Visited Sequoia on Sunday night. It was my first time there, and I am ALWAYS jazzed to check out a new sushi place. The restaurant is adorable, and seeing that they kept the GORGEOUS bar from Brocach made me very happy (the bar has likely been there since before Brocach too, I just know it from going there). The restaurant was pretty empty (started filling up a bit as we were leaving). I actually loved the menu for the fact that it is fairly simple. I am obsessed with sushi, and so I find it can be difficult to order from a restaurant that has SO many sushi roll options! I can never make up my mind. Sequoia has all the necessary rolls, and a few concise specials but really doesn't try to throw a bunch of options at you. I ordered the 1843 and the Monrose. I have never had a sashimi roll before (the Monrose is sashimi wrapped in soy paper with avocado on top). It was unique, fresh and delicious. My husband loved the rolls he ordered as well. The Vilas Sunrise roll he got was to freaking die for! Aside from great sushi, they also have a very nice wine list. The service was fantastic as well, our server was very helpful and sweet. The only thing negative I can say (and it's only a partial negative since I don't have all the information,) is that the ala carte sashimi seemed overly expensive compared to the other menu items. The menu doesn't state how many pieces it comes with, but ala carte usually only means one or two. So, not sure about that. Otherwise, I cannot wait to go back! read more

Great addition to the sushi scene in Madison! Fresh and delicious rolls at reasonable prices, with a good amount of variety. Atmosphere is cozy and great for small groups. Service was very fast, but we were there on a slow evening. So glad they take online reservations. Will happily go back when we're in the mood for sushi or ramen! read more

Ordered food through eat street. Was told it would arrive in an hour. Got an update from Eatstreet After 90 minutes saying the food was on its way. 30 minutes later still no food. Got in touch with Eatstreet who said that the restaurant delivers the food. Whatever. Called restaurant and was told my order would take another 30 minutes to fill. I understand the times we're living in so i give folks a lot of slack but this was terrible service. Zero stars read more

Everything about this restaurant is wrong. There's just no art here. The inside is tacky. The service is non-existent. Everything feels fake down to the imitation crab and the pre-fried soft shell crab. This is not what Japanese food is meant to be nor is it what an envisioned restaurant experience should entail. read more

First time trying out Sequoia, a very good experience. The sushi rolls were fresh and delivered promptly. We ordered a mix of classics and more creative rolls. Everything was great! Faves include the shrimp tempura and torched tuna rolls. Will definitely order again and look forward to visiting in person. A great addition to Monroe Street! read more

We made a reservation but they didn't have a table ready. No host or hostess, so it took 15 minutes to get seated. It was busy but there were only 3 people waiting tables, they were working very hard. Food was fine, but nothing special. Hopefully they can get some staff to help. Reviewing from New York City: I ordered delivery from Sequoia for my sons 18th birthday. He lives nearby and is a student. The sushi was perfect - big pieces and more than my son could finish. He has the Villa Sunrise role and a lot of salmon negri. They sent along a piece of cake for this birthday. What a charming Asian fusion spot for a cold wintry day in Madison, Wisconsin, off the beaten path of the campus and capital traffic, Monroe Street near Trader Joes is a nice spot to browse. I recommend the spicy edamame, but be warned, they are actually spicy, but they have lots of flavor other than the spice, that really comes through with sesame oil - unique and so good. Good chewy homemade ramen - and there is an option that was not on the menu but the staff toldme about - instead of the $12 portion of shoyu ramen noodles, you can get a $8 kids size portion which is perfect if you are ordering appetizers. The spicy gyoza were also tasty, but if you have to choose one appetizer, go with the edamame, they were phenomenal. read more

Let me not use the word " great addition to Monroe St/ addition " like the last 4 reviews did. Service was very attentive. Just enough, very positive, because we were slow in ordering. Really slow because we were chatting so much over our beers, And yes, we need a great Sushi restaurant in the area, because the Park St joint is lacking. ( we know where this is). My friend and I loved everything we had, although the Spicy Dragon wasn't really spicy; it was delicious but lacked the heat we thought we ordered. ( thus the 4 star). The spicy roll was very spicy and appreciated. And seeing 4 high school boys coming in and ordering was just the sweet, cozy neighborhood feel we want for a classy, yet homey restaurant. The good- Very tasty, restaurant was clean, service friendly. Rice was perfectly cooked. The caterpillar role was big, spicy and perfect. Pork ramen was very good (small to moderate portion size), except the egg which was over cooked and not yummy. The not so good- Ordered an ok chardonnay for $10, which came out as a micro-pour, personal pet peeve. The California role (7 dollars), avocado roll (8 dollars), and Philly role (8 dollars) were very good but VERY small, with only 6 little pieces in the avocado roll!. We usually go to Muramoto, also excellent food, where avocado rolls are $3.50 for 8 pieces and other simple "kid friendly" rolls for $3-4. My 6 year old could have eaten three of the avocado rolls. So unfortunately for us, the value wasn't there. That said if money doesn't play a role in your dining experience I don't think this place will disappoint. read more

We went for a birthday dinner, and it was perfect. We started off with the veggie gyoza appetizer, and then had two orders of veggie ramen (one mild, one medium spicy), two orders of veggie sushi (very tasty, with fresh ginger and wasabi), and an order each of avocado and cucumber sushi. They knew we were sharing everything, and just put the platters in the middle of the table, which worked great. The kiwi-blueberry smoothie was delicious, as was the strawberry spritzer - light and refreshing. No bobas, for which I was grateful. The service was fast (it was early and there was only one other party there). The music was cheerful but not intrusive. We got enough food, but didn't feel uncomfortably full afterwards, as is too often the case. I plan to go again! read more

We had a pick up and the sushi was not wrapped tightly, the rice falling apart. The taste is good but the presentation was poorly made. My partner and I decided to order Sequoia for dinner. I called to check if they were open and I was greeted happily by the employee on the phone. Our order was fulfilled in a timely manner and the food was amazing. They were so nice and prompt. Ramen is my favorite meal, and this was the most pathetic bowl of ramen I've ever seen in my life. If you want a bowl of noodles, a hard boiled egg, and hardly any broth, then this is your place. This is one of my favorite sushi/ramen stops in Madison. They do have regular sushi rolls you can find anywhere, but I think the original, unique rolls taste the best. One of my favorites that I can't forget, is the Volcano Roll, as well as their newly presented roll, the Torched Roll. I would also prefer their ramen over others in Madison. Such as the Sequoia Ramen, which does not lack in hardiness nor flavor. But, it's not only the entrees that need your attention. An appetizer that I order every single time I'm there, is the Pork Buns. Regardless of it being a Pork Bun, it's actually really refreshing. The food is fine, but a bit overpriced. Had the salmon skin salad, which isn't available many places in madison, and it was pretty good. The sequoia salad's peanut dressing wasn't very peanuty. The delivery is very slow. I ordered 2 hours ahead with a specified delivery time because I only had a short dinner break. They were half an hour late, and I only live ~15 minutes away from the restaurant. I tried again another time without specifying a delivery time, and it still took longer than the 90 minutes they predicted. Might go there in person some time when it's safe, but will likely not order delivery from them again. read more

We tried this new restaurant for lunch today for the first time and overall it was very good, I would come back. We tried 2 rolls the Mango Tango and Vilas Sunrise. The mango one had huge pieces of ripe mango and was a very light and refreshing. The Vilas Sunrise, we asked if could have cream cheese added she had to check, she came back and said yes but then when we got our roll it did not have cream cheese in it. We just decided to eat it and didn't want to wait, the waitress realized when we were 3/4 done and asked if we wanted a new roll to replace it and we said no. They didn't offer any sort of discount though on our bill. The roll had good flavor and texture. We ordered 2 different nigiri, seared salmon which had excellent flavor and escolar. The waitress came back and asked us if we had wanted the escolar seared and we said no but then it came out seared. The escolar I wouldn't get again, the pieces of sushi were very thin and small for the price. The biggest complaint for all of the rolls though it's at the sushi rice did not stick together in the roll, basically fell apart when you tried to pick it up with chopsticks the rice didn't stay together. I think for a new place getting started it has great potential, if they work just a little bit on the texture of the rice, I'll be glad to try some other options on the menu and drinks off their drink menu. amazing food and a beautiful place! We had dinner there last night and we have 0 complaints about the quality of the drinks or food. However, the service wasn't the best. We felt a little under assisted. My boyfriend had a thai iced tea at the beginning of the meal, finished it in 10 minutes and the glass stayed on the table the entire time we were there (about 1.5 hours, which was also unnecessary) Water was not refilled often at all. Food took a good bit of time to come out, without the restaurant being packed at all. Unsure if it was a kitchen issue or service staff issue. We ate what we ordered, then decided we wanted a few more pieces of sushi, it took about 30 minutes to get to us. Again, wonderful food and a very nice atmosphere, the service could use a tweak. read more

The minute I walked into this establishment I was met with an ambiance of welcoming simplicity, exceptionally well thought-out beauty and class (from the black, lacquered chop sticks with gold, embossed wrapped ends, to the lush bar stools & color/light theme throughout!) The owner, Zack (an open, authentic and kind person), clearly went to no expense to ensure that his restaurant met a very high bar of excellence, with every box checked. Exceptional atmosphere (check out the two private dining areas!), cuisine, staff, and customer service. A MUST "do" on your list! I was just passing by, and thought to check it out. Sequoia is a perfect addition to our neighborhood and Monroe Street restaurants!! It has a very nice atmosphere - sophisticated but very comfortably casual. Our generous pour of wine was excellent. We figured the best test was to have plain, unadulterated chef's choice nigiri and sashimi - Well, the fish selection was as fresh as it gets in Madison! It's difficult to find truly great gyoza and Sequoia got it spot on. Fresh and tender. Reservation system and service is still a bit wonky as they work through their first weeks but Sequoia seems intent on doing a good job. We'll definitely be back. read more
