Pamplemousse is just the French word for grapefruit. I don't know why they named it as such and it doesn't matter. There is a counter with a glass case showing some options with things Quebecois - some crusted pies and other items. The apparent owner was very friendly and I can't remember if I started the order upon approaching the counter or if it was taken at the table. Most of the patrons eating here appeared to be local folks, which is always a good sign. Again, I ordered a club sandwich that came with potatoes. To drink, I had a Coke Zero. What I immediately noticed was that there was bottled water right at the table. For Quebec being a slice of Europe in North America, this certainly contrasted with Europe where you have to pay for quality drinking water, even though it is reasonably priced. This platter made for a tasty and filling lunch, with sensible pricing and excellent and prompt service. Everything about the Cafe Pamplemousse experience was very good, with the welcoming service standing out. Additionally, it's about 4 blocks from the intersection of Sherbrooke and Berri, yet not quite priced like things that would be in immediate proximity to that landmark intersection. Absolutely perfect crispy texture, and pillowy soft in the middle. They taste like they were twice-fried, almost Belgian-style. There is also a nice sweetness to the potato too. Real cheese curds for the poutine and though the gravy wasn't reaching the same heights as the fries, it was still good nonetheless. But to illustrate how good the fries were, my wife and I put in an order for fries alone after we shared a poutine. I can't think of any time or place I've done that before, but the fries were just that good. I only happened to come here since we were returning from the botanical gardens and it came up on a search. It's not necessarily a hidden gem as it's quite popular, but if this was more central, it would almost certainly find itself of 'must visit' lists, and it's probably a good thing that things stay the way they are.
