This place has been a part of my life since my high school days. When I know longer wanted to do my hair for the summer for sure...or for any 6 week period I would go to their spot when it was on Flatbush and St. Marks. Box braids were my signature and to for to a place that provided the hair was a plus! Old habits die hard so when I wanted to braid my hair for a long trip I went back to what I know. They are still at a decent price point that will get you hair, braids that last, don't fall out, and are super sweet. read more

Sena's is my all-time favorite place for braids. I've been a customer for nearly 25 years! Quality work, clean, family environment. I've always had a positive experience & beautiful style: braids, twists, weaves. I love the owner, Fallah, and she always has a experienced, pleasant woman working there. Please, do not be scared off by the "gambling den" community newsletter story. As a media person, I can say that was some of the worse biased "reporting" I've ever seen -- even for a local community newsletter. Sadly, the situation was the result of gentrification and tactics to push the African braid shop out of our community after the Nets stadium was built. (I'm happy they have now found a more welcoming location/neighbors.) In that former location, neighbors of the adjoining buildings, which had recently gone "condo/upscale" prided themselves on passing by snapping shots of any "suspicious black" people going inside the shop, which meant lots of black women like myself. They plastered racist notes on the door & called police almost daily. The women, who were mostly new immigrants, were terrified of the neighbors, who never actually spoke to them. Often they came into the shop in pairs, sat down and stared and mocked the African women. Their goal was to interrupt the business & shut them down. I worked with the owner to investigate this situation & help her hire a lawyer and protect her rights. The braid shop was never involved in any illegal activity and remained open but the intimidation continued and luckily, the owner found a new neighborhood instead of going out of business. Loyal customers follow her wherever she goes - that's how good their work is! Apologies for the long review but I had to speak up for these hard-working, beautiful woman because I witnessed this situation firsthand and see that some reviews include that newsletter story. Sena's is a beautiful experience, I've spent many hours eating delicious, home-cooked Senegalese meals with the women & their families. And after braiding my hair here for 25 years, I would never recommend anyplace else in New York! read more

well I wouldn't recommend this place because I went for large knotless and end it up with a completely different style also being overcharge and the length was not even that long and hair. I notice that every time I go the prices are more for the same hair style I had done 3 times at this place it doesn't make any sense to me. the people there it just greedy not going there ever again read more

Hi! I've been wanting to write a review about this salón for a long time. On august I took a trip to NYC (I'm from Argentina) and I decided to get my braids done. I've had my hair braided here twice. The first time - box braids turned out lovely. The second time - the marley twists were meh. They were not tight at the root, so after 1 week I had to go back and request a touch-up. The touch-up was done grudgingly and half-assed. The salon is slightly over average in comparison to other African salons in terms of professionalism. They also overcharged me for the twists - compared to prices in Harlem ($140). I will say that if you have thick natural hair - do NOT come here. Granted, I have yet to go to African hair braiders who weren't reckless with my natural hair (4b)- yanking it around like a rag doll, combing it harshly with tiny combs. But Sena was no different. I really feel foolish for putting my hair in their care. I guess you should never trust a salon to take care of your hair, where everyone wears weave. I am reluctant to write this review because this place is my favorite kept secret. They braid so well here and the stylists are so accommodating and sweet. It's really in the cut and you have to call in to actually find it. But, it's really a great place to get braids or twists. I've been to Sena's twice - unsatisfying and unpleasant experiences. 1st time in June, she changed the price after I got there and waited about 20minutes for her to arrive - no coherent reason/apologies/explanation. I sat in her chair because in her own words, she's a professional with over 20yrs experience. She made medium sized corn rows after 3 attempts to get the size in the picture. Within the week, I realized I'd have to take it out in a few days because my hair (natural) was already coming out of her "professional braiding". Ten days ago, I decided to try for yarn box braids - perhaps corn rows isn't her/their thing + there wasn't much chatter the last time - I prefer a quiet ambience. True to what a reviewer here said, I noticed the girl working on the back was going super fast - I touched the "braids" to find balls of my hair sticking out of the braid because she was taking way too much hair for each braid. I called Sena's attention and she said "the hair is okay, she knows what she's doing" ' I couldn't for the life of me believe my ears - I don't pick money off a tree and expect basic courtesy and service! Needless to say, I asked her to take out all the "okay" braids and balls - she proceeded, sucking her teeth and muttering an unknown language. Now, I find that my hair is already coming out of the braids, front and back - after 10 days. Did I mention they chattered giddily for 6hours nonstop, binding up spittle with my hair and told me after 3hours "you have to go get more yarn downtown" - you "professionals" could've told me you'd need more yarn before starting, no? I tied up what I could of my hair and stepped in the street looking half sane. Great Thursday it was! I choose to believe skill and good service still exists in this city, I will find it! read more

The owner, Sena, likes to change prices on you depending on the length of your hair, whether you bring your own hair for braiding or weaving or if the shop supplies it. Thankfully the shop if big enough so that the customers are not sitting on top of each other. But, if you are a modest chick like myself, DO NOT go there on Saturday afternoon, that's when the barber is and if you don't want the brothers to see your real do under the other do . . . don't do, if you know what I mean. Also, the workers can be rather LOUD at times and very chatty and sometimes they don't pay attention to what you are asking them to do and some of the workers do not understand English and Sena usually has to translate My suggestion, shop around! Last night at about 5pm I was driving home from the grocery store and all I could think about was my hair and the 2 hours it's was going to take to wash it and straighten it. Earlier in the day I went running and destroyed my hair. In preparation for Spring, this will be a 3 times a week routine for me and I already knew my hair was going to become my excuse for skipping out on my workout. As I sat at the light on pacific st and flatbush ave, I looked to my right and the answer to my problem was right there! Sena braiding salon! I double parked the car and went in, asked for the price and told her to give me an hour to go home and get myself together before I returned. I arrived at 7pm and was out by 10pm. Two women worked on my hair. Sena the owner is very gentle and patient, the woman that helped was also pleasant but she braids tighter, which I survived but I wish she didn't grip so tight. This was my first positive experience with African hair braiding in NYC and honestly I vowed to never braid my hair ever again after experiencing rude stylist, sketchy/dirty environments, and too tight braids. decent salon. i went from a twa to back length box braids. sena quoted what i thought to be an ourtrageous price but once i shopped around i found the price quite fair. ramma (sp?) did my braids which i walked out loving. the only thing is i wish they would do a better job of explaining the do's and don'ts of maintenance. i had to go back the following week for them to rebraid my edges, that had slipped out due to my over oiling, which was done at no charged (but i was sure to tip)! planning to go again and certainly would recommend. read more

At the "Beauty Salon" (it is front of their new location on Lincoln Pl in Brooklyn) , I had the most horrible experience. This is my first time going to the salon and the customer service was awful. First of all, to get to the sinks to wash your hair, the employee had to slide a thick wooden piece over so we can go down poorly assembled wooden stairs. I went down the stairs to get my hair washed. While going down the stairs, I slipped and almost fell. After washing and going up the stairs, The employee started doing my Locs . Because my hair looked horrible, I told her to do it over. She did my hair over again and it was not done correctly. Another person stepped in (Sena) and did my Locs over again and I was still dissatisfied with the service. The products she used were harmful to my Locs such as oil sheen, and spiritz (with alcohol). When I told the "hairdressers" I was dissatisfied with the service and if we can work out me receiving a discount, they were not receptive. Because I didn't want the problem to escalate, I gave them the full amount. They were very disrespectful and they Told me "to get my things and get out". The hairdresser, Sena, exclaimed that I should not feel unhappy about the service because she knew what she was doing and she has 25 years of experience. Although she stated she had 25 years of experience, she failed to have her and her other enployees' state certification posted on the wall in the salon, which from my knowledge is required by law. I would not recommend anyone to this salon EVER! This place should be inspected and closed down. read more

I have been consistently going to this Salon for about 15 years to have my hair braided and I love them. The owner is a master hair braider who is warm and professional; she has a core group of women working with her who are also expert braiders. First and foremost they do BEAUTIFUL work. I have been complemented on my hair for years because of the care and precision that goes into their braids. It's equally important for me to point out that my hairline has not been damaged over all this time by their braiding. That's 15 YEARS with no problems-a miracle in the world of braiding- and it's due to their expertise. Each location that they have been in has been cheerful and clean, as braiding salons go. The new one at Franklin is my favorite. If you want to go to a fancy, big name salon just to drop the names of their other clients, then be prepared to drop ridiculous coins for braids. I say: don't go to a steakhouse for fish. If you want cut, color, highlights, etc., find someone who is an expert at those things. But, if you want beautiful braids or weaving done for a reasonable price, you will never find anyone better than these ladies. read more

I can't imagine how anyone would have a horrible experience at this fine establishment. I found them to be very clean, friendly, and professional. I have heard horrible things about this place but since it's close to where I live I have tried to give this place a shot on three separate occasions. All three times Sena has made an appointment with me and then either didn't show up or was over and hour late...I went by there recently at 10 a.m. and the only stylist working there was sleeping (and giving me attitude because she was tired). Sena was at home and seemed unaware that we had spoken the day before. This has happened 3 times. I cannot and will not go back to this place. AVOID. THIS. SALON. I found this salon on yelp while looking for a hair braiding salon. They place is small. The owner started my hair and called two other women from outside to braid my hair. The braids were the wrong size, they dont use combs to part you hair, they use their fingers. After telling the owner the style I received was not what I asked for she shrugged me off and began telling me how nice it looked. I left the salon and the next day while oiling my scalp I noticed that braids were missing and other braids had hair from other braids attached to each other. I called Sena(The owner) she asked me to come in to fix the hair. Another women came to fix my hair and was roughing me up unhappy that she had to fix someone's mistake (I am assuming). When she was finished she placed my hair in a bun, I woke up the next morning took my scarf off and I had a bald spot under the bun. I could not stop crying. I will never EVER refer anyone or return back to this place. and I pray for both the owner and the 3 people who braided my hair and ruined my life.
