I am not sure why the bad reviews. This place was very nice. The staff was super friendly and they really try their best to really make sure your stay is great. I agree the rooms need a little remodeling but I got a great deal on the room anyways. The room had 4 pillows per bed and everything was nice and clean. I did not hear a peep from my neighbors considering how packed the place was. It was a nice much needed relaxed night. The pool and hot tub were a plus and well maintained. Okay, maybe the 5-star spa at Pinehurst golf resort forever ruined spas for me; I really tried to lower my expectations with that in mind, but this place really could do a lot better. We walked in at 11, yes our treatments were scheduled at 11, but cut us slack, we were coming from 1.5 hours away! The lady doing my massage immediately rushed us along, and called me by the wrong name. The massage was good, but having massages now I appreciate the little things, like being gentle with placing arms/legs/blankets down on the table, not just flopping them down. I don't like how the spa area upstairs is locked. If you have a treatment you should be able to have access to that area all day. I don't like how you share the pool with hotel people and random people using the gym, there was a really creepy guy doing some strange water exercises for like an hour, and TONS of little kids... Everywhere... Splashing, diving in the pool, screaming, and using the hot tub (a no-no). Not exactly the most relaxing environment. The salt pool was not particularly salty. I especially don't like how I tried to have lunch delivered and could not charge the meal to my bill, but rather had to go into the locker room and call from my cell phone (that I'm not supposed to use in the spa) to order, then proceed to give my credit card number over the phone, in the locker room with other people around to pay. They did deliver lunch to us where we asked, and it was really good! (Cobb salad) Finally, there were ants EVERYWHERE. Gross. I can't speak for the hotel (since I just did the spa), but I doubt I would do this again. read more

Tori gave me the best massage ever! I asked for deep tissue and she did not disappoint. She did a few pressure point releases and I feel like my shoulders have unhunched for the first time in weeks. Tori also gave me a few pointers about how not to tense up so badly in the future, I feel like a whole new person. The place is good, with some exceptions. The spa pool exercise part closes at 9pm. Not great for people that check in late. The restaurant is good. Food is good. Service is good. Room service is nice to have. It would be awesome if they just left the pool etc open later I think I would love it! Oh, and the Sunday brunch is great, but pricey. read more

I have been to the Spa many times and am well aware of its quirks and pluses. First, it's a lovely site - the problem is that it's not being maintained and that lack of effort is becoming very apparent - years old sofas with cheap slipcovers being one example. However, it's the only place with decently qualified staff in the area, so, I still go. Another example of the lack of management was my visit there last week, enjoying a very nice ( yet overpriced ) pedicure and reading the.... 2011 magazine I picked up in the waiting room. Read the reviews below to hear similar experiences to mine--and believe them. Those who give it a five star rating must be happy with prison conditions. The infrastructure is worn out, tattered, and dirty. Like others, my room was 70s decor and never maintained since then. Broken shades, filthy bathroom with toilet paper in toilet when I arrived. Filthy upholstered furniture; I put a towel on one piece to lay out my clothing. Room had old musty odor. Noisy hallway with staff hauling things in and out at 4:00 am. Perhaps this place was the happening hotel 3 decades ago, but it should be subjected to the wrecking ball now. I am a business traveler and will "discuss" this with my assistant upon return to the office--why she would make this reservation. A great example of the value of Yelp--with the string of negative reviews posted a person with any sense of dignity wouldn't get within 50 yards of this horrendous place. Actually, a local recommended it--I won't hold it against this person in few days. Other reviews mention locals recommending this place--not sure what to make of Maine standards...Never went to the spa--heck, I didn't want to use the pillow on the bed! Sit in a hot tub and risk disease? I need a shower after leaving this place. I'll stop now; hope I've communicated a firm recommendation. Our experience here was stellar--we booked a standard king room. Our room was clean, not dingy at all, the bathroom and shower were excellent. I liked that we could enter from the hallway after a delicious meal at the restaurant, or from our vehicle outside. The spa/gym/pool was another great feature. The gym was exceptional and big--and they gave classes! Everyone at the front desk was helpful and friendly--especially Sara. We'll be back! read more

Where oh where did The Senator go? This used to be the premiere hotel in the area with upstanding food, spa and luxurious rooms. You will no longer find those amenities there. This hotel would be a field day for HGTV! It has wonderful bones, a great location and huge potential but it's evident that it's gone way down hill. The food is decent but that's where it ends. The rooms are dated, peeling, dark, with hard as rock beds. It needs new carpeting and paint and wallpaper removal to get rid of the smells. Cleanliness is not nearly as up to par as it used to be and the place is deteriorating. Senator, if you want repeated customers and locals to dine there you MUST do an overhaul now! You have the potential to be the premiere go to spot again but remodeling and updating is a must! read more

New management has really taken its toll on maintenance and staff morale. It's now just a step up from Motel 6 and not as good as a Hampton or Courtyard. The restaurant is still one of the best in town, but that's pretty low praise as Augusta restaurants are overall pretty bad. read more

This hotel/spa was lovely - 2 swimming pools and a hot tub , a full gym and a full offering of spa services- I stayed at the hotel itself which was clean - neat- nicely decorated, huge room, awesome big bath tub and a shower with a temperature control on it so you could set the water for the temp you like best NICE!. The outdoor pool was heated and comfortable -also open late enough for a night swim. The spa pool was salt water and the hot tub was very hot - awesome! I sent my son to the salon for a haircut --well done and reasonably priced - he came back looking sharp - better than many NYC haircuts - I'm surprised that his wonderful place has so few reviews-- read more

For the $$ you do have several amenities in this property: bar, restaurant, pool, spa and a decent gym. All looks fine. Food is good, had some very good cocktails in bar. Staff is friendly and efficient. What was not great was the rooms, doesn't look like they have given any TLC or upgrades in years. Our beds were so soft mine even went down in the middle. The pillows are horrendous. There are several on the bed from high to medium high they are so old or cheap (not sure which) that you feel every chunk of the filling. Our bathroom had no shelf so we had to put our comb/brush on the toilet and take towels off the shelf to use for toiletries etc. Looks dingy in rooms which gives you the feeling that they are not clean. To sum it up mixed feelings on this place, definitely needs work in rooms. Bottom line if you want a good nights sleep on a comfortable bed this is not the place for you. read more

Had Thanksgiving here last week. The buffet was huge and our server was pretty attentive for it being a serve yourself atmosphere. Our waters were re-filled before you could drink the whole thing. I have two complaints though 1- We were a large party of 12 and got sat at two round tables next to each other. Kind of sucks when you want to be with your family during the holiday and you have to awkwardly yell at the other table. 2- all of the hot food items were cold. read more

I spent $127 on a manicure and pedicure and it started peeling in 3 days. The price included an 18% gratuity that was automatically charged. I have a big presentation next week and I need my nails redone. When I called, they said I would have to talk with the manager. When I asked for her, they said she would not be back until Monday. (This is Saturday morning.) I explained how important it is to get my nails redone and they said they could not possibly fit me in and they could not do anything until I talked with the manager. I left voicemail for the manager, but I still need my nails done. I found another place where I can get my nails redone so I called Senator Inn again and asked for a refund. They said they could not do that until I talked with the manager. This salon was recommended by several people in my family who had their manis and pedis done by THE ONE good beautician. Obviously, I got the other one. I would never recommend this spa because you will be overcharged, you will pay 18% to someone who may or may not do a good job and the results will be inconsistent. read more

We did not have a comfortable stay here. The room was small (whatever) but the worst part was the smell. There was a very strong odor and I don't even know how to describe it, expect maybe a nursing home. We decided that if we had been in another country, we would have probably been satisfied (other than the odor) with the bed, bathroom, tv, refrigerator, microwave, etc. The breakfast was okay. It used to something back in the day about 10 years ago but now it is very dated and needs to overhauled. They have done some work some of the rooms but for the most part, the beds, decor and rooms are dated. On the positive side they have a SPA, Pool and work out area. It is called a gym but has the very basics as most Hotel gyms have. The price point has down over the years and you can find Expedia deals around 99 per night. There are newer nicer hotel options in Augusta but if you like the old school feel or have sentimental memories of the Old Senator, well this is the place for you! read more

Cute hotel. We got the spa king room and it was very roomy. It had a jacuzzi tub which was great. The beds were firm too much for me but hubby loved it. Huge flat screen tv and a fireplace. Only complaint was you couldn't just flip through the channels you had to actually type in a number which is hard when you are not from the area and don't know the channels. It also wasn't high def which isn't that big of a deal. It includes a free breakfast. I would definitely stay there again. It was very clean and the staff was very friendly. read more

Absolutely a shit hole. Out dated rooms stains on all the upholstery and tables. The bed spread when I entered the room was filthy. The restaurant changed their hours without notice. The food is expensive and probably poor quality that I don't know I didn't have the opportunity to be disappointed because it was closed. The parking lot has damaged tar everywhere. The best stay we had in our trip to east cost. Very cozy room with nicely decorated. Convenient & comfortable room,bed, toilet everything was just pleasant and perfect. The awesome breakfast I ever had in a hotel. (Even when we stayed in Marriott they didn't gave us complementary breakfast ,surprising ) Variety of bread,muffin,bagels,waffles,scrambled egg,fresh fruits,vanilla & strawberry flavored yogurt,sausage ,juices,coffee & tea. I am not sure whether I included everything.they arranged with the restaurant people to serve us breakfast it's highly professional and good. Great food,great stay, great service.unfortunately we couldn't use the spa but it looked so much fun place. We saw lot of families enjoying. Highly recommending, super comfortable relaxing place. This place is a rip off. We were falsely accused of smoking in the hotel hallway by an employee, they tried to charge a smoking fee when neither I or the other adult smoke, nor would to two children we had with us. We were called to the front desk where the clerk said our card wasn't working, takes our card and shoves a bill for smoking on us. When we confronted her about it she proceeded to tell us she spoke with a gentleman outside our door about smoking. The other adult asked if it was me and she said she didn't know and couldn't identify or give a description of the gentleman. She told us we need to leave the premises or the cops would be called. We called the police ourselves and the officer completely backed us but couldn't do anything about it because the manager had asked us to leave. Video footage was requested, they wouldn't let us view it with the officer and smoking fee was waved. The room was still charged, we had to pack up two kids and leave at 8 o'clock at night 4 hours from home. If you like terrible customer service that will literally send you packing for something you haven't done, then this is the place for you. Musty, dirty, cramped, over priced hotel. The Senator is an old place that is very quirky. Some rooms are nice, some not at all. The spa has a very beautiful pool, and the restaurant serves great food, but that's the best the Senator has to offer. I was there last weekend at an event in one of the meeting rooms and walked around the place with friends and had a drink later in the bar. Depending on your priorities, this is either a four or a one... What pulls me upwards was my stellar experience at the Fitness Center. As others have mentioned the classes and facilities are free for guests. I decided it was a great opportunity to try a Boot Camp class where no one knew me. The instructor was SO welcoming, telling me how delighted he was when hotel guests came down and then spent extra time with me after class showing me how to use various pieces of equipment to fight IT band syndrome (I'm a runner). He also made sure to show alternative exercises for beginners even though everyone else there was clearly a regular. But I also want to give this inn just one star because I've slept on more comfortable beds in Super 8s, and the room was as drab as you have read. I come to Augusta annually and honestly can't decide if I will return to this hotel. read more

DO NOT STAY IN THE GOVENORS WING!! There is a reason why they don's show pictures of this wing on the website. The hotel has a few different sections and some of them are updated, but the Govenors wing is a separate grouping of about a dozen rooms that is not attached to the main building and is stuck in a time warp from the 1970s. Dirty carpet, rusty front door, dirty entryway and parking lot and a dated, small bathroom with broken fixtures (our shower shot water on the ceiling instead of into the tub area). The room had an unpleasant odor that was worse when the air conditioning was actually blowing air- mostly the air conditioner did not work. I have stayed here many times over the past 10 years, and it appears to be going down hill and is not being kept up. I can not believe I was charged $179 for this yucky room. read more

Been coming here for 15 years when we have to go to the Capital, but not anymore. 15 years ago it was showing it's age, but because it was kept clean, it was the nicest hotel in Augusta and the surrounding area. It has deteriorated terrible and is quite gross. DON'T be fooled by any pics that look nice - they're either old, touched up or the yuk just doesn't show up in that pic. We changed our room twice during our last stay because it was so nasty and was hoping it was just a bad room - but 3 in a row? A brand new motel 6 is cleaner. There is really gross stuff on bedskirts, spreads, drapes, carpets etc. The grout is super gross. Mattresses are very uncomfortable. We felt like we were going to catch something. Oh ya...and we always stay in the expensive "Spa Suites", so I can't imagine what the normal/less expensive rooms look like. Seriously - go somewhere, anywhere else. It is so unbelievably nasty. read more

We stayed in the "best" suite the hotel offered for two nights for our honeymoon. The website claims that the Spa Suite Luxury Rooms are "2-room suites offering our top-of the line lodging experience for those wanting luxury and relaxation." Instead it was cramped, musty smelling, and it actually lacked some of the amenities offered to other guests. Maybe I'm naive, but when I am paying 2 - 3 times more per night to stay at the hotel in their supposed "top-of the line" room I don't expect to find that every room but ours in that wing has a private outdoor patio or that our room is crammed into an awkward corner overlooking the dumpsters. The bed was rickety and it felt like the wood was coming apart and we also did not get the complimentary newspaper the website boasted. Overall the room was very disappointing. Further more the staff was rude! I was shocked at how rude nearly everyone at the hotel was to us. Call me crazy but when I'm a guest at a hotel I expect to be treated nicely by the staff especially at an "Inn" touting itself as a luxury spa. For both check in and check out the front service guy was rude (2 different people). The restaurant staff was rude to us at breakfast and lunch and only the woman who brought us room service was nice from the restaurant attached to the inn. Additionally 2 out of 3 different receptionists for the spa were rude to us as well. The room comes with spa access meaning that, even if we chose not to buy other spa services, we were granted access to the pools and lockers attached to the spa as well as complimentary spa robes and slippers to use for the day. However 2 of the receptionist actually tried to deny giving the spa robes to us -- even though we had bought massages! One spa receptionist was particularly obnoxious. Each time I would walk by the desk (such as to go lounge by the outdoor pool) he would try to stop me and ask if I had taken everything out of the locker and was ready to return the robes. Um, no. Since I"m still in the robe, and I have access to the spa from 5am - 9pm -- why are you harassing me at 2pm to return the items when I'm staying in the hotel anyway? It felt like he was worried my husband and I would be trying to steal their relatively ragged spa robes which was really insulting considering the $$$ we were spending on the hotel and spa services. When I turned my robes in at 6pm he actually had the audacity to say "so you are finally turning in your robe and key!" I will say that the masseuses were very polite and that the massages there are very affordable. If you aren't looking for the "spa" experience but want to get a nice massage I can definitely recommend getting worked on there. Sadly their talent is housed at a terrible hotel. read more

I couldn't give The Senator a better rating due to the following issues: The room was very small and had an ancient air conditioning unit that was pumping cigarette smoke scented air into the room in the morning from what appeared to be the designated smoking area just outside our window. The queen bed wasn't very comfortable and we were only provided 4 small pillows. The pool and jacuzzi closed at 9PM, which was very disappointing. The free continental breakfast was adequate, but the 9:30 AM deadline was a little annoying. The staff was friendly enough, the bartender was pleasant and the drinks were well-made and not overpriced. In the future I would just stay at the local Quality Inn for the same rate, and avoid the stench. read more

I arrived at 12:00 midnight after a whirlwind trip that took me from DC to Chicago to Augusta; got to the front desk and the male receptionist was chatting with someone in a lobby devoid of people save those two; no one made eye contact or asked to help me as I stood there waiting patiently for their conversation to end. Belatedly he acknowledged me and checked me in, handed me a room key card (i was exhausted and didn't note that he didn't slip it in a key card holder with a room number on it. I walked through a convoluted trail of hotel hallways to get to the room and about halfway I realized he didn't tell me the room number nor write it on the key, so I walked all the way back and patiently asked what the room number was (realizing he may have told me and I forgot). He then told me and wrote it down and I walked my way back to the room. I put the key in the door, pushed it open and was shocked to walk in on an elderly lady in a nightie, who was probably more shocked than I that a stranger had the key to her room and waltzed right in. She screamed, I apologized and closed the door and walked ALL the way back to the front desk, this time as livid as I've ever been. The lady should have been even more upset, but that's her problem. All the guy could say was "sorry", reissued my key and I walked ALL the way back to MY room (which was next door). Serious privacy concern here. The hotel was VERY musty; the carpet stunk and the room furniture was old. The bathroom was the size of a bathroom in a new york city hotel, and here we were in Maine. My wife, who arrived earlier in the evening than I did ate at the restaurant and by the time I got to the room was laying there with serious gastrointestinal distress. This hotel was a disaster. I don't know what crappy wing of the hotel they put us in as opposed to the first reviewer but if I haven't convinced you not to stay here be sure to ask for the "not crappy" wing. read more

Stayed here during the blizzard this week. Charming hotel. Very clean. The best guest service I have ever received in a hotel. Every staff member was pleasant and attentive that I came across throughout the entire hotel. Kim at the front desk was very efficient, friendly & professional. Great lap pool, sauna, hot tub, and massage services. Four different people recommended the restaurant although I didn't partake on this trip I will for sure during my next stay. Continental breakfast was hot & tasty. Good variety and fresh. I checked in hours earlier than policy and was not an issue at all- very welcomed in messy weather. Only negative thing to say is that the bed is hard and not very comfortable and it is a little strange that the mini fridge in the room is located in the bathroom but part of the uniqueness. I paid a great rate and is similar to costs at other hotel/motels in area that don't have any amenities/ lack great guest service and are not half as clean as the Senator is. Also, the next morning the crew plowing and snow blowing came over and snowblowed out my car so I could drive out. Even the independent contractors at the Senator go out of their way for a guest! Amazing! I WILL stay here again for sure. read more

I am going to take my time writing this review, because I do not want my bias toward big cities to be too obvious here... The Senator Inn is the kind of place that makes the locals mouths open is awe when you tell them that is where you are staying - whether this is a good or bar reaction is up to you to decide. When I first stayed here, it was still affiliated with Best Western, which meant I got points. The following week, they dropped their affiliation stating that they felt it was no longer needed to attract customers. Unless you decide to pay for the more elaborate rooms, you will walk into a small, outdated, but clean room. The maid service is good, but I did have to leave a note requesting more coffee/tea bags because I stayed there for 4+ days. Depending on where your room is, you may have direct access to the parking lot - which is excellent. I am a little antisocial and don't feel like talking to anyone after being at work for over 10 hours. The gym is tiny, but the pool is incredible. The spa services are overpriced, as is the restaurant (see my review on Cloud 9). Overall, this place is not nearly as great as the locals make it out to be. Next time I'm in a hotel, it will be the Holiday Inn or the Marriott where I will at least get some points. read more

I had the pleasure of receiving a gift certificate to the Senator Inn Spa over the holidays and could not be happier with the service I received. I spent roughly five hours at the spa on the Thursday before Christmas with my mother and boyfriend's mother (who is a local and goes here frequently). What a treat! So much fun! My esthetician, November, was AMAZING. And I hear the other ladies are just as good. The anti-stress facial was wonderful. I have had many facials in major cities like New York, San Francisco and Boston, and these folks are top notch. It's also nice to have access to the great features of the day spa like the saltwater pool and both dry and wet steam rooms. The facilities are spotless, too. The only complaint I have is that the manicures/pedicures are incredibly overpriced. They do a nice job and you even get to keep the mini bottle of polish they use. But it's formaldehyde-free and chips off within 24 hours. French tips are not worth it. The best part of the Senator Inn Day Spa was the lunch that came with our spa packages from Cloud 9. Delish! If you're in the Augusta, Maine, area, I highly recommend you book a treat for yourself at this spot. read more

I spent two nights at the hotel and was assaulted while there. I have stayed at the hotel in the past and never had a problem before however, after I was assaulted and called the police the hotel staff was particularly unhelpful . The following day after the suspect was arrested I asked to speak with the General Manager. To this day no one from the hotel has returned any of my calls.
