I don't understand why the reviews for this place are so low. I always got along well with the store owner. The groceries here are pretty fresh, and they even offer a private parking lot which none of the other Asian groceries in Oakland have. It certainly isn't as big as some of the groceries in the Strip District however I don't think there are any other ones as conveniently located. Their frozen thin sliced beef tends to be pretty good quality compared to the Chinese grocery stores. They also have a good variety of Korean snacks. read more

Since moving out to Pittsburgh, I was hoping to find a Korean grocery store to replenish my ramen stock. This grocery store is very convenient for those attending CMU. Although Seoul Mart is cramped, they do have all the basics; however, I leave the store with sour impressions of the owners. They just seem so... irky. Another reason I find this store a little shady is that most of their groceries do not have price tags on them. I've been charged differently for the same item. One night, I was in the store and 3-4 little kids were running around and playing tag. (Do they double up as a daycare?) I love kids, but it's not the experience you want while you're quickly picking up 3 bags of ramen. Mind you, this is a small store. I live down the street from Seoul Mart but I drive down to Squirrel Hill to go to Young's Grocery Store instead (on Forward+Murray, I think). UGH. I reeeeaally do NOT like coming here. I like their selection of meats, produce, and banchan... ...but the woman who runs the store is consistently rude to anyone that she doesn't know. I don't care if people are slightly aloof--I'm used to Asian immigrants being shy and reserved, but this lady is straight up RUDE to me every time I've been here. I'll bow and give a respectful greeting in Korean, and she'll either look at me blankly, or just stare off coldly, unresponsive to my attempt to be polite. Then whenever she bags my groceries, she just jams things together haphazardly. Who drops apples from a foot up onto a hard surface? Apparently she thinks this is cool. Maybe she loves eating bruised apples that she paid wayyyy too much for. God forbid I have a question about something--she'll respond with a sigh and frown, looking at me like I'm some buffoon for not knowing whether they have something in stock. But I almost could accept this behavior if it was consistent... but she turns into sweetness and light whenever someone she knows is in the store. Oh THAT'S when the charm and manners come out! I started coming here regularly because they're located much closer to where I live then my other favorite Korean grocery, but now I'm finding myself cringing as I hand over my method of payment, realizing I'm giving business to someone who consistently makes me feel unwelcome and like my money is worthless. She even had the gall to ask me if I knew how to cook a certain product I was buying, with thinly veiled skepticism. Nope, I'm dropping $50 on something I don't know how to cook, lady. I guess they get enough business so that they can afford for her to act however she wants to whomever she wants, but I'm certainly sick of her attitude. Not cool, ahjummah. Maybe you've had too many obnoxious undergrads crowding your store, depleting your ramen stocks and faith in humanity, but you're running a business - at least TRY to be polite to your customers, ESPECIALLY if they're coming to you on a REGULAR BASIS, dropping $50-100 EACH VISIT. Overall, for Pittsburgh, this is as good as it gets. They sell the basics, rice... vegetables, frozen beef/pork/seafood, ramen, rice cookers, tofu and prepared side dishes. I would have to say, the freshly made Kimchee is by far the best tasting in town. Usually thursday and saturdays are the best days to shop here since they receive a delivery from DC or Chicago. The parking situation is really tough. You can park in the back but the road is not paved very well and the spots are tight. read more

What kind of supermarket doesn't list their products' prices?? While the saying "if you need to ask, you probably can't afford it", isn't justified here, this unlabeled system does not leave customers with a good feeling. Namely the feeling that the prices are arbitrarily adjusted customer-to-customer. Would it hurt the owner/employees to smile and not appear inconvenienced when you, the customer, asks the price. At least Lotus in the strip district has prices and is equally rude to all customers. I avoid coming here, though I live close by for these reasons. read more

I am relieved by the existence of Korean groceries market near by my house. Meanwhile I also admit that there is lack of diversity. Korean food tastes differently depending on the types of tofus, mushrooms and concentration of soy sauce , etc. For instance, josun soy sauce is good to be used for soup or nabe and yangjo soy sauce is for boiled beef something like that. This subtle distinction can be leaded to big difference. So...... I just hope I could have a wider selection of each ingredient. read more

The last time I came was in 2016. I was the only person parked at the back, and I was only there to grab two jars of kimchi, which took 3 mins top. The male owner came out from the back yelling at me because I did not park exactly the way he wanted, so I moved my car according to his request. Small, Korean-owned grocery store. Not a huge selection but honestly the only of its kind in the area. I didn't have any issues with service or finding what I needed but one qualm I do have is that many of the items don't have prices listed and when you get rung up, it's kind of expensive. If you've ever read any of my reviews you'll know that I have spent a considerable time in Korea and have a Korean wife so Korean grocery stores are a place we visit on a regular basis. Therefore I feel inclined to review Seoul Mart. Seoul Mart has figured out that they have a monopoly in an area with a massive amount of Korean students and faculty. The only other comparable Korean marts are too far away for the majority of students therefore they're forced to shop at Seoul Mart if they want a taste of home. I see a lot of people saying that the staff are cold and hard to deal with, you're 100% if I go without my wife they treat me like I am pestering them, when my goes they're extremely outgoing and talk to me like I am a completely different person. Next, the prices here are a bit high borderline ridiculous you can get the same stuff at Sambok, Youngs, Trader Joes, Market District, or Orient Mart on McKnight for cheaper. For example we like Mochi Ice cream (not Korean) at Seoul Mart it's 5.99 at Trader Joe's it's 3.99. Lesson is unless it's something Korean that you absolutely cannot find elsewhere there really is no point going to Seoul Mart. I paid for couple of things and as i was leaving i said "thank you" but she was already back to talking to her friend and got completely ignored. This place is luckily a hop away from me so after class or work i hop over to get my cucumbers and pepper paste. Where I grew up, I bought Korean groceries in huge megamarts specializing in Korean goods, but I'm pleasantly surprised by what they have in stock here. I mean most Korean dishes use a mix of six ingredients and they have all six in stock so I'm satisfied. The veggies are always fresh and it's such a convenient location. My only complaint is that the Korean lady behind the register gives me death glare, but I can live with that. read more

This place is absolutely disgusting and extremely rude. I came to the US when I was 17 and I moved from the west coast to the east coast. They are the most rude shop owner that I had never seen in my life and treat their customer like shit. Apparently I would never come back again but I still wanna emphasize the reason and I hope no one else receive treatment like I received. This morning, I parked my car at wrong spot and this is because their parking are so tight and crazy small. Then the owner beeped at me and when I walk into the store. The moment I saw negative reviews of the store, I realized this is the "must go" for me during my trip in Pittsburgh. There is a small restaurant near where I work, run by Koreans. The bosses (two Korean ladies) are always aloof, sometimes even a little rude to customers. But they are nicer to Korean customers. However, it is one of my favorite restaurants since the food is delicious and the price is good. So when I saw the people here are also rude to non-Korean customers, I guessed they also had some good stuff. No price tags for many products, very fresh Kimchi and different Korean side dishes, like spicy sprouts. Many imported Korean snacks, which look really good. When I checked it out, that guy smiled and spoke Korean to me (maybe because I handed my credit card to him in the Korean way, which is intentional). He then becomes 200% aloof to me after figured out I don't speak Korean. 5 star for the store, and minus one star since they don't accept credit card unless your bill is more than $10. read more

Seoul Mart is small and cramped. But I'm amazed at the people who say the staff/owners are unfriendly. I am not Asian and I don't speak Korean past hello and thank you (and a few other short phrases, the answers to which I cannot understand). However, I find that everyone there has been very welcoming of my family (including our adopted Korean son... and also when we are there without any Koreans at all). They are very friendly, especially if you do try out a Korean hello or thank you. I think people who are saying they are standoffish do not understand that these folks do not speak English comfortably. They can do what they need to do, but English takes a bit of effort and focus and some days are just not good English days. Great Asian cooking ingredients and snacks that remind us of our time in Korea. Sometimes things we want are out of stock or may be a little stale from how far it had to travel to us, but usually everything is perfect. Kimchi is authentic and I think made on site, but it helps if you can read a little Korean to find the good stuff. Same for bulgogi meat. And my sons' youth group from the nearby Anglican church traipses all over the store buying things they can't identify for youth-groupy Asian food dares (or whatever they do with it) and always have a good time. Any storekeepers that put up with a gaggle of teenagers dropping in unannounced and not speaking their primary language... seriously these folks are great! read more

Once I pay a 4.15$ bill in cash using 4 one dollar bills and one quarter, the girl receive my money and throw the quarter back at me with a rude face. I do not recommend coming here. Although it is conveniently located in Oakland, you will get better service elsewhere. The staff is exceptionally unfriendly, ignored me when I asked questions, and there were barely any price tags on the products. I like the home-made treats and the freshness of the (small but good) produce section. My experience with the owners is almost the opposite of Chloe F's. When I did not want to take my change one day (bike shorts) they were very gracious, and insisted on giving me a free item. Since then, I notice that they often round down my bill if it's close to a whole dollar amount, even if I'm driving and have pockets. This has gone on for years, even if I don't come by for several months. Usually the only child in the store is their son, and it's been a treat to watch him grow up, surrounded by family and hugs. Very nice people, good stock that rotates fast enough for freshness. I don't have much experience with the frozen food or refridgerator cases, just fresh, dried, canned/jarred, various pickled veggies and drinks. I'm glad they are there. read more
