Looking for spiritual change or fulfillment? This is the place that will blow your mind. This place is different! I've been in CA for almost twenty years and probably have tried about ten churches and I have never been to a similar church. I never had any issues with other churches but I have never been to a church where it would make me feel renewed during and after every service. I always blamed myself, thinking that it was because I seeking or was spiritual enough. Their recipe is simple: they believe in a God who is alive and can be evoked and present during the service, and you will feel it, no matter how your spiritual life is. If your intention is to be closer to God, you will experience that, no doubt! They truly worship. Their preaching is biblical, not to please people but to please God but still in a caring and loving way, God's way. Christianism would be in a different place if every church would prioritize the presence of Jesus as this church does. A huge plus to our family is their children's care. In other churches, it would always be super timing consuming to check in all our four kids in classes. Besides that it always would be a lot of convincing for them to be apart. By the time we would be done we would always miss a bunch of the service. Some churches even have the kids in the service for the first part of the service which was torture for me as my mom's brain would stay on plus keeping four children behaving for 30min isn't discreet enoughfor a church environment. This church doesn't do that. The kids initially stay together which is easy for them to let me go and people will be there before the time of the service, not a thing in the churches I have gone in the past. There, the kids actually have fun and learn about applicable things for their lives as children rather than just learning stories from the Bible like fairytales. Also, there is not much convincing to get them to church because they just love to be there. I don't hear "it is so boring" like I did about other churches. Gosh! The other thing for me is that people are super genuine. It is the norm there. I had given up about finding social groups that feel genuine and these people don't even try. It is super natural and the norm for them. I feel like I finally found my people. read more

I first saw Sequoyah Community Church (SCC) driving by on 580 and it has been our church home now for several years. The people at this church welcomed us from the first day we came. I love many things about SCC, but especially the passion for God's presence, a hunger to know Him better and genuine love for the body of Christ. It is truly a multi-ethnic, multi-generational, Spirit-filled church. SCC focuses on PEARL: Prayer, Evangelism, the Arts, Relationships, and Leadership through a Bible-based foundation. The worship is Spirit-led, energetic and deep. The teaching is relevant and mostly topical. There are a variety of small groups meeting throughout the week. One of the key points of groups is to help you take your next practical steps growing in your faith. My faith has grown from coming to SCC and it has truly been a blessing to be part of this community. I rarely write reviews, but I believe this is worth sharing!! I have been attending Sequoyah Community Church (SCC) since September 2018. Long story short, I was raised in a San Francisco catholic church, not meaning much other than going to church on Sunday's----I knew all along that something was missing, but I couldn't point out what it was. Like many, I left the church trying to fill a void and began living a life apart from God. Several years, and kids later, I found SCC, through a friend. Initially, I attended church by myself because I had little interest in taking part, or involving my children in any form of structured religion. But God moves through that church, and I don't mean the building, but God's church-- God knows there are some spiritual Giants there who seek for God's wisdom!! I went to many churches with the willingness to set the heart of my family in any church where we would "fit in", but we got more than that at SCC-- WE GOT CLOSER TO GOD AND HAVE FELT HIS PRESENCE, and for me in particular, the fact that my kids continue to receive love at SCC, is monumental!! I thank God for the people HE uses in that church, and my g'ness the worship team (some sweetly gifted voices), and most importantly scripture led teachings. I will never forget the second time that my dad joined me to church, he said, "you feel the love in here". Like I said earlier, I thank God for SCC, and encourage anyone who is seeking for a church, to join me along with every other member of the church in letting God do what HE does best--revealing HIS word while putting things together! This is truly Oakland's best kept secret, as far as churches are concerned! It's family oriented, and passionate about serving our community. I started going after my previous church imploded, for lack of a better word, and Sequoyah took me in and loved on me in some of my lowest moments. They were a family to me when the church family I'd known rejected me. It was a wild time for me, but SCC really loved me back to life. It's super diverse, in age and race. The worship is super passionate, and sensitive to the moving of the Holy Spirit. The senior pastor is down to earth, and a great leader. I really love this place! I currently am in ministry school in Redding, and SCC helped me get there! That being said, even though I am away, this is my home church, and it has my heart! I LOVE SEQUOYAH! read more

I thought the staff were really friendly. The music and worship singing was good. I enjoyed hearing from, I believe it was Lisa Janes. Then, I believe it was, Pastor Beiser who came on. Initially his preaching was very engaging and insightful then I got a little concerned. Red flags for me: he wanted the people to donate $300 a month to the church, he said that "even I sin", and finally he requested that the doors be shut during the final part of the service and had the ushers posted by the doors. Perhaps there were reasons for this, but I don't recall any versus in the bible about closing people into the church. It all made us feel quite uncomfortable and pretty drained, not revived, leaving the church. read more

Well.... Let me just say I found my new place of worship. This is the first church I have gone to where you get up and dance, watch a move and take home a sheet to remind you on how to stay on the right track. The people are SO FRIENDLY. I am happy to go back this next weekend and also help out at a local orphanage. The coolest and kindest church around :) So blessed to have gone and meet such great people. read more

Our new home church since my wife and I moved back to the Bay Area. From the moment we walked in, this place felt like home- smiling faces of every color and age-- SO MANY CHILDREN here! With a child now due at the end of May, this is going to be the perfect place to raise our little one. Pastor Dave has to be the most down-to-earth, caring pastor that I know- not to mention hilarious! Laughter is not far when I talk with him. His messages are always encouraging, funny, sincere, and challenging. Nestled in the Oakland right off the 88O, it's easy to get to. We have now been coming here 2 months, and are excited about the upcoming small groups in February. read more

I came here for the first time for their Halloween festival, and absolutely fell in love with this church. The entire place is huge, they have plenty of parking and tons of room for services; over crowding doesn't ever seem to be an issue for this congregation. Although I have yet to make it to a Sunday service, I will be back soon to do so, as this is definitely a place I can see myself bringing my family to on a regular basis :) read more

If I lived in Oakland, I would be there every Sunday. Pastor Dave is a great Communicator and the sermons are practical for everyday living. You won't be bored but really encouraged about your life. People who go to Sequoyah are friendly and easy to be around. People seem to be glad to be at church and there is a sense of peace in the room. You leave feeling refreshed and encouraged! If I lived in Oakland, I would make this my home church. Even though I don't live in Oakland I don't mind the two hour drive every now and again because I think this church has it going on. I've been at Sequoyah for about 1 1/2 years. Although I am not Pentecostal, it is my church home. My church family is warm, welcoming, and non-judgmental. The Pastors preach with passion. They know the Word so well that they are able to teach from the Bible in ways that are applicable to today's world--without changing the meaning of His Word. Services are interactive, and every Sunday I leave changed and am thankful for the various ministries that provide opportunities to fellowship throughout the week.
