I visited the new location and it's deceptively bigger. When you enter, it looks pretty small but toward the back where the thread and other supplies are located it's HUGE. There's plenty of parking and centrally located (easily accessible from the 52, 805, and 163). I am very happy with the new location and inventory. read more

took a foot pedal in to be tested as my serger turned on but wasn't stitching and was told most likely the foot pedal. needed it tested on a different machine. Was told they needed my machine to test it on. Yeh the machine it didn't work on. Never asked what model machine it was to nor even looked at it. Found another location to test it. Didnt work so was able to go home and order a replace online for $22 and three days later it was delivered and works great. How can a Bernina dealer not have any machines to test a foot pedal on? My Brother/Elna dealer has numerous models on display for those interested in trying various machines before purchasing and to test things like foot pedals on. I don't recommend them as they didn't seem very knowledgeable nor very willing to help. read more

Fran was also so so sweet and the overall atmosphere of this shop was very cozy and lovely! I had a great experience at the Sew Hut. I am a beginner at sewing and needed help finding a used sewing machine. Although the store didn't have a used one for me Ingrid and the other staff member were so welcoming and helpful and extremely knowledgeable. I ended up bringing a second hand machine I bought somewhere else and Ingrid took the time to sit down with me and show me a few things I could do to maintain my machine. When the Coronavirus pandemic started, I wanted to make masks, but wasnt very happy with Joanne's, so I went to Sew Hut for the first time. I have been thrilled with the personalized service and excellent prices there. Ingrid, the owner, has been in business for years, and her mother owned the shop before her. This is a small shop and you do better to call and make an appointment to shop. On e there, she shows you all fabric and supplies through the window, making the experience very -safe! Ingrid gives guidance on all notion and fabrics. I even bought a sewing machine there sight-unseen, and it has been perfect! Their prices are really good and you get old-fashioned service. She doesnt have a ton of fabrics, but the ones she does have are beautiful. There are no lines and the process takes a short time. I would totally recommend shopping at Sew Hut and will continue to do so long after the pandemic is over! I am so glad I found this place! read more

Love Sew Hut! I recently finished the Beginners Sewing Class here and am very pleased. My $70 bought me four, three-hour classes and one-on-one hands on instruction from Lynn and the other great Sew Hut employees. I came in with very little sewing knowledge and no sewing machine. I learned to shop for fabric, to read and sew from patterns, to install zippers, and so many other useful tips. I was able to practice on a user-friendly machine that I plan to buy in the near future. I learned so much in this class, I really can't say enough wonderful things about it. Lynn and the ladies (and Bryan) are extremely knowledgeable and patient people and such great teachers. Sew Hut is a wonderful place to learn the basics of sewing. They have everything you need in store OR you can opt to bring your own machine. I started the beginners class with absolutely NO experience. No idea how a sewing machine worked or what a bobbin was. A shame, I know =/ I am now into my 3rd class & starting my 2nd project. Lynne is a great teacher. Very knowledgable and works at each students own pace. I can confidently work a sewing machine, cut & follow patterns, and know the essential sewing terms. I can't wait to begin new projects =) The shop itself is small & cozy. They sell a variety of Bernina & Janome machines... I've been in 3 weeks in a row and they're still on sale! If you purchase your machine directly from them they include lessons & repairs. The store owner (I believe her name is Ingrid) always has a smile on her face and is so friendly. AMAZING place!! I had never touched a sewing machine before I took the classes here; now I own my own machine and I make projects almost every week! There is a long wait time (3-4 months) but if you put you name on the wait list it will be worth it! All of the staff are very friendly and helpful. The store is clean, well organized, and full of useful items to help you. I have already recommended several people to take the classes and since I purchased my Janome there I will be coming back to take the FREE machine classes. In April/May 2017, I was excited to take an introductory sewing classes from this place of business. It wasn't a free class and I was more than happy to pay for proper instruction. Cost was $90 for 4 Saturday classes, plus sewing items (fabric, sewing kit, etc). The student chooses a project to work on/make during each of the 3 Saturday classes. Goal is 3 completed projects. First Saturday class was spent answering questions and Lynn discussing her future trip to NYC. For my 1st project, I chose to make pajamas. Lynn was the teacher. During my 2nd Saturday class, Lynn provided wrong sewing instructions. Her solution was for me to spend the remaining time of my 2nd class to rip the seams of the pajamas. They were sewn too small. When I brought the matter to the owner, Ingrid, she became defensive, rude, and dropped me from this class. I recall a mother and daughter duo who were in the class and didn't seem to suffer any difficulty. I remember them because the daughter chose a color pattern very similar to the one I had chosen for my pajamas. Back to my review, I give Sew Hut on Balboa, 1 star. I felt singled out and intentionally given wrong instructions. When the matter was brought to the attention of the owner, her solution was simple - refund the money. Wrong. I wanted to take this class. I wanted to learn from you. I chose your place of business vs taking free sewing classes because I wrongly believed your instructor would teach me properly. I spent my time driving to JoAnn Fabrics in Point Loma, spent my time (again) looking for items on your sewing list, and spent my money buying all the required items yet your instructor didn't fulfill her part of the agreement - to teach properly. read more

Even during these crazy times, the crew at Sew Hut is offering excellent service! I've been making masks to donate and my sewing machine was sounding terrible, they took mine in right away (great no contact drop off and pick up plan) and offered me a loaner so I could keep churning out masks. Had my machine back in less than a week and was even able to buy more fabric, thread and machine needles from them over the phone, something the big box fabric stores can't keep up with right now. I bought my machine there many years ago and will continue to come back for their excellent service and will definitely plan to buy more fabric and supplies there from now on. Thanks Ingrid!! I walked in here once looking for something they didn't have ... beads or something, I think. Whatever it was, they didn't have it. But sprawled out on the carpet in front of me when I walked in was the single biggest, sweetest cat I've ever seen. I mean, this thing was HUGE! It kinda looked like a tiger, only bigger. I seem to remember his name was Garfield, but I can't be sure. In any case, this was one awesome cat. I recommend stopping in just to see him and pet him. He's one of those totally mild-mannered, affectionate cats -- more the kind that would love for you to come over and pet him, but wouldn't really seek it out ... of course, if I were as big as he was, I wouldn't want to move around too much either. The point is, this is a cat worth seeing. Oh yeah, and I think they sell sewing equipment or something at this place. Not really sure. But the cat was a sight to behold. read more

I found out about Sew Hut through Yelp of course after I went to the Continuing Education Ctr in Point Loma and was disappointed by the enormously large class despite it being free. The $60.00 I paid for the month long class at Sew Hut is worth it . There is a waiting list though as it is quite popular, so be sure to put your name down if you want to get in within the next couple of months. I took the basic sewing class with Lynn. I was a slow worker haha but I was able to complete my project and have a second one I will complete once I get my machine. Very personalized as it is only 6 people per class. Lynn makes sure that she goes around helps people as they work. I like the very hands on approach and she gives good tips. She even brought in some extra material and patterns she didn't want anymore from her own personal collection that she shared with the class. It's also a store, so they sell some of the machines there where they provide free classes on maintenance and some extras like sewing on zippers, etc. I'm not quite ready for a machine yet, but most likely I will buy one there and take her other classes again. Very nice lady. It's kind of tucked away in a shopping center next door to Goodwill. I didn't see the cat though :( read more

I took the beginning sewing class last month with Lynn. I absolutely loved the class!! It is tailored to your personal needs because it is such a small group (6 people max). In the four weeks of class I was able to finish 3 different projects and learn a variety of things: differences in threads, how to read a pattern, how to sew a zipper, how to sew a button hole, differences in materials, etc. The only thing that would have made my experience better would have been if my "but why?" questions had been answered a bit more thoroughly. However, I understand that's a tall order to fill. Overall, I'm very pleased with Sew Hut and their friendly and knowledgeable staff. read more

They have a 4 week course that lets you try different projects and the best part is that you don't have to own a sewing machine! It's the perfect tester to see if this is something you'll enjoy. During the class they were very attentive and as the classes are small you don't have to wait to ask questions or get help. I made a perfect tote bag and zipper bag for my new sewing supplies. The class really showed me that I do love sewing so I decided to buy a machine. Again, the staff are very friendly and knowledgeable. They let me try various machines, discussed the pros and cons for the projects I wanted and let me know about sales in the future. I currently take the beginners' class at Sew Hut and I love it. Lynn is super helpful and answers all of our questions. The classes are no larger than 8 students at a time. Compared to my night class at Continuing education, Lynn's class is a breath of fresh air with the class size and teaching style. I plan on taking other courses offered at Sew Hut. Everyone who works there is so kind and helpful. You'll occasionally see their FAT cat, Garfield lying around which is hilarious. At first I thought starting off on an EASY project/pattern would be a bummer/slow but you'll appreciate the stress-free/easy learning curve. I highly recommend this class and will definitely be coming back soon! I find their supplies a bit expensive however I did get a great deal for a trolley bag for my sewing machine. read more

Took a machine in to have it serviced, but no cleaning or removing pieces of lint on the inside were done. I think the store should have a sign that tells you. " If you don't ask, we sure won't go beyond " As far as I can see, some grease was probably applied to several moving parts, and the machine was tested, but other than that, I'm at a loss, but paid $50.00. read more

It is with a great sadness that I have to write such a bad review. I really wanted to like this place because it was so much closer to my house. The ladies in the store were very helpful but I am writing on the service of my Bernina. For a Bernina certified store, one would think that customer service would be at a higher standard, but alas it wasn't. I took my machine in in June to have it cleaned, the quilting table replaced and repaired. A month later I had not heard anything so I called to inquire and I was told the tray cover was on back order. So I called again in a month.. still not done. At this point I figured they would call me. So now it is early December and I called and said it didn't matter about the machine I just wanted it back. I was told it was done. I came in, paid and took my machine home. I was berated on the phone and never updated on the progress. When I got the machine home, it didn't work, nor was it cleaned, and the serial number was written in Sharpie on the back new cover as oppose to a neat label or using the previous small part. I doubt it was cleaned(very dirty inside) or tested.. as it didn't work out of the shop. I was yelled at because I had issue with the time it took to return my machine to me. They claimed they did not have my phone number, yet my information was in their system 2 times..so they neglected to take my phone number 2x? I clearly remember giving them it.. and why would I leave an expensive machine with no means of contacting me? I am very disappointed with the customer service here and will be contacting Bernina to let them know. I hardly ever write a bad review but please cautiously take your machine here. Instead I will drive 40 minutes to Poway to have it serviced by people who value my business read more

This is the place to go if you want to learn how to sew. Lynn's explanation's are great and everyone has learned quite a bit. The 2nd class is a little overwhelming (when everyone starts their projects) but it isn't too bad. I really can't believe how much I've learned already. The staff is very nice and helpful. Sew hut is a great place to learn the basics of sewing. I recently completed a 4 session beginners course. The class was small, but can range from 4-6 beginners. Lynn is a great teacher and gives great tips and suggestions. After 4 classes I had successfully made pajama pants and a quilted cover for my sewing machine. A plus is that you can take class 3 and 4 again for a fee in the future if you need 'follow-up' instruction on a project. read more

Some how I messed up the needle position of my Janome sewing machine. I brought it back to the store (of the same name but different location) I had purchased it from to have it corrected. I had taken the needle out so I wouldn't create a bigger problem. At the time the technician wasn't on site and one of the workers put a needle in it and tested the machine and it didn't work correctly. So I was going to leave it for the technician to repair it. The sales person said I had to leave a $199 deposit. I have been sewing for many years and have had other machines repaired without a deposit. So I decided not to leave the machine with them because of the deposit request. I went to Sew Hut and Bryan took the machine in and said he would repair it without a deposit. He called back to tell me that the needle wasn't in all the way and that it was operator error. He also explained how I messed the machine up in the first place. I had hit the needle housing and knocked it out of position and if I had turned off the machine and than turned it back on it would have corrected it's self. Bryan and Sew Hut didn't charge me for the repair because it was a simple error on my part(that it didn't damage the machine) and best of all told me what to do in the future if I have this problem again. I'm so grateful to Bryan for his honest and quick service. read more
