Honestly, the whole appointment was really confusing for me. I'm not sure if it just depends on the technician, but I didn't get that "free quote/estimate" as advertised on Gil's website. I felt like there was a lot of upselling initially, such as pressure to get entirely new cables, rollers, and springs when my initial concern was the gap between the door and floor (potential rodent entry). When I questioned if this was really necessary and that I wasn't interested in pursuing any of those services same day, the technician made comments such as "when it breaks let me know" which was unsettling. Later he did say that I could reuse the rollers and cables I already had to save money which changed the tone of things. He also kept asking personal questions which was uncomfortable. At the end of the appointment, I was slapped with a $721 bill - for what??? Note, if you want to avoid the 3% charge, they recommend paying via Zelle or Venmo (they did refund me the $21 (3%)) since I paid via Zelle. Initially the technician just asked me to Zelle/Venmo him (I didn't even know the amount yet!), but I refused without seeing some kind of invoice first which I did receive in the customer portal minutes later and did pay. Anyways, after the technician had left, I called back to ask for clarification on the services with the price breakdown (learned that it was $175 each for panel repair, motor limit adjustment, springs retention, door rebalanced). I contacted the company again to seek clarification on the services such as whether or not there's standard pricing or if written contracts are typically utilized. I wish there was more explanation on the services. I guess the technician/company could tell I was confused about the situation and at least offered to rectify the situation a few days later which they did. They wanted to emphasize customer satisfaction which I do appreciate. I think the overall experience would've been much more pleasant if everything was in writing and there was actually a (no-pressure) free estimate as advertised. Overall, I don't think Gil's Garage Door & Gate Services has any ill intent and they do value customer satisfaction. Maybe it just depends on the technician. Also recommend buddying up with someone during the appointment to avoid being asked personal questions or reduce possible upselling. Other than that, Gil's work quality seems fine and they are very quick.

I called on March 21 and requested a new garage door. On March 25 Josh Keen arrived and managed to tell me his whole life story while preparing the estimate. He did not see or ask me if I wanted a key pad. I was told that Keen had my garage door in stock at one of their neighboring businesses and that once the door was sent to Santa Rosa they would be in touch. On April 22, Derek arrived and installed the garage door but it was not the one that I had ordered and set aside for me. I ordered a garage door with windows and Keen installed one without windows. Another round of appointments were made and a worker came and dropped off the window panel for the upper part of the garage door. A few hours later another worker came and installed the panel and took the solid panel with him. He said another worker would be coming that same day with the key pad. I questioned if he had the right one and was assured he did. Of course he had 2 key pads on the truck but neither were compatible with my door!! You would think that at this point Keen Garage doors would expedite the case to simply install a key pad. But no!! They place me in the appointment queue and offer a complimentary one year membership to have my door serviced. What a joke. Who has time to set up appointments and deal with incompetent office people and workers. Finally on May 6 the key pad was installed. I recently moved into a new house, and for storage purposes I needed to replace the very dated ceiling mounted garage door opener with a wall-mounted opener. After spending a weekend installing it myself, it would not open the garage door. So I called Jonathan, he was out the next day, and he quickly diagnosed that the springs and door rollers were beyond their useful life. He quoted me a very fair price for replacing the springs with new, heavy duty springs and new rollers, and the work was completed beautifully within a few days. Jonathan does!!! 1) I had already been through this process with another company so I understood the grade of springs and realized that the ones that Jonathan installed were two grades higher yet the price he charged me was less than they did as was the service not to mention the fact that I had to make an appointment two weeks in advance with these guys and Jonathan skipped in and out for me. 2) Jonathan didn't try to upsell me at all I actually asked him about replacing the opener and two bent pieces of track. He fixed the bent pieces of track and told me that my opener would probably be good for another 20 years so he didn't try to upsell me anything. He wouldn't even let me pay for his In-N-Out Burger. 3) I really enjoy supporting family owned businesses and the fact that he had his son with him and that he was showing him the ropes just resonates with me. I was informed of a price around $200-300 for single or both springs, plus labor (which many places would not provide unless I had them come out first). It seems like the price could vary depending on the garage door style, size, and weight. Also, another place had quoted me $485 right off the bat therefore this was the best option so far. They let me know that the technician would have all the necessary parts and tools for whatever option I go with (very convenient). Technician Sam called me to notify he was on the way and when he arrived outside. Upon arrival, he inspected our garage and said it would be more than quoted since I had a heavy door (~$400-500). He provided us with two different priced options, differing in expected lifespan and labor (~$100) warranties. The job was estimated to take around 30 mins, depending on if there was complications with the existing parts. Sam was very professional and knowledgeable with all the mechanics and components. He let us know more about what we had installed and what could potentially fail or cause us issues in the future. He also gave us recommendations on how to properly maintain the garage door to prolong it's functionality and life. After we made our choice, he began working right away. During this time, he came to get our attention and let us know that the bearings needed to be replaced soon and we just asked him to do them since it was already disassembled and the labor cost was flat rate. It all ended up taking closer to an hour, and despite the higher than anticipated expense... we felt very assured and satisfied with the outcome we received.
