Virginia is a lovely host - present if you want her to be, and absent if you don't, which is something some other B&B's haven't figured out. :) The Stone Mansion is in a convenient location and much more comfortable than the hotels in the area. When I used my phone to see our lodging options, I resigned myself to sleeping somewhere resembling low income housing. Then I saw the B&B tab on TripAdvisor and the McNeill Stone Mansion B&B was presented with beautiful rooms just across the street. Gary and Virginia were very accommodating to our up in the air schedule, the rooms and mansion are beautiful, and the breakfast is fantastic. Take the time to get to know the history of the home and look through the numerous before and during photos of its restoration. I don't know when we will be back, but we will be back. I apologize for the photos. My next review should be of the image handling of an iPhone. I'm tired of fighting the image rotation.

When you stay, ask about how they restored the house....also ask about the third floor theater where the locals used to gather to put on plays. I suppose those more luxurious rooms were more expensive than mine, but I loved my room. They all have closets and a tv. The bed and breakfast is clean and charming. It is a large house and has a very large living room, computer room, kitchen, dining room, a screened porch, and family room. If my count is correct, I believe they have five bedrooms, some of which are large an have multiple beds and a couple have a single bed. The b&b is filled with beautiful decor. The owners, Linda and Karl Reichert, are lovely people who welcomed my whole party with warmth and delicious food. They make amazing breakfasts. The day before, you are given a menu for a three course breakfast. You choose what you'd like for each course. The first course is a fresh fruit bowl, the second is a bread course, such as homemade scones or muffins, and the third is an entree, such as pancakes or egg concoctions. All of their food was homemade from scratch. The scones were the best I've ever had in my life. Linda told me she shares recipes and gave me her scone recipe. The yard is fantastic. They have a gazebo, apple and walnut trees, a flower garden, a vegetable garden, and fruit plants. The fresh fruit you eat in the morning and some ingredients for other dishes come from their own personal garden. There is plenty of room for children to play and pets to run. For entertainment, there are tvs in every room and in the family room, there is a dart board, they have board games, and Muscatine is only a ten minute drive. This bed and breakfast is everything a b&b should be. The home is wonderful, the yard is gorgeous, the food is delicious and the people are fantastic. Every single detail of this house is beautifully done. Take a step into the turn of the century. How could you not pour yourself a thimble of sherry and sit quietly in the living room just absorbing the wonder, thinking about the intervening 125 years, the lives lived; the joys and sorrows, the losses, the loves. Magical? Indeed. (Feeling peckish? There are probably a few fresh baked goodies in the kitchen.) The feather bed was.....a dream! Lovely soaps and lotions are all here for bathing. Big cozy super fresh towels and best linens. And breakfast. Wow. You won't need lunch. It changed daily. A generous bowl of fresh fruit with yogurt always started it. The innkeeper was kind and welcoming, but also gave us space...breakfast was plentiful--eggs, sausage, toast, and coffee. They do take special dietary requests, and asked us about that when we arrived... Our room (we stayed in the main house) was decorated with antiques and wonderful old quilts, and faced the iron wagon bridge spanning the Des Moines River...we walked back and forth across this bridge several times. Next to the inn are several interesting shops with varying hours of operation...the general store was fun to browse through, and sells awesome homemade fudge. We did not have an in-room refrigerator, and didn't expect one but would recommend bringing a small cooler if wanting to keep drinks or food cold for more than a few hours (I did notice a mini fridge in the dining room)....also, most of the toiletries are provided upon request only. The inn has a colorful past which was fun to read about. If wanting a peaceful and interesting getaway I'd highly recommend staying here!
