recently attended the Arlington Environmental Collection and Recycling Event (E-Care) on October 5, and I couldn't be more pleased with the experience! I participated in the e-cycling event coordinated by the county and the whole process went smoothly. There were enough volunteers/staff directing cars where to go and how and where to pay. There was a long line of people when I showed up, but they made sure cars kept flowing and it was quick! Securis ran the recent Oct. 5 Arlington County e-Care recycling event. My husband loaded up my car with old paint, oil, and fuel cans. I expected long lines and some back-and-forth about what they'd accept. To my pleasant surprise, the event was well-staffed at every point, so it was clear where to enter, where to go, and which line accepted which items. We barely even waited in line. Even after I misspoke about what was in certain containers (used oil, not fuel as labeled) the staff was SO nice and understanding. I hope Securis runs future such recycling events. read more

It was well-run and had a lot of people coming by to drop off items, but it was very well-staffed and there was minimal wait. We were impressed with the process flow to drop off items and the short wait time to drive our car through to the drop off point. They had many lanes set up so there weren't any backups. Went to the Loudoun County electronics recycling event today and it was efficient and smooth. Really no waiting. We were quickly moved into a sorting line depending upon if you had general recycling or monitors or hard drives, etc. Only had to open the trunk and they removed it and that was it. It took, approx 5 minutes max from the time I arrived to when I left. Lots of people working and those I engaged with had great attitudes. Great service and so easy! Found this company online as I was looking to have some hard drives destroyed. They charge $10 per hard drive and you can watch them put it in the machine and see the output. Certainly nothing left of that drive and no worry about the info getting into the wrong hands. Someone would need one massive tube of super glue to try and put that sucker back together!!!! In all honesty, this place is super easy and its amazing all of the hardware and things they take. Its on their website as to what they will accept vs not accept and the not accept list is super small. I will be back here as I get rid of old hardware and have a few more hard drives to have destroyed. Highly recommend you checking them out if you need this type of service. read more

There are two schools of thought when it comes to "destroying" or rendering data on a hard drive or other media unusable. Up until recently, I used the "Gold Standard" and most importantly, FREE and excellent Darik's Boot and Nuke (http://www.dban.org/) to overwrite the disk a bunch of times using a variety of data sanitation standards including an approved DoD method. I've been using DBAN for years when re-building systems and have never had any concerns or issues about whether or not all files on a disk where wiped and unrecoverable. However, there a few limitations that have cropped up the past few years: * Lack of optical drive on newer systems - This is not a huge problem since I downloaded DBAN onto a flash drive and just boot from there, but for some people this might prove to be technically challenging; I know cuz I spent a hour walking a friend of mine through this. So if you are not familiar with downloading .ISO files, making flash drives bootable, and fiddling around with a computer BIOS, then using a software overwrite program might not be for you. * Time - depending on what data sanitation standard and how many "passes" or disk overwrites you choose, using DBAN or any the disk erasure program could take from 1-2 hours. Not a huge deal, but kind of annoying to keep checking back on the status of the job. The second and increasingly more popular method of data sanitation is outright mechanical destruction of the disk, whether it be traditional platter Hard drive, electronic SSD, portable flash drives, etc. The military and other industries go through the added step of degaussing, or demagnetizing, a disk before shredding but thankfully most people won't need to go that far. Securis has monthly electronics recycling events where not only will they take your old TVs, monitors, computers, etc, but also will perform disk (mechanical) shredding for $10 a piece. I've had a few old hard disks lying around over the years so I finally decided to save myself the time and headache of hooking them up to a USB adapter and spend hours overwriting them. Just drive up to their warehouse in Chantilly during one of the designated Saturdays, and tell one of the techs how many drives are to be destroyed. A few minutes later, you're lifted up to a truck where a massive wood-chipper looking device shreds your disk before your eyes...its actually kind of cool. $30 was definitely a good trade off for not having to spend a whole Saturday afternoon cooped up in my office with tedious computer work since I was done in about 15 minutes. I attended the Securis community shred/recycle day at Dulles Town Center on February 26. This was free and ran from 7am to 10am. I arrived about 9:30 and the line was halfway around the shopping center so I feared I would not make it in time. This was the most organized process I've ever seen for events such as this. I made it to the site within 10-15 minutes - absolutely amazing given the amount of cars in front of me. All of the volunteers and people running the event were in tune with each other and it ran like a well oiled machine. While I only had a box of documents to shred I could not believe the amount of TV's and electronics they collected in this short amount of time. I'll look forward to the next event. This company holds a monthly recycling/shredding event -- check their website for details. It is well-run by very friendly, courteous, competent, and helpful people. If you desire, they will let you witness the actual shredding of your sensitive materials (i.e. hard-drives). It was fun to watch, even though I had complete trust in them. Be sure to familiarize yourself with the materials they can and cannot accept (although they do accept quite a wide variety). I will definitely be using their service again. Great company... I first used the services of Securis when I had many pc hard drives that needed to be shredded. I discovered that they also recycle many other types of electronics. My household practice now is to set aside "anything that has a plug" to take to Securis. I drive from Leesburg, VA to the Securis location in Chantilly for their monthly recycling events.
