I've always seen Sey beans being used for pourovers at a bunch of coffee shops, but never actually visited the actual shop until recently. Was pretty excited, as I kept hearing raving reviews. I only got an iced latte, since pourovers after 12pm keep me up at night. Am looking forward to trying their lighter roasts next time. The staff seemed friendly too, would love to ask about their coffees when there are fewer people around. The space itself is beautiful. Lots of natural light pouring in, plenty of open wooden seating, and greenery spanning the walls. However, the line is a little poorly situated and blocks the exit. There's no menu visible in line, so you can't look at what you want ahead of time. It was also WAY too loud, just from the sheer amount of people chatting. I've been really wanting to come here for quite some time, as I've heard it's one of the best specialty coffee roasters in the city. We came around 2 PM on a weekend, and it was absolutely packed. Every seat taken, and we just got lucky with someone leaving right as we got our coffee. The interior is really nice and airy with lots of lighting; great place to hang with someone! I got the cortado, and this was really spectacular. The best way to describe it is that it tasted like a pour over with its flavor condensed into an espresso drink. The typical darkness and bitterness that you find in a cortado wasn't there, but was replaced with a light fruitiness. Truly special. The cortado naturally was also prepared super well, with a great balance of milk. They also serve it with some sparkling water as a palette cleanser! After hearing so many great things about Sey, I had to check it out for myself! Since it was a warm day, I ordered an Iced Latte. I honestly was a little disappointed because sure it was good, but it did not meet all the hype surrounding it. Maybe it was an off-day or they do better with a different type of drink. I appreciated presentation of the latte on the little tray, and it was accompanied with a glass of sparkling water which I enjoyed. The staff was nice and the ambience was good, though I felt like there was limited seating. Also, don't plan on coming here if you wanted to find a cafe to get some work done because there are stickers on a majority of the tables indicating that they do not allow laptops (there was 1 section where there were people working on laptops). EVERYTHING about this place screams GOOD VIBES. Such an industrial, eclectic, natural environment. Plants - everywhere. I'm here for it! I went here with family and instantly fell in love with it. The moment you walk in, you are greeted by whoever is at the register. The employees are super nice and very knowledgeable of what they sell. I get my usually, iced chai latte with oat milk. Sey is such a quintessential Bushwick coffee shop located in what looks to be a refurbished industrial space, with skylights, hanging, plants, and minimalist decor. From the glass wall in the back you can see into some of their coffee production in the back, which they clearly take seriously. In fact, they proudly tout how carefully they source treat every step of the process, from how they treat their growers, to where they source their beans and how they roast them in house. They also offer a subscription service, so if you're a fan of their coffee and make it at home regularly, it's something you should consider. I tried an iced coffee from here and a dirty iced chai, both made to perfection and had smooth but complex flavor profiles. I appreciated the presentation of the drinks, which were served in a chemex-like bottle, but mostly I really appreciate the kindness of their staff, who graciously poured my drinks to go when I had to leave midway through my drink. This seems like a great space to people watch or catch up with a friend at while getting a nice, clean, and tasty caffeine boost. read more

I love Sey. It is my go-to cafe for mid-day and weekends. The first time I walked in on a Saturday morning/afternoon, the place was bumping hip hop, like a day-time club cafe with plants and natural light streaming in from the skylight. I felt like all the artsy interesting Bushwick people come here to socialize, work or meet. The music is more chill during the week when people are working on their laptops in the designated area. I go for not only the vibe but also the product. I love their coffee drinks and their cookies -- you can't go wrong. The staff are all very friendly every time I've interacted with them. Overall, 4.5/5 but I will bump it to a 5 for good vibes and experience! This was truly a higher end coffee snob experience. The interior was well decorated with lots of plants of different sorts. It was pretty busy Saturday afternoon and it took a bit to find seating but I understand why. High quality coffee drinks with good vibes can be hard to come by! I got the "Enrique Merino" Single Cup (so kind of a pour over) for $10 and it came in a really nice set up with a cup of sparkling water to cleanse your palette, a little card to tell you about the coffee beans you're consuming, etc. Definitely try this in the cafe if you have the time because it's worth the experience! I found the coffee to be fruity & floral with low acidity. It's definitely a unique profile that's worth trying. The only downside is that it was too diluted, but other than that, very delicious cup of coffee! Copped a box of beans that they roast in house. It's busy, but the line moves fast (though tough luck finding a place to sit). It's a bit of a strange contrast because the area outside is pretty quiet, but there are a lot of people in the cafe once you open the door. Drip coffee for about $5 was alright. Stopped by here twice while visiting New York from LA. As somebody who is super into coffee, the industry, and the whole art of brewing/roasting, it was a no brainer to come give this place a try. "Best Roaster in the US" "Best coffee in New York" These are 2 of the most common things I've heard about Sey. I've tried their beans once back home at a shop in LA. Honestly, wasn't too impressed. It was some washed Ethiopian that was brewed on a v60, which is my usual preferred way of brewing. During my 2 visits here, I got about 5 drinks. An iced oat milk latte, a hot oat milk latte, an iced coffee, single origin espresso, and the Danche single cup brew. I'm going to start off with the weak and that's the iced oat milk latte. Honestly, I'm not a fan of iced oat lattes in general, but I think Sey's is very underwhelming. If you like the taste of just iced oat milk, I think it's probably for you. I'm not sure if it's their ratios for iced lattes or their extremely light roasts get drowned out by the oat milk, but hardly any coffee was tasted. That's however about as far as the negatives I have for Sey. I have a picture of the hot oat milk latte and I think the picture is just a testament to the skill of the baristas that work at Sey. Perfectly frothed oat milk that wasn't littered with tons of big air bubbles. As somebody who has been disappointed in many coffee shops over piss poor milk frothing, I was super impressed when I walked over to pick up the latte. This is one of the few shops where I didn't feel like I could've just frothed it better on my machine at home. The hot latte was also a different experience than the iced. The coffee was there but very faint. It made me wonder if just adding ice muted the flavor of the coffee since chilling drinks tends to do that (hence why alcohol chilled is easier to drink). The iced coffee was also pretty good. I forgot what roast they had that day, but it was on the nuttier with a tad bit of sweetness to me. When I asked the barista in front how they make their iced coffee, I was told they brew it over a cold block and blast it with liquid nitrogen to help preserve the flavors. Not sure if I heard it wrong, but it was what intrigued me to try it. The single origin espresso was also pretty good. Hardly any astringency and was very much on the fruitier end. Something I think alot of shops aren't brave enough to put on their menu (and for good reason because it's hard to do well) but I very much enjoyed this one. The 2 single cups that I got were also pretty decent. One was the Danche and I forgot what the other was. I'm going to refrain from calling them what they aren't, which is a pour over. They're brewed on aeropresses and to be honest, while it isn't my preferred brewer, I didn't have issues with the cups I got. Both were very enjoyable and I felt like they were better than the pour over using Sey beans that I had back at home. So is this the best coffee in the US or in NY? I think that really depends on the person. I LOVED the texture of the oat milk and have tons of respect for the barista who made that because it's not an easy feat and one 99% of coffee shops don't do well. All my other drinks with the exception of the iced latte were great. I loved being able to just ask brewing questions to the baristas and having them share what they do. Personally for me, this easily in my top 2 for coffee shops I had during my week and half in New York. The other shop I would have in my top 2 is just one that brews how I prefer my coffee, which is more tea-like. read more

The only con is that laptops are not allowed but that also totally makes sense given the limited space and seating and wanting to have room for everyone. My GF have a little coffee love club and travel all over to experience coffee. We were excited to finally get to sample SEY. Love the space and the Ethiopian pourover was great but the servers soured the experience for us. Any time we asked about anything we got some stink eye. For example, we inquired about the ceramics used and were simply told that they are private commissioned and wouldn't offer anything else. Sey is well known for producing extremely light roasted coffees. I'd go back again to take in the really nice ambiance, sip a tea (or a cheaper coffee option), and buy a box of beans to brew at home. I got a pourover of the Danche, which came in a glass jug with a small cup to drink from. It also came with a side of sparkling water as a palate cleanser. The jug was really hot to the touch and hard to hold, so maybe they should have used a different vessel to hold the freshly brewed coffee. The coffee felt a bit under extracted (watery?) compared to how I prefer mine. My friend got one of their iced teas (they sell Song Tea) and that had the depth of flavor that I was expecting the coffee to have. I also bought a box of their Bukeye roast to go, and frankly liked the results I got with a v60 (brewing 15.5g at 1:17, 30 second bloom, 4 min total brew time) more than what I was served from their cafe. read more

The biggest appeal of Sey for me is the interior and space. It is brightly lit by all the sunlight windows in the ceiling. It also has a lot of greenery that creates an inviting space for conversations amongst friends. The coffee honestly reminds me of blue bottle (my personal hot take) so I wasn't super impressed. But I heard from a friend that slot o f different coffee shops use their beans. They have their own roasters that you can see right behind the main area.
