After making a couple of phone calls, he said to meet him back there at noon. This spontaneous river ride turned out to be the highlight of our week long trip. Nate loves the river and is knowledgeable about the fish, local birds, wildlife, and history. He truly enjoys his job and wants you to get the most out of your time on his boat. There is an easy pathway that offers stunning views of the Rogue River and four overlook points for capturing great photos. Find the Rogue Gorge Day-Use Area and parking lot on the west side of OR 62, just north of Union Creek Resort. It is a quick, easy stop, well worth your time.

First, this was kind of an add on stop after grabbing a bite to eat just around the corner. First thing we did was explore the path. I should add that the path is relatively flat and easy to navigate for anyone that has a hard time with hikes. This is a paved path and is pretty flat from one end to the other. There are a few spots you can go down steps for a closer vantage point, but the most steps you will encounter is about 10 at any one point. Great shots of the Rogue can be captured all along the pathway as you walk to the upper point of the viewing area. Just guessing, but round trip I'd say that the total walk distance is approx. 1/2 mile. Now to go into details as to why only three stars. I can't go without saying, the bathrooms here are absolutely disgusting. My gf turned and walked away after the initial door opening/smell that escaped when the door was opened. For this reason alone I had to deduct 1 - 2 stars. If you are just here for the views and don't use the restroom facilities then I'd highly recommend. Really cool all in all minus the bathroom experience.

This beautiful state park is just north of the town of Medford and runs along the southern bank of…read morethe Rogue River. Though the river is known for its rapids up near Grants Pass, this section is mostly placid with one section of faster water that the little fishing motor boat we saw had no problem with. The dirt, mostly single track trail runs fairly close to the river, with access points for fisherman or fun like throwing rocks into the water. There were plenty of birds to view. We saw one mountain bike and and some sections of the trail had clearly been travelled by horses. There was one groomed loop that was an interpretive trail, with numbered stations but no info. It just may be too early in the season to get maps at entry since the booth was unmanned when we entered the large parking lot. A good time was had by all, including the dogs, though they came home with DOZENS of ticks so be careful out there.

Once we paid and entered the Park we noted 75+% of the grassy/picnic areas were unusable due to being showered by sprinkler system - thus all visitors were uncomfortably squished together in the few dry spots available. The watering system went on-and-on for about an hour and a half. Thus a giant F/U shout-out is due the OR State Park workers who are either too stupid, too lazy, or just plain so inconsiderate to be bothered to handle their park maintenance chores like watering outside of the middle of the afternoon when the Park usage is at it's peak. And note there are two sets of restrooms in the Park - both apparently permanently closed. Instead there are portable units with no running water. So your $5 entry fee is paying for what, exactly? Too bad this place is so poorly managed. It could and should be a community asset. Instead it's just another example of poorly run government. BTW - when the Park employees did come around to finally shut off the spinklers (some of which watered the parking lot as much as the grass) - they didn't bother to do anything else (like check to make sure folks paid the entry fee, or pick up any trash, or bother to check if patrons were complying with Park Rules re alcohol, etc). What a waste of a resource...

Look to the right for signs and paddle hard to make it in to their dock!…read more This little hidden local secret needs to be shared by all who are rafting the Rogue. A small convenience store with a hot food window is a perfect 1/2 way stopping point while rafting the Rogue River toward Shady Cove. Inside the store it is a bit cluttered and tight, but they've got everything you'll need to replenish and recharge your batteries. We easily found some chocolate and strawberry milks for the kids and some takis and a decent selection of Mikes Hard in the cooler. Hot foods include: hot dogs, corn dogs , veggie burgers, hamburgers and cheeseburgers ($5.50, double cheese burger $6.50). The food is decent with all the fixings available. After paddling, swimming and soaking up the sun, a good burger along with an ice cold beer seems to taste EVEN better than normal. The best part of it all is all the picnic tables along the riverbank to just sit back, chill and enjoy your grub. Oh yeah, don't forget to use they're old school outhouse up the path and to the left of their store before you go! It's a memorable experience! #thegoodlife

We were on our way to a remote-ish campsite whose Google maps directions were sketchy, to say the least. After taking an initial stab at it, and immediately failing to earn my Orientation badge, I decided to turn around and stop at that station we'd passed on our way into the woods. Best decision of my week. The friendly folks who greeted us were manning the fort with ease, despite a crazy-ass series of fires that had been burning all around us and had shifted the Forest Service's staffing needs every which way. One of the rangers was down from Eugene, covering the desk while the rest of the local crew was out trying to cut through smoke in Grants Pass. When we mentioned the site we were trying to find, one of gents in the office knew exactly where we were going. He started out by drawing us a map, and then asked if we had the key to get into the gate. There was a moment of confusion about a new lock, and the ranger made a call and got us all sorted out. After the little mix-up, though, he wanted to make sure that we'd get there OK. So instead of just packing us off with a map and good luck, he got in his truck and led us all the way there, and made sure that we got in the gate before he left. During our 5-day stay at the absolutely beautiful site, we ran into just one other ranger on the road, and he was super kind, too. The folks here make you feel safe -- which when you're camping in a forest where you know there are wildfires is HUGE -- and at the same time, they gave us our space -- which when you're camping at a remote site in the woods is totally what you want. Oh, also: taxidermy. Thumbs way, way up.
