my college gave students discounts for painting pottery here, and i obviously went to have fun. the experience makes me want to come here again. this place made me feel like a kid again, awkwardly trying to use paint brushes. we did a pretty ok job, no? on a more formal note, the workers here are kind and attentive. they clearly explain things, and are eager to answer questions and help you out. super family friendly, and college kid friendly, too! there's a cafe right by it too if you want to grab coffee and a pastry to enjoy while you paint.

So much fun! Wine and cheese night Friday 6-10! Adults only and byob! Me and my boyfriend went because we had groupons but the prices are reasonable even without a discount. You pay for the piece you want to paint and a $7 studio fee for paints and the kiln. On Friday during the wine and cheese night, I believe the studio fee goes down to 3.50. The range of things to paint is enormous--everything from seasonal decor to plates and mugs and even Yoda. No, you read that right. You can paint your own Yoda statue. Seriously, they have something for everyone. Once you pick your piece, the employees will show you the enormous wall of paint and glazes and explain how it works. Most of this is included in your studio fee, but you can opt up a little bit with a 3$ charge for some nifty glazes with marbling effects. With all the options for paint and glaze and pottery, this does not have to add to your attic box of kitsch decor given to you by crazy Aunt Irma. They make painting something tasteful and cool really easy. Once you're finished painting, you hand your piece off to the employees who will give you a time and day it will be available to pick up, and voila! Instant night out with the girls or your boyfriend that doesn't involve a movie or a half dozen cocktails. As much as I love the cocktails, that stuff adds up, and it's nice to have a little bit of variety now and then. My boyfriend and I painted mugs for each other and it was kind of adorable watching him get all artsy. I'd highly recommend this place. They even make reservations for parties or larger groups. So don't miss out! It's relaxing and fun (especially with a glass of wine on a Friday night.)

Rented the party room for my daughters bday party. They had a huge assortment of pottery to choose from.

The week prior I saw someone working with beads at The Art Center and asked about her project. She was making a dress for a wedding. I asked if she made repairs and did not, but referred me to the Bead Couture. I offered my bracelet to see if she could fix it. I tried many times, with no sustainable success. It was time for a professional or at least someone who has the tools, which she did. I waited while she worked on the bracelet. And in a few short minutes, it was like a got a new piece of jewelry. While It is of no great monetary value, I like it. Take your broken pieces of jewelry and let them fix it or redesign it. There are lovely contemporary pieces that are designed by the owner and there is a large catalog of vintage buttons and other gems that you must check out. I was pleasantly surprised at the reasonable charge for the repair. I will be back. Emma Childers

And in a world where most people just email or send a Facebook message, finding a piece of fun mail is even more special. This is why I love Mrs. Post. Mrs. Post is a brand new stationery and gift store in East Memphis. And while you're grandma will be excited to receive one of their cute letterpress cards from you, there's nothing stuffy about the shop. Before they opened Mrs. Post, owners Lindsey Cross and Natalie Ellis-Chang designed a line of wholesale paper products called Lemon Tree Paper. They've got about 400 pieces, and each one is printed locally. All of the Lemon Tree Paper invitations, cards, and notes are available at Mrs. Post. My favorite thing about the shop was the small, but well thought out collection of gifts. There's a lot of whimsy in a small space. I was totally smitten with the Jonathan Adler whale shaped salt and pepper shakers and the surprise balls (the package reads "to enjoy, please destroy"). They've also got candles, baby booties and party decorations you'll want to leave up well after the fun is over.
