I wish I had found Senju Salon years ago. Masa and his wife run the salon, and from the moment you walk in, you can tell they genuinely care about their clients. Masa is incredibly kind and polite. He isn't the kind of hairstylist who chats nonstop, but he's thoughtful, professional, and clearly takes pride in his work. Meanwhile, his wife was chatting with another client nearby, and the two of them were laughing together the whole time. It made the salon feel warm, relaxed, and genuinely welcoming. The first time I went, he asked if I had a photo of the haircut I wanted. I didn't. I know there are Japanese hairstyle websites out there, but as someone who isn't Japanese, I had no idea where to find the kind of reference photo he was talking about. Even so, he gave me a great haircut. The second visit was what really won me over. This time I described what I wanted instead of showing a photo, and Masa made it happen. Throughout the haircut, he checked in with me about the length of my bangs, how much layering I wanted, what he thought would suit my hair, and how much length we could comfortably remove from the back. I have chin-length, extremely straight hair, which is super low-maintenance but completely unforgiving of mistakes. If one side is even a little longer than the other, everyone can tell. Masa nailed it. I got so many compliments afterward. One friend even joked, "At least it's even this time!" which says a lot after my previous haircut elsewhere somehow ended up with one side noticeably longer than the other, and not in an intentional way. Yes, Senju Salon costs more than some places, but I've learned that paying less isn't a bargain if you spend the next two months looking in the mirror wishing your hair looked different. When I can, I'd rather pay a little more for a haircut that makes me happy every single day. I'll be recommending Senju Salon to anyone who asks. Finding a hairstylist you trust is surprisingly hard. I'm just glad I finally found mine. read more

Got my first hair color and cut by Asuka a month ago. Asuka is talented and really listens to the style that I'm trying to achieve. My hair color still looks amazing after a month. The cut is also very nice, easy to blow dry, style & curl (volume with movement). Asuka also goes over how to style & how to curl at the end of the appointment with me. Senju Salon also has another Japanese hair stylist, Masa, heard from friends he is also a very good hair stylist. You will not be disappointed by Asuka, she's on trend! She is also very honest with her pricing. Plenty of parking lot-spaces and the decor of Senju Salon is modern, super clean and simple - Minimalist design. read more

Hands down best haircut I have gotten in the US. The only other time my hair looked this good is when I got a haircut in Tokyo. Masa was so kind and gentle. He took the time to understand what I wanted. I got hair treatment as well and that was a delight. He is a virtuoso in his job. I have trust issues when it come to my haircuts. For ~10 years I got my hair cut by the same woman but then she moved back to Japan so I had to find somewhere else to go. Over the years, the two times I had to get a last-minute haircut from someone else, the results was really disappointing. White people apparently haven't figured out how to cut thick Asian hair, which is understandable if you're not used to it. Anyway, I am so happy that I was put in touch with Masa. He has done an amazing job for me for the past year. He's so concentrated when he's working yet still so welcoming and attentive. I will not go to anyone else for the foreseeable future. read more

Masa did such a great job working on my hard, thick hair. I received a hair cut and Japanese straightening perm with a curl iron. They really care about customer's daily hair care. They cut and style in a way that it's so easy to maintain at home. Also the price is affordable compared to other salon so I could visit more frequently to maintain my style :) This is a one-on-one salon and they keep the space very clean and neat so I felt safe to visit during the pandemic time. I've had a haircut and 2 hair coloring experiences with Asuka at Senju Salon. Extremely happy with everything she has done to my hair. She picked out the base color and highlight color for me that it will not be obvious when my roots with gray hair grows out. And it's just slighter lighter than my natural color, so I do look younger, if I can say so myself :). I have gotten many compliments on the cut and the color. And she gives a super nice head and shoulder massage...I fell asleep. The new salon is in this one-client-at-a-time pod with a door. Very private, quiet and COVID-safe. The pod is just big enough that you don't feel so closed in. Plenty of free parking in front of the building and on the street. She has very reasonable prices, especially among the Japanese salons in Newton/Brookline area. read more

Masa is a wonderful stylist! Every haircut I've gotten has been great, and lasts for a very long time. He is very thoughtful and easy to talk to. The salon space is very clean and comfortable. Since it's an one-person salon, it's nice that you're the only customer there. There are a few parking spots in front and on the side of the building. Highly recommended! read more

Asuka is super nice and knowledgeable. She tell you the truth about your hair condition and what type of treatment is good for you. During my 15 mins free consultation, she told me honestly that she does not have equipment for "digital perm" and I should go to other salon for it if I want the same perm/style I got in TW. She recommended something else for me and I just got it done yesterday. Great experience with her and reasonable price.
