I have never had such a miserable Alterations experience in my life and I would give negative stars if possible. DO NOT GO HERE FOR ANY ALTERATIONS, ESPECIALLY A WEDDING DRESS. Mary said she would update it to July 15. July 15 ROLLS AROUND AND I HEAR NOTHING. July 22 Contacted Mary again and SHE NOT EVEN STARTED WORKING ON MY DRESS. IN FACT , MARY LOST MY DRESS for most of the day! Was on the phone deal with this for HOURS. She finally found it under someone else's name and I had to go back in because SHE FORGOT WHAT I EVEN WANTED DONE. HOW DOES THIS HAPPEN?!?!? I was supposed to come in at noon and she wasn't even ready. I had to reschedule for that evening for the alterations appointment. Mary stated that she would have the dress 100% done by July 25. July 27. Went in to pick up the dress and everything was TERRIBLY MENDED AND LOOKED HORRENDOUS. I couldn't even move my arms and it was sewed completely opposite of how I asked. She also was covering cleavage and had a piece of appliqué just put there. Not centered or made at all how I had asked. August 6 Mary finally finished the dress. At this point I am over it and take it how it is. Mary then stated that she needed 520 DOLLARS FOR ALL OF HER WORK. WHY?!?!? That's way over the quoted amount. BRIDES BEWARE!!!! I am a less than adversary shape so tops, pants and dresses always need taken in/ or shortened. Thanks to Mina for this lifesaver of a woman. I had one of those belongs--in-a-wedding-nightmares-forum incidents. Needless to say that when I finally did get my hands on my BM dress, I took it and ran. The problem I had was where could I go that wouldn't charger me an arm and a leg for alterations but can do a good job within the next two weeks. Enter Sew Sweet Alterations. On Mina's rec, I called and Mary said to swing by on Monday afternoon. I went, tried on the dress, she looked it over quickly, pinned a couple areas and gave me a vague answer on when it would be done. I asked if she thinks she'd get it done that week. She said yes. Next afternoon, I get a phone call. My dress is ready. Wow! There were quite a few changes and she seemed so busy that I wasn't expecting it and hadn't made time to get in until Thursday. When I made it in, I tried on the dress and it fit much better. I'm happy with her work. The shop's a little tricky to get to. You'll see a tiny strip with a few storefronts. You'll actually have to go around to the back. That's where her shop is. Also, she seems to be doing a million things at once so don't go in expecting someone super chatty. She's nice but super busy. I found Mary through a Google search of Alterations in Kansas City. Although her shop is in North Kansas City it was well worth the trip to take my wedding dress to her. She had my dress done in less than a week and it was amazing. I didn't have that many alterations that needed to be done but she got it done really quickly and her work is amazing! If you have a wedding coming up, I would DEFINITELY recommend her. I asked around at many other shop and they pretty much charged double what she charged me. I had 3 layers shortened and a bustle put in my dress and was charged about $80 bucks (i think). There's a possibility that all my clothes need ruching and thanks to Tim Gunn I know exactly what that is. I took my new dress from Retro Vixen in because as it fit perfectly, it was a bit long for my taste. I had called last Sunday just to see if there was a recorded message with business hours on it. To my surprise, someone answered the phone. I hurriedly apologized stating I was trying to call a business for their hours. Mary assured me that I had the right number and that the phone just transfers to her if no one answers. Talk about customer service! My appointment was for 12:30 the next day, I came in, tried on the dress, was pinned in a few places but spent the next 30 minutes just gabbing with Mary and Mina. They were so fun. Mary asked when I needed the dress, I told her around the end of the month. 24 hours later I got a phone call, the dress was done and ready to be picked up. The ruching and the hemming and taking in the top a bit ran me $30. I absolutely have found a new place to take all my clothes! read more

I've tried all kinds of different shops...up north, Briarcliff, downtown and even out south at 95th and Metcalfe. They all got the job done but it was either crazy expensive or just not well done, sometimes both. I found Sew Sweet and gave it a run....BEST SHOP I've found. They are nice, polite, FAST and GOOD! The shop is on the back side of a strip on N Oak, nothing exciting to look at, it's small but the value and the quality is top notch!!! Thanks to Mary my uniforms look great when I'm at work! Mary can alter anything in the shortest amount of time. I had a pretty extravagant bridesmaid dress (Jim Hjelm) for her to alter -- strapless, floor-length with a train. I made sure to bring it in with plenty of time for her to get it done and for me to try it on (brought it in 08/30, need it back 09/09). She did all the alterations in ONE day. I brought it on Monday evening and got it back the next evening. I honestly did not expect her to get it done so quickly. I needed it hemmed about 2", the bust needed to be taken in, and since it was floor-length with a train, I asked her to add a bustle for after the ceremony. The alterations were perfect. The top fit snugly (I hate playing the "adjusting game"), the bustle is going to be a lifesaver, and the length was perfect as well. I thought this dress would take longer because there were so many parts and layers to it: boning along the bust, full-length dress with train and lining, etc. She saved me a ton of money (bridal shops charge an arm and a leg) and she did it so quickly that it's one less thing I have to worry about. She actually mentioned that she wished she had more bridal pieces to work with because she enjoys it so much -- so ladies, you know where to go with your special occasion dresses! FYI on prices (may vary depending on complexity of dress): $25 - bustle $35 - hem with train and lining $20 - bust taken in As I said in my previous review, the woman is busy with alterations, watching kids, boy scouts, etc., so don't turn away just because it seems like she's all over the place. I found Mary by my Google searches for a place with good reviews to take my wedding dress to. I can definitely agree that she deserves this rating! My wedding is August 23, 2014 and I live about an hour away from Sew Sweet. I made an appointment to take my dress on July 18 for my first fitting just to make sure I had enough time for the alteration. I put my dress on with all the undergarments and shoes that I'd be wearing on my wedding day and Mary made notations of where my dress needed hemming and suggested cups rather than taking the bust in. She called me on the 21st saying my dress was done but there was a part of my dress that was bunched up that she didn't remember seeing when I tried it on. So I was able to come down the 25th to try it on again and it turns out a part of my dress had just gotten snagged by my beadwork and she fixed it in a jiffy! And she added a beautiful 3-point bustle on the back and the hooks fit in with my beadwork so well it's going to be hard for my maid of honor to find them! LOL I can't express my gratitude enough for the professional work Mary did on my dress! It fits perfectly and I couldn't ask for anything better. The price was excellent as well. I've had three pieces altered here. I'm going to address them individually. 1. I had my rehearsal dinner dress altered here, just needed the armholes taken in a bit so the dress fit better across the chest. She had it done beautifully in less than a day. 5/5 2. I had malfunctioning zipper on a golf skirt. The zipper wouldn't unzip and I got stuck in the skirt and literally had to tear it off. I needed it for a business trip that I was leaving for the next day so I paid a rush fee. I picked it up and went on my way. Half way across the country I put it on...she sewed the seam back up but didn't actually fix/replace the zipper. The teeth on the zipper started coming apart right after I put the skirt on. I couldn't wear the skirt for the work event I was at and had to break uniform. 2/5 3. My wedding dress...was perfect when she pinned it and I had it on, but she must have taken the pins out without actually altering the straps on the dress. See attached pic. The top of the dress fit horribly and I felt awful in my dress. Absolutely hated the top of it, you could see through / down my chest area all day. Not how I wanted to feel on my wedding day. Maybe I should have tried it on one last time before I left her shop with it, but I had just had it on days before and was confident it was ready. 2/5 ALSO: They say for formal (prom/wedding) they only take cash, and the signs say cash or check for everything else. I ordered my wedding dress custom-made on Etsy. It didn't fit the way I wanted it to, which I half expected because I'm sure the seller wouldn't want it to be too small, but it also didn't have the sweetheart neckline it was supposed to have. It's a '50's style wedding dress, so I didn't want to take it to just any seamstress. It's a satin-like material underneath and has a sheer polkadot material overlay that comes up in a boatneck and has sleeves to just above my elbows. The sweetheart neckline was supposed to be in the satin-like material. I read review upon review until I found Mary. Every single good review is definitely accurate. She's (1) amazing, (2) fast, (3) very nice, and (4) has very good prices. I took my dress in Saturday the 8th and she had it done Monday the 10th! She took in the waist of my dress, fixed the sleeves and the neckline, and it looks exactly the way I want it to look. Plus, she fixed a zipper for my fiance within that time. When I went to pick my things up Tuesday evening, she even added a hook & eye to my dress while I was changing back into my other clothes. I will definitely be going back to her for my second fitting closer to my wedding date and I'll be taking my petticoat to her as well for this dress. She recommended a dry cleaner for my petticoat and dress that I plan to go to as well. She also caught on to my interests quickly and even recommended a shop for me to check out for vintage things. Back in March I started to do research to find someone who could help me with my alteration needs for my wedding dress. I ended my search by finding Sew Sweet Alterations on Yelp. The business had several really good 5 star reviews. I gave her a call to make sure she wasn't to crazy busy and make sure she worked on wedding dresses. She seemed friendly on the phone and based on the reviews I decided to go with Sew Sweet. To start her hours aren't very accommodating for the average person who works during the day. She is open 10-4 Monday thru Friday, I fortunately, on occasion, have Mondays off so this didn't drive me away. Also when I originally called her I asked her hours, to which she sensed my concern, and said that sometimes she could arrange a Saturday appointment or sometimes do a little later than 4 if requested. When I first walked in she was on the phone and seemed angry. She hung up, apologized and told me that she had been getting the same telemarketing person calling her over and over again. They kept calling while I was there and she kept answering, bad decision in my opinion. She kept getting madder and I kid you not, was screaming at the top of her lungs at them. She then dialed 911 and handed the phone to me with a envelope that had her address and told me to tell them to get here. I understood her frustration with someone prank calling, but really? Just don't pick up... problem solved. Ok so I should have turn around and walked out then but I didn't. I know that was my fault. Ok dress is on, I told her I wanted a bustle put in the back and maybe hem the bottom just a bit, the dress drug the floor just a tiny bit. We talked about price she said for the bustle she usually charges by how many (excuse my un technical terms) pin ups she puts in the dress which she said should be 3 or 4. I get out of it and she says she will call me when its done, it shouldn't take to long. She called about 3ish weeks later to say its ready. I was so excited to get it, I rushed out of my house without the correct undergarment to try the dress on. I would have tried to go back a different day but I live in Overland Park and with shortened hours I just wanted to take it and go. I did try it on and the hem was ok, however between the 3 people that walked in to bring her stuff to alter, and me being frazzled with not having what I needed I didn't talk to her about the bustle (again my fault on that) I paid and left. Long story short I didn't get the bustle. Went back tried my dress on, she said oh I don't think we need a bustle. I had been losing some weight so I had her take it in a little bit by my chest, so you couldn't see down my dress when I bent over. This is now 3 weeks before my wedding. I asked how long this would take (this was on a Monday) she said oh this should be quick I should have this by the end of the week, but I will call you. The following Monday I get a call from Mary, "Hi Carrie hey listen looks like I wrote take in 3/4 inch on both sides but I don't know where to take it in" I think my mouth hit the floor, I said around my chest, "oh yea thats right, I've had so many prom dresses come in I can't remember what we were going to do" The following Monday April 30th (My wedding was that week, Friday the 4th) I still hadn't heard from her, so I call. "Hi Mary, you have my wedding dress you were going to do a simple alteration and I need to know when that will be done," she got my name found my dress and said "Oh ok we are just doing the 3/4 inch taking it in, I can have that done by Wednesday is that ok?" I said No, you have had it 2 weeks already and I still need to have it pressed before my wedding on Friday" again she blamed those prom kids who had made her push off my dress. She would get it done that day and call me. I am partial to my wedding so I thought my WEDDING DRESS was slightly more important than those PROM KIDS dresses, sorry, but if you can't handle that many alterations then please don't take on that responsibility, or at least do the alterations in the order that they came in. I was livid, I did go pick it up and went straight to my moms to try the entire outfit together. So I am trying it on and my maid of honor is pricked by a pin. She pinned up the bustle but never sewed the buttons or string in there, NO WONDER SHE DIDN'T THINK I NEEDED A BUSTLE, she started one and never finished it so it was hidden!!! Then the day of my wedding we got the dress on and i felt a prick in the back of my leg sure enough more pins. I couldn't believe the disorganization and the fact that she never measured not one person came in! She seems to take on more than she can handle, she seems nice and the prices are fairly low, which I assume is what brings everyone in but long story condensed into this; I was very dissatisfied and would NOT go back! Picked this place because of the reviews. And, it was A-MA-ZING!! Lightning fast, an amazing price, friendly service, quality work... a hidden gem for alterations in KC. I brought a second-hand wedding dress to this shop to be altered, to make it my own. I needed the train shortened, a sash sewn on, bra cups sewn in, a new hook, and a bustle for the new shorter length. Mary (and the other lady in the shop!) were so sweet and had the dress all pinned up in just a couple of minutes. I had a couple ideas that would have honestly made them extra money (a lace overlay and cutting the train to a shorter length), but they recommended the best method for the look of the dress, instead. They were obviously interested in doing it right, not just pocketing extra money. Both ladies stood around and brainstormed ideas, and adjusted pins until they had the look just right. I'd heard wedding dress alterations could cost $200-$300 in many shops, so I was bracing myself for the bill, but the total cost was under $100 for all that work! And, although I didn't need the dress for three months, Mary called in two days and said it was ready for pickup! Super fast! My dry cleaner can't even clean a shirt in two days... I can't believe Mary could alter an entire wedding dress in that time! Judging by the racks hanging in the store, they do lots of wedding dresses, formal wear, uniforms (saw some fire dept uniforms), and even repairing children's clothes. Highly, highly recommended for bridal alterations (or any other type)!! Note, they are open M-F 10-4, but they have appts available outside those hours. The building is at the corner of North Oak Tfwy and NE 58th Terrace (turn down the side street at the CarQuest auto parts store, and park behind the building). The front door is tricky to find. I would love to review their work, unfortunately they never showed for my appointment. I called a week in advance and scheduled an appointment with them on their late night since their normal hours are 10am to 4pm. I let them know that I had to take off of work early in order to make the appointment. I left work early and I called when I was on the way and there was no answer. I assumed they were busy with another customer so I proceeded to the appointment thinking that no business would be a no show for a scheduled appointment at their office. I was wrong. The owner always has her children running around and blamed them for moving my dress to the "done" side without it being touched, so she never did my dress. Super unorganized. All I needed done was a simple bustle and some cups sewn in. She ended up doing it in front of me and drug my dress along her dirty floors because she realized one of her kids was in her car alone. Very unprofessional. She did not have me try the dress on before she shoved me out the door so I didn't realize until two days before my wedding that the hook to my bustle was never sewn on. I purchased a dress online from a vendor located in Hong Kong. They completely disregarded the customized measurements and my daughter was left with a baggy dress one week before her Senior prom. I was turned away by two shops that did not have the time. I found Mary in a search. I went to her shop and she had two clients (a testament to her good work), but we only waited for a few minutes. A million stars, I ordered my wedding dress off Amazon. I got it on September 13th. (My wedding is September 25.) The dress I got was NOT the dress in the picture. It was hideous and did not fit at all. I cried almost the whole night. Told my fiancee-he did a search on YELP and found Sew Sweet. He forwarded me the number. I called the very next morning. Made an appointment for that day. I get to Sew Sweet and the first thing that strikes me is how nice everyone was. Mary said she can fix the dress. Had ideas to make changes. Mary remade my whole dress. It is so beautiful. I took it on on Wednesday. She had the dress finished by the following Monday. I am so thankful to her. I had an appointment over the weekend. When I got there the store said closed. This was the first time I've been to an alteration shop with my dress. On the phone she told me to bring heels and all of my accessories. I thought this was going to be fun! I got in there, and she had me put the dress on. She immediately cut the straps and moved on to another person and was totally attentive to her. Mind you, I was there first at the time of my scheduled appointment. I was in and out in 5 minutes and the rest of the time I was in there she just told me about how to lose weight. I am 5'9 and 135lbs. My dress is a size 8 and I have no idea why she was fixating on me losing weight instead of altering my dress hence the reason I WAS THERE IN THE FIRST PLACE. She didn't measure me. She didn't have me try on my accessories or shoes with the dress to see if it was long enough. She did NOTHING except cut the straps to make it a halter which I do not want. The straps needed to be shortened a bit as they kept falling off my shoulders anyway. She moved on to her other appointments. This place had great reviews but I do not recommend it unless you want someone to tell you how to lose weight, cut up your dress, and disrespect your time by not paying any attention to you during your SCHEDULED appointment. Pros: I got a wedding ball gown (with several layers) hemmed and bustled for $95 and it was done almost 2 weeks before promised. The seamstress, I believe mary is here name, is very nice. Cons: it's a very small shop, and even though I had an appointment I had to wait each time because there are only two dressing rooms. The "dressing rooms" are adjoined rooms held together only by curtains, and aren't very private by any means. It was a little uncomfortable. The seamstress's son (5) was there both times, and insisted on hanging on to her and stepped on my white wedding gown with his shoes on multiple times and she never said anything. My biggest complaint is the woman that assists mary, I believe her name we Debbie. She is completely rude. She told me my wedding dress looks like a chandelier that would hang in a courthouse (no one could ever find that flattering). Then when I went to pick my dress up from alterations, I asked her whom to make the check out to (the sign at the register said cash or check only) and she looked at me as if I'm an idiot and told me she doesn't take checks. I informed her that her sign said otherwise, and she took my check after that.....along with a copy of my drivers license info and a speech on why they don't take checks and how no one accepts checks anymore. By this point, I was irritated and came back with "well most places also take credit." Which they don't. She then proceeded to go on and on about how good of a deal I got from them. Overall, I got what I went there for which was alterations and price was decent. I was so grateful to come across sew sweet alterations. For those of you married or getting married know how expensive weddings can cost. Sew sweet alterations took my wedding gown and altered it in ONE DAY at a cost far less than you can find elsewhere. She was so sweet and helpful. My only complaint, my dress was altered a little small. Everything looked great except the back was a little tight showcasing some back fat. I was insecure about it all day at the wedding. I would still go back and still recommend this place. read more

I'm getting married this coming June in San Diego. My mother purchased some gorgeous material from Kaplans on the plaza. Anyways...my mom brought her material up to Mary at Sew Sweet for her to make a pair of pants for her to wear at the wedding. Mary had said it wasn't a problem and she would get the pants made and give her a call when they were ready to come try on. Three weeks pass and my mom calls Mary and asks how the pant are coming along. Mary says that she couldn't make the pants because she had to many projects to get done. REALLY????? How unprofessional to not even call my mom to let her know! God only knows how long she would have let that material sit there. I was so unimpressed with her customer service! So having three weeks left till the wedding we had to scramble and find someone to make them. We went to Sisters on Antioch and they are amazing! They called two days later and had my mom come in for a fitting:). So my awful experience with Sew Sweet was based on awful customer service! I will never go back to Sew Sweet. read more
