Love coming here for community events! The Dunbar holds a great significance to the black Tucson…read morecommunity as it was Tucson's segregated school for African American students until desegregation in 1951, and I'm glad to see that it's being preserved and utilized to uplift the community in the current day. There's multiple events held here monthly, including The Slide Society's line dance classes on Thursday nights at 6PM, which I really enjoy! In addition to this, there's also the barbershop and school that lives here, a healthy food prep restaurant I think, various community classes, and even the "Connections That Count" events that take place at 5 PM every first Wednesday that target, various themes and aim to build a better community (ABC) through fellowship and networking. There's really so many great things to say about the Dunbar and community events that occur here! Definitely worth checking out.

What makes this place special is its history. Do yourself a favor, go to their website, and read…read morethe About section. I'd be doing it a disservice by trying to summarize it. Currently it serves as a community center, a school, a barber academy, and it rents space out to artists and dancers and educators and even a publishing house! They have some great community programs and I was there for the Free Vegan Cooking class. The speaker, I believe her name is Rosie Kennedy, was great; equal parts knowledgeable and warm and engaging. She broke down a topic that can be daunting and demo'd a couple of recipes. Highly recommend signing up for any of her future programs if they (hopefully!!) have them. The space itself is not great for a cooking lecture because it's not a kitchen. The speaker did an amazing job, especially with all the constraints but she could have really benefitted from a more functional set-up. The room feels like its seen better days but they do have this super cool canvas wrapped around 2 of the walls that documents the history of the local African American community and the Dunbar. All in all I really appreciate having this resource in the community and look forward to their future programs!

The whole park is huge but we just hung around by the playgrounds. It was super busy on a Saturday late afternoon (understandably). It was a little dirty but not terrible. I've worked with kids of all ages for years so I'm not like overly irked by kids behavior but wow they were wild, terrible language, breaking apart a tree and swinging a giant branch around, overall just playing rough with no regard to other kids trying to play. Maybe just not a good place to take a toddler or might just be the specific day we went. But don't think I'd be back for that reason.

In memory &unity 3 miles around the golf course . What a multipurpose recreation area in the heart of our community . Historic baseball park , other baseball fields were having games . The zoo going through major expansion was busy too. A large pond with ducks and other birds . ( don't feed them bread the sign said ). A small train was running from the zoo around the duck pond area. Several newer playgrounds along with ramadas and tables for your private use with reservations . East side has 2 golf courses , tennis courts , recreation building with gym , various classes , and also a therapeutic outdoor pool for people with special needs" ( respectfully if that's the best description). How lucky are we to have this community recreational space !

There were lots of people but it wasn't crowded and there was plenty of room for the tables for selling t-shirts and baked goods. Minus 1 star cuz the floor's concrete and hurts your legs after standing/walking on it for 2 hours. There were chairs but they were all filled up. Most of the chairs didn't have padding either. I don't think added more chairs is an option because there would need to be a riser to lift the back rows up so people could see. As this is a multipurpose facility there's limits as to what can be done. Hey, it would be great for Fight-Club! Oops, I'm not suppose to talk about that.

I have been the Bookman's Event Center several times for Tucson Comic Con and Tucson Roller Derby…read moreevents. The staff are courteous and helpful and the facilities are clean. While I was there for the Comic Con the owner was actually wandering around asking vendors/artists how everything was and was it set up well for them, which I really appreciated. It is a large warehouse and the parking is in ample supply here. It's a little tough to find if you're not familiar with the location, it's behind a large RV sales place just off of I-10 and Irvington. The bathrooms are quite dated and there are only four stalls in the women's restroom. Overall though I think it's a good facility.
