Once every blue moon, I must leave my hibernation cave and look presentable for an important event. The kind that requires more than just washing my face...and maybe brushing my hair. This event was one of my closest friend's weddings where I was also going to be giving a speech. No wallflower girl or invisibility cloak will help this girl, except for a makeup artist guru. Trying to find a good makeup artist is fairly easy I feel. But finding a great makeup artist who really knows how to bring out all the best of one's feature...that's a feat. Thank goodness for Cherry of Sessions Makeup. Cherry was recommended to me by a dear family friend. My friend told me she knows I will love Cherry. If this review looks too long, this is the TLDR version: Cherry is a phenomenal makeup artist, a guru, who knows how to bring out the best features in people through her art, and her energy is magical. Have faith in her skills and know one will walk away in the end feeling beautiful and confident. Here's my longer review: I hesitated to make an appointment, only because I am not one to have my makeup done professionally, and it was just nerve wrecking, especially for someone who is makeup-illiterate and also has low confidence. My brain would say: "how could any makeup possibly fix something that is not pretty nor beautiful?" Eventually panicking as my friend's wedding approached, and knowing I wasn't going to become makeup literate in less than a week, I scheduled an appointment with Cherry. I appreciate so much how organized Cherry is from the start with the appointment time, location information, and deposit information. I knew exactly what to expect, because I even asked her follow up questions about the makeup session. From the moment I stepped into Cherry's studio, the energy of her joy, passion, enthusiasm, love for her craft, and infectious laughter was lovingly contagious. Cherry is so compassionate, warm, and has a way of making one feel completely at ease, and to put fear aside and trust Cherry and her process. Did I also mention how genuine and kind she is too! I let Cherry know the wedding was going to be outdoors, and despite the ceremony being in the evening, it was one of the hottest days of the summer in Orange County, CA. Cherry listened to my concern and told me not to worry if I was afraid that my makeup would melt. She said the makeup would actually do just fine and be dewy, in the good kind of way, if I did sweat. Cherry then proceeded to ask me what kind of makeup I wanted. I told Cherry that all I knew was that I loved the winged liner look and for her to highlight my eyes. Everything else, I told her to do her magic and gave her free creative reign. Cherry definitely has all the skills and talent up her sleeves. She is meticulous and pays attention to detail. She is also a perfectionist, in a good way. Several times I teared up as she was applying my liner, and that's because I am super sensitive to eye liner, but also at the time, I was suffering from allergies, hence the watery eyes also didn't help. Cherry fixed my eyes constantly because the tears would mess them up. As soon as she was able to get my eyes to dry completely with a little fan, she nailed the winged liner look I wanted, and made it infinitely better with what she called a "soft winged liner". Cherry took her time applying foundation and all the other amazing makeup tools in her arsenal of weapons. At the end of the session, I actually walked away feeling so beautiful, so glamorous, and yet knew it was still me staring back from the mirror. That night and in the pictures, I received so many kind compliments about my makeup. Many of my friends told me my makeup was glamorous and also natural, which is the best kind of compliment. And the real test too...my makeup was still PERFECT 11 hours later. My makeup withstood emotional crying at the wedding, sweating through the heat, and yet at the end of the day, my face remained flawless. Cherry's price is also reasonable. From what I know as of July 2024, the price for professional makeup in Orange County, CA ranges from $100-$250. With that being said, I would 10/10 recommend Cherry in a heartbeat, especially for those who need to look flawless and beautiful for any special occasion. Reviews of wedding services: Oh my word! Cherry Sessions of Sessions Makeup is absolutely one of the most consumate professionals I have ever worked with. A hundred years ago I was a swimsuit model and dealt with lots of makeup artists. Cherry is top of the top. I hired her for my wedding, which was a smaller beach wedding that we put together in about 5 weeks (please see my other reviews for all the services we used). The outcome was gorgeous- and Cherry was a major part of making it so. Although our wedding was an impromptu and less formal affair, I still wanted a some very high quality services such as hair, makeup, flowers & food. After lots of research I found Sessions Makeup on Yelp and looked at Cherry's work and who she works with. She kicks butt for national pageant contestants, she works on professional models as well as brides and the like. Everyone she does looks beautiful and flawless. Her makeup is matched and perfect to the face. Sessions Makeup is not inexpensive, however, for a quality professional that is what you do. We started off with the test makeup, I had photos of what I thought I wanted but it ended up looking too heavy & dark. We worked around and played with it for a little bit and we came up up with a beautiful palette. Her skills are amazing. It is easy and fun interacting with Cherry as she was so aware of my thought process and my evolving vision. In the couple of weeks before my day, Cherry checked in with me several times, helping me to prepare. "Get some little eye gel patches" she said, "and put them on your eyes on the morning of the event". I forgot and she had them and did it for me. "Drink lots of water and get some good sleep" she said. Things that you'd think you would remember to do, but with everything going on I didn't and to have her in the background coaxing me along was simply wonderful. The wedding plans were fluid with regards to location and time until I was able to lock things in, and Cherry was always available to talk or text and she worked with me easily so it flowed well. The morning of my wedding I was setting up flowers and table cloths, and napkins at Pete's and of course it always takes longer than you think. We had planned to start at 9 I couldn't get back to the suite until 9:20, so Cherry had gone and set up everything beautifully. She had relaxing music on so when I came back, I fell into a state of calm and happy. I sat back in the directors chair that she brought, and let her do her magic. Now, aside from all her excellent work and talent. She possesses a true and unfettered demeanor and handled herself like an absolute pro regarding what happened with my hair stylist. My hairstylist, (and again, please read the review) was absolutely insane. I have been going to her for years which made us friends, but that makes no difference when someone is hired to do a job. She blew in late like a tornado, with crap falling all over out of her bins, not dressed, no make up on and swearing and carrying on about some one in her family. Then she had the nerve to come up to Cherry and ask her if she if she really wanted to use that particular make up for whatever Cherry was doing on my eyes at the moment. I would've liked to bite her but Cherry handled it so eloquently, and kindly, she simply said "Oh, it's waterproof" and turned up the music louder and said "Breathe my bride, breathe" and she had me back in a good place. I hired Cherry to do my hair and makeup before my wedding, as well as my bridesmaids', my mom's, and my then-fiancé's mom's. I booked her about 10 months in advance. I immediately noticed how professional she was: she responded to my emails both quickly and thoroughly--there is little I hate more than replies that only address some of the points in the original email. I also appreciated her integrity: she advised me that, for my purposes, I probably didn't need airbrushed makeup, even though she could have charged me hundreds more if I'd chosen airbrushing. I also saw several signs that assured me of her experience. For example, she requires her brides to do a makeup trial, to plan in advance what the makeup and hair will look like. When I heard that, I thought, "This is a person who has dealt with *people.*" I can imagine a makeup artist might start requiring trials after working with indecisive or dissatisfied brides on the day-of. The trial was productive, too: Cherry asked me tons of questions about my makeup preferences, and though I consider myself a decisive person who is conversational in makeup, many of her questions had never occurred to me prior to that moment. It was reassuring to leave knowing exactly what my makeup and hair would look like. I also learned a lot of random makeup tips from Cherry. For example, she instructed me to come to the trial with a clean, moisturized face, which I totally did; but even though I had washed my face that morning, she could still tell that I'd used an eye mask the night before because of the way the makeup was sitting (or not sitting) under my eyes. Or, that she generally does the bride's makeup slightly heavier than the bridal party's makeup, and if the bride's hair is in an updo she will put the bridesmaids' hair down (or vice versa), in order to make the bride stand out. She also had me observe the way my makeup changed throughout the day, after the trial, and to collect people's feedback. And on the day-of, she was right on time at 7:00 A.M. She also brought Yen with her, since we needed to do 7 people's makeup. They were both so sweet and easy to be around, which is good because they were there for at least 6 hours. They did the bridesmaids' makeup and hair first, then the mothers', and mine last. Then they did touch-ups to the bridesmaids and mothers. Some of my bridesmaids were a little disappointed that Cherry and Yen did not replicate the hair and makeup examples from their own Instagram; and while that may be the case, I still thought my bridesmaids looked beautiful. Finally, I loved the way my makeup and hair, and my bridal party's and moms' makeup and hair, looked on my wedding day and in the subsequent photos. Everyone's makeup looked so natural and peachy, which they preferred; and mine was a little bolder, which *I* preferred for my own wedding day. As far as I could tell, everyone's hair and makeup stayed in place the whole day and night. I didn't get cakey or greasy, and my eye makeup didn't smudge! And she did an excellent job hiding a pimple that popped up on my face literally the night before the wedding (Cherry says that is common). Cherry also does photography, and will do the makeup and photography for boudoir shoots. She showed me photos and they're a really cute pin-up style. I got married about 3 weeks ago and Cherry did my hair and makeup. She also did my bridesmaids' makeup. I was very happy with the way it turned out. Both my makeup and hair lasted the entire day with little to no touch up needed. I also thought my bridesmaids' looked amazing. Where do I begin. I just got married last weekend and Cherry did our hair and makeup. Usually when people check reviews, they wonder, would these people leaving reviews every hire them again? Well, I can definitely say that I would hire Cherry again. Cherry also did hair and makeup for my first wedding over 15 years ago. A super overdue review!!! Here's a list of my pros and cons, based on my experiences. Since I've used Sessions Makeup and Cherry on at least 3 separate occasions, it's about time I paid back the love. (FYI: The types of looks I've booked her for were: Photoshoot, similar to a wedding/engagement shoot; Pinup/40s; Pageant.) PROS: Cherry is full service. She does have a salon in the OC, but she will come to you. She's a mini hurricane of magic, not only for makeup, but hair. She literally brings a studio complete with makeup chair all by herself. And then transforms you. Amazing. She waits! Any event or shoot I've been on that she was able to travel to, she stuck around to do touch ups. I've only experienced that twice, and it's amazing when the artist makes sure you look good for the entire 4-5 hour event. She's definitely a perfectionist when it comes to her work. She also assisted backstage for the pageant with all my quick changes (from full ball gown to swimsuit and full hairdo change in three minutes total!) when she totally wasn't getting paid for that awful stress. She's weirdly prepped for any horrible circumstance. And patiently so. For my pageant, because of high security and my bonehead self forgetting our wrist bands, she had to do full pageant makeup AND hair (this can be more serious than wedding makeup, mind you) in the parking lot!!! No shame, she had her game face on and made me feel like laughing instead of crying. I had a really horrible year last year. My skin showed it. It was scaly and parched. I also had really heavy bags under my eyes. My Photoshoot, my pinup modeling shoot and my entire pageant wouldn't let you know any of this. She covered it all up and I still can't tell you how. I have a really odd face, with strange proportions and weird shapes. Cherry is still the only MUA out of the twenty or more I've worked with who has EVER gotten it right. She studies the face and brings out what should be brought out and lets ppl look natural yet prettier in their features. Mom might not have blessed me with her looks but Cherry makes it seem that way. My makeup has lasted on every occasion over 12 hours. This is a CON as well, so please read on. Her fees are beyond reasonable. For the quality of her work, I'm shocked at what she's allowed me to get away with. She has great communication. She remembers if you've attempted to book her but didn't lock it down. She follows up when life gets too busy and you forget. Her energy is insatiably bubbly and fun!! She works on boys!!!!! Believe it or not, this is a really necessary component for any men who plan on being in a shoot of any kind. Her work is subtle yet makes the face pop on camera. I think she truly loves what she does and intends to create art, not make money from this. That being said, I know she uses top of the line makeup and tools, so it can't be cheap. She's also up-to-date with the newest makeup from all over the world and uses well-tested, exotic products you'd never get to use. Any girls afflicted with the Asian Eyes (my epithelial folds are slightly recessed, so i barely have a double eyelid), you'll be elated to know she can transform that, but with making the eye gorgeous, not fake, drawn or strange. She's really diverse. She works on every race so far that I've seen and brings out their features but makes their heritage stick out. (White, Asian, Latina, and I think I've seen her work on an African-American model too!) I've really only seen her work on young models and beauty queens, but I can only imagine what she can do for any age. CONS She usually books up really fast. If you want perfect wedding makeup, I'd book her fast during the wedding season. I was crushed when she wasn't available for something really important. Instead, she actually worked with me and smashed me in really early just to accommodate me. When I said earlier that it was a CON that her makeup lasted over 12 hours, it really is. It actually lasts 24 hours, which I used to my advantage. This is full disclosure here and Cherry doesn't actually know this but I do have to share. For the pageant, I was asked to return the following night to perform as the opening number for another pageant. I freaked out. I couldn't hire Cherry again. I didn't know what to do. So I KEPT MY MAKEUP ON. I went through an entire day of two hours of sleep, lots of alcohol and celebrating post-pageant, a massage, and tons of baked goods. My face was totally in tact. I'm only sharing this to let you know I was able to get back on that stage with no touchups and open this huge production, still looking pristine. I kid you not, 27 hours after application, I finally fell apart, and looked as gross as I should've after what I had done to myself before that. Conclusion: Personally, she's my go-to for any event or shoot. She's also become the trusted MUA of my closest friends and designers I work for for their fashion shows and photoshoots. read more

I came in with really messed up eyebrows(LOL) but she took care of me and got them back on point for my pictures. Soooooo, I was celebrating an amazing day in my life and to start it off Cherry did my makeup at 10 o'clock in the morning. She told me it would last all day. And she wasn't lying. I showered, took a nap, and ate a cheeseburger. The make -up lasted until I got home the next day at 1:30 in the morning. I've had the absolute honor to have been on the receiving end of Cherry's magical wand wielding ways several times now, and every single time ends with my stunned speechless self in absolute awe of the transformations she's capable of doing. And not in a "I don't recognize this pretty person looking at me" way that happens sometimes when MUA cake faces on you, but in a "WOAH THAT WAS IN ME THIS WHOLE TIME?" way, which is priceless.
