Being a former makeup artist, I could spend all day here. This is my favorite of all the beauty emporiums. They carry only the best products, and their signature line is high quality, as well. This time, I scored an amazing birthday gift and made some killer Fenty and kerastase purchases. The staff was very helpful and informative, as usual. If you are lucky enough to see Laura, from LauraMercier, she is incredibly knowledgeable. This location sucks. It is more like a Jc Penny Sephora as opposed to a real one. I order online mostly, but when I have to go in their manager is the worst. I am VIB rouge and spend so much money on sephora.com, she makes my life miserable each time I come in. I recently went in to get a sample/tester for my hospital bag cause I am very clearly 9 months pregnant. She will only give you less than a pinky nail amount in the container. Part two: The Pretty Woman montage. Stopped in to buy my mother some spendy ass perfume (Chanel No5, the big bottle) the real deal not eau. Came in with my makeup store attitude, take no shit nor prisoners, get in, get out and get the fuck out of dodge. I never get helped at any rate so why bother lingering? Instead I am checking out, being helped by a friendly fellow redhead (less blonded than I am). She tells me my hundred buck plus purchase means I should probably get myself a Sephora card and starts working it out so I get credit for my points by getting me one or some such. All I know is she mentioned freebies and I was all for it. Somehow we get to talking as I am distracted by the mall chupacabra waiting next to me- an adorable smiling baby (look it up if you are clueless). With this rare event, I find myself off guard and fessing up to my makeup cluelessness. Next thing I know I am in a makeup chair under frighteningly harsh lighting. Hello, pores, red blotches, too many freckles (age spots?) and ewww blackheads. An angel named Jessica takes pity on me and decides to prettify me. She takes an electronic spinning brush and cleanses, then moisturizes, she even takes care of my chapped lips. Next I am primed with disappearing goo, then an application of a warming tone of color makes me look less ghostly and magically changes my skin to a single pleasant shade. Who knew that one needs three cheek colors? Not me. Those are blended with a brush after they go on and make me look ten pounds thinner. She manages to wield her tools around my blinky eyes and magically they are huge and you notice my eyes are not merely blue but green as well. She even fixes my ruined eyebrows (damn you Elle). A slash of lippy and I am finished. My husband was impressed, he had left to go drool at the Apple store and returned to find me tarted up which is not a regular thing. He was happily taken aback. My only minor quibble is I had asked for a daytime look and the eyes were definitely nighttime only. I think the pale strawberry blonde thing makes what would be ordinary makeup on others look a lot more vampy. At any rate it was quite glam. I bought the basics and skipped the more vibrant bits. My husband had to take me out and show me off. Bonus. So at long last I get my moment in the sun. Woohoo. I did linger at the jewelry place across the way but no ruby necklace was forthcoming for me to complete the fantasy, my husband did offer to swing by Target for some fake bling though.... So I guess I have to redeem this Sephora here at Yelp. I will be returning now because, heck, it was fun. read more

I like me some Sephora, but I was disappointed with the selection after Christmas. I came looking for Philosophy bath gels, sniffed 7 (I've sniffed before) then realized that was the entire inventory. What? So we left, winding our way through masses of women in front of mirrors trying out mascaras and lipglosses (who does this anymore? They say you're supposed to toss your mascara after YOU get sick... and you're trying on Try Me! beauty products that God knows who has put on their face before you? Ick!) I didn't buy anything, even with serious prompting from Ken. That's never happened before... I'm scared. Five stars for Wyatt who helped me for a solid twenty minutes. He was patient and kind. 0 stars for not having what I needed in stock, having matched me incorrectly for foundation to begin with, not being able to use my store credit to order what I needed, and for the woman who helped me, then pawned me off on Wyatt without properly explaining the situation to him... then when he asked for clarification she was visibly snippy in front of me, which I found off putting and put me in a bad mood. 2 stars for the manager (?) who explained the situation to me as if I was a four year old. Do yourself a favor and just order what you need from Sephora.com to begin with. Apparently they can't match your skin tone in store and when they screw up they won't help you much. read more

Update: I went back to this Sephora a few times recently and everyone was really attentive and willing to help. Thank you for restoring my good feelings! I normally love this Sephora, but I just left after being told to wait for someone to help me, then waiting ignored for 10 minutes...I felt like I was handed from person to person, and then everyone went to do other things or help other people or talk with each other, and I was ignored. Friday 8/14/2015, 12:30 pm Well, I decided to give this place another chance and I went in with the intention of updating my previous 2 star review to something better, but instead I have to leave a lousy 1 star. The same lady I referenced in my last review started to approach me just after I walked in, but after a glance at me, she just ignored me and walked by again. I expressed to her my dissatisfaction with her attitude from both last time and this time. She got defensive and said she isn't sure who she's already greeted. I pointed out that I had just walked in, which she had noticed. Then she pretty much went off unapologetically and reminding me they get excellent reviews for customer service. Well, read the read reviews on Yelp, because there are others who feel dissatisfied with the customer disservice here. (admittedly not all). I was going to buy some things, but in the end I decided to just leave and shop at a different Sephora and boycott this location for good. Besides, after our little discussion she moved to the cash register and I didn't want to take the risk of having to give her my personal information. SMH. Why are some people in the customer service industry if they only pick and chose who they're going to give good service to? I don't know what her criteria is for how she discriminates who is worth greeting/helping and who isn't, but hat or no hat, I don't have whatever it is. read more

I'm really surprised by the negative reviews. I've been there a few times recently and all the employees were super nice and helpful. They greeted me when I came in, asked if I needed help finding anything and then left me alone to browse. They had my Fenty Beauty lip color in stock (PMS). I also tried their foundation match appointment. I'm a really hard skin tone match (too dark or I look like I have jaundice). I really appreciate the extra time they took to help find the right shade of foundation and concealer in cruelty free products. read more

The staff at the Briarwood mall provides token pleasantry and not actual assistance to the customer. The testers and display make-up have no protective barrier as at Ulta and Target. This Sephora is the absolute worst place to go to if you are looking for warm Michigan Hospitality. Most of the workers are shady and conceited. The Sephora inside JCPenney at the same mall has always been pleasant. If I could give negative stars to the standing Sephora, I would. So how to review a place where I've never bought any products? Well, let's see. Every time I go to Briarwood with my girlfriend we HAVE to stop here first. Her face lights up like "a kid in a candy store" (Vi V.). She tries out the lotions and makes me smell them (and they smell pretty good too). The people working there always help her when she can't seem to find whatever it is she's looking for. I suppose I know this place is great because it makes my girlfriend happy and she flipped out with freakish ebullience when she saw there was going to be a Sephora in Ann Arbor (never mind I had no idea what Sephora was at the time). But now that I do, I don't really care, but if it makes her happy I guess this place really is awesome. Sephora. FINALLY! A Sephora in Ann Arbor!! Sephora is the ultimate playground for women of all ages - how can a girl not like make ups??? And I am like a kid in a candy store in there no matter how many times I've tried on nearly everything ( they always have something new!) Anyway, I absolutely love love love Sephora's concept which believes in potential buyers' ability to feel, smell and apply the products in order to get a better sense of how well suited they are to them. Aside from being able to sample almost every product they carry, they also have free make up consultations everyday. And the staff at Sephora are always cheery and helpful. I've had some positive experiences at this particular location but the customer service I have received regarding an online order has turned me away from Sephora for good. 3 weeks after ordering no one knew where my package was or when I would received it. Sephora and USPS both insisted my package wasn't lost but I still haven't received anything. Shipping USPS when people spend as much money as they do here is crazy. I shop the Sephora website on a weekly basis and frequent their stores to see & try on products in person. There's no doubt that I spent $500+ a year here and absolutely love the range of products they carry. Unfortunately, since moving to Ann Arbor for school 8 months ago from SF, I've had repeated bad experiences at this location to a point where it's starting to affect my opinion of Sephora as a brand. On multiple occasions, the staff seemed no more knowledgeable about their products than I am from reading product reviews online. Even asking for makeup application and help in selecting a color that matches my skin tone has resulted in makeup that I can't wait to run home and take off or return (again, I coulda just ordered random colors off the site and had the same results). What really ticked me off yesterday was that I showed up at the store at 10:30am on a Sunday because I was told that there would be an in-store promotional event where participants would get mini-makeovers and be entered into a drawing to win a gift basket of products. Of course, when I showed up with a friend of mine, there were literally only 2 other customers in the store. No one greeted us or told us about the event and we had to ask about it specifically before my friend got her mini-makeover. When she finished, we again had to ask our makeup artist specifically about the gift basket drawing. She seemed confused about whether or not the drawing had already happened, which is strange because I'd think it'd be pretty obvious if there was a drawing with a winner in the past half hour. Anyway, she radio-ed the manager to ask and then relayed to us that the drawing had already happened despite the fact that we were told the drawing would be happening at 11 and it wasn't 11 yet. Disappointed, we wondered off to look at some makeup I had been eying online only to be interrupted by the same makeup artist 3 minutes later that the drawing had actually NOT happened yet (sooo...why would they said it had just 3 minutes ago?) and that they were going to do it right then. She also informed us that we could only be entered into the drawing if we made a purchase...right then. Seriously?!? Not only did the event flyer not say a purchase was required, but how was I supposed to make up my mind in the next 1 minute on what I wanted to buy just so I could be entered into a drawing that I was originally promised for simply showing up to the event? Another minute passes and the lady returns to ask if we would like raffle tickets anyway to enter the drawing without making a purchase. I happily nod despite yet another obvious contradiction to what she just told me. While I scrambled to remember what I have in my online shopping list that I could purchase, I see one girl at the checkout counter shriek in excitement and knew that she just won the gift basket drawing. Hmm, is it pure coincidence that of the 4 customers in the store, the only one who just made a purchase won the drawing? Interesting. It's not that I'm hugely disappointed about the outcome of the drawing as I am about the customer service in general. It's just frustrating to see that for an event they advertised, no one seems to know what's going on, what they told me was repeatedly contradicting, and the result was an obviously rigged drawing. As the gift basket winner walked out the store, I could also see that there was no basket - she got a tiny satchel of some sample products that she probably woulda gotten with a regular online purchase anyway. All in all, I think my Sephora experiences will now be limited to online only. If I have to have to have to go to a store, I'd rather drive 45 minutes to Novi for the next closest location. read more

I don't typically shop at the mall but tonight I stopped by to try and purchase a product suggested by a make-up artist I trust. I arrived on a Monday night at around 5:15pm. I walked in, directly went to a sales associate when I found the brand I was seeking had been moved, she was already talking into her microphone and she directed me to the product line and said she would call a make up artist. After several minutes a lovely associate came to me and I informed her of the brand and specific line of foundation I was interested in purchasing but I needed to be color matched. This associate was quite nice and led me to the center artistry counter then explained that a device she would use would give us an accurate reading of the color that should match my skin. She conducted the reading then showed me the different brands and colors within the brand that should match my skin. The device was spot on as I recognized several brands and the associated color of foundation I actually own. She went to get the foundation and tried it on me. It was perfect. I thought, what the heck, let's go all out and try some other items. I told her I was up for trying anything new and off she went to find products to try on me. She was delightful and quite talented in her application. She left me several times to go get product then came back to apply. At one point she left to go get some product and well, I waited, and waited, and waited for her return. I got my phone out and checked work email, then facebook and the weather. She still hadn't returned. At that point I went to my clock app and set the timer function for 30 seconds. I went through two 30 second timings then went to my stopwatch and started the stopwatch. I thought, geesh, am I going to have to leave? At what point do I become a sucker for waiting so long? I decided if the stopwatch reached three minutes then I would leave. And, indeed it did. At the three minute mark, I put away my glasses, my phone and zipped up my purse. Looked around and saw no one so I got up and slowly walked to the mall entrance. Slowly walked to the mall entrance. No one stopped me, no one acknowledged me, I just walked out. I am a professional woman with disposable income. I don't know where the make-up artist went but she lost out on at least $100+ in a sale. I would have probably spent $300 on the items she was showing me. I just don't understand this Sephora but I no longer need to worry as I will never, ever step foot inside this store again. You have lost my business. read more

I don't understand the bad reviews on this store. I had a great experience here, I was looking to buy a new foundation with full coverage, their color match was exact and the associates were nothing but helpful. I was skeptical of the whole "Sephora inside JC Penney" thing, but I had a really good experience here. Bianca took great care of me, asked me lots of questions and applied my smoky eye like a pro, explaining what she did along the way. Four stars because Bianca was the only one in the store for quite a bit of my visit, so she did need to stop a handful of times to help other shoppers. read more

I went to Sephora on a Saturday night and had 2 ladies help me with a few make-up questions, facial cleanser questions and fragrance questions. They were very knowledgeable and informative and friendly. Upon checking out, the cashier noticed I had bought a facial cleanser and gave me a sample of the night-time version of that same cleanser for me to try. I came in and Kim greeted me. I told her I was getting engagement pictures taken that day, and that I was bad with makeup. She offered to either walk me around and suggest some products, or she said I could get a full makeover with a $50 purchase. I am so happy I accepted, because she BLEW ME AWAY! She did an absolutely breathtaking job and was very friendly and easy to talk to. She asked for my opinion and gave her own suggestions in a perfect balance. She paid so much attention to every detail and I felt like she really cared about the end look -- she wasn't just trying to throw a sample on me and move me along. My makeup has never looked so good in my whole life! I wish I could get more products for my money, as I was only able to get the foundation and an applicator sponge. But next time I have an excuse to splurge, I will definitely be coming back and looking for Kim. I wish she lived in Indiana because I would book her for my wedding in a heartbeat. Instead I took a picture, and I will be showing it to my wedding makeup artist and saying, "Do that!" Amazing work! It made a fun and special day for me even more special. Thank you! read more

I have been to many stores like this in the area. If you are wanting kind, friendly service at a sephora store, go to the one that isn't inside jc penney. Everytime I go to this one the people here are rude! Recently I went in to return a product. The girl acted like she was mad that I was returning it. I returned it within the guidelines of their policy and told her the reason for returning the product. She basically told me in so many words that my reason wasn't valid and treated me like an idiot. I told her that based on what her sales person told me I expected the product to work differently. She wanted to know the name of the sales person, because she should have known better than to tell me that the product worked the way she said. I didn't give her the name. I have waited 24 hours and nothing has gone back on my card. So I called them to see if it was pending. She didn't even look. She said that it could take 3 days to a week depending on my bank and was very rude about it. I have never had that issue with my bank before. But I called my bank and they didn't see anything in the system for a return to be processed. The lady at my bank told me it all depended on when the store down loaded it the system and that in almost all cases stuff like that is credited on the morning of the next business day.... Number one, don't be rude. Number two, don't throw another employee under the bus it looks bad not on them.... but on you for acting that way. Not very professional. Usually going to this store is a 50/50 as to what type of experience I will receive. And today was the worst. Now don't get me wrong, they do have some nice coworkers, I have two in mind whom I know for sure every time I go there are so helpful and polite (ones name is Kelly and the other is a a woman who's name I do not know but she is African American Woman who usually wears a high top Bun in her hair.) and I thank them for being there and making that store so welcoming! But today I had such a bad experience that I had to write a review. I am a weekly shopper here and am always purchasing items. I have only twice returned an item without receipt. Over the weekend I received the $7 sephora lipgloss, as a bday gift that had no Gift receipt. I got the chase to swiped it on and didn't like it. I instantly returned it to the store today, Monday, and instantly I felt the vibes front the cashier that were not so pleasant. I told her I wanted to return the item and told her I did not have the receipt and that I got t as a gift over the weekend and instantly I could tell she did. Or believe me. When she spoke to me she showed little close to no interest in communication and kept saying statements about their return policy and that for the next time I come in must keep up with me receipt. But I clearly could not keep up with a receipt I never had if the person who gave me the gift never gave me a gift receipt with the lipgloss. I instantly felt the vibe of her presence and tone of voice that she must have thought I had stolen the item form the store. I haven't stolen anything a day in my life so it was upsetting to feel like you are being labeled as a thief by and associate. I use to work in retail for 4 years and understand that people do come in and steal from retail stores. But being that I am a known face in the store and is constantly spending money on the products here and have always had receipts on returns. That the way she acted was a slap in my face. She asked for my ID and my return was accepted and she then gave me the receipt and showed again on paper that receipts are mandatory in a dull tone. I then said thank you and she didn't reply. As I walked alway I could feel stares. I just don't like the fact that returning and item ONCE without a receipt and with truthful reason that I am now labeled as a thief! I know it wasn't vocally said by her, but her actions said it all. I've been in retail for a long time, and the tone and looks she gave me are traits I've seen before when employees believe they have caught a thief in their store. And I'm pretty sure she has told her manager as well that I have "stolen" their merchandise. I couldn't tell you how much money I have spent in that store! And for her to make me feel like a criminal is so hurtful. I wish there was a different sephora Around me, but there isn't. But, if there were one I would happily take my money elsewhere and not feel like I am being labeled like I was today in this Sephora in Briarwood. I just wish all the associates could at least fake like they care at all about the Customer! read more
