I went to a showing of The Pirates of Penzance; or, The Slave of Duty as my first ever opera showing! Before the showing, there was a little lecture hall in the basement which explained the background of the show and the themes present. I think without this, I would have been a bit lost and not have enjoyed the show as much as I did. I thought the singing and acting were superb, and I loved the props and costumes. The orchestra was fantastic as well. Everything was very well done! As a note, during intermission, I noticed there was a line for the men's room and none for the women's room. It turns out that the women's room is significantly larger with more stalls to prevent a backup. It's very thoughtfully designed considering there's a limited time for intermission to use the restroom. read more

Terrific setting for our first night at this opera house. Lots of parking garages across the street. This opera house has a lot of room and an easy flow from entrance to the theatre. Two elevators made getting to the fourth floor quick. The interior of the theatre is simple, pleasant colors, and well ventilated. The balcony was comfortable the whole opera. The stage was classy. The acoustics good. The performance of the Pirates of Penzance was the right choice for my sisters' first opera (my 10,000th?). I'm going to redact one star for one maybe strange reason but I think it's not an out of this world suggestion - that they go one step further in modernizing opera. They have done a wonderful job in terms of visuals. The singers are bar none and from all over the country (and world, I suppose!). The opera symphony and choir - also top notch. But you know, a lot of operas are VERY outdated in terms of content (plot, story, dialogue) and tbh I find that offputting. And I think many opera goers nowadays do too (if the rumbles in the Hall are any indication!). I have seen revised versions of classics - I know it can be done. So, my request for that last star is don't just change the faces and update the scenery - change some of the old-fashioned words, too. read more

You gotta give them five stars just for the fact that they operate what is very likely a first tier opera house, very very few cities in this country can afford to operate a house like this. The performance I saw was was good and One thing that was very good. The acting in the opera was excellent the maybe the best I've ever ever seen the orchestra was good I didn't really love the music but that's my personal preference and the voices of the singers were beautiful. It's a nice facility. They have a they have snack bars on each levels for and they have a restaurant but you need to book in advance. This was for a special KCTS 9 event back on 2/11/20 hosting Chef Marcus Samuelson from No Passport Required showcasing Filipino culinary visionaries from the greater Seattle region. The College Friend and I weren't able to attend the other food/drink event at the KCTS 9 studios. But we froze waiting in line, hoping to get a good seat for the later free panel event. I remember we had had a terrific time chatting with a couple that had just moved from Chicago to Seattle. I was able to get tips for an upcoming trip to the upper midwest, just wished I was brilliant and actually exchanged contact info. I remember feeling so much pride seeing so many Filipino/Filipino American participants from the greater Seattle community from the cultural presentation from UW students to the folks on the panel with Chef Samuelson. I enjoyed the venue hosting the event that is adjacent to the Seattle Opera. Decent seating and interior, well emceed, and an overall memorable event. read more

HORRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE! Company did not even offer or recommend a comparable show but continue to stress no Refund. On a recent call to your customer service line, I spoke with a representative named Christie, who informed me that refunds can only be authorized by a manager. After briefly consulting with a manager, she returned to tell me that I could only receive company credit, valid until June of next year. When I inquired if the performers from the October 26 show would return within that timeframe, Christie confirmed they would not. Given this, a company credit is of no use to me. I explained that the person for whom I purchased the tickets is now required to leave town on October 9 to tend to a family matter, making our attendance impossible. I later joined this morning . We will not be back until November and show is on the 26th. When I asked to speak directly with a manager, I was informed that none were available, despite Christie earlier stating that she had just consulted one. She mentioned that managers were in a different building and that they were closing soon for a rehearsal. This raised further concerns about the validity of her earlier claim. I asked if she was refusing to contact the manager again to inform them of my desire to speak with them, but she insisted that the manager was unavailable. When I requested the manager's name, she told me it was John. The miscommunication, refusal to escalate my request, and misleading information about refund policies were extremely frustrating. I was not only denied the opportunity to speak to a manager but I was also left with a credit I cannot use. The next day the Assit Marking manager told me she was correct on everything and he was choosing to stand by the credit offered. Again, I asked about shows and he did not sell the theater, did not try to earn the customer, disregard my inquiry if a culturally similar show was coming so that maybe I can use credit there, and did No marketing at all. He gave no reason for denial of the refund that was his discretion and cared nothing about the customer. It felt very discriminatory for culture and need to tend to elderly people By his lack of empathy or concern. read more

Great entertainment option for families/date nights/friends night out/tourists! McCaw Hall houses the Seattle opera and PNW ballet, so there are always quality shows to watch when you visit. Seats are relatively comfy and the theater is clean and modern. While the musicianship of the opera is very good, recently the opera has gone completely down the tubes with cheap staging, and has become a really unpleasant experience. After being season subscribers for many years, we cancelled our subscription as the operas have generally become really bad, and the experience is generally unpleasant, especially as it's not particularly inexpensive to attend the opera. Things seem to have gone downhill after Jenkins departed, and until they get their act together and start to bring back epic stagings (I don't want to watch opera singers dressed as hipsters wandering around on empty stages -- called 'edgy, modern productions') and good quality all-around, I won't be attending the Seattle Opera. It's really a shame, but there are better musical events in this city to which I'd rather give my money. read more

Opera invokes very dear memories from my childhood. Growing up in Russia, both of my parents had full time careers and I had to be self sufficient at an early age. One of my mother's close friends was the director of the theater in our city. I would watch plays, ballet and opera on a regular basis. It kept me busy in the evenings when my folks were not around ;-) Bizet's Carmen was instantly one of my favorites. Maybe it was the French language, maybe a free spirited female lead, or maybe the gypsy culture I was familiar with, probably all of the above captivated me. I was very excited to purchase these tickets, since I have not had a chance to check out the Seattle Opera house and I was very eager to introduce my other half to the art of opera. To me opera was the original musical, beautiful sets, music, stories and vocals that can bring you to laughter or tears without any translation. It's magical. McCaw Hall is a beautiful space with fantastic acoustics. Cocktails and wine are available during intermissions and you may even pre order your next round. Complimentary coat check, programs and lovely staff. If you have not experienced opera, create a special occasion out of it. Just finished seeing Wagner's complete Ring Cycle at the Seatlle Opera. What a gem in the Pacific Northwest. For staging Wagner, the Seattle Opera is getting world class attention. People from all over the world and the USA attended this performance which was four operas over six days. Fabulous stage sets and costumes. Superb singers. The Ring is well know for its music and epic tale of gods, giants, niebelungs and humans. It has it all: greed, lust, desire, trust, deceit, power, betrayal, arrogance, heros, heroines, revenge, and renewal. If you have not seen this epic opera, I highly suggest you take one in. Seattle Opera stages it every 4 years. The McCaw hall has great acoustics. Nice (but pricey) snack bars and refreshment stands on all levels. Seattle is certainly blessed with such a fine arts venue in the city. I will return for more great opera. read more

When I moved to Seattle from New York, I was excited to hear that I wouldn't have to kick my Opera habit. The Seattle Opera has a reputation of being one of the best "second tier" Opera companies in the country. Truthfully, I've been a little disappointed so far. The repertoire selection is not always up my alley; sometimes their list of operas for the year comes out and I can't find more than 1 I'm really interested, other years I've wanted to see every thing on the list. My biggest complaint is the quality of the second cast. If you attend on certain nights (I think it's Friday nights) you will get a second, back-up cast. I've found that this cast is consistently worse, and to enough of a degree that I've enjoyed even some of my favorite operas significantly less when I attended on a Friday instead of a Saturday. On the bright side, Seattle Opera has a beautiful new house in McCaw Hall which provides them the ability to put on some really incredible productions. And the company seems to be on the way up; collaborations with the Met in New York and other world-class companies have certainly helped with this. Also, the Seattle Opera's orchestra is really excellent and has impressed me at every production I've seen. My recommendation is to try to make sure you see the primary cast (Wednesday or Saturday night), and pick your operas carefully. Wagner is definitely the specialty of the house! If you can't find something that meets these criteria, consider getting your cultural fix at nearby Intiman Theatre, or your classical music at the excellent Seattle Symphony. read more

I'd never been to a full-length opera before I went to see La Boheme this spring at McCaw Hall. Not being at all educated in opera, only knowing that I thought I might like it, I came away with stars in my eyes! La Boheme is touted as "the world's most popular opera" - and I can see why. The story is wonderfully romantic and relatable, the characters full of life and hope, even amidst the backdrop of a dreary, harsh Paris. The sets were beautifully done and framed the players and mood perfectly. The music...my goodness, the music. The singers' voices soared unlike anything I'd heard before. Now I know why people love opera. It hit me square in the heart and took ahold of my soul. I don't think opera is something that you can choose to like or not - you either love it forever with a fierce passion, or it closes its doors to you evermore. The last few minutes of La Boheme were wrenching and more compelling than any other performance I've known. I was captive and could not look away. I don't think I've ever been so hyper-focused on anything in my life! I would have paid the $100+ ticket price again in a second just for those last few minutes. Brilliant. read more

Seattle Opera now course has a glorious new home in McCaw Hall on the grounds of the Seattle Center. I cannot vouch for the acoustics of the hall, having only a "tin ear" basically, but the main auditorium seemed well designed to enhance viewing the opera from anywhere in it. I was sitting on the orchestra level front center, so I felt very much immersed in the opera. (Having been to a Starbuck's shareholders' conference courtesy of my sister, I think I can vouch for the sight-lines of the second balcony as well). Not being an opera fan at heart, I have only seen one opera, Martin David Levy's "Mourning Becomes Electra," which was wonderfully staged. The main reason I saw it was that I have a strong interest in Eugene O'Neill, they were selling discount tickets to this particular opera (I think around $30), and had scene an excellent production at ACT Theatre with Jane Alexander a few years earlier. I was definitely impressed by the production. It preserved most of the dramatic structure and power of the play itself and even enhanced it some (I understand that that could NOT be said of Andre Previn's opera of Tennessee Williams's "Streetcar Named Desire)." Lauren Flanigan made a striking Christine in the Seattle Opera production. The sets, lighting, and Levy's music were all strong. And my ear is definitely warming up to opera. Maybe as you get older you just start to lose interest in hearing the flood of indistinguishable and undistinguished pop music that blares out everywhere (including automobiles, your next-door-neighbor's apartment, and nearly every store you walk into), i.e., 95% of the music heard around the world. (And I think I've already heard enough rock/pop/soul music for several lifetimes). Despite opera's reputation as being an elite art for only the wealthy, I am hoping that Seattle Opera will take the lead in introducing this art form to a larger audience. Now if only they would offer discount prices on a few other operas (no, doesn't have to be the "Ring" cycle!), I would definitely be persuaded to go see another opera! read more

I was here to see Madama Butterfly with a very low expectation. I've seen Madama Butterfly quite a few times but I was bored on that weekend so I gave it a shot. I HAVE 2 and HUGE COMPLAINTS. 1. The show starts at 2PM and we were there at 11:30AM to pick-up our tickets. We didn't care if the ticket booths are not yet open but at least there should be a waiting area. It was raining and chilly and a lot of people are standing outside waiting for the doors to open. There's a "Prelude' restaurant and we can see the employees are ignoring us. An old lady on a wheelchair told me that they have a 11:30 reservation at Prelude and the doors are still close at 11:30? WOW. 2. Poor signage. It says"tickets can be picked up at John St" or similar to that. Where is freaking John St??!! Seattle Center is so huge. What the heck. POSITIVE FEEDBACK: 1. One of the best Madama Butterfly that I've seen. Great cast. Simple and realistic stage. 2. They are using a real boy (I've seen puppets before). And the boy is such a good actor. I have recently fell in love with the Seattle Opera and opera in general. My mother and I bought 3-show tickets this season (Lucia di Lammermoor, The Barber of Seville, and The Magic Flute), and I now wish we also bought tickets for Don Quixote. The Seattle Opera is cultural gem. Yes, the opera can be pricey, but it is worth it to see such high-caliber singers. Everything is fantastic: the cast, the sets, and the orchestra. Like one previous reviewer mentioned - do go on a Saturday or Wednesday. My tickets are for opening night, but I have heard from a long-time opera lover that the silver cast is very talented, but not as good as the main cast. The Barber of Seville is currently playing, and if you've ever been curious about the opera, this is the show to see. Unlike most operas, Barber is a comedy. There is a lot of humor in the fast-paced production. If you do go, be sure to dress up. This is one of the few events that Seattle-ites break out the suits, tuxes, and gowns. Also, I HIGHLY recommend pre-ordering food for intermission before the show. The lines for refreshments can be super long otherwise. This way, they will reserve a table for you with your food, and you can take your time. read more

I cannot express my incredible delight and wonder at the experience I had recently with the Seattle Opera's rendition of The Tales of Hoffman. I've always enjoyed the artistry of opera, but this was actually my first chance to see it performed live, and the opulence of the costumes, the talent of the performers, the character each singer brought to the stage simply blew me away. This opera company is a powerful victory for the arts in Seattle and I cannot imagine that any opera company in the world could've dazzled my senses more than the performance I was so lucky to have a seat for. Do not hesitate to spring for the tickets for this one Saturday evening. The operas are sung in their original languages, but there are subtitles and the program explains the story, so any gaps in understanding are easily remedied. I definitely would not recommend this for children, but as a parents night out, it's a gorgeous treat; a chance to wear your elegant party gown and sip champagne during the intermissions while being dazzled by the elegance and superior performance of the Seattle Opera. This opera company is definitely world class, and I will absolutely be back. read more

Last time I visited this place was in 2011 but to this day I share the same enthusiasm as at first about the professionalism and fine ethics of all who make that Opera House happen. We watched Taurodont last night. The opera house itself was great. The show was average. We arrived about 20 minutes before the show which gave us time to use the bathroom and find our seats. We were in the third tier, but had second row middle seats. Despite being far back, the sound was clear and I could see easily. They do rent binoculars and audio sets for $5. I did not realize this until after the show. My only complaint was the concession stand. We tried to get an ice tea during both intermissions. The first one we didn't make it. The second one we bolted to the line and the second we got our drink the bells chimed. I felt like I had to chug my drink down. The service was incredibly SLOW. When we got to the front they only had two cashiers and one many pour wine. Right as we got to the front he broke the cork. Then our cashier turned his back on the rest of the line to try to help him. After a while, the both gave up, one left and the cashier finally turned around to let us purchase bottled tea. Also right after we purchased the drink the bells chimed so we basically had to chug it down. Another thing I realized after the show, they had a complimentary coffee station. Would have been nice to have a complementary water station or even tea station because that's really all I needed. read more

Seattle Opera is a great opera company, with some world-class productions. They are known best for the Ring, but have put on some other great productions, incl. their 2005 production of "Florencia in the Amazon". The good part of the programming is Speight Jenkins goes an extra step when putting his productions together. He travels the world, checks out opera productions, and manages to put together a great production, or bring the best productions to Seattle. And when he brings a production to town and sees room for improvement, he makes an improvement on it. The downside of the programming is it can be too much of one thing or another; too much of a heavy/light contrast. Some composers are conspicuously missing from the programming, while others are mysteriously there. I guess when you're only doing a few operas a year, it's hard to do everything, but I'd like to see at least one opera a year that shows more of a broad view of opera. Though there are hits and misses, all in all, Seattle Opera is worth the price of admission. People come from all over to go to The Ring. Seattle is the only place I know of that has "opera tourism". But there's a reason why... The Ring is what they do best. Can it live up to the hype each year? I think so, but they could bring in a top conductor for the price they charge. :) The singing is good, particularly with the Gold cast. Regarding the new building. I was a bit skeptical of it at first-- Seattlelites has plenty of time to scrutinize the exterior before it opened. From the outside, it looked forbidding, the stream in the passageway looked pointless, the banners arbitrary, and then there were lights, which would come off and on randomly (as if the building wasn't Kafkaesque enough!). When the interior was finally revealed, we entered to find a lobby area that looked like a Microsoft building (not surprisingly Microsoft was their first season sponsor). Inside, the hall looked dark and mysterious, but borderline dreary. Then the performance began. It was Parsifal... and it was incredible. The set, the lighting, the singing.. wow, special effects too! Wagner would approve. And then came the next production, and the next... Suddenly the space didn't feel uncomfortable anymore. The lobby didn't remind me of Redmond. I started to like the light show outside. I felt myself getting pensive looking at the stream. I guess what happened was that there were so many good productions, that I forgot about the space, or rather the space took on a new quality. Or maybe I simply got used to it! The last thing I'd like to mention is the acoustics. They're very good! The acoustics have helped to bring nuances of the music forward, which you really didn't hear before. Even quiet passages that usually get lost can be heard precisely and with clarity. Some would say the hall brings too much clarity, but I disagree! I put Seattle Opera in my top 10- - And I've sat through quite a few... Fine, I will admit it. I absolutely love the opera. And no, I'm not a 50+ year old lady in a bad dress that I bought in the 80s (yeah, those ones with shoulder pads that make women look like NFL linebackers). But who can resist great music and great sets and over the top acting? Not me! Seattle Opera puts on great shows and in the last few years they have taken chances with smaller, less main stream performances. And they are getting tons of attentions for their larger than life Ring Cycle. Last year Bluebeard's Castle and Erwatung were absolutely breathtaking and Janice Baird was phenomenal as Elektra. I went to see La Traviata last night and it was another hit for the Seattle Opera. They did such a splendid job with the music, costumes and sets that it just transformed me to another world. They even have $20 rush tickets for students that they start selling 2 hours before curtain. If doing rush tickets it's best to check how many seats are available online ahead of time because they often sell out, particularly for weekend performances. The only bad thing about the opera is dealing with bizarre people who think it acceptable to spend the entire death song trying to open a package of cough drops. Welcome to Seattle folks. read more

Ah, yes. A night out with Seattle's elite. Or, at least, those who can afford an opera ticket. While I've never been to any other opera company in the US, or in the world for that matter, I think that the Seattle Opera puts on some great shows. I recently saw the last show of Amelia, an opera which made its world debut with these past few showings. The singing is spectacular, the scenery diverse and interesting with each new act, and everything comes together quite nicely to give you a good overall production. While I'm not screaming and jumping up and down for joy for the Seattle Opera, the company puts on fairly incredible performances that will leave you wanting to come back for more. read more

Our first show at the Seattle Opera was Beatrice & Benedict in the "Second Tier Side Upper" discounted seats. There's a limited number available in every show (unless otherwise specified) and they're a nice option for folks who aren't really sure if they like opera. There's actually a number of discount programs to make shows accessible to a wider audience - I definitely recommend checking them out. As first time attendees, I liked that they sent a pamphlet letting us know what to expect for our first opera. Since then we've become BRAVO! members (their young professionals group) - and it's always a fun experience. The programs and lobby displays are excellent and always include a ton of thoughtful insight into the show. There's lots of offerings like podcasts, and lectures to add to your experience. It's pretty sad when you have all of their numbers memorized and know to ignore them. I decided to check out the opera with the promotional $25 dollar seats all the way in the back. It was my first time to an opera, and we were excited as we love the performing arts. Unfortunately, I'm sorry to say that I probably won't be going back. The singing itself was superb and I take my hat off to the vocalists who practice this form of art. I respect the level of detail, difficulty, and discipline that goes into opera. However, I won't be going back for two reasons. First, the opera is an acquired taste and I certainly didn't acquire it while watching Semele. It takes a level of patience and maturity that I will readily admit that I don't have. Second, WHO ON EARTH DESIGNED THE SET?? IKEA would be my first bet. The set's fireplace was a projection onto a retractable screen. The lighting was white, straight from the set of Star Trek. I actually felt like the plot was set in the year 2500. I am a HUGE fan of the Opera! I had been a season ticket holder for three years and yes, I do go alone most of the time. I never drag anyone with me because I love it so much I want to truly enjoy it and only be around others who want to be there, like myself. My only gripe about the Seattle Opera is the dress code... They let anyone in and it takes away from the experience. Even if you wanted to dress up, you couldn't because in the sea of jeans and crocs or dansko shoes, your dress would look out of place. I had the misfortune of sitting in front of a jean clad women who brought in her small dog who growled and barked randomly?!?!? Worst part of it was it was for Turandot! Yeah, I was pissed but that's the Seattle Opera. After that I did not renew my season ticket... I still like to go but not as much as I used to. read more
