I just took the airport train home to Norristown a few days ago. Thankfully, it was on time but it is not equipped to handle one piece of luggage. I am extremely fit and, as I was trying to get my luggage down the steps in Norristown, the doors closed on me several times. Don't you have cameras or sensors to see that people are still walking off the train? The European trains are not only clean and spacious for luggage, but cameras and sensors all over. I often wind up riding the train by myself. I have seen the conductors not care if the train is overcroweded for certain events. Last week there were woman that piled up on top of me by accident. When I asked for help they did not care. The conductors often do not scan my card because they do not care about getting the money or doing their job. It often seems like that most of the conductors just want to go home. Some of the men are nice but is is often the case that some of the people are nice and some are not. read more

SEPTA REGIONAL RAIL in the PHILA area may well be the WORST train service in the entire country. I think the percentage of times it is on time is less than 10%! I generally take the train prior to the one I actually need because the service is so terribly unreliable! The other night I was returning from the PHILA light show and the 1003 PM PAOLI/ THORNDALE line I was trying to use was 75 minutes late on my arrival and actually got to SUBURBAN STATION 90 minutes late!! at 1130PM! I likely could have walked home in that time duration or taken an AMTRAK to NYC to visit with my son who lives there. If this service were not so pathetic it would be comical. Unfortunately it is no joke to the thousands of patrons trying to plan excursions into PHILA CENTRAL and back to the suburban area to say nothing of getting to the airport in a timely manner. The system needs to be either scrapped and rebuilt or upgraded with new trains/ tracks/ signals/ computers whatever. Somebody please do something to make this system work properly ! read more

While researching places and things for an upcoming trip to Philly, I discovered that I would qualify for a free SEPTA transit pass. I made an appointment to get one on my first morning in Philly. Applying for the pass was speedy and easy, and the staff was helpful. (And, it's good for 4 years, so I'll be set when I return!) Pass in hand, I was ready to explore Philly, and boy did I! While the SEPTA operation could certainly improve some things, I found the modes of transportation I used (bus, train, and trolley) very efficient, frequent enough, and they got me very close to where I wanted to go in all cases. I was impressed with how extensive the network is and how many hours the buses run...well into the night. And, how many people actually use public transit in Philly, compared to my home city of San Diego. I learned from a fellow bus rider that there is a transit app that will help you navigate any transit system, and I found that app tremendously helpful as the route maps that SEPTA are not helpful. Yes, each line has its own brochure, which IS, of course, helpful. But, what SEPTA needs to make available to the public, and in an easy format, is a master system map showing all connecting lines and modes of transport. Had I not known about the transit app, I would probably have had a difficult time navigating the transit system. One thoughtful employee, a young woman at the Suburban Station made, sure that I got on the correct rail line, by looking for me at the correct platform, before she took her break. read more

I take the L train to go to work everyday. It's the worst experience ever. Never on time, very dirty. The train stops between stops and stays there 10 minutes without letting you know what's the problem or giving you an estimate time of leaving. The Bus Operators are so privileged and disrespectful.' I spoke to a woman this morning and she said nothing back but had her nose up and pursed lips. Then spoke to the older White Gentlemen onboard or boarding. And as I got off she stayed parked at the stop way after I walked in front of the Bus which I never see and felt like that was another jab... I've noticed they strike against the people almost every year complaining about not enough pay and have cut almost 50% of the routes or more since the 90s when they had pleasant drivers. What I'm mad about is the the schedule is telling me the bus is coming, 5 minutes, 10 minutes, 15 minutes from now and it never comes. All I want is some transparency so I know how I can get home. It's like they scrape the bottom of the barrel for all the sludge and these people are who they come up with. There was a guy laying on the steps dying and the worker laughed at him. I couldn't get a good pic of her face but she is just a horrible person. I hope my kids never have to go anywhere near where she works. I'm from NYC. I recently visited the City of Brotherly Love. I used the Market-Frankford Line and the Regional Rail West Trenton line. The Market Frankford line is a hot mess. When I took the train, there were people smoking weed and playing loud music with profanity. I also saw kids play fighting. When I got on the elevator at 30th Street station, I saw a hypodermic needle on the floor. The Regional Rail train was very clean and comfortable. However, it's also very infrequent. Outside of rush hour, most lines run every 2 hours. If you're in the Philadelphia area, pay the extra money and take Uber. read more

I would like to give Septa 0 stars as this is a very corrupt company. When you call ahead to ask prices for different trips the people at septa don't know what they're talking about and you get money take from your travel wallet for Septa employee mistakes. I've been on the phone with amateur septa employees who put in my requests for crediting my account t back for the money your company keeps stealing from me, but the requests fall on deaf ears and they end up stealing more money without resolving past issues, I'm going to head down to 1234 Market this week due to their ineptitude in resolving money matters, or I really should be honest and say they are stealing money from the public. A reminder to all, check your trip history and make sure this company is not taking money from you every day. read more

The subway's useful but has problems. The renaming they're doing for the lines is confusing for visitors and first-time users. The automated system for announcing stops on-board the train was announcing the wrong stops. The machines had trouble scanning my phone (Apple Pay). The trains move quickly because they don't stay in each station for very long--but that also means it's easy to miss your stop. read more

Most of the bus drivers are nice, but the ones that are not are SO bad that it gives the entire organization a bad name. These are the ones that make it a habit of acting in the most off-putting, grossest of ways. The ones who not only speed, cut off cars, curse at the top of their lungs at drivers with a bus load of passengers, they then turn around and act like they can do and say whatever they want, be as disrespectful as they want and it's okay because nobody is around to see it. You don't know these people - never saw them before, but they rope you into an argument you didn't ask for and do everything they can, in the space of a minute or two, to drag you down to their level. If you're not careful, a two minute interaction with a driver like this can ruin your entire day. It's very unlikely, but my hope is that the Septa drivers with the huge chips in their shoulder can heal and learn how to approach their career in a professional manner, even if that means leaving the more unpleasant aspects of their personalities at the door. I decided to challenge myself and walk 10 minutes from my Jersey house to the PATCO line to 8th and Market, then switch to the Market Frankford Line to get to 30th Street Station and AMTRAK it to Boston, and then on to Portland, Maine by bus. The good news is that I survived. Not going to lie, between all the crime and bad news lately, it was a bit nerve wracking, even though it was only 7:00 AM when I arrived, and on the way home it was about 7:00 PM. Philadelphia does have a fairly extensive transit system, but I wasn't impressed with it. The airport train was reasonably efficient, but had an extra charge, albeit not as outrageous as at some cities. The different trains were poorly integrated, and one had to walk from one station to another in some instances. The light rail wasn't working when I tried and a bus was running instead, but not on time. A train station closed me out before the last train of the day. The system was old, and the stations dirty. I wished I hadn't spent the money on day passes and instead had just gotten and airport ticket and walked. As a visitor who went multiple places that were very much on the train lines, they just weren't that helpful to me. Additionally, the card they have was quite strange and seemed set up as a quasi debit card, which is not what I'm looking for. If anything, I would want them to simply accept payments directly as some of the more advanced payment systems do, but this seems like an explicit step away from that. read more
