We just tried to return some tools which had not been used and were told they didn't take returned tools even when the packaging was complete and a receipt was shown. They never bothered to tell us when we made the purchase and I saw no signs that that effect. This place is about the size of the bathrooms at Home Depot but they seem to have carefully selected their merchandise. I needed some zip-ties. I walked down the two aisles (or was it three?) they had and swung back around. I'm used to not asking for help since 1) I'm a dude and 2) Home Depot is staffed by morons and asking for help never gets you anywhere. But I asked here and they answered. It was refreshing to speak to someone that knew what I was talking about and where it was. As I was being rung up the lady kept staring up at the wall. I get all kinds of stuff here. I got my replacement keys here. I get kitchen supplies here. I pick tape and paintbrushes here. And the family who run the counter are so sweet and helpful! Let's be clear: this place is tiny, but it packs a lot of commonly useful stuff into a very small space. You won't find big items such as sinks and vanity mirrors here, but you will find a host of plumbing and electrical repair parts, basic painting and touch-up supplies, nails, screws, rope, and a basic selection of tools. There's even half an aisle dedicated to random kitchen and bath stuff. Prices are excellent when you consider that you're not driving out of SF-- it's easily within walking distance of NOPA, Lower Haight, Alamo Square, USF, and Western Addition. Their economy brand items ("DoIt Best") is comparable to the low-end stuff available at Discount Lumber, and often cheaper. Don't come here for: drywall, lumber, big plumbing, advanced electrical. read more

Friendly, family-owned, well-stocked... and has that great old hardware store smell. What's not to love? These folks should teach classes on maximizing use of space because seriously, every square inch of space is jam-packed with stuff. I particularly like that they sell terra cotta plant saucers, because I always need them, and I like even more that they are kept on a rack outside, so I don't have to get sucked deeper into the shop and come home with three sizes of wrench, new doorknobs, a broom, and an assortment of fuses every time I go. read more

1) Were not there when they were supposed to be open on a Sunday. 20 minutes late. I waited outside out of desperation because I needed a key copied. 2) The man who worked there was the worst. His excuse was to shrug and say, "sometimes people are late." On a normal day, we would have had words. That day, however, I really needed that damn key. 3) He made the key, I took it home, and it was the wrong damn key. Totally different serial number on it. It didn't even begin to fit in the lock. Therefore had to cancel babysitting for my nephew because I couldn't give the dogwalker a spare key. 4) I brought it back later that week and asked for my money back. They offered to replace it -- without a suggestion of an apology -- and I explained that I'd gone elsewhere in the meantime. Only then did he agree to give me my $2.15 (I know.) back. But he was very unpleasant about it. The woman who works there is relatively pleasant, compared to her partner/husband/whatever. read more

SF Hardware is the best. Friendliest people of my life. Super cramped, full of everything I didn't know I needed. Biggest keychain collection known to man. Happy to help me find finials & lamp-shade grippers within 7 seconds, after running down Divis brandishing two lamps 5 minutes before their closing time on a Sunday. read more

They nailed it again. Needed 2 circular bulbs for my kitchen. They had them in stock and they even tossed my old bulbs for me. They were confident which made me confident. Came home and installed them and they work. No issues. 30 bucks for a 16 inch and a 12 inch but it'll be split between roommates so no biggie. Thanks again. read more

I absolutely love this place! They have everything under the sun and somehow know exactly where it is. The shelves are long, tall, and PACKED with products. I can't go in here without getting sidetracked, just looking around for something that I didn't even know I needed, because I didn't know it existed until I found it here. read more

The step stool I bought from this store was clearly broken. When I tried to return the stool, the store employee said no return. I asked to get store credit instead but he said he has to wait for the boss to come in to decide if that's okay. Finally, he said I could exchange the step stool for things of equal value so I had to spend 20 minutes looking for things to exchange it for. Overall, a really bad experience so I would not recommend this store. read more

The store is convenient, and the family ownership is very nice. On the downside, the selection is limited so you might want to call ahead. Also, some of the lesser quality tools and parts may wear out on you sooner than expected, but I imagine it's this way wherever you go. And it's great to support a neighbor instead of a giant megacorp that hires your neighbors after pushing your neighbors out of business. read more

I was looking for a very esoteric connector for my DVD and amazingly they had it in the bottom of a box of mixed wires. I was so happy. As I walked to the cashier I then found a tube of car windowshield glue which I had also been looking for. Great selection in a tiny space. read more

The last few keys they made for me did not work. When I brought them back the guy was rude and did not want to remake them because I did not have the receipt. He finally did it, and then those keys did not work either! read more

I'm standing in front of this place at 9:15 and their sign says the hours are 9-6, but it's locked up tighter than a drum. I phoned the number on their front window and it goes to an answering machine that says it's full and can't take messages. I don't suggest you rely on this business, they seem to be pretty lackadaisical. read more

mom and pops shop at it's best! very helpful and if you live within a block of the store, you can borrow a ladder, wrench, whatever.

I went in with a simple request for bolts for my license plate. I only asked where to find them and was going to pick them myself. The man came to help, but was then extremely rude after getting confused about what I was looking for because I had different sized bolts for examples. He proceeded to argue with me. When I told him I could just look for it on my own, he persisted with his bad attitude still trying to argue with me until I just left the store. I'll try one of the many other hardware stores in the area. read more

From the friendly service and the abundance of hardware supplies, this neighborhood shop as good as a mom and pop's place can get. The store owner is more than happy to answer any questions regarding home repair. I stop by here often to get a quick copy for a key or some supplies for a job around the home. read more

I live in the nopa area (still having trouble calling it that) and have to say, that aside from the liquor stores on most corners, this is by far the handiest store in the neighborhood. They have everything you need and anything you don't need, but might find a use for anyway. I guess they've been in business long enough to know what trivial crap us apartment dwellers might on the off-chance have a use for. I went in looking for a bucket and came out with the bucket, and about thirty pounds worth of miscellaneous stuff (magnetic bottle-opener, pen light, extension cord, bottle brush, mason jar, four big boxes of strike-anywhere matches, masking tape, etc...) that I would have forgotten I needed had they not been jammed onto the shelves of this little shop. It's more than a hardware store and not as annoying as Home Depot. read more

This is place is meh. Lots of low quality stuff but convenient when you don't want to wait a day for Amazon. However, they make keys that need lots of jiggling, and they open the store late. Don't show up at the advertised opening time expecting to be able to get in. I just waited 15 minutes past 9am and am heading home to order on Amazon instead. 5 other people also came and left while I've been standing here waiting for the store to open. read more

This store does not stand behind what it sells. A garden hose I bought there started springing leaks after one month, and the owner would not give a refund or credit. Very shoddy treatment, in my opinion. read more
