i'm not sure why there aren't more 5 star reviews. This is a genuine review i'm writing. I'm a very picky young women and I will speak up when need be. I think the issue is no one else does. Communicate with your stylist! I've gone to Nass twice for small long knotless box braids and she did an amazing job. The second time her daughter did my hair and again, amazing. I simply told her what I wanted and she did it. I expressed I didn't want anything too heavy so she used less hair braiding. I brushed the baby hairs I wanted and it's been over a week with little to no frizz. Great prices too. This is not a new aged salon with ridiculous booking fees and 1000 rules. I went to the shop on Sunday and I got there by 10ish am:) One of the ladies was sweeping and cleaning, and she apologized but she said they had a very long night b4. It wasn't a problem for me and was glad to her cleaning up. I made no plans for that day so I was not in a rush. As soon as she was done she started on my twist. She only stop to get to make a run to the store and a quick bite to eat (I did the same). There was only one person working on my twist and she was fast which pleased me because I usually like when two people work at the same time. I made a yelp account just to write this review . PLEAE DO NOT DO YOUR HAIR AT THIS SALON . The level of unprofessionalism that these ladies exude is something that I've never experienced before I went into the shop a week before the day I wanted to get my hair done for a wedding. The first two photos on the right are pictures from online that showed to them what I'd like to have done. picture of the hairstyle that I requested she told me the price would be $160 for above waist length faux locs. When I got to the salon she told me that I had to also buy the hair which was another $30 making the total so far $190. The photo on the left is a pictures of what was done to my hair after six hours . The entire process was horrible. there were 4 to 5 different people into changing between doing my hair some of which didn't even work there... It seems they just called for help to whom ever they know is available whether or not they are real hairstylist. Not to mention it's was so painful. then they use two different types of hair in my head instead of just the hair the asked me to buy . Some of the locks in the back were so sloppy Not to mention the length of the loc was so short. One day after it was done they started to unravel. When I told her that the price of the hairstyle needed to be changed she refused. These people have no sense of professionalism and no morals they just want the money and don't care how your hair comes out. I started going here a few months ago after finding out that they do crochet braids. So I've gone twice so far for them and both times they did a great job. The braids weren't too tight, they were neat, lasted a long time, and once they started doing my hair it didn't take long. While the styling is good, be warned: They talk a LOT in this salon... more talking than braiding and at times they move like turtles because they're distracted by the bootleg movies they have playing back-to-back alllll day. Last time I went, I arrived around 1pm, they didn't start my hair until around 5pm. I nearly left. There were 3 other customers and about 5 workers who weren't all working the whole time. They claim only 1 braider knows how to do crochet braids, which is a bit ridiculous because they're insanely easy -- but even if true, one of the others could have started the base, which is a simple cornrowed head, which they all can do. Anyhow. I waited FOREVER for a style that took about 2.5 hours. The last worked quickly because she knew I was pissed. In the future I'll attempt to make an appointment although I've heard that doesn't always work with them. But I'll continue going for the style and price. read more

I went to the salon to do crochet braids for the first time. I had a picture of what I thought I wanted. Nicky the stylist installed the hair and we both decided it did not compliment me. I bought new hair and she redid it at NO CHARGE!!! I had to give her a big tip because her service level and compassion was great! I am def going her from now on! read more

I read the previous Yelp review of Nass African Hair Braiding, and decided to give it a try. The store in on Flatbush Ave and Fenimore St, and is very clean and professional looking inside and out. I walked in around 5 p.m. on a weekday with no appointment, and two of Nass' daughters were able to do my senegalese twists right away. Both women were very nice, answered all of my questions, made conversation and were helpful. The process took about 4.5 hours, but very worth the time! I'm extremely pleased with my braids! They feel light on my head (took about 3 or 4 packs of Kanekelon hair) and they weren't tight or pulling my hair line like other braids. The price was reasonable, and the hair can be bought at the store or you bring your own. I've definitely become a fan and plan to go back in a few months. read more

Not sure why other reviews talked about the place being clean. It was completely filthy - the braider was moody, rude and introduced herself to me with dirty looks. After a week, my crochet was falling out of my hair, when I called the salon, her response was - "well, that's what happens with the hair, you know?" - no I don't know - you took my money for hair that lasted an entire week after having to endure a filthy, ghetto hair salon. I was anxiously looking to do my crochet braids before the holidays and they nailed it. They did a wonderful job for the price. No complaints. I got my hair done yesterday and I LOVE IT. They do not braid tight and yet the braids are not loose, I was also able to finish my hair in 2 hours even as I came in late. Jeninne and Nikka are really good, they're very personable and quick learners. They weren't use to knotless crochet braiding but nailed it once I showed them a video. This place was convenient, affordable and worth every star. What sort of upset me was the parking in the area, it took me about 15 min to locate a great parking spot with all the traffic and congestion in the area but then again it is also on Flatbush I can honestly say I will be going back for future services. I showed them a picture of Marley twists. When I left that is not what I got. It was rolled too tight and it looked lifeless. There was no body to my twists. They seem like they know what they are doing with other styles however they can't do Marley twists. I will never go back. read more

Ok sooooooo now that I have been to Nass 3 times now, I guess I have a more accurate ("to date")post to share. I wanted my hair done for an upcoming vacation and since I only frequent the shop from time to time (being a Jersey girl and all) I figured I would call in advance to make sure my stylist would be available. I called two days prior to coming to ask if my girl "Ni-kae" would be in. I was told she would be in at 11am. Two days later, I made the trek into the city early so as not to have an issue with parking. I parked and was outside the shop by 10am...which was fine because its first come first serve so I knew I needed to be first in the chair in order to get outta there before rush hour. Around 10:45, two more customers came and we stood outside chatting. All good, right?...wait for it...at 11:45am (45 minutes after the shop was scheduled to open), a girl in her PAJAMAS came over with the key saying she "saw us standing outside the store from her window and wanted to let us in so we could it down." She said the owner would be in shortly. Then she opened the door and left the three of us sitting there confused...WTF? An HOUR later (and believe me, had I not drive and paid tolls to get there, I woulda been OUTTA THERE)...here comes that SAME girl wearing clothes now instead of pjs asking "who's first"...so I'm like "me...I'm first, but I'm waiting for Ni-Kae...she was supposed to be here at 11." This chic says to me..."oh, Ni-Kae doesn't work here anymore." ...I'm like "wait...WHAT?" She says "oh yes she left a long time ago"...now y'all KNOW I was heated, right?...bottom line-the pajama lady did my hair - it was just okay. My recommendation: don't believe what they tell you when you call and don't expect anything around there to happen within a reasonable amount of time. It's not gonna happen. I am writing this review a day after visiting this salon.* I wanted havana twists, and since they do this style here, why not? I called in advance to ask for the details and prices. I told the woman that I would come in today, but after a change of plans I came in day I called. I politely greeted to two women working there that day; both seemed uninterested. This woman in particular, orangish-honey blond long weave seemed to have an attitude. She was not responsive or helpful in anyway. Anyway, the second woman actually did my crochet braids some time ago. She told me I had a long wait (2 hours), so I decided to leave and come back. When I did come back, 20 minutes ahead of time, I again politely greeted them. I was ignored. I asked, "Am I next?" The 23 inch weave woman heard me loud and clear, but ignored me.m ugh smh After a minute, the other woman told me I was with a smile. I sit down and wait. After about ~30 minutes to an hour, the woman finally finished the person's hair from earlier. After that, she asks another person to come sit down. I ask again, with a smile still, "I'm not next then?" She says, oh, you are after him, his style won't take too long to do." Okay. So I wait another 20-30 minutes. Why tell me to come back in two hours, if you aren't finished yet? Why tell me I'm next WHEN YOU KNOW you have another costumer ahead of me. smfh Now here's the kicker: When I actually sat down to get my hair down,she tells me I don't have enough hair extensions because my hair is too thick. Um..what? Come again? I'll admit, I should have asked her earlier, when I called in advance, how much hair I needed. But she tells me this now?? She suggested I walked up some random blocks and get the hair. Her words: Leave your stuff here and get the hair. I'm not familiar with this location... Um..me thinks. No thank you. At this point, I got up and left. As I walked at, one of the woman had the audacity to suck her teeth. I don't recommend this place to no one. nope. Their time scheduling and work ethic is terrible. You don't make set appointments, so why make me wait a helluva long time, AFTER TELLING ME that I was next? No. You should have told me in advance, how much time it would take to first the other two people first and alert me that I was not next, but was behind another person. Not worth the wait or the money or attitude. Take your business elsewhere. * I went elsewhere to get my hair done. read more

If you are looking for a salon that holds up to professionalism, don't come here. The staff speak more than they pay attention to your hair. I was the only client in the shop and I left their longer than I should have left. Their conversations are a bit too intricate when discussing their sexual life. I'm not interested in hearing that. There were children in the shop as well on a school night! The children with all terror crying and running around did not add to the comfort at the salon. I read some reviews who stated that the salon was neat but I've seen way better. Overall, they can braid well, but they speak way too much and take too much time to complete your style. read more

My first visit to Nass was great. They charged me $100 for crotchet braids. I purchased my own hair. It took longer than I expected (5 hours) but I liked the outcome and my hair lasted longer than 6 weeks. I went to Nass a second time to have my crotchet braids removed and I had kinky twists put in. I showed them a photo of curly ends and they said they could achieve the style. Not only did they mistakenly CUT my hair while taking out the crotchet braids but the kinky twists were horrible. After one week they were slipping and the ends looked terrible. While in the shop I told them that the ends weren't like the photo and the head stylist said "that's not how we do it here." I'm confused - don't you do what the customer is paying you to do. I would never go back to this salon because you never know what you are going to get. read more

Slow and unprofessional. It took over twice as long to install crochet braids that have taken 2.5 hours at other African hair braiders in Brooklyn. They charged me $40 more than they quoted me over the phone. And they don't service on a first come-first served basis; they paused doing my hair to complete the styles of other women who came in AFTER me. This is my first and last time visiting this place, and normally, as an African who has gone to many African hair braiders, I have patience and allegiance to African hair braiding salons. DO NOT GO HERE: (read my last review before reading this one) After reading more of the reviews and seeing everyone say they called for a quote and got their quote, I'm even MORE upset with what happened to me a few weeks prior. Likeee! Y'all I called a second time despite what happened the first time because I really needed my hair done last minute and wanted to give this shop another chance hoping the lady I spoke to the first time was a freak accident on one occasion. Like I said in my last review, I have gone to this braid shop numerous times before (and have never encountered her) when Niki used to work there and even a couple times after she left (I see why she left). I was WRONG. The same devil answered the phone again and proceeded to threaten to call the POLICE on me screaming at the top of her lungs saying I call there every day harassing her????? Mind you I have only spoken to this women once before in my entire life and that was when I called the first time to get a quote. She cursed me out calling me all type of names and once again refused to give me a quote for simple knotless braids. If I could report them to a higher degree than yelp I 100% would. I don't understand why it was so hard for this woman to give me a simple quote being that I was coming from far and needed to know how much cash to bring with me. Why wasn't I treated the same way as every other customer?? I even started to second guess myself thinking, okay maybe you're not supposed to ask for quotes over the phone. BUT NO! Everyone else's reviews has said they called to get their quote before booking so what was this lady's problem with me??? How are you supposed to show up to a shop not knowing how much money to bring with you??? So freaking bizarre. The address of this place has been relocated across the street on flat bush Avenue. Literally like less than 1 minute walk from the address listed. Just wanted to clear that up. Anywhooo I went here to get my hair braided yesterday. I got box braids (and im LOVINGG them). Now I'm a hugee fan of box braids but, however I am not a fan of how tight some africans braid them in. I DO NOT LIKE MY BRAIDS HAIRLINE TIGHT!! I enjoy having a hairline , thank you every much. One thing I like about to this shop is that it is very clean :-) plus plus plus in my book!!!! Actually its what drawn me to this place in the first place. Im a queens chick recently moved to brooklyn looking for a new hairstylist (because I refuse to get my hair done all the way in Harlem like I use too.) And i found my new hair dresser yessss if your lookin for me i will in be here!!! I got my hair done by the owners daughter her name is Djena. She is so gentle i just wanted to hug her ( but i didn't, i should of tho) She is very understanding and she speaks full blown english ( and i heard her speaking french too). Their prices are very reasonable. I got braids down to my waist and i am 5"7. She didnt break my pockets. They also do other hairstyles for a very good price as well. I almost didnt wanna post this review but I did. She also does crochet braids (damn now i know yall gonna be in there :-( ...) I think she only know how to do them tho, not any of her other siblings. Today would make my third time going to this salon. I called the shop the day before to ask how many packs of hair I would need for Senegalese twists. When I arrived the female who normally wears African attire told me I had purchased the wrong hair and not enough of it. She basically refused to use the hair I purchased forcing me to get the particular brand she liked to use. Everything went fine until she pulled out the scissors to trim off stray hairs. I noticed that she was cutting MY hair as well as the fake hair. I kindly stopped her and asked her not to cut MY hair. She then screwed her face up as if offended at what I asked her not to do. When she thought I was not looking she proceeded to cut MY hair yet again. Now...as the customer if I ask you not to do something just don't do it. Utterly annoyed by her response to my request and lack of providing specific information on type/brand of hair to purchase for said style I will not be returning to this hair braiding salon. Well let me start off by saying that Nass, in comparison to some braiding shop you may visit, is clean and well kept. The store wasn't too loud and the workers were nice. I went in to get box braids and the end result was amazing. I loved how my braids came out! and i have received many compliments :) This alone would be worth 5 stars, however... I did mention to the stylist beforehand not to do the braids TOO tight, especially around my edges. My request was obviously disregarded 'cause she (i never did catch her name while i was there) made the braids way too tight, so tight that i started to form bumps around the hairline and by the nape of my neck. My head was sore for a few day from how tight they were. And the installation took all day as well. Came in at around 10-11ish, didn't leave till around 8-8:30 Soooo -2 stars :-/ Its now been a month and my braids still look good. Although i was pleased with the way my hair came out, i think i'd rather spend time searching around and find somewhere else to go read more
