Realized one afternoon that our garage torsion spring was broken on one side. I reached out to a few businesses to get a quote and immediately I get a response from SGD within minutes. I was informed of a price around $200-300 for single or both springs, plus labor (which many places would not provide unless I had them come out first). It seems like the price could vary depending on the garage door style, size, and weight. Also, another place had quoted me $485 right off the bat therefore this was the best option so far. They let me know that the technician would have all the necessary parts and tools for whatever option I go with (very convenient). Technician Sam called me to notify he was on the way and when he arrived outside. Upon arrival, he inspected our garage and said it would be more than quoted since I had a heavy door (~$400-500). He provided us with two different priced options, differing in expected lifespan and labor (~$100) warranties. The job was estimated to take around 30 mins, depending on if there was complications with the existing parts. Sam was very professional and knowledgeable with all the mechanics and components. He let us know more about what we had installed and what could potentially fail or cause us issues in the future. He also gave us recommendations on how to properly maintain the garage door to prolong it's functionality and life. After we made our choice, he began working right away. During this time, he came to get our attention and let us know that the bearings needed to be replaced soon and we just asked him to do them since it was already disassembled and the labor cost was flat rate. It all ended up taking closer to an hour, and despite the higher than anticipated expense... we felt very assured and satisfied with the outcome we received. Long, long overdue updated review (previous review was from a tenant that quickly wrote it after being requested to when the job was done): Absolutely atrocious installation, and very, very unprofessional. The garage door installed was not the one that was negotiated during our call, which had a few other additions to it. The installer even FORGOT TO BRING one with a MAIL SLOT!! Unbelievable!! After realizing a garage door does indeed need a mail slot, he said "Oh, well, don't worry, this one is on the house, it's on me man!" like it was some kind of favor or nice thing to do, then expressed "I have to go all the way to Home Depot to get it, but since I'm a nice guy I'll do this for you this one time." I couldn't believe what I was hearing, he seriously thought it wasn't his fault. He then proceeded to install the most ghetto mail slot, it wasn't even straight or aligned correctly, not stainless steel, and when inserting your hand through the top part of the metal that he cut snags the top of your hand and can cut you. The metal part he cut even covers at least 1/3 of the insert hole! He also did not install the new chain that came with the garage door opener and kept saying it's not needed and is an "extra job" to do. Anything that was said that wasn't satisfactory he kept saying "it's fine, it's fine, don't worry about it" and "you don't have to care so much about it, why do you care about these things? I think it's fine and nobody can see it anyway," while there were some dents on the "new" garage door after he installed it when it was pointed out. Even when asked "if you installed it like this at your place, would you be fine with it?" He replied, "I don't really think it's a big deal." So unprofessional. He also tried to upsell me on railings and wheels, and other things I didn't need. Furthermore, when he was contacted about everything, he told my tenant "I'm not the main installer guy, the other guys that work at this company are way better and they can install them 100% correctly, but since they weren't available I had to go out and do it." I can't believe this kind logic and all these excuses, and still expected to be paid fully like nothing was wrong or weird. Very dishonest company and will try to use any excuse to half-ass their job or laziness, as well as using ways and saying things in a way to make the customer "feel bad" or "uncomfortable" to not speak up to them or mention something off. Ever since then, the garage does not properly close, having to get out and hold down the button from the inside since the sensors think there is something in the way or wrong with the rail alignment, the door is super loud, even making a really big "bang" sound each time it goes opens and closes. The garage door hasn't been able to close normally for quite a long, long time now, by garage door remote or normal wall button, often times having to manually close it by hand as well! Also reading other reviews, I was also told that there was tax and was charged for it when maintenance and service labor isn't taxable. Stay away from this company, please! Work starts and then... oh, now you also need these other things too. Started at $475 estimate, ended up at with an $1100 invoice. Technician friendly, and perhaps well skilled at sales too. Quoted $145. $35 coupon on Yelp. Addy comes out and says $189 for good cables; $145 for bad ones and coupon doesn't apply. And then proceeds to tell me that I need to replace the whole door and the rollers because it was all bad. He shows me that the last person who replaced the cables, which were admittedly done poorly, put a piece on backwards. I ask him why would you put the cable back on if it the piece needs to be reversed? He says I'll change it but it'll cost you $35. It takes him three minutes. He then says I'm done and I see Slack in one of the cables. I ask him about it and he says it's fine so I send it to the dispatcher who tells him to tighten the cable. read more

A roller broke on our 16-ft garage door causing the opener to get stuck. While we managed to change the roller and reset the opener, the opener started making a loud noise, so we called Safety Garage Door. Khaled showed up within the time frame and wasted no time. Our garage door is 60 years old and the axle and rails probably are original. But Khaled didn't try to tell me that everything needed replacing. He pointed out the problem parts, such as the spring that was overwound (causing the opener to work hard to close the door). He also pointed out some indentations in the axle, remarking that it would be best to replace it but it would not be unsafe to leave it for now. The rollers were old and covered in dirty, caked-on black grease. He gave maintenance tips, dissuading from WD40, pointing out the parts needing 3-in-1oil. He also threw in labor for swapping out bearings for the axle. When the drums and cables are ready to replace, I plan on calling these guys, and will probably have them install a new axle. read more

Our previous garage door's torsion spring snapped one day and we decided we might as well replace it since it was pretty old and tended to let all the cold air in. After talking to a few companies, we received a very reasonable quote from Ammar for a Wayne Dalton garage door and decided to go for it. He was courteous and straightforward and patiently answered all of my many questions since I knew very little about garage doors and wanted to figure out the best options - e.g. does this garage have sufficient R value and U values for these crazy cold SF summers!? What's the diff between Wayne Dalton vs Clopay vs Amarr?? Does it come with a Torquemaster?? (the answer to the last one is no) We narrowed it down and got the new door installed within a few days without a hitch. We did happen to a have a strange malfunction recently (not their fault) but when I called Ammar, he assured me that someone would be coming within an hour or two. This response from Ammar is a lie. My review was never about pricing -- it was about the unprofessional and aggressive behavior that followed. After I posted my honest experience, the technician showed up at my house unannounced, and both he and Ammar called me demanding I remove my review. During one of those calls, Ammar used profanity toward me ("cheap s**t"). For Ammar to claim he "never gets upset with customers" is completely false. I'm fine with the service itself - the lubrication of all components and the adjustments to make the door close properly. He left oily spots on the laminate and simply told me to "be careful". What I'm totally not okay with is that when it came time to pay, the technician said, "It's a $75 maintenance fee plus taxes ($7 for some reason)." Maintenance and service labor in California are not taxable. The only part of a service that can be taxed is the sale of actual parts (which haven't happened in my case). I find it hard to believe that someone who has been in this business for a while wouldn't know such basic rules. It seems like people in the Bay Area just quietly pay whatever they're told, and it's a shame that no one knows their rights or they're simply afraid of making someone feel "uncomfortable". Update: After I posted my review, I received a flood of calls and messages, and Khaled personally reached out with sincere apologies and offered a full refund for the job - which I declined. The explanation given was that they didn't realize labor isn't taxable (insert shrug emoji here). Do I believe that someone who's been in business this long wouldn't know that? Honestly, no. Still, I'm changing my rating from 'Could've been better' to 'OK.' But after reading other reviews, I can't help wondering: how many people end up deleting their reviews after being offered a chargeback? To the owners of Safety Garage Door: please stop chasing customers over negative Yelp reviews. Later, Eli called to confirm the appointment and asked about was the issue, which was odd since I had already provided photos and details. It seemed the office and technicians weren't in sync. When the tech arrived, he said I needed a larger spring: $550 for two (15k cycles) or $600 (30k cycles). The price jumped from $200 to $550 on the spot. Since I needed it fixed, I went with the 15k option. About 10 minutes later, he pointed out a small bearing issue and recommended replacing both sides for $240 total. I declined, since the initial price had already changed. The work took about 20 minutes. I had to remind him more than once about the Yelp discount. The job got done, but I felt pressured and misled by the sudden price increase. I later noticed grease marks on my walls that I had to clean and repaint. I gave them feedback to be upfront that quotes may change and don't include tax.
