Lost so much hair that I cried when I got home. Sat down to get washed with beautifully intact, fine blonde hair, got up with three giant knots that I brushed out SOAKING WET for 15 minutes, which made the hair snap out even worse. The hair wash lady washed me like I was a dog at a pet groomer's. So rough, tangled me up, and used almost no conditioner and it dried up all the softness from my very delicate hair. She even bent my ears as far down as they could go to clean behind them. Uh, okay? Apparently she doesn't know what nerves are. Do you know how hard it is to take care of fine blonde hair? I was just starting to grow it in thicker with collagen and vitamin D, too. Lost all of the hair I grew, and I feel ugly. I totally feel the spots on my head where the knots ripped out chunks of my hair. I thought you were supposed to go into salons and come out feeling beautiful. I brought my own brush and was VERY SPECIFIC about the sort of hair that I have and I spoke up when the hair wash lady was hurting me. I feel ugly and old with all this hair missing. I asserted myself and complained about this too. I'm not going to wash my hair for a week and walk around greasy so that the oils hopefully repair the damage, I cannot wash it in this condition so much hair will fall out. I am so upset. The hair dresser across from the girl cutting my hair was throwing me dirty looks and rolling her eyes, 4 feet away, like I wouldn't see it? Classy. Wreck a client's hair and then make fun of her for being upset over it. Clearly she cares a lot about her work (not!) As soon as I got home, I booked my hair cut with Andrew Stevens, 2 months in advance. He's the only person that understands how to wash hair without ripping it all out of my head. I didn't use him this time because its a long wait for an appointment, but I'm booking for the whole year in advance starting today. If I ever go elsewhere, I'm going to have to ask for a dry cut, or I am washing my own hair with my own products. What are salons even for? I already bring my own brush because this happens so often, almost no one understands British hair. Never again. Good thing I used a groupon cuz I would never pay full price for this experience. See the picture I attached- does that look like hair that just came out of the salon? I can't even brush it without losing hair. I even came back after I left because the ends were still chunky and messy, when I like a uniform, clean, healthy end. The girl cut it twice and within the hour it went back to looking like split-end, dead hair. Not her fault, it was the wash girls'. My hair is just destroyed now. Washed out my beautiful blonde highlights into copper, too. Did she wash me with peroxide and egg whites? Thanks for making me scary in time for Halloween. Update: Three days later, even more of my hair has fallen out. Today is November 1st and my experience at self image salon happened on Thursday, October 29th. I stopped driving and took pictures of my hair, because my ears and the back of my head are very cold. I put my hair up because it keeps snagging and dropping all over my car and clothes. I cannot believe the way I look. I have thinning hair and bald spots all over my head! I look like I have male pattern baldness! I am a young woman! Do not ever let the woman that destroyed my beautiful, expensive hair touch another person's head, what this salon did to me is just cruel!!! What do you not like me or something? I would never do this to someone, let alone a paying customer!!! I attached a picture from before the salon destroyed me. You cannot see the color very well, because I took the pic in a dimly lit restaurant, but do you see how long and pretty and healthy my hair looked before? I didn't realize that washing hair was complicated. Don't go to this salon unless you want to look like you've got some kind of disease by the time you get out. I wish someone on yelp had posted an honest review, before I fell victim. I would still have my beautiful hair if someone else left a review when they had a bad experience. P.S.- All I had here was a wash, cut and blow out. Pretty simple. This is the gold medal of horrible salon experiences. I didn't even have a chemical process! read more

I must say, I know this salon has been in town for years, but I had never gone. I had a color issue I wasn't happy with, and Tom (the owner) gave me an appointment with Concetta. She "corrected" part of the issue, and I went back for a Magic Sleek the next week. Much better than Keratin. When I decided I still didn't like the highlights, I decided to let them start fresh. Just color back to brown and then add the highlights. Well, Concetta was able to add low lights to fix my hair to what I love, and Tom, he didn't charge me. He felt I spent enough in his shop in the past two weeks. I said, but you guys didn't mess up, you were fixing an issue. He said, no, it's fine. But thank you. I highly recommend! My experiences with salons on Long Island have been really hit or miss. Finding Self Image was such a relief. I loved the convenience of being able to book an appointment online. I was seated right away without a wait. All of the staff I interacted with were friendly and welcoming and made me feel like a valued client. My stylist JP is an absolute star. She took the time to listen to what I wanted and what was frustrating me, I noticed she actually studied the photos I brought in while I was having my hair shampooed and she made adjustments to the style based on my hair type (moving my part to accommodate a cow lick in my bangs, using a razor to get rid of the bulk in the back). My hair looks fantastic and I will absolutely return as long as I live here. I felt like I was always in capable hands. read more

LIke many others I've had some good experiences with Long Island salons. In the past 2 years, I thought I had found the perfect hair stylist - so I was just devastated when that salon failed and my favorite stylist is now no longer working. I researched salons and I found such good reviews of Self Image, that I thought I'd take a chance and give it a try. I am very loyal to my hair stylists - so with fingers crossed I tried Self Image. I can honestly say that this salon beats all the others I've gone to in the past - even including the ones in Manhattan that I used when I lived there. Teresa truly rises way above all my other stylists! She is an artist, with a wonderfully caring, down to earth approach. She listens carefully to my expectations - and then, she remarkably and perfectly delivers exactly the most perfect cut, with great attention to detail. The color she designed for me was honestly the best and most flattering color, I've ever had! All my family and friends have raved to me about how great I look with my new color - and my fabulous short angled bob cut. I've found my forever salon and hair stylist! And I don't want to neglect to say what a great ambience this salon has, along with having terrific other people, attending to hair washing and color prep. Great place. Never been here and bought a groupon for haircut and full highlights - loved the way my hair color came out and it wasn't an easy job because I had about 2 different colors in my hair from previous dye jobs. I didn't give them 5 stars bc the woman who was taking care of my highlights and supposed haircut got busy while dying my hair and asked if another girl could cut my hair. The girl looked pretty novice and so I declined - and I thought it was unprofessional considering I had an appointment. The original girl did all my hair coloring, hair cut and blow out in the end so I was happy. Space is great, clean, large, and open. People were friendly. I would definitely go back. read more

I have been going to Self Image religiously to have my hair cut and colored by Jessica at this salon for 8 years...my first real hair cut as a child actually took place at this salon! (I'm 31). Jessica gives me so much time and attention...I can't even describe how many people I've encountered who have complimented my high lights thinking I'm a real blond! (I'm a true brunette). I like to do a different shade of blonde every time I go-and Jessica never fails to mix the perfect shade complimentary to my skin tone! On another note, I've also had my hair cut by other stylists-and I trust each and everyone employed there! Nobody has ever gone "scissor happy" and taken too much off and they truly all are super talented. I live in Manhattan and come back to Long Island every 3 months to get my color and cut. Everyone is always shocked when I tell them I get my hair done in LI (thinking I must get it done in the city)...but I don't trust any place as much as I do them! read more

I went to this salon after hearing they did the magic sleek keratin treatment. My regular place had done the Brazilian keratin about 2 months prior and it had already washed out, leaving my hair super frizzy with awkward curls in the front. Concetta did the treatment on me and reassured me this will leave my hair completely frizz free. I asked her if she could get rid of the awkward curls in the front while leaving some waves throughout the rest and she said she could. I washed my hair about a day and a half later and my hair was super shiny and no frizz anywhere. The only thing i didn't love was that i have naturally fine hair so the treatment made my hair look a bit flat in the front but as I've been washing it I've gotten some body back to it and I've got some natural wave in it- without all that frizz. Love this place! I bought a groupon for a haircut and partial highlight and was pleasantly surprised when I walked into Self Image to get my hair done. I was greeted politely and then taken to meet my stylist Melissa. She was amazing and made me feel very comfortable and at ease from the moment I sat in her chair. The salon is lovely, BIG, open and full of sunlight! And the people there are what make it special...from Meliasa my stylist to all the other women who work there, it felt like one big family. My hair looked a,axing upon completion, and they even sent me 2 follow up emails (one including coupons for a future visit) to make sure I was satisfied with their service.
