I had my wash and hair cut with Nikki (not sure if I'm spelling her name correctly) and it was a great experience. She was very receptive to my requests and answered my questions, as well as gave some recommendations based on my hair type, length, etc. I appreciated that a lot since I'm not someone who always know what will look great for my face shape and hair type. For reference, I have pretty thick, long, straight hair. She gave me long layers, thinned it out a little, trimmed off 2ish inches, and gave some face framing layers and curtain bangs. She took her time cutting to make sure everything was even and looked great. I was really satisfied with how it looked and will definitely be coming back for my next cut. She released a surprising amount of latent tension in my body, leaving me feeling light and lifted. Rumi also guided me in the right direction for my primary objective - to develop a regular self-care regimen for keeping my hair beautiful, hydrated and healthy. Showed up for my appointment and sat in the chair to see that the stylist was extremely sick visibly coughing over and over again with no mask on. I explained to the front desk that I do not feel comfortable getting my hair done today because someone was visibly sick, they were rude and acted like they weren't aware - while the lady was coughing away behind them. I am very sorry but if one of your employees is visibly sick you should take precautions to protect people. I do not feel comfortable getting pneumonia over a hair cut. And I think they should have been more accommodating about my discomfort. read more

She quickly grasped the style I was going for, asked a few clarifying questions to help her gauge and confirm what I was okay with, and I got an excellent haircut. I came home and my wife was visibly happier with my haircut than when I came back from barbershops, which in this neighborhood, can charge almost as much as a salon haircut (my last place charged me $55 for a mediocre cut and nicked my neck with a razor, which I only noticed after I got home--after tipping $10 to boot). As a guy, if you're looking for a more sophisticated cut, I would highly recommend Sen as an upgrade alternative. It's definitely not just a salon for women. Also, I got excellent matcha green tea from Japan and very relaxing head and neck massages. I was very impressed and plan to return for my next haircut. read more

This place was awesome! It's very small so when I originally walked in on a Sunday, they weren't able to take me. I came back after making an appointment. The receptionist was so kind and friendly. Mai was my stylist, and she was fun and skillful. She made my hair look a million times better. I got a cut and blow dry. I absolutely love the bonus head massage while you get your hair washed. I don't give a negative review lightly.... But I do feel the need to give a description of my experience at Sen. I've been going to the same hair stylist for the past 4 years on the upper west side but was looking for somewhere new, closer to home. When I called to book an apt, it was a bit odd. They kept asking if I was ok with a male stylist... my current stylist is male but after being asked so many times, I started to wonder if there was something wrong with the stylist available... I ended up booking an apt for a haircut and partial highlight..I arrived at the salon, a short walk from my apt. It looks similar to the pictures. I waited a few minutes and then was met by my stylist. I started telling him about what I wanted to have done. We talked back and forth for a few minutes and then motioned back and forth about the cut. He wanted to do a round "bowl" type of cut but after a few minutes of back and forth and head shaking (from me) we were in agreement about the square cut (in back) and length... Then we started talking about highlights and that's when it became very clear how hard it is to have a hair stylist who doesn't speak much English. He brought over an assistant (I think) and another stylist and I tired to communicate what I wanted done... it was difficult... I tried to say that I would rather them error on the side of darker than too light and I was met with blank stares... after trying to explain again, I got a bit nervous and opted to forgo highlights and just have a haircut. I had just washed my hair so I didn't opt for them to wash my hair... 10 minutes later my haircut was done... it was ok, nothing great, but the stylist did take off the correct amount, which was good.. The charge for my 20 minute time at the salon (including talking about the cut / highlights) was $70 including my first customer discount... Honestly, the price point is way, way too high for the experience..my haircut was so quick, it seemed like a barber and I don't know how I would trust someone to color my hair if we couldn't communicate. This is a $20 haircut... definitely not the $70 price point. Spending $70 for a 10 minute haircut from some who doesn't speak English and you can't communicate your preferences is just not with it read more

The first time I came to Sen I had a great experience. But yesterday when I came in early for my toner appointment, my stylist (who I think is the owner), instead of using toner, colored my hair, which is a much more expensive service, and she did not verify with me that it was okay that this service would be different (more than double the price) than what I had made an appointment for. I assumed she was applying toner again but with a more targeted technique. After all, I made an appointment for a toner, and the last time I was in, she advised I maintain the color I wanted with a toner. But nope, it was a 70/80 dollar color job. Not what I had come in there for. If I had known I was not getting a toner, but instead a color, I wouldn't have asked for a trim-- a .5 to 1 inch trim along the bottom of my hair-- a trim that took 20 minutes to complete-- a trim that cost as much as a full hair cut. I walked out paying much, much much more than I anticipated. I felt guilty that I hadn't stopped them sooner, but I'm not an expert at coloring techniques! It felt like I was taken advantage of. They assumed I would be ok changing my appointment from toner to color (50 dollar diff in price). And I guess they felt comfortable charging a full haircut price for a 20 minute trim... They were very polite and kind and easy to talk with otherwise. And I'm sure most of their clientele drops tons of cash all the time. Still, I cannot understand how a trim costs 80 dollars (10% off b/c it was my first time) OR how its fair to change a client's color service without verifying the increased cost is okay. I was completely shocked to pay double what I anticipated. read more

Mai asked to see a picture of what kind of cut I wanted for my daughter and she executed it perfectly. I've been looking for a hair cutter for a while and I hoped Sen would be the place--it is most definitely not for me. The stylists are super nice and everything, but I went in for a regular cut/trim and the prices are just not worth it. The cut itself was mediocre too. Much of my hair was damaged from previous bleaching (at another salon) and I just wanted the damaged ends to be cut while also giving me some layers. I didn't want her to use a straight razor on my hair either. She cut about 2 inches (which she said she would and that was fine with me), but then she started using a razor! I didn't say anything because I was just surprised, but I knew right then I would not be back. The cut was in the $100 range---not worth it at all. Even the styling at the end was very flat and fell short. Maybe it's a decent place for kids since they seem to cater to and have a lot of children clientele, but as a woman in her 30s, this place was just disappointing. 2 stars though because the staff is truly polite. read more

Actually I already went this place twice. Owner chinami gets your style right away and also she is aware current trend so that you not going into typical hipster style. I normally tell her minimal things I want (like shorter on side and keep long on top) then she tailor my hair style as bespoke manner with her aesthetic point of view. What I like the most is how my hair grow at a month later. Because of her precision scissor skills, your hair even blend well at the time. My husband and I have both been working with Chinami as our stylist for about 15 years, so we're delighted to be going to her at her own salon now! We live in Williamsburg, so the trip is quite easy on the G train to the Hoyt Schermerhorn stop. The shop is just a couple blocks from the train, and I think a lot of other subway lines converge in downtown Brooklyn right around there. The salon is really comfortably laid out, and it feels very inviting. We both like the neighborhood, and even though the shop is on busy Atlantic Ave, once you step down into the space, it is very quiet and relaxing. Nice selection of music, and nicely furnished. Then there's Chinami herself--she's a gifted hair stylist. She's really good about communicating with us as clients to figure out what we're looking for, she has a great memory for what we did the last time if we're looking to repeat it, and she's also good at keeping us looking up to date. Not necessarily chasing the latest men's style trends, mind you, but fresh and put together. She's really good with suggestions, particularly at those times when we've been trying for a change and aren't really sure which way to go. She's also got that special "stylist sense" where she knows if you're feeling chatty that day or if you just need to chill with a magazine or even doze off (! I know, but there's something about having my head combed that makes me very drowsy. Maybe I'm part dog?). She's a pleasure to work with. Mai did an excellent job with my hair! I was majorly in need of a trim/bang/layers cleanup and she more than delivered. She was consultative without being pushy (a difficult balance to strike!) and extremely friendly. She took the time to get it right, but I was still out of there with everything done and blown out in an hour. I also got out with all of that fixing for under $100 including a 20% tip.
