The fundamental problem is that this has always been a museum nobody asked for in a location that would be better used for something more useful to the OSU community in a poorly planned building named after a person who is probably not a point of pride for the school and whose contribution cannot possibly have covered even a fraction of what it's cost to keep the place up over the years. Other than that, it's great. Seriously, though - if you're visiting columbus and want to see an art museum, the downtown one is the way to go, or their short north outpost if you're into contemporary art. If you're visiting Ohio State and want to see exhibits about what they do there, there are nice ones in the library and scattered across the various department buildings. I don't know what the future holds for this place...but they better figure something out before they go the way of Mean Mr. Mustard's.

The current exhibits of modern art were abstract, and I found some of them a little challenging to understand. Nonetheless, I am glad this center exists and I do appreciate art in all its forms. Staff was very friendly and they have a cool gift shop with items you will likely not find anywhere else.

When it came to the painting, they had everything that you would need to paint. You just need to show up. The staff gave easy instructions to help you create your own masterpiece and went around to help anyone that needed extra help. The murals on the outside are great, too. I'm sure they will be glad when the construction across the street is done, but in the meantime parking can be a bit confusing due to lack of signage about where it's legal. But keep supporting them in the meantime - we need more spaces like this!

I came a little past 1 on a Saturday for an exhibition and it was only us and a volunteer and an intern. They said that they typically don't get many people here unless they have a huge event in which the artist brings their friends to the reception. Still, I wish more people knew about it. They do events here once a month and have an annual festival in early September! Be sure to follow their Instagram and Facebook for more updates! It's volunteer-run, so if you're interested in helping them out they welcome it! They had a few appetizers out, coffee, and juice. The juice was very refreshing! There are a few murals around it and on the building itself. There's a parking lot to the right of it that I think is theirs or you can do street parking on Starr Ave. I'm coming back again next month!

I've found a lot of Spanish art here and even some Israeli art. One of Kathryn's signature artists is Jaline Pol, a well-cultured French artist. She paints big, globby flowers. She's really good. I don't think she uses any brushes, just a palette knife. I saw her stuff in another high end gallery on a recent Chicago trip. I recognized her immediately. That's one of the key requirements of great art: a recognizable style. Her color palette is also very bright and upbeat. Most of the pieces at Kathryn Gallery are landscape oils. But there are also sculptures. The sculptures tend to have a circular-motion feel, if that makes sense. Even the stickman types are bending into a sphere, making them appear voluminous. For nearly a year, Kathryn Gallery has also been showing these vibrant swirled pitchers that look like something you'd see in Fantasia. They have leaves and lily pistils placed in offbeat places. I don't know what you'd do with something like that, but they're fun to look at for a few minutes while you're visiting. I love Kathryn Gallery's location. It's at the south end of the district near a bunch of other galleries. It's on a corner, so it has all these display windows that are very alluring from the outside, but they also provide a bunch of natural light inside the gallery. I do wish the art changed more rapidly. Sometimes they have the same stuff in there for what seems like months. They don't have exhibits like, say OAL. But they do put pieces in the closet and bring them back out six months later. They do, of course, also get new stock. If you go, I have two suggestions. One, fill your pockets with some of the chocolate from the candy dish near the entrance. Two, go all the way to the back under the exit sign; there's a closet/hallway back there filled with more art.

One of my favorite shows possibly ever in Columbus just ended at Sherrie Gallerie. I walked past one day to see these horridly fascinating human heads. In no time, I was inside, standing face-to-face with the creatures and studying the precision and craftsmanship of their teeth and skin. The heads, created by 'ceramicist' Tom Bartel, were dually nightmarish and comical. I have since become a huge fan of his macabre style. That's the beauty of Sherrie Gallerie. Sherrie brings the best work to Columbus, and people leave the gallery with curiosity. Sherrie leaves you wanting more. It's fantastic! Another awesome show from mid-summer: Problems in Sailing by John Balistreri. Seriously people, if you're the least bit into ceramics, check this place out. Balistreri had these huge pieces in the windows. They looked like planes that had crashed into the gallery floor. Oh, and the most alluring show of them all was a couple years ago. Sherrie had crayon installations by Christian Faur. They were large scale, and the premise was similar to that of a Lite-Brite but with a tinge of Holocaust sadness. The Christian Faur show was my deciding factor; right then, I knew I needed to move to Columbus.

I find that Studios On High has a female slant. Many of the artists are women, many of the themes in the work deal with femininity, and much of the work is aimed (in my opinion) at female buyers. A lot of the art features animals and nature as well. I most appreciate Studios On High for its history as a Columbus gallery; it's been around since the mid-1980s. Many of the artists who leave end up opening their own galleries, case in point, Jeff Hersey of Terra Gallery. If you visit, you'll catch a handful of the artists in the studio; sometimes they're in the process of creating something, or perhaps they're just knitting. The artists are very inviting and don't mind if you hang around to watch them work. My favorite pieces at Studios On High are always the blown glass vessels by husband and wife duo Scott Conover and Lisa Horkin. The tiny vessels are so colorful, and they all have great shapes. I saw Scott and Lisa last summer making the vessels on High St at a Gallery Hop. They also make bowels and vases. The colored pencil drawings by Rhonda Bartoe Tuckers are also phenomenal. They are so smooth that they look like they were painted. Since Studios On High is a collective, there's all kinds of art to be seen (in all kinds of genres): prints, paintings, jewelry, sculptures, paintings, drawings, knits, glass, ceramics, etc. The artwork changes often.

It seemed like a strange location, under a bridge, just across from the Parking Solutions office. This is definitely a female bent establishment. The themes were all about femininity and trees. The art was okay. It definitely wasn't bad, but I don't think it was all the way there yet. I didn't see one piece that I downright enjoyed or that drew on any kind of emotion. There was a piece with a girl and some eggplants. I thought that was skillfully done, and I contemplated the meaning for a while. It held my attention, but it's not something I would want to own. There were also some aviator statues with no arms, but, once again, they were just almost there. The gallery is large though, and it's very inviting. They seem to represent a lot of artists. They have two locations, and they just celebrated their 10 year anniversary. The curator was there, and she was helpful and friendly - almost too helpful and friendly. She asked us how we were doing three times. I wasn't sure if she was suspicious, if she wanted us to leave, or if she just thought we really looked like we needed help. My favorite part of A Muse was the shop dog, shadow. He looked like an aging Great Dane/Black Lab mix. There were two love birds in the office, literal love birds. They were very chirpy. If you go, be sure to go back to the office because there's more art for show back there.

It takes something special to catch my eye, and it happened that a recent erotica show captured my interest. The space was small, like most of the surrounding architecture, but modern and airy. Each of the pieces were well-lit, thanks to large windows and carefully placed artificial light, and the art was thought-provoking. The interior is split among two rooms, which feels awkward at first, but lends itself to a comfortable meandering. Their featured artist Chas Ray Krider was present, and he was kind enough walk us through some of his work. It was a real treat, and shed some light on the subject matter and his creative process. I didn't find the location to be remote, it was full of viewers on our Sunday visit, and my husband and I had a nice lunch afterwards at the neighboring Brown Bag Deli. I also didn't find the curator overly friendly - personable and polite, yes, but certainly not pushy. If you're looking for an artistic afternoon in German Village, the Muse Gallery provides. But you might want to check the exhibit's theme before you visit.

The paintings feature many colorful landscape and still-life scenes. The gallery is stylized to reflect a home. The idea is that it will make the white walls less sterile, making it easier for shoppers to envision the pieces in their own homes. Amongst artists exhibited in the gallery is Daniel Ferlan, whose works were named in the "Best Visual Arts Events" article in The Columbus Dispatch; Sharon proudly displays the article in her storefront window. Personally, I love Daniel's stuff: big-headed children running traveling through nightmare fairytales. I'm big on oxymorons. On special Gallery Hops, if you manage to make it around the swarm of people waiting in line at Jeni's Ice Creams and down E Lincoln St, you'll see artists, maybe a painter or a potter, making art in Sharon's window. The man behind the counter was so polite and welcoming that he offered to let us play the drum set inside the gallery. I passed because it's been a long time and didn't want to embarrass myself. He told me on a Saturday, forgot the date, that there is a gallery showing. I need to go back because the art there and the music playing was fun enough to stay. I could just imagine when it's packed. Definitely stop by and say hi and look around. You'll love the place!

After a long search to find a new tattoo artist after relocating twice in 7 years, I was referred to J. Brett Prince and Short North Tattoo's through a mutual acquaintance who was familiar with local artists and the style I was looking for. I was looking for an artist to complete a sleeve I had started 7 years prior, and had been having no such luck. The artists I had contacted would either not return messages, were too busy to even consult with me, and one even flat out said "I would be unable to make it my own piece of art work" and refused to work on it. After going through his portfolio online, I could tell he worked in the style I was searching for. Unsure if he would be willing to complete a sleeve that was about 40-50% complete, I contacted Brett through email first. I sent pictures of the current state of the tattoo, some background on the work done previously, and a quick write up of what I was hoping to accomplish. Brett responded within 24 hours and invited me to the shop to do a consult in person and assured me that he would be able to give me what I was looking for. First impressions with a tattoo shop are extremely important. The shop is immaculately clean and located in a beautiful part of the Short North. Parking is plentiful around the shop, and there is plenty of local shops nearby if you have people with you during your session. The staff couldn't be more welcoming from the minute you walk in the door and couldn't be more entertaining the entire time you have work done. They also feature and sell local artist's work so you can see some amazing art work as well. My original consult was a 15 minute meeting in early December 2013 where he took a look at what was already done, snapped a few pictures of my arm, and wrote down some of the ideas we had discussed. Brett was able to intelligently discuss the work he thought needed done to enhance the work already there and complete the rest with our vision. He more than exceeded my expectations on what I was hoping for. I walked out of the consult with my first appointment scheduled and had no worries about Brett being able to finish my sleeve and make it the masterpiece I envisioned. 11 months and 20-25 hours worth of work later, Brett has completed my sleeve and words can't express how happy I am with the work. Brett is a hard worker, punctual, a great conversationalist, and probably one of the best damn tattoo artists in Ohio (if not the US). Brett is a great guy, and really makes you feel that it's HIS TATTOO just as much as YOUR TATTOO. I really can't recommend Brett or Short North Tattoo's highly enough, but I can tell you when it's time for my next piece there is no question where I will be going to! read more

I very rarely decide to write reviews but after the service and work I received these past couple of weeks from Jacob Brentzel I felt it was imperative to share! So last week came into the Short North Tattoo shop to get a traditional-style suitcase done and had the fortune of having Jacob come up with an idea. I was very open minded in letting Jacob put whatever he wanted on the tattoo with only one thing I wanted to keep specific to the original design and it was absolutely beautiful! While getting it done, Jacob and I got into the conversations of whom are favorite artists are and our interest in fine art. I mentioned my interest with Frida Kahlo and showed him a portrait that I had saved from a year ago and he immediately showed interest and was in love with it and told me he HAD to do it on me. I had no intention of getting it done recently but after much consideration and respect for Jacob's artistry, I decided I would give it a go. Fast forward a week and I was back in the chair for another session. Man, I am so glad I decided to let Jacob to do the portrait. Initially we hadn't intended to change the original idea but throughout the week Jacob contacted me and informed of some things he had come up with from a photo he had saved on a previous Frida piece he'd seen. In the middle of our session, Jacob informed me that he wanted to try some water color and some texture throughout the piece and he made me feel so comfortable with it that I gave him complete control over my tattoo again. Needless to say, it was absolutely beautiful. I am so content and incredibly happy with Jacob's work that I intend on returning for my next portrait. Horrible customer service!!!!! Several months ago my gf and I got similiar (very small) tattoos on our wrists. Mine healed up great, hers did not. We stopped in to see if the tattoo can be touched up (the whole tattoo took 10 min therefore we thought touch up wouldn't be a problem). Brett Prince who helped us in the first place came out to speak with us/take a look and instantly got deffensive. He said that this has NEVER happened to him before and that it had to be our fault. We really were shocked by the reaction as some tattoos just don't heal well and WE WERE NOT blaming him and just asked for a simple touch up. He acted like he was 12 years old and got mad at us. He refused to fix it on the spot and for 15 minutes was flipping through his Ipad calendar to find a date to "fit us in" (let me remind you the tat took 10 min to complete in the first place). He scheduled us 3.5 months in advance (!!!!!!) claming he was sooooooo busy he didn't have time to fix it. 3.5 months passed and the day finally came. He had one of his staff call 3 hours before our appointment time to say he was running late and needs to cancel. I'm curious to know how he knew that he would be running so damn late 3 hours in advance. All we wanted was a simple touch up and istead we got a grumpy childish man giving us an attitude and treating us like s**t. Not cool. read more

What a top notch tattoo shop!!! I have been collecting tattoos for years now, and I have rarely had such a positive experience as I had at Short North Tattoo. I was referred by a friend who is a client of J.Brett Prince. I stopped in the shop and was blown away by every artist there! I ended up choosing Adam Fox because of his soft, realistic style. I couldn't be happier with the tattoo! Adam is a very personable guy, easy to get along with, and made me feel confident during the whole process. The shop is very relaxing and comfortable too. I looked at the numerous paintings while Adam set up, and was able to watch movies on the big screen during the tattoo, which really helped take my mind off the pain. First let me start off by saying that this is an AWESOME shop. It is such a good environment from the paintings when you walk in, to the great customer service, to the music and movies they put on. I was recommended by a friend to Brett. He's an awesome artist, and even a better person. He's very generous, flexible, and doesn't ask for a deposit. There were many times i was scheduled to come in and i called and told him i couldnt because of how busy i usually get. Which made me appreciate him even more for all the delays i had put him through. Every time i walked in i was never mistreated, I was well respected and treated them the same. I LOVE Short North Tattoo. I felt comfortable from the moment I walked in the door. The whole place is extremely neat and clean and everyone is so friendly. Especially Jacob Brentzel, who is my tattoo artist. I went in for one tattoo yesterday and ended up enjoying myself so much I decided to get two more small ones! It had been a while since I had a tattoo so I was pretty nervous about the whole thing, but Jacob made it SO easy and fun. I had a wonderful time conversing with him and it really helped to distract me. The piece itself turned out better than I could have ever imagined. I had an idea of what I wanted going into it and Jacob brought that idea to life! I will definitely be back to see him again. I have had nothing but GREAT experiences at Short North Tattoo! The shop is huge. They have art on the walls to view and to purchase. They also are apart of the gallery hop that happens every month and random artist will have their work on display. The booths are spacious and they have big screen Tvs on the wall for your viewing pleasure. The artist there are all down to earth and will work with you so you have a great experience. All my work is done by Brett. He has done both my legs, my arms, torso, back and is the only artist I trust to do my work. His work is outstanding just like his personality. i first got tattooed by Brett in 2003 and he's been doing my ink ever since. he's always shot me straight even if it meant telling me something i really didn't want to hear.that may be misinterpreted as rude or cocky but in the end he has always been looking out for my best interest. to see how far he's come in just a few short years is nothing short of amazing. In my experience in getting tattooed, this is by far the most professional, clean, artistic shop around. I would recommend this shop and its artists to anyone. The artists walk you through every tattoo, and all of them are very versatile in their work and will definitely inform you if one artist may specialize in one area as opposed to another. Brett Prince has done most of my tattoos, and after the first one I have always come back. You want someone with experience, professionalism and who is an incredible artist, go see brett, you wont regret it!!! From the moment I walk in I noticed how professional the entire place was. Artwork was displayed all over the shop, the whole place was clean and open and inviting, the staff was always friendly and helpful, and the mood was always super relaxed and fun. The thing I was most impressed about was the thoroughness of the artists with cleanliness. They open every package in front of you and always change gloves to ensure safety from infection. They also have a detailed contract that protects both the customer and the shop for safety and always strives to perfect their work to give the best quality service. Of course going to get my first Tattoo (but not last) i was a bit nervous. This place is incredibly chill, calming and great atmosphere. Matt is an Amazing artist that came recommended to me from a friend in NYC (where I Live) and I felt the need after seeing some of his work to get a tattoo by him. My sister had Evan as her artist and both of us could not stop talking about how kind and comforting both were to ease our nerves. Amazing shop! Extremely clean!Highly recommend Matt and Evan. My initial consultation with Brett Prince went quite well; I found we had similar thoughts regarding styles. We talked about what I wanted and Brett gave me his recommendations and we went to work. This is a terrific tattoo studio with some great people working here. Upon first entering it would appear to be your usual short north art gallery until you hear the faint buzzing of a tattoo gun and people laughing behind the display wall. I came here a boy, and left a more badass boy. Jarrett Ward has the most god smacking skills you're ever gunna lay your doggon eyes on. Fuck those other artists, cause this is the only place you'll ever get this quality of work. After getting tattooed here you'll feel better than a homeless person with a fresh bag of meth. So today I got my first tattoo by Adam Fox and it looks great. Walked in and got the tattoo done in about 25 or 30 minutes (just a little saying on my inner bicep). Adam is a great person and a great tattoo artist. He listened when I wanted to change the font and totally understood the way I wanted the tattoo to look. Great studio also. Ben did my tattoo and I am super happy with the line work and with how clear and bold it is. On a whim I made it down to short north tattoo to see if any appointments would be available that day for my first tattoo. To my surprise they were able to get me right in with Scott. The whole experience was fantastic. Scott allowed me to tweak my idea to match every detail I wanted. I've had three experiences at the Short North Tattoo shop and all have been great! Two with Gorilla G. who is professional, creative and one hell of an artist. The atmosphere is relaxing as well as inviting from an art gallery perspective. I was referred here by several co-workers. The entire business is very clean from top to bottom. The staff was friendly and easy-going, great atmosphere! My tattoo was done by Scott Sims and he did a fantastic job! He took my idea and created it exactly the way I imagined it. It looks great! I have 3 other tattoos from different places but I had looked through the social media of this place and I I really loved their work. And I wanted a fairly simple design- a rose, on my shoulder. Given that I had seen several roses on their IG and I loved all of them, I thought, why not- let's give it a go. The lady at the front desk assigned me to an artist. He was running an errand, but as soon as he came back, he met with me. I'm going to pause here and say that as a caveat- I absolutely love my tattoo that I had done that day and the artist turned out to be a real sweetie pie and I absolutely would go back here to get a tattoo. But I do have some constructive criticism for the man who tattoo'd me. He was kind of quick to do the consultation. I showed him a pic for inspiration for the color and a couple of others for the shape and design. He came back roughly an hour later with a shape that was not at all what I asked for and he seemed kind of agitated when I told him it wasn't really what I was looking for. I felt really bad because this had taken him so long to do and I would be frustrated too. Just as a bit of advice- it would probably be helpful if you have the client message you the pics for inspiration to your instagram or email so you can reference as you are in the back doing your sketches. He went back to do another sketch and it took another hour. I had arrived at the shop pretty much at opening (12 pm) and we didn't get started on my tattoo until 2:30. He warmed up to me and was kind once the tattoo'ing started but it kind of made me feel like he just didn't like me and maybe didn't want to do this tattoo or something and I felt kind of awkward. I'm just writing this to hopefully help the artist with his consultations and bedside manner. He was a very gentle tattoo'er. A good artist. If he was having a bad day or something- I totally get it. We are all human. And I'm not writing any of this to be mean. Just hopefully helpful. Again, I do recommend this place and will be going back myself. It may have been an off day. But my experience could have been better.

She handed me my paperwork (a very straightforward, standard form - allergies, have you eaten, DOB, etc) and immediately told us to help ourselves to free drinks and snacks. This was an immediate green flag, because having a high enough blood sugar is so important when getting a tattoo, but I've never been in or heard of another studio that has these for free. (1st tattoo for myself, but I've accompanied a lot of friends.) The seating area also has plenty of room and lots of books to keep yourself occupied. Tattoo books, magazines, even a coloring book. They have some art and apparel for sale as well. As for the tattoo, I got an apprentice tattoo from Taylor (@taysartz). I followed her and loved her art before she started accepting clients, so I was so excited when she open her books. We chatted on Instagram beforehand, and she is so so sweet and receptive to my beginner questions. I think her tattoos are soo good, and it's crazy to me that she's just a beginner. (I was her 13th tattoo!) I got a tattoo from her flash book and am so so happy with how it turned out - just like the design! The conversation flowed naturally and the silence in between was very comfortable. Since I got a tattoo on my hip, she even offered to put up a barrier for more privacy if I preferred. She checked in regularly to see if I wanted a break or a snack and if I had any feedback on the tattoo. I'm honestly ecstatic, the tattoo is so perfect and cute; Taylor really did such a great job In addition to the free snacks and drink, they give you an aftercare goodie bag with soap for after you remove the "second skin," ointment, a reusable ice pack, and a piece of candy. They thoroughly explain the aftercare process as well. I highly recommend this studio and Taylor; we had such a positive and comfortable experience. :)

Along the way, Mike & Kat spoke with me, to me, about movies, books, bourbon, music, and explained some of the art and photos in their really, really unique studio. My first session had me discovering a B&W photo of Richmond, Virginia just post-Civil War. Totally destroyed but with a Greek columned building standing. Because Caduceus is a Greek symbol, we talked about the South, the war and loads of other things. Kat and I talked energy, foods, places we've lived and want to see, Short North pubs and bars, dreams and a truck load of other things.... while she calmly placed herself, her work, onto my living canvas. Loved it all. Spiritus is an experience, a great experience. Mike & Kat "got it going on" and should help experienced and/or newbies who wants style and soul built into their passion for a tattoo. I couldn't find anything on the interwebs that really conveyed what I wanted it to. I found artist Chris Barton on Instagram and after following him for a while I decided that his style was something I loved and that I though would suit the piece well. We emailed back and forth a few times with a pretty vague description of what I was hoping for, and I had to set my appointment out 8 weeks in advance (they were busy, a great sign!). I didn't see the sketch until I arrived which worried me a bit, but all my fears were calmed the minute I looked at it! I explained my concerns with past tattoo artists who had heavy hands, causing some scarring underneath the tattoo. As someone with darker skin, this is a real concern! He took his time, paid attention to every single detail, and the result was perfect. You could see the artists around the studio were all extremely dedicated to their crafts and styles, and that's why I still sing their praises though I haven't gotten any more tattoos since then. Worth it!!

The artist was friendly and explained to me fully every step he was taking to ensure the piece was just right--very professional. I am beyond satisfied with how the tattoo turned out and if I ever visit Columbus again I will return for another piece. Also, incredibly reasonable pricing for how satisfied I am with the experience.
