Special tiger roll. Look at that fancy wasabi.

Came to celebrate our anniversary and had a great time at Sequoia. We arrived at 530 so it was still happy hours and started ordering one of everything thinking it will be small bites. Oh boy, were we surprised. Keep that in mind. We didn't know how generous they are with the serving and also ordered salad, sashimi and ramen. That was way too much food for two. Now we have another yummy second meal. Will definitely be back and maybe bring a bigger group. See captions of photos.

    Beautiful detail on the plate!

Our server was attentive and knowledgeable, made us feel very welcome on Valentine's Day and the restaurant was decorated so festively for Valentine's. I enjoyed my vegetarian gyoza. My seaweed salad was ok, not sure I dig the combo of seaweed and lettuce, but it was interesting to try. Chill vibe. It was fun and light atmosphere.

The food is phenomenal. The spicy tuna crispy rice is one of the best foods I've had in Madison. The ambiance is a good mix between casual and dressy. Depending on how busy they are, the service is not always the best. We typically find that ordering everything (drinks, apps, and entrees) at once is the way to go.

Average to slightly below average. It's been 6 years since I have been back and while I wasn't that enamored the first time, I thought things must have improved if they are still open. Meh, not really. A very limited and non creative menu (sushi related). Rolls were not well constructed and essentially flavorless. Service was haphazard. Was anything exceptionally terrible? No. But was anything noteworthy to warrant a repeat visit? Also no. Although a close walk from the house, proximity doesn't mean I'll be back.

Great environment! Got the crispy rice with spicy tuna and firecracker roll. Nice presentation. Slightly pricey but good quality food so worth the money. Would definitely make a reservation next time and also maybe try the ramen!

Classy little joint for sushi and ramen. Fun and fancy decor. We all got ramen and really enjoyed it. There was only one person working the front but we were the only ones there so she was very attentive and friendly.

Decorated for Valentine's, the was the perfect winter evening dinner date. Right across from Trader Joe's, the ambience was reminiscent of the old Greenbush neighborhood while still staying modern and elevated all at once. Staff were warm and welcoming, patient and genuine. Our pork bun appetizer was juicy, well-filled and pillowy. No complaints here! We tried the rakkasei dry ramen with a peanut base. Surprisingly, they retained the Japanese flavor with the seaweed sprinkle topping and the sauce was just the right amount, consistency and peanut flavor. Both sushi rolls lived up to my excitement: the cranberry smoke and aburi salmon. Both really well-rolled with the perfect rice texture and ratio, every bite was oh so yummy. Plating was super pretty and elevated too For drinks, I had a blue lagoon and while it was nice, the color and taste reminded me of Fanta blueberry but spiked, so it was not my favorite I did not finish it. Nice mix of flavors though on the menu, made it hard to pick! Will be back to try more of their menu! Thanks to Sequoia for being a gem

The service was wonderful. Their food was well put together. Nice flavors combinations. I ordered the veggie Tempura without reading it was asparagus and sweet potato‍ the sauce was an aïoli and instead of the sweet sauce I ordered the Wisco roll. They must have de seeded the jalapeños as I didn't sense the spice very much I ordered the rainbow roll. It was nice having the different options. They also ordered the dragon, which was tasty as well The rolls tasted like they were made fresh Thank you Sequoia

We loved this place! I had no idea it was a sushi restaurant, but I see it every time I walk to Trader Joe's. I had the vegetarian ramen, and it was perfect. The broth was rich and savory, and the fried tofu was perfect. I would recommend eating the tofu first if you get this dish, as it gets soggy if you let it sit in the broth too long. The presentation of all of our dishes was beautiful, as you can see from the flaming sushi roll! Our waiter, Nathan, was absolutely amazing. He made us feel so welcome, made excellent suggestions, and was overall very kind. The restaurant itself was so cozy, and the decorations were so so cute. Would definitely recommend for a date night or birthday dinner!

Went here with a large group. Lovely big table by a window. Great sushi! Nigiri in particular was real nice. Honey bbq wings were very solid. Good pork bun and gyoze, and edamame was a delight. Personally really didnt care for the ramen. The house ramen I didnt really enjoy - just not seasoned enough - unsure if they season it with Tare but didnt taste it. They did have a pretty good miso ramen though that had some good spicy oil!

Excellent sushi - presentation, variety and quality are the best we've experienced in Madison. Nice ambiance and great bar for evening cocktails. They have some unique sushi options on their menu that are different from anything we've seen. We've enjoyed sushi in large cities like NYC and LA and Sequoia would rival any of the excellent sushi restaurants in a larger metropolitan area.

We had a great lunch at Sequoia on Monroe Street! They had tasty and beautiful cocktails. I was delighted seaweed salad was on the menu - it's so fresh and I love the flavor. They offered us a free eggroll "snack" before our food came that was a surprise treat. Their lunch menu features two specialty rolls for $29. Not a bad deal, and food was very good and plated very artistically. I was about to say that the rolls weren't anything different, but there was one that really stood out. The cranberry smoke has seared ribeye, cranberry sauce, shrimp tempura, and cream cheese. Sounds weird? Maybe. But it was pretty great. We really liked the atmosphere- lots of wood, hanging lanterns, oh, and a nice tap beer selection, which felt unexpected for a sushi place. Service was kind. We will be back!

Living on the West Coast we have multiple options so this was a nice and unexpected surprise when we popped in for lunch on the way back from the airport. We opted for a shoyou Ramen as well as a tonkatsu Ramen. Both were rich and flavorful and had plenty of toppings. It came with an egg, although we ordered additional eggs on the side. I saw a vegetarian one go by and that also looked phenomenal. It was a really large portion and we took some of it home. Service was friendly. Parking was on the street. I went on a weekday lunch, so there was no wait--only one other customer when I arrived. I ordered the pork belly tonkotsu ramen because I prefer a creamy, richer broth. I almost went for the spicy crab, but since it included ground pork, I switched. My food came out in about ten minutes, which wasn't too bad. The broth was flavorful and rich, though I wish it had been served a little hotter. Portion size was generous, and I especially appreciated the bamboo shoots and perfectly soft-boiled egg. Overall, I was in and out in about 30 minutes. The quality was good, though prices are on the higher side at about $15 per bowl. They do offer a loyalty program (buy 10, get the 11th free), which is a nice perk. Street parking is terrible and I ended up using the parking garage across the restaurant.

She was very careful about our allergy concerns and made sure to take care of us (my daughter has a severe fish allergy and needed her ramen free of fish cake & sauce). For an appetizer, I had the gyoza, and it was perfect. Evenly fried and steamed, even if it was just frozen stuff from the bag like at the Japanese restaurant I used to work at, it was at least prepared with skill. My main entree was the garlic miso ramen. And while each component worked on its own, all of them put together made it seem less as a whole. My biggest issues were the chashu pork which came out a little overcooked. I know the reason, and probably shouldn't hold it against them, but it reminded me a bit of the overcooked pork of my childhood. The other issue was the broth. It was sweet on the backend, which really didn't do it for me the more I've thought about it. I'm not sure if it was the pork broth or the tare. My suspicion lies heavier towards the tare than the broth, but I could be wrong. Either way, I felt that such noticeable sweetness was out of place especially since it did too much to counter the garlic flavor. I suspect it was there to do that for those who don't like a heavy garlic flavor, but then again, if you don't like garlic flavor, you shouldn't be ordering something labeled as garlic on the menu. I will say that marinating the egg was a nice touch and gave it a depth of flavor that typically isn't there from other ramen places I've tried. Otherwise, it was good overall, it just felt like it didn't completely come together with the sweetness of the broth and the pork being a tad overcooked. Still, despite perhaps not looking like it, Zen Ramen was a solid little ramen shop on the East Side and I would not oppose going back to try some of their other ramen bowls. It might not blow your mind if you're a regular ramen connoisseur, but is still a solid spot if you want something affordable and unpretentious.

The neighborhood is nice and Sake Sushi is located in a small plaza, however I almost missed it since it is located on the side of the plaza and was not visible from the street. Inside I found an interesting mix of decor, it seems like a traditional Asian restaurant with white linen tableclothes and also some very modern touches including neon strip lighting along the ceiling and a variety of light fixtures. Overall a bit of a mishmash that would be better if they picked one style and stayed with it. I got there in the late afternoon so the place was empty at first, I was seated and given the menu which allows you to fill out what you want. The menu is fairly similar to other AYCE sushi places I have been at. Of note is that at dinner you can order up to 15 pieces of sashimi without an extra charge. I ordered a nice selection of sashimi, some sushi, a couple of different maki rolls, the salmon skin salad and the seafood soup. Interestingly the sashimi and sushi came out first, then the maki rolls, then the soup and salad. The sashimi was very good, fresh with nice sized pieces; the nigiri sushi had a nice portion of seafood to rice. I was a bit disappointed with the seafood soup, just a bit under seasoned and too much bean sprouts. The salmon skin salad was excellent with nicely roasted smoked salmon skin mixed with a bit of eel sauce, delicious, crunchy and one of my favorites that you don't see everywhere. I also enjoyed the scallops sashimi, large fresh raw scallops with a nice delicate flavor and texture. The maki rolls were good as well, nicely sized with plenty of filling. I did really enjoy the Super Lobster Roll with shrimp tempura, cucumbers, avocado then topped with lobster salad; the lobster salad was a nice treat, although I think it was made with lagostino lobsters it was still tasty. I also liked their version of spider roll, the soft shell crab was crispy and flavorful. I enjoyed my meal at Sake Sushi, dinner was $30 for all you can eat. The sushi and sashimi were very good, of course not quite the same quality as the best sushi bars but pretty close. Service was good and there are plenty of choices, including noodle dishes, fried rice, hibachi and tempura. The decor is a bit of a miss, but nothing that will keep you from enjoying your meal. Well worth a try if you are hungry and feel like some sushi and Japanese food.
