The Lodging is very close to main street in Amana and was within walking distance of most of the attractions, restaurants, and shops. The bathroom is also handicapped accessible Cons: The main problem we had with the Lodging was that it was advertised as a Bed and Breakfast. While the bed part was pretty nice the Breakfast was...well neglected. The "english muffins" were stale and the tea and juice were ancient and tasted bad. Luckily due to the central location there was a very nice cafe ( Serena's ) right down the road where we had a great breakfast. Additionally the lodging had no wifi or any way to connect to the internet and the television had a limited 20 channels and bad resolution. Overall we had a nice stay in the Lace lodging but would have appreciated more attention to have been paid in regards to breakfast and technology.

As you drive toward the back you are welcomed by lush greenery: trees, shrubs, grass, and beautiful flowers. You note the fire pits and comfortable chairs arranged around the fire. You enter through a back door. Your eyes note the many historic pictures and artifacts while your nose detects a distinct, faint, pleasant smell - a mixture of bakery and fresh linen. As you enter the living area with the antique furniture you are reminded of your grandmother's home. It even feels like home. We were greeted by the amiable owners, John and Karin who treat you like family and offer you warm hospitality and a peaceful retreat in a setting that melds over 170 years of Amana history, culture, and hospitality. They serve a complimentary breakfast from 8-9 am featuring a variety of savory and sweets such as: fruit compote, fruit juices, yogurt, scrambled and herbed eggs, stuffed French Toast (oh my!), old fashioned oatmeal, sausage, biscuits, homemade southern-style gravy, and more. Our bedroom room was filled with antique furniture and adorned with antique quilts and lace, but the beds... Initially, I thought they may be too soft, but was I in for a surprise. I slept through the night for seven hours both nights. Because of a chronic illness I average 3 1/2 to 4 1/2 hours of sleep per night with multiple trips out of bed. At Die Heimat, I fell asleep, remained asleep, and awakened after seven hours ready to enjoy the many historical sites in the beautiful Amana Colonies. The food was excellent! The carriage house is very cozy. There is a small refrigerator, ironing board, microwave, and even bottles of water for the guests in a shared area. The room I stayed in twice was on the main floor with a very comfortable bed with nice linens, sofa, and table with good lighting. The bathroom is small but had everything I needed including a nice shower. The entire place was spotlessly clean. Access to the carriage house was easy. Parking is in the driveway. I felt very safe at all times. The outdoor gardens are beautiful. Shelley shared books of pictures of the storm that went through a few years ago and destroyed a lot of the trees. The damage was terrible but seeing their place now you'd never know that storm ever happened. I was heading north and stayed at Belmont B & B on the way up. I loved it so much I wanted to stay on the way back. They were booked full so I changed my travel dates so I could stay here. If I'm ever passing through Cedar Rapids again, I'll hope to find a room open so I can stay a third time. The location is not far off the beaten path and a short distance from Amana Colonies. I almost forgot to mention the other guests were so nice. Both times our breakfast conversations were interesting and genuinely enjoyed. Stay here! I enjoyed chatting with the other guests, and hearing the history of the property from our hosts. Though I don't have any dietary restrictions, Shelley did ask about that, so I'm sure they could accommodate those if necessary. Belmont Hill is an unexpected bit of Victoriana in a neighborhood of '70s ranch homes, though separated from them. If you are looking to be "where the action is", it may not be for you. But if you want friendly people, a comfortable room, good food, and a relaxing "no pressure" atmosphere, Belmont Hill is definitely your place.

There was another beautiful stained glass cabinet with tea pots and saucers in it. It was so beautiful that I had my husband paying attention to this really fine workmanship so he could someday build me something like that. That didn't go over well... The kitchen had everything you could need including a full fridge, stove/oven, dishwasher, nice dining room table, kettle and coffee maker among other things. There was plenty of kitchen items for cooking and once again clean and beautifully decorated. More cat decorations! There were two bedrooms, of which we only used one. And guess what? More cat decorations. Not complaining as we have two cats! I thought they were pretty neat. The unit itself definitely had a feminine touch of decoration without feeling old and like you were at Grandma's house. It was a nice change, as hubby isn't overly fond of the B&Bs that feel like you are at someone's grandparent's house. The second bedroom was very floral, so good thing our son wasn't with us. Ha! The bed was comfortable, the heating system worked well and the bathroom was great since we were only there two nights. No jacuzzi, but fine for our short stay. We opted out of breakfast, since we wanted to try some of the restaurants in the town, so we cannot comment on it. The price was very reasonable at $80 per night. I would definitely recommend this place for a stay close to town. On the way out, we talked to the other innkeeper and he was extremely friendly.

When I finally checked into the room (The Red Carpet Room), the first thing I noticed walking in was a smell of dampness--more than just a drying shower--something like previously damp carpet. The room was beautiful to behold, and the bed was comfy. They said it was their most popular room. I can see why--it is beautiful when you see it online which is what compels you to book it. Breakfast was okay, if you don't mind casserole-type dishes. The front desk person, and the kitchen/dining room helper were both very friendly, but unfortunately, those first impressions put me off of everything.
