I've never gotten a tattoo before, so after asking around, and talking to sweetie about the whole thing, I checked out Yelp, of course. This place was in my top three, and we moseyed in on a Friday evening. They weren't too busy, and Alison did a great job of translating our ideas into drawings. Then she walked me through the whole process, and I walked out without shedding any tears or blood (okay, a little blood.) The tattoo looks great and is healing well. Sweetie's is just perfect too. The place is clean, the staff is welcoming and full of amazing artists, and prices are reasonable. I don't have anything to compare it too so I hesitate to give it five stars ("as good as it gets,") but I am very happy with my experience. read more

Several people referred me to Brett. So let me sum up the first two visits - first - getting the appointment, talking the design. The second? Outline. So painful outline. Brett said he is fast and brutal - and he had a half-sleeve done in under sixty-minutes. I was bruised and sore - but I fucking love the outline (including the touch-up he did for a previous tattoo to fix a date). The third - coming up, the coloring. Brett has been awesome and friendly, and the rest of the staff has been cool and friendly - more so than other parlors I've been to. My sister and I walked in to Short North Tattoo for our first and matching tattoos in memorial of our dad..we had a coin for inspiration. The owner told us it would need to be at least 3x bigger than we hoped (thankful for advice) so after consideration, we decided to do it. We walked in the next day because an artist was available. When we described what we wanted, this artist was super condescending and arrogant. He did not make us feel comfortable and disregarded our insights and suggestions about a design that would be on our bodies forever. So with a bad feeling about him, we opted out. We went to High Street tattoo instead and got the ink and are incredibly happy with our tattoos. read more

I was referred to Brett when I was looking for an artist who was good with reworking existing tattoos. He is currently working on my entire sleeve that I was less than thrilled with. The initial consultation went better than expected and I was impressed that he hit the style I was going for right from the get go. Being that he is having to work with a piece that he had nothing to do with, the limitations that come with that and still be able to produce an amazing result is worth commending. I've had two sessions so far and can't believe how he's been able to salvage a washed out, dull, poorly planned tattoo and turn it into something I'm proud of. Sovereign Collective sets itself apart by being stylish and comfortable rather than contrived and intimidating. The space is clean and doubles as a gallery for emerging artist. Stopped in today for my artist consult and I must say I was impressed. I was greeted by not 1 or 2, but all three of the staffers there when I walked in the door. The space is open and bright and the art on the walls is eye-catching and fun. The tattoo area is clean and sterile. Everything is very well-organized. I met with Gorilla Gillum - as his card proclaims - and he took my reference art and morphed the concept and idea into something that I'm sure will turn out beautifully (I'll be sure to update when I see the final product). He incorporated not only my references and ideas, but also some really fantastic concepts I hadn't even considered. The price I was quoted was $100 an hour - which is more than fair and pretty much industry standard as far as I can tell from my 5 previous tattoo experiences. Finding a time to get my tattoo done around my weird work schedule and sleeping needs (Hello my fellow 3rd shifters!) was super easy since he pretty much let me dictate my needs to him. All-in-all, I'm very pleased with this first experience and look forward to updating you all when I'm done with my first session in a week. read more

I can't say enough good things about Drew Ray's approach to tattooing. Drew puts in time with me when I have an idea for a new tattoo, and works with me so that we're both happy with the outcome. He is conscientious throughout the tattooing process, and he's happy to answer questions. I knew I wanted a tattoo or tattoos geared towards healing/helping with my migraines, and Drew was eager to assist. When it comes to healing/meaning/remembrance, no one does it better. I was recommended Brett Prince through a friend and I can safely say that I am very happy with how my tattoo turned out. I sent him an initial concept that I whipped up in Photoshop and he came up with a truly exceptional custom piece. Across 3 sessions I always felt comfortable in the shop and enjoyed my time their. The have a large tv mounted on the wall and watching movies helps take the mind off the tattoo process. Tattoos should be looked at as an investment and I felt what I paid was more than fair given the quality of my finished product. Absolute worst experience. I've been getting tattooed for years now and did a lot of research when I moved to Columbus on where to get some work done. Looking at the artists work online, I thought it would be a great match. There was only one person there when I booked my apt, which I thought was weird but I decided to go anyway. Brett did my tattoo and I couldn't regret it any more. He was rude, cocky, and did not make me feel comfortable. Its a nice atmosphere but the people ruin it. He also charged me a lot more from the initial quote. They all seemed high, and I could smell the pot from the moment I walked in. Thank goodness that tattoo was small, but its getting covered up by someone who knows how to actually tattoo. Terrible place, would not recommend at all. read more

I had such a bad experience. Not only did they make fun of me for my tattoo choice, but they all stood around debating who would take it because it was so 'simple'. Once someone finally said they would take it, I asked him how he thought we could elevate the 'simple' tattoo and he laughed and said "fire, skulls" he wouldn't take me seriously, which I'm sure was not helped that I could smell booze on his breath. I asked for someone else to do my tattoo since he had clearly been drinking. Once the tattoo was finished, i noticed that it was not done correctly and now I have to wait for 2 months for it to heal and then go back and have it fixed. Avoid this place if you want a simple and easy tattoo. chose here for my first tattoo and all I wanted was a very simple and common cross. I didn't like how the tattoo artist refused to make the cross any skinnier than what he wanted, he was too lazy to make easy changes to a CROSS shape. Clean place. Staff is nice. Had a tattoo done by an artist there. I was pretty happy with it, but one of the colors needed to be retouched. When I tried to reach the artist at his website, he didn't respond so I called Short North Tattoo. They said he had since left the store. I asked if I could come in and have it retouched (I didn't say I wanted it free or if I'd pay). They conferred with someone off the phone then replied back that they wouldn't retouch someone else's tattoo. When I responded back that I had it done there, they said they still wouldn't do it. Went to get a tattoo behind my ear fixed the other day. Matt the owner was so helpful and friendly. He worked with me to make sure it turned out exactly what I wanted. He fixed the tattoo in less than an hour. I was embarrassed of my tattoo before coming here- I love it so much now! The place is much more inviting now after the remodel. Ben is great! As an out of town walk-in client, he treated me with kindness. While this is my second tattoo I am not an expert nor do I claim to be an artist. However, this is a tattoo I have wanted for several years. Ben took a few seconds to understand what I wanted then he drew up a sketch and told me he'd work on it and to come back later that evening. He doesn't know this, but I walked into the other shop right up the street and walked out pretty immediately after. I knew I was going to wait hours for Ben to do my tattoo! It turned out great. I decided on Short North Tattoo after visiting several other shops (High Street, Envy, etc) to get my current tattoo covered and to incorporate a portion of it into a new piece of artwork. This tattoo shop makes you feel comfortable the minute you walk in the door. I found Brett to be very receptive to my ideas as well as giving his own professional opinion on what would be end up with a good looking tattoo. I am trying to keep this as a short 1/2 sleeve in size so that it can not be seen at work. Of the places I visited he was the only one to agree to incorporate all my ideas as well as work with the space constraint. I was greeted by one of the other artists at the door who referred me to Brett as I would fall into his field of specialty. He was took my ideas and thoughts and improved them into a beautiful piece of artwork. The tattooing session was pleasant. They have a TV in front of the chair and play music. Overall it took about 4 hours and it felt more like hanging out at a friends house than getting a tattoo. I am very happy with the final product and the entire process. He was able to reproduce the idea in my head and make it even better. When I have my next idea for a tattoo I will be returning to Short North Tattoo. read more

I recently moved to the area and after doing some research, I decided to get a tattoo at Short North because of their positive reviews. I was not disappointed. I reached out to Ben Ervin at Short North after I saw his portfolio online because I liked his style. I sent him an email late in the evening and I had a response from him by the next morning. I had my tattoo scheduled later that week after visiting him at the shop and he was able to fit me in only a week later. I knew what I wanted my tattoo to be but I pretty much gave Ben the freedom to put my tattoo together because he is the artist, not me. When I showed up for the appointment, I was very pleased to see what drew up. It was much better that what I had pictured in my head. I didn't make any changes to his sketch at all. Ben was very quick and very friendly and I am very pleased at the end result. I will be going to see him again for my next tattoo. read more

My husband and I were in Columbus for the day and wanted to get matching tattoos, so we walked in to Short North Tattoo and spoke to an artist (Scott Sims) immediately. He told us that what we wanted was absolutely doable and told us to come back in a couple of hours when his appointment was over. At the appointed time we returned, and Scott drew up exactly what we wanted. My husband went first, but about halfway through another artist (Ben Ervin) became available and did my tattoo from Scott's drawing. The whole experience was wonderful, the guys (and everyone in the shop) were professional, kind, and very funny! We even wound up watching videos on youtube once the shop cleared out and that made the minor pain from the tattoo seem to fade. Scott was GREAT!! He was so great, I brought 2 friends to him the same day! The shop is very, very clean - I say that because I tainted the chair with my shoe (and then again with a book) and Scott immediately disinfected it. I wouldn't even give the shop one star, but I was forced to put something! I received HORRIBLE customer service from the shop owner after it was determined that my tattoo, perseverance, was SPELLED INCORRECTLY. I won't bore you with details, but I did have it spelled correctly and the tattoo artist assured me he spell-checked the word..no way did he do this! I trusted him, signed away his responsibility with the disclosure, got tatted and was on my merry way. The next day my friend mentioned that she thought my tat was spelled wrong, and indeed, it was. I called the shop, talked to the artist (and owner) and was APPALLED at the customer service I received. I was upset when I called, but was not screaming or cussing at all. He came at me from the beginning and took NO responsibility whatsoever. Told me it was ALL my fault and he didn't know what to tell me. When I tried to speak up, he talked over me, even cussed, and finally HUNG UP ON ME. I was, and still am speechless! Of course, these aren't all the details, but you get the picture. Needless to say, I went to another highly reputable shop here in town and received AMAZING service. The tat can be fixed and more importantly, the other shop told me that I should have never been treated the way I was, REGARDLESS, and that spelling things correctly is part of the service I paid for. Period. I was also told that word of mouth is important in the tattoo business, so I feel pretty sorry for Short North Tattoo. I have a big mouth and plan to let everyone know, including the State, BBB and local newspaper, just how awful of an experience I had with this shop! read more

This place was incredible. So modern and clean with new art on the wall every month. I personally didn't get a tattoo when we went, but my friend did and she adored the place and her tattoo artist, Matt Carlisle. He was so professional and drew amazing, clean lines and just did an incredible job. He was professional but not a robot, he was personable and chatted with us because we're a talkative group. The tattoos weren't cheap but I'm saying that in a good way: you're definitely getting what you pay for. The shop and experience was very clean, no concern for gross equipment or anything like that. He drew up designs until she had exactly what she wanted and talked her through fears of pain in the spots she wanted her tattoos. He was very detailed in the tattoo, making sure even the smallest of details were perfect. Honestly, could not ask for anything more in a tattoo artist. Book your appointment with him! read more

Lying, thieving, punk attitude. Did not give a written quote for a tattoo. Verbally committed to two payments a week apart. At the end of the second week an invoice arrives via PayPal for the balance due plus 20% interest. No mention of any penalty or interest was in any conversation, then to expect the interest to be applied to the original price, after 1/2 of it had been paid is bad math as well as bad business. Overpriced and unethical! At least have the decency to offer a written quote with the terms are before you start. A true professional would do so. Stay away unless you want your money wasted!! read more

Half of the staff is great, while the other half is terribly unprofessional and rude. And I mean rude as in, when people walk in asking questions (actually curious, and usually unexperienced), as soon as they leave they will be made fun for their absurd ideas and "stupidity". They will also make you feel like a complete idiot to your face about your ideas. I feel bad for a few of the guys who work there who seem genuinely cool. The work done here looks great, but their attitude toward the human race makes it not worth it. I guess it depends on what you're looking for, but if you are looking for an overall good experience, avoid it. There are many other genuinely talented tattoo artists out there in C-bus, and you can get some great ink without the attitude. read more

My girlfriend & me went to this shop to get tattoos, it was her first tattoo & I wanted her to have a good experience. We got there & show the guys what we wanted, one guy takes the tattoo to Scott & asked him if he wanted to do it & he was like "Meh, Ok", we saw & heard this. I feel that this artists should be a bit more excited when customers walk in the door & are about to ink something in their bodies forever & spend money while at it. We ignored his reaction but it bugged me a bit. When we came back to do our tattoos he has drawn the sketch & gave it to us to look at it, we liked it in the paper. I told him it was her first tattoo & to make it a special experience. He got ready & placed it on her & told her to wait 5 mins to dry, we kept looking at it but we didnt like it as much when it was on her (looked too small & in the wrong spot), so I went to the back & told him what we thought, he got annoyed about it & did the little "aughh". Thought that was pretty rude of him, we are customers that choose your shop over others & come here to spend money & we expect to be treated well. It is your job to be patience & flexible, specially when you are about to put something permanent on somebody's body. I once again ignored him because I didnt want my gf to have a bad experience, but thought that was pretty unprofessional of him, specially after I told him to please make her first tattoo experience a special one. Once he start tattooing her then he was cool & I let it go. Then it was my turn, he drew mine, and again I liked it in the paper, but once he put it on me it was too small, at this point I was nervous to ask him to make it bigger because of his previous reaction, but I told myself that that was his job and that I was paying $75 for a three letter word (way too expensive), I have had tattoos done with 5-6 letters that had cost me $40-$50. This was another bad thing about this shop...Way too over price. Once Scott finished our tattoos he was nice & gave us a lot of information for aftercare, he was a good tattoo artist, just wish he would have been more patience & nice with our experience there, it is not like we asked him to re-do the sketch 8 times, it was only one time. Well that was my first impression of the shop. The shop itself was nice & very clean. But left with not the best experience. What really got me to NO want to come back to this shop was the rude guy that was working on the door sign on monday August 18th. I left my phone charger that saturday in this shop, I noticed this on sunday & tried to call the shop but they close on sundays. I went to their web page & the schedule said they open from monday to saturday...I called all day on monday & nobody answered. I was leaving that monday night to go back to Atlanta & needed my charger back so I drove to the shop, I saw a guy working inside & I knocked on the door...he immediately yelled "Im busy, we are closed", I just needed my charger so I just stayed there. He finally saw that I wasnt leaving & opened the door, I told him I was sorry to bother him but I just needed my charger that I have left here on saturday, without moving from the door he looked around & said "I dont see it & Im pretty busy" with a little attitude, I stayed there & he was like "you need to come back tomorrow", I told him I was leaving that night to Atlanta & he said "like I said Im pretty busy right now, Im doing this sign in the door & I cant look for your charger right now"....RUUUDDDEEE, it would have taken you not more than one minute to go look for it. I went back to Atlanta without my charger because he couldnt take a min to go look for it, but it is okay I guess, I lost a charger but you guys lost clients. read more

I got my only 2 tattoos done at Short North Tattoo and I had a great experience both times. The first time was with Alison Reber (I'm not sure if she is still there) and the second time with Evan English. Both artists were great: clean, knowledgeable, courteous and creative. I felt comfortable the entire time I was there and was blown away by both tattoos. For both tattoos, I met with the artist 1-3 weeks ahead of time to discuss concept. I also emailed the artists images that I liked (for Alison I sent a simplistic design that I drew and for Evan I sent a picture of a design I liked). Using this information, the artists constructed their own design that captured the concept I wanted while incorporating their own artistry. Then I went back to get the tattoo done; the artist showed me the design, made adjustments based on my final input, and then tattooed me. I was really happy with the entire process and the overall result. Both artists were great about explaining the process and Evan was nice about allowing me to reschedule my appointment. The only (minor) complaint I have is with the inconsistency of rates - I understand that each artist works like an independent contractor but the variation in charges is still frustrating; in the end, Alison charged me (not including tip) $150 for a tattoo that took 2 hours to do while Evan ended up charging me (not including tip) $200 for a tattoo that took just under an 1 hour. Despite this, I am really happy with the tattoos and glad I got them done in a clean/safe environment with such amazing artists...so I would this complaint is negligible but worth mentioning imo. read more

I went to Short North Tattoo after reading the reviews online and hearing good things from former customers. I was looking for a quality artist to fix a tattoo on my foot that looked terrible. I was worried I'd be stuck with the terrible ink. But, Josh K. worked a miracle. He met with me twice beforehand and listened to exactly what I hated about the bad tattoo. He showed me his portfolio and let me show him some things I liked. I was thrilled when he said he could rework it based on ideas I had and he brought some wonderful ideas to the table that I wouldn't have thought of! The new tattoo hurt (I am the first to admit that I have a low pain threshold!) But Josh was awesome and let me takes as many breaks as I needed until it was done. And the finished product is amazing. I am thrilled beyond words. Thank you to Josh! On top of all that, all the guys at the shop are polite, funny, and welcoming and the place is spotless. If you're looking for a great place full of quality artists this is the place for you! read more
