to be a volunteer at Seattle Humane. The space is beautiful. Does anyone else remember Seattle Humane's former home? It was outdated and desperately needed more space for the animals, staff and storage for donations. It basically was separate buildings for different departments. But the new and improved building is still in the same location, and is inviting and welcoming for the public. AND, everything is located in one giant building. There are many programs that Seattle Humane offers for the public. Yes, they have animals for you to adopt, but they provide many resources for animals and families. For example, for low-income families, Seattle Humane has a pet donation bank, which provides families and their pets pet food. (And we accept donations from the public!) There's also a pet loss support group that meets, an educational program for teenagers, etc... The list goes on of the services they offer, in addition to the many events that Seattle Humane is part of. We are very lucky in the Seattle area to have Seattle Humane! They are proactive in providing support and assistance for families, saving animals, as they are a no-kill shelter, and going above and beyond to make sure animals have a place to call home. What can you say about an organization that gives you your best friend, your sweet companion, the littlest love of your life? We were blessed to get the best dog they've ever had at Seattle Humane Society (don't worry, I'm sure there are more best dogs ever left for you!) and we are so thankful that we did. A few tips: 1) I think they update their website each evening on the dogs they have available for the next day. When new puppies become available (like, young ones), they go quick. There will literally be people lined up at the door when they open. So if it's important to you to get a little puppy, keep that in mind. You can also call if you really have your heart set on meeting one particular animal, they also have a mobile truck (MAXmobile!) so they may be able to save you a trip if your pet is going to be out on the truck. 2) It's a little bit of a process. You go in, you look at the dogs in their kennels, you look at their paperwork, you have a mini interview, you get to go with the dog into a little play run, you come back out, you do some more paperwork, you pay some fees. Be patient. You've got the rest of your life with your new best friend, another half hour isn't going to kill you. 3) They really care about making a good match. They called a week after we adopted our sweet girl to make sure everything was going ok. 4) Free vet check up included in your adoption! Take them up on it. Even though our girl came with paperwork that said she had been treated for worms, we saw signs of worms pretty quickly, and that's not uncommon for shelter pets. It's paid for, use it. 5) Free dog training class at SHS including in your adoption! Take them up on it. The class was a great experience, we learned a lot about working with our dog, and I think it really helped us bond. We plan on taking another course in the next session. Don't take your animal here unless you don't care about them. Highly disappointed in the service/support I received at the Bellevue facility. I brought my senior Dad's dog here to be neutered over a month ago. The stitches they did on dog got tied up with the internal stitches they did so he still has internal stitches hanging out of the wound and it won't heal entirely. I've sent multiple correspondence with them about this issue as well as pictures. I was told to 'snip it off' with some fingernail clippers (cause that's sanitary?). Since I'm not a vet nor trained in stitch removal, I didn't feel comfortable in performing 'suture removal' on a 6 lb dog yorkie. I asked if i could bring him back so they could resolve the issue. They scheduled an appt for the dog accordingly. Supposedly they took the dog in, 'examined the dog' for, at the most, 5 mins returning the dog to my car and said it's ok, "let the dog chew off the remaining stitches". I was dumbfounded. I expressed my disbelief for their lack of compassion or wellbeing for the dog leaving the dog with internal stitches poking out of his belly which clearly are visible and refusing to resolve the issue. They told me he will be fine and let him 'remove them himself'. I still couldn't believe what i was hearing. I"ve already had multiple conversations with them about having to put the cone back on within hours of removal because the dog will make the would start bleeding as he's ripping and pulling at the internal stitches (external ones are long gone). The guys said "Well, the vet said all is fine and if we try to cut them, we could cut something else so we're just going to let him chew them off instead". I argued again that this is not ok and this dog is going to get an infection or tear his guts open if I take that cone off again and they need to remove the fishline stitches so at least the would can heal. They said they won't do anything and if they did, they would have to sedate them and they don't want to do that. He said it will probably be fine. I was so frustrated and crying as I told them how disappointed I was in this and I wish I never brought the poor dog there even though my dad can't afford a more expensive place because he's on social security. Then I get home to receive an email charging me $45 for the 'exam' that they NEVER informed me would cost my Dad since it was a recheck. ARE YOU FRICKEN KIDDING ME? I write this in hopes you take this poor, lack of compassion and care into consideration and don't take your fur babies here. They clearly don't care or provide any support. read more

I am SO thrilled to see that the Seattle Humane society went through some awesome revamps of their property. They have a huge facility now and the animals have so much more space than before in their areas. They also have a Mud Bay inside! They have reasonably priced items for cats and dogs and it's quite convenient to have that there when you're walking out the door with an adopted fur baby! I've been in the market for a sibling for my little gal and went to check them out to see what options they had. So many people were there taking home their new animals and it made me so happy. I remember coming here as a kid. The new building is unbelievable. I can never thank these volunteers and staff for helping us fine the love of our life, Millie. They have such knowledgeable staff that truly care about all the animals there. I've been lucky enough to take my dog to classes, and started moving forward as a foster parent. Ten outta ten. These animals are happy and cared for. All shelters are extremely stressful, but this is the Ritz in these parts. read more

I had yesterday sent a $50 donation to Seattle Humane, but I'm regretting my largesse. I've been searching for a cat at numerous shelters. Relying on Seattle Humane's postings of available cats, I drove 30 miles to check out a couple that I was interested in. Come to find out that their postings are missing some vital details about the cats they posted. Each of the cats' info posted on their enclosures revealed that they had a variety of special needs and health conditions that weren't mentioned online. It feels intentionally deceptive and like they withhold information in their posts.. It would take only 60 seconds to include all the info on their online posts. Their new facility is impressive, and I'm glad they're providing a valuable service. I just wish I had not wasted my time and gas money to find out the whole, pertinent information. read more

I came here about a couple of months ago and had such a terrible experience that I didn't even consider Seattle Humane when I was looking to adopt a dog. I would rather fly to the other side of the world and adopt a dog than adopt a dog from here. I feel like there are two types of people that work in shelters: people who love animals and wants others to experience the joy of owning a pet and people who love animals but hate people and don't think they deserve them. I'm sure you can guess which one Seattle Humane is. We visited and saw a dog we were interested in and asked if we could meet her and if we could fill out an application form. They straight up told us no unless we were willing to adopt her right then and there. My bf and I were completely shocked because why would an adoption place do that? What if we weren't a good match for this dog? If this was standard practice, it seems like there would be a high chance of people returning their dogs because it didn't work out since apparently you have to adopt before meeting them. We were super uncomfortable and uneasy about this condition and expressed that we didn't want to do that. Then one of them made a snarky comment about how we weren't committed and serious and said verbatim, "if you want to just play with dogs you can volunteer instead of adopt." How upsetting and rude. I also heard from other friends that they encountered volunteers here that would be really condescending and make snide comments if you didn't know every single thing about a dog. They especially aren't friendly to first-time pet owners and it seems kinda hard to hard to adopt from here if you don't have any prior pet experience. It's already a big and sometimes stressful life decision to adopt a dog because you don't want to mess up and they should be encouraging (providing resources, tips, etc) instead of giving comments that literally provide zero value and discouraging attitudes. read more

[[HIGHLIGHT]]Although the volunteers are very friendly and helpful, the processor in charge of doing the paperwork for adopting cats, at least the one from last Sunday, really needs to improve.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Or get fired. We waited for almost three hours for her to start our paperwork once we let her know which cats we intended to adopt. Within the span of about 3 hours, she called on us on two different occasions to approach her desk from the waiting area, only to ask us whether we brought our own pet carriers or not, looking confused and not seeming to know which cats we expressed an interest in, and then quickly told us to go back to our seats to again wait for her to call us. She did this twice! [[HIGHLIGHT]]We decided we would not wait any longer, and chose to leave to find another shelter to adopt a cat.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] And sure enough, at the next shelter we went to, we were able to meet a cat of interest, ask questions, fill out all necessary paperwork, pay the adoption fees, and leave with our newly adopted cat--all in about 45 minutes! read more
