I picked the largest pine cones, hidden in hubby's hoodie (I didn't have a bag), to experiment on. The Magnolia tree greeted us, as we entered the park, was in full bloom. I think it's scented, too! My favorite about this park, was the playground. I spent more time swinging with the youngest grandson, and watching him and his 8 years old playmate (friends since toddlers), and walking around to the nearest creek & bridge. If it wasn't feeling like about to rain, we could have stayed much longer! Oh, they also have to drive back to Portland, today, so off they go, and we stayed longer.

********** NOT DOG FRIENDLY **********…read more We travel with our dog so we drove here specifically after seeing many online recommendations that this was a great place to bring your pup. It was a challenge finding parking but when we did, we excitedly walked to the park anticipating the enjoyment we would all have. Unfortunately, when we arrived, we were greeted with multiple signs advising that the park does not allow dogs and encouraging people to walk their dogs around outside the park. We did that, as well as attempting one of the trail options but we have better options for that without driving here, hence the two stars. We also understand the necessity of not allowing dogs is specific locations so this review is for anyone researching because the Internet has told them this is a dog friendly place. It is not.

Once I was on the greenway, there was only one section where I had to leave the path to go on a road for a short distance of maybe a tenth of a mile. The path is paved the entire way. Several places have a black pavement that does hold a bunch of heat. I ran on a sunny July morning and it definitely got toasty at times. The creek, the breeze, and the sporadic shade helped to counter the heat. There were a couple parks along the way and the one I stopped at had a water fountain where I was able to refill my bottles. Traffic noise throughout as the highway is close. Lots of bike riders.

Generally it was nicely and smoothly paved albeit with a few sand sections and bumps. Generally it was a few degrees cooler than the rest of the area due to its proximity to the creek and the shade. No mosquitoes while we were biking. We biked directly from the Ashford dog park to the Medford dog park (~ 10.5 miles), passing tons of raspberry bushes, dogs, trailer parks, a baseball arena and lots of parks. The one issue we often had was which way to turn when we came to splits. Generally we followed other bikers but did find the intersections not well labelled. It took us just a minute to figure it out but be warned. Also we crossed roads a few times but these intersections were easy. Biking with children should not be too much trouble.

We were on our way to a remote-ish campsite whose Google maps directions were sketchy, to say the least. After taking an initial stab at it, and immediately failing to earn my Orientation badge, I decided to turn around and stop at that station we'd passed on our way into the woods. Best decision of my week. The friendly folks who greeted us were manning the fort with ease, despite a crazy-ass series of fires that had been burning all around us and had shifted the Forest Service's staffing needs every which way. One of the rangers was down from Eugene, covering the desk while the rest of the local crew was out trying to cut through smoke in Grants Pass. When we mentioned the site we were trying to find, one of gents in the office knew exactly where we were going. He started out by drawing us a map, and then asked if we had the key to get into the gate. There was a moment of confusion about a new lock, and the ranger made a call and got us all sorted out. After the little mix-up, though, he wanted to make sure that we'd get there OK. So instead of just packing us off with a map and good luck, he got in his truck and led us all the way there, and made sure that we got in the gate before he left. During our 5-day stay at the absolutely beautiful site, we ran into just one other ranger on the road, and he was super kind, too. The folks here make you feel safe -- which when you're camping in a forest where you know there are wildfires is HUGE -- and at the same time, they gave us our space -- which when you're camping at a remote site in the woods is totally what you want. Oh, also: taxidermy. Thumbs way, way up.
