It manufactured…read morethe famous Walt Disney Invisible Dog Party Trick, which is how this spacious place received its name in 1863. Now it is a gem of an Art Center. Greatly stumbling upon it while walking down the street to get my food takeout order made me glad because I truly miss going to art galleries/museums/beautiful art exhibits, etc. Seeing the cool artistically created blue bench outside and peering through the front door made me want to view everything. On display is "The Other Side" exhibit by Brothers Steven + William Ladd. Working w/ over 500 inmates within 8 different Correctional Facilities over the last 9 years, these artists bonded w/ them while collaborating w/ them to create masterpieces. Seems truly therapeutic for all involved in the experience! "The Other Side" includes various installations, paintings, drawings, etc. The "Jail Cell" has words lining all in it from responses gathered around the question "What One Word Defines Incarceration For You? "Isolation" was inspired by the experience of seeing an inmate inside a 6-foot cell for causing a jail lockdown. The "Metal Doors and Pathway" consisted of an entire walkway that we could walk down while viewing all of the art throughout the exhibit. It is designed to let you see the structure of what the brothers viewed as they were scanned into the facility before meeting w/ the inmates. Colorful paintings were also on the walls depicting the work that has inspired and that continues to inspire the artists. All in all, it was a deeply.moving exhibit that speaks to social injustices, oppression, lack of humanity and a calll to action that is needed. Claude Lazar was also featured and I love his depictions of the city and world from within the confines of his home or work studio. So beautiful. The setup of the gallery is nice and deceivingly large. The gallery has seats right in the middle of the ground floor and allows you to sit and set the work from the seated position. There's also a downstairs that features more art. It was displaying mostly classical art when I went. The guide here were really informative and when out of her way to talk about the artist and explain his craft.

I have been coming to this gallery even before I lived in NY. This show was the perfect teaser before the big Brooklyn Museum show. When I arrived I was coming in at the same time as the famous rock n roll photographer Mick Rock. As we made our way up the stairs another famous photographer was spotted, Bob Gruen. Both had some exquisite pieces in the show. It was jam packed in the gallery and I definitely had to move some peeps out of the way to get the full Bowie experience. I loved that there was photos I had never seen before. I loved the ones in bright colors! And also the play on form like the dog with Bowie. There was a tour bus photo but it reminded me of taking night trains in Europe. These photographs transported you on the Bowie journey. I adored the photograph of Bowie walking away with the iconic thunderbolt on his back from Lynn Goldsmith! Bowie is one to make an entrance and an exit and always leaves an impression. He is missed by many and he will always hold a special part of NY's heart. I would recommend popping in while the show is up and there's less butts to move! I also noticed I missed a couple cool book events so I will be keeping my eyes peeled for future shows and special guests.

So will likely not come back for any of its events. That said, as a studio itself - it's very informative and easy to digest. I LOVED, LOVED, LOVED the founder's studio next door. A sight to be seen & will be bringing my tourists' friends back. Strongly recommend the studio.

I believe there were 4 shows in the space which has two floors. I was surprised by the quality of the work as well as the large space. It was an impressive feat. The space itself is in an old three-story williamsburg apartment building, where you enter through the ground floor doorway, to the second floor which houses the gallery. There are offices in the back, and then two small cute rooms in the front showing the works. People are quite friendly, it's as though you're in someone's living room.

Visit New York's Storefront for Art and Architecture to view Amanda Williams' installation "What…read moreBlack Is This, You Say?" The exhibit is on the walls of the building which open up as a multifaceted exploration of color, race, and identity. Amanda Williams is a Chicago-based visual artist. Williams initially posted over 120 shades and textures of black on her Instagram account in 2020 which "provide a rich palette of overlapping and divergent narratives and histories that inform Black identity." The exhibit "What Black Is This, You Say?" features 12 of the shades of black explored by Williams in her Instagram posts. Each of the 12 shades is painted onto one of the 12 moving panels of the gallery facade--a different shade of black for each panel. Read each panel and think about what you read. The panels explore themes and narratives around Black culture, like joy, spirituality, and suffering. Check the hours. The exhibit panels were not open on an early Sunday morning, but still worth a quick stop. Such a great use of precious space in SoHo.

Ever read Ayn Rand's "The Fountainhead?...I think iconoclastic Howard Roark would approve of this…read moreinnovative art gallery...at least before he ravaged the sexually frustrated Dominique Francon who whipped him with a riding crop for laughing at her. But I digress... Surely this is the most creatively conceived storefront in New York much less SoHo. Designed by architect Steven Hall and artist Vito Acconci, it's an expansive concrete wall with cantilevered panels of various sizes that expose the art inside at varying degrees. Confused? Look at the photo I posted. Right now, there is a fascinating exhibition from French photographer Frederic Chaubin, who has documented unusual architectural artifacts born during the last two decades of the Cold War. The continuous melding of art and architecture is obviously the running theme of this gallery and well worth a peek when you're in the neighborhood.
