Nancy did a "blowout" for my proposal photos and it turned out beyond awful. It somehow looked worse than something I do myself. I showed her a photo of myself with loose beach waves that I had done by my regular stylist where I live. I told her I wanted a blowout and loose curls done with a curling iron. Instead, she used a straightener and curled the ends of my hair only for some reason. Thus, most of my hair was straight but the volume was concentrated just at the ends of my hair which looked very strange. Overall when I left my hair looked sloppy, messy, frizzy and was uncurled/undone in some areas. I asked her to redo it, curl higher up the hair closer to my scalp and she somehow made it look even worse. I then realized that she wouldn't be able to get it right and she doesn't know how to style hair in the way I wanted (which is a simple and common style, nothing crazy). I left the salon not knowing what I would do as I had not brought any of my own styling tools on this trip. I assumed when I got my hair styled at a salon that I wouldn't have to do my own hair. That was the whole point of paying to get my hair done at a salon. I walked to multiple other salons in the area to see if they could fix it and they were all booked with wedding parties. I started to get nervous and sad. By chance I stumbled upon a salon that was open and had a cancellation and the woman who did my hair was an absolute angel, fixed the sloppy job Nancy did, styled it how I wanted and when it was time to pay she didn't even accept my money. I was stunned. This new stylist told me that Nancy didn't even dry my hair all the way. Nancy was using hot tools on damp hair which is extremely damaging. I can't believe this woman is the owner of a hair salon. Poor quality work. Overall she did a crappy job and I think she could tell I was unhappy but didn't do anything about it. I can't recommend this place. There were barely any reviews on Yelp so by leaving one I hope to save other people some grief and stress on their special vacation or wedding, engagement, bridal party, etc. Go to Danielle's Hair Design. She called her color rep, got some new tips, and offered for me to come in and have her touch it up. My philosophy is "it's just hair," but she went the extra mile to make sure I was more than "just okay" with it. She completely redid the color, and made sure it was exactly what I wanted. I go here because Celina, the most talented hair stylist I've ever found, is here. I can't speak for the other stylists because I haven't tried them. Celina's cuts and color are inspired. I have very curley hair and she knows exactly how to deal with it (because her hair is curley too). I'm a pretty tame person when it comes to hair, but she makes my hair look like a rock star's. If you want one or two colors slapped on your head, you can have that done anywhere. But if you want dimension with a few colors weaved beautifully together, Celina is the one to pull it off. Last time she put fun little red-lights (like highlights, but awesomely red) in my hair with some blonde and brown, and it looked fantastic. She's an artist. read more

Used Secret Garden for their hair/make up services for a wedding. 2 out of 3 of us had an up do and they turned out amazing, looked fabulous and held until the end of the day. I would recommend them for styling hair, you will not be disappointed. On to make up. All 3 of us had our make up done and all 3 of us rushed home and removed it. 2 of us had to give so much guidance to our make up 'artist' that we may as well have taken the tools and done it ourselves. I know how to put my make up on but I thought it would be nice to have a professional achieve the look that we are not experienced enough to do. Wrong. Once we got into the sunlight we realized we looked like drag queens. Foundation not rubbed in, big gaps in the eyeliner.. as in not reaching the lashes. It really was horrendous. Our mistake - we didn't say anything at the time, however it was 4.15 and we had to leave for wedding at 5.30. We knew we had to now factor in re-doing our make up and we didn't have time to fight it. I did call back and speak to the owner who thanked me for the feedback. However, bearing in mind we spent $150 on make-up which was washed off 5 mins later I would have appreciated at least a portion of my money back. In conclusion, 5 stars for hair, 0 stars for make up. read more

During my stay I solvang I decided to get my hair cut and colored, (something I rarely so). I made the appointment based on their yelp review. I went in not really knowing what I wanted but after a short discussion and an open mind I let Theresa do what she wanted. I was not disappointed with the end result. She listened to my minor needs and gave me a great color and cut. While there, the other stylists were super friendly and sweet. I recently got married in Solvang (9/6) and after shopping around I found that the Secret Garden Salon offered the best price. I spoke with the owner Nancy and she was very nice and returned all phone calls very promptly. We set up a day to check out the salon and meet everyone in person. Nancy reassured me that there are plenty of stations and we could bring as many people as we would like and everyone would get done on time. More and more family members wanted to get ready at the salon so I called and spoke with Nancy twice and each time she reassured me to bring anyone and everyone. Since the beginning, I mentioned to her that there will be at least 10 people because they are wedding party. I called once more on the Wednesday before the wedding to order eyelashes for the bridesmaids (which are an extra charge). Nancy said to me that I originally told her 5 people. I told her that's incorrect because there are 6 bridesmaids and I was unsure where she even got that number. I told her there was going to be 10 people for sure and probably more. She assured me that everyone would get done on time and I asked her again "so if anyone wants to come, you will make sure to get everyone done?" and she again said YES! EVERYONE! We showed up the day of the wedding with 13 women and a flower girl. All 13 women wanted hair and makeup. There were only 3 hairstylists. 2 hairstylists, including Nancy, are inadequate at styling hair. Mila was the only hairstylist with talent and the only person that did makeup. MILA IS AMAZING!! Nancy did my moms hair. My mom only wanted it to be half up and curled. It looked terrible. I am not sure how you can mess that up. My mom went back to the hotel room so she can redo it. A bridesmaid went to the other hairstylist (I dont remember her name) and what took her an hour to do a terrible updo, Mila did 3 amazing updos! (I wish I could have duplicated Mila, she is awesome!) Another bridesmaid went to the other stylist and she could not do a braid. So this bridesmaid also had to wait for Mila to do her hair. This stylist also did the flowergirls hair. All she needed was to get spiral curls. My poor little cousin was trying so hard not to cry because the stylist kept pulling her hair. At the end, her hair looked OK but the curls did not look neat ($25 for flowergirl that has hair to her chin) Time started to run out. There was no way Mila could do everyone's hair in time so bridesmaids started to call around to other hair salons to see where they can go. Nancy was of no help. She just watched us as we all googled different hair salons. Nancy claimed that she did not know all these people needed hair AND makeup. This statement is absurd as I called and told her numerous times. She admitted it was her fault after I told her "I ordered eyelashes of course there were more girls that wanted to get their makeup done". Also, even if all 13 ladies just wanted hair there was no way Mila could do all 13 in 3 hours because no one wanted to go to Nancy or the other stylist. Some girls had to go elsewhere due to time. It was a mess and an extra stress that I did not need on my wedding day. I envisioned I would be sitting, relaxing, drinking champagne, and having good laughs with the girls. It was the opposite. We were all angry, frustrated, and very unhappy with services. Needless to say, I regret going here on my wedding day. If I could do it again, I would pay more and have stylists come to the hotel room. I would highly recommend to any bride to avoid this salon. Many thanks to Mila for doing an amazing job on my hair and makeup for my wedding in September up in wine country. Following a trial appointment (yes, there was a charge for this), I booked the salon for myself, my bridal party and some family to all have their hair and makeup done prior to our wedding. While not cheap, after doing some research on other service providers in the area, Secret Gardens seemed like a tremendous deal. I am also used to paying approximately $120 (with tip) for a haircut at a salon in LA, and this seemed comparable to me, but I guess it is all relative. I will say this, despite the fact that it seems like Secret Gardens does a pretty steady business in "weddings"--they don't seem to upcharge for it. When I booked our appointments, I essentially rented out the entire salon, with four or five stylists at our disposal for hair and makeup--this was fantastic, as it allowed 8 of us (including 2 young girls) to be in and out in under two hours. I don't know about you, but I've been a part of weddings where I had to start getting primped at 8, 9 and 10 AM for afternoon/evening weddings. We started at noon to be ready for our pre-ceremony photos by 3-- this was no problem. I can't remember all the women that worked with us that day, really only Mila, and I give her five stars alone, as she was super patient, worked quickly and listened to me very carefully during my trial. She took photos and notes from the trial and replicated it all beautifully on the day-- I was 100% confident in her hands. I will say the fees charged for make-up for the rest of the women in my group seemed a little high, when compared to the charges for the hair--as in, it took more skill and more time to do the hair than it did for the make-up and the price was only $10-15 less. They also allowed us to bring in champagne and snacks to munch on at no additional charge (some places charge a corkage fee). Thanks everyone at Secret Gardens! Theresa O'Grady did my hair and I was so pleased by how it turned out and her styling techniques held up well throughout the entire wedding and brunch the next day. I highly recommend her. Everyone at the salon was gracious and helpful. They were extremely busy but made sure we got excellent service. I can't say enough good things about them. I called yesterday to set up an appointment, they worked around my schedule and got me in right away. I am always afraid to get my hair cut because I almost never like it! Naturally, I hadn't had it cut in a long time and it was super damaged. Theresa did my hair and I love it! She cut it exactly how I wanted and it looks and feels so much healthier. DO NOT GO TO TERESA FOR WAXING!! I went there yesterday while we were visiting to get my brows cleaned up and my lip waxed before I saw my regular girl who has been doing my waxing for years mid Nov. Since I do get my brows done regular, there wan't much needed to be done. I am not really sure how she did it, but she took the middle part of my eyebrow OFF! She was nice about it and apologized over and over, but she kept blaming the wax and saying she must have had too much wax on the stick. HUH?! That doesn't even make sense! And for my lip? Thanks for only taking a little bit off! She left all of the leftover wax on my brows and lip and I had to go to the car and rub it off with hand lotion since that is all I had! When I saw my brows, I wanted to cry, but I wasn't going to give this lady the satisfaction knowing she upset me to the point of crying. I just wanted to get out of there!! All she kept saying is "a little bit from a brow pencil and no one will ever notice" Well thanks for that, but I don't own a brow pencil because before I saw you, I never needed one! I took a picture of my left brow and sent it to my regular girl and she was shocked! She has been doing this for years and was baffled at how this lady could even take the middle section of my brow off! She didn't charge me for the brow wax, but she definitely charged me for the $12 for the lip which she barely took any hair off! I had to go home and pluck my LIP!! I am in the spa industry (massage therapist) in San Luis Obispo so I did try my best to see the best in this lady, but I just couldn't!! Here is a bit of advice Teresa...when you make a mistake and wax someone's eyebrow off...just let her walk out without paying ANYTHING! And please just apologize and not make the excuse that it is your wax stick and not your lack of experience! Especially don't tell me that it will grow back in 2 weeks!! The LEAST you could've done is let me leave with the little bit of dignity I had left and with the $15 I gave you still in my pocket! It is bad enough that I have to walk around with my husband and son in Solvang for the rest of the day trying to get the left over wax you left on me and the funny looks I got cause I am missing part of my eyebrow. It is embarrassing and I cry every time I look in the mirror. Please ladies...don't go see Teresa! You will thank me! read more

When I finally got through, there was no apology for being hung up on, and the person who answered, whom I believe to be the owner, made it seem as if whatever phone issues they were experiencing were my fault. As a local and potential customer, if this is how I'm treated over the phone, there is absolutely no way I would ever spend my money there, especially where there are several great salons in our valley. After calling another salon we were directed to Secret Garden. Mila brought us right in and did an amazing job on my girl. She really saved the day. As a consequence, my daughter looked gorgeous and was full of confidence meeting our nephew in law's very large family and many friends. She danced all night! Thank you Mila.
