We went on a couples trip in October. We traveled to Washington and met up with our friends from Colorado and Tennessee. Our last two nights of our journey were spent in Seattle at the Shafer Baillie mansion. I would highly recommend staying here. The location was great for getting to downtown and all around. It is close to the Cap Hill neighborhood with shops and restaurants. There is plenty of street parking in the vicinity. The mansion itself is part of what was known as Millionaire's Row. It was built in 1914 and has been well cared for over the years. When we came back from one evening out, we all gathered in the Library and set up some charcuterie and wine to share from our travels. It was so cozy sitting all together and chatting about our adventures. The rooms are historic with modern conveniences. Our room was the Queen Ann Hill. We slept soundly in our comfortable 4 poster bed. There was a helpful step stool for me to climb up as I am vertically challenged. It has original pushbotton light switches. It had a beautiful full length mirror. There was a flatscreen TV, but we had so many wonderful activities we did not use it. The bathroom was updated but still fit with the historic look. There were two showerheads in the tiled shower. Breakfast was lovely. I, personally, have a great deal of food allergies. There was ample selection that I was able to enjoy just as much as anyone else. There were breads and pastries, jams and spreads, yogurt and fresh berries, and a hot breakfast dish. Hard boiled eggs were available as well as cheeses and meats. There was a coffee bar that was available all day that also had tea and cocoa. We sat at the long dining table enjoying each others company and conversation. We got to meet some of the other guests which added to the experience. If we find ourselves back in Seattle, this is where I will want to stay. read more

This is a review long time coming. I originally planned on having our small ceremony on a beautiful private estate. Wedding was set to be outdoors in a meadow clearing within a forest of trees and a small waterfall nearby. But I didn't consider the rainy weather in November, ill soon-to-be Mother-in-law and my own mother. So at the last minute I decided to scrap my fairy-forest ceremony :( I only had a short time to find somewhere that would allow 10 people (includes the officiant and photographer). At the time of the wedding (November 2020) there was an order in effect where no gatherings over 8 (? oops, might have been 6, heh.) were allowed. I found the Shafer Baillie on Yelp and sent an email to Ana. She was very nice and very understanding of our last minute booking request. This Tudor Revival mansion is unbelievably beautiful and well kept. My whole family was impressed. After our short ceremony, we took some photos in the courtyard and around the mansion. We did our signing in the dining hall and I wish I had our dinner party there (the other venue was great too tho!). I hope to return to Seattle for our one year anniversary and I've already told the hubs that we are staying here if we do. We've only seen photos of the rooms and I can't wait for the chance to stay in one! Thank you Ana!! Gorgeous old mansion, faithfully kept to period. I went with my wife who attended a small training session held there. Each room is different and really well appointed. Our room (Central Ballroom) was very nice, the bed was comfortable and there was a nook with a little desk. The bathroom had heated floors--nice! Breakfast included a variety of bread, bagels and croissants, smoked salmon, sliced ham, and a different baked breakfast dish every day. Prices are very reasonable for a classic property like this. The staff were welcoming and very helpful, especially Brenda. We would definitely return when we go back to Seattle! read more

We had the pleasure of reliving our wedding reception as we stayed at the mansion that we celebrated with friends eleven years ago. The space has been meticulously recreated as it was originally built at the turn of the 20th century. Every corner of the grand building brought back wonderful memories of one of the best nights of our lives. We had to reschedule our wedding three times! I contacted Ana 42 days before our wedding day and she was able to accommodate our tiny wedding with cake and champagne reception! The mansion was the perfect venue, especially for pictures. We didn't even order flowers because the mansion is so charming. Best of all, this place is a bed and breakfast so the "elopement" package included two nights in the master suite! We checked in a day early to get settled, which turned out to be perfect for having extra time for hair and make up on Saturday. The room has a very well-lighted patio bedroom with natural light perfect for make up (or kids). The bathroom shower and tub were amazing! And the room had just the right amount of space, including enough closet space to hang my wedding gown. Ana rearranged the main room of the mansion so we could have a main aisle to walk down. The garden room is great for pictures and the dining area makes for a cozy reception. It doesn't stop there either! If you are lucky, Ana will serve her berry cobbler or crustless quiche for breakfast! read more

My parents stayed here recently and had a really nice time. We were lucky enough to also get to tour the facilities so we could see how spruced up everything is. Even though we live just a few blocks from here, we'd never been inside. The new owners really did a good job renovating the place in 2004 (?) - keeping all the old world charm while making sure things like the bathrooms are updated and there are flat panel TVs in most/all the rooms. The rooms were all a pretty nice size too, even the ones on the top floor, although it's a bit of a trek to get up there, esp. if you're an older person. No elevators in this place. And the owners/caretakers were nice enough to offer us some of the breakfast leftovers even though we weren't staying there. Seemed like a nice spread - not just a couple of cereals, but also bagels, lox, casserole, Keurig coffee machines, etc. Haven't attended an event here but I'm sure it'd be equally lovely as staying here overnight. Plus for us the location can't be beat - easily walkable to everything on Capitol Hill that we love (and want our out-of-town guests to check out) - Not far from buses or Volunteer Park or even the north end of broadway. read more

The Shafer Baillie Mansion is an exquisite bed & breakfast located on the original "Millionaire's Row" in Seattle's Capitol Hill neighborhood. The facade of the Mansion (the largest home on Millionaire's Row) is attractive, but nothing prepared me for the opulence that greeted us as we crossed the foyer. The oak paneled entrance hall welcomed us into the old 14,000 square foot home. To the left was a large sitting room, its sumptuous period furnishings just beckoning guests to relax in front of the large marble fire place. Ana, one of the owners, greeted us warmly even though we were early, and led us up the grand staircase to the Capitol Hill Room, decorated in a striking combination of black and white textiles and cheerful yellow walls. While the size of our room was moderate, the luxury and comfort exceeded our expectations. The bed was cozy, the large old windows let in the perfect breeze, and the updated bathroom retained its classic style while providing modern conveniences - including a large, glass walk-in shower. My fiance was able to easily get online with the free wireless internet, and I helped myself to a chocolate and a cup of tea from the coffee and tea bar downstairs. Despite the presence of the other 4 guest rooms, (all of which were booked), we had quiet and a sense of privacy. After a late night spent exploring the Capitol Hill restaurant and bar scene we walked back to the mansion and enjoyed a restful night's sleep. In the morning we sat in the sunroom, enjoying the 'expanded continental breakfast,' which included cheeses and meats, fresh fruit, and pastries. 5 stars - for comfort, service, and location. read more

We stayed at the Shafer Baillie two nights in the end of June in the Master Suite on the second floor. My wife and I had never stayed at a bed and breakfast before, but at the encouraging of some friends, I started to look for ones in the Seattle area for the start of our trip, finding the Shafer Baillie. After reading great reviews, I booked the best room there for the first two nights of a five night Seattle vacation for my wife's 30th birthday. We were blown away. Everything about the stay was great. The bed was huge and comfy. The snacks, coffee, and breakfast was fantastic. And the tub and rib-cage shower were amazing. The suite was very large and could have easily had three or four other people in it with us, assuming some were kids. The price was in the mid $200s, but seeing how most nice hotels were around $200 a night, and all of them required $25 a day for parking, I didn't mind the price. It was in a fantastic and quiet neighborhood just outside of downtown, which made it easy to get everyone. If you are looking for a bed and breakfast in the Seattle area, give the Shafer Baillie a try, we loved it. read more

When we decided to have a small, intimate wedding of just immediate family, my (now) wife and I found it was a bit tough to find a venue in town that would be both reasonably priced, as well as accommodating. We stumbled across the Shaffer Baillie pretty early on, and from the getgo, we were impressed. The location is simply gorgeous. They have done an amazing job of maintaining this beautiful prohibition-era home. We chose to do an indoor ceremony, as we were having an early Fall wedding, and the parlor on the main level was absolutely perfect. Brenda, our main contact, was incredibly flexible with us, allowing us to arrange the space in a way that worked for our ceremony. (For the record, there is a gorgeous space outdoors where one could easily do a ceremony. We did photos out there, as we lucked out with a 70 degree day). We decided to go with the in-house catering (which is done by the owner's sister), and couldn't be happier. We served two dishes: chicken and beef tenderloin (well, three if you include the mac and cheese for our nephews) and both were outstanding. In fact, a couple of the people in our party commented that it was one of the best meals they'd ever had. How's *that* for a wedding? We decided that since the Shaffer Baillie is a B & B, as well as a venue, that we should stay there the night after the wedding (which also allowed us to have a room for my wife to get ready in). We stayed in the Master Suite which is just *awesome*. It's very spacious and comfortable. Breakfast the next morning was perfect. So there you have it. Should you stay here? Yes. Should you have your wedding (or birthday, or anniversary party) here? Yes. We are so grateful to Brenda and everyone at the Shaffer Baillie Mansion for helping to make our wedding such a wonderful day. read more

You could pay $150 - $250 per night to stay in a huge luxury hotel that could be located anywhere else in the country, so why not stay in a Seattle landmark where you can feel like a resident in this beautiful, historic, quiet neighborhood ? Shaffer-Baillie Mansion is a 30,000 s.f. Tudor mansion that has been painstakingly restored and sensitively converted to a terrific B&B. I was in town for Seattle Opera's Wagner Ring festival and the hosts, Glen and Brenda, did a great job of accommodating my ever-changing schedule. I enjoyed two of the most wonderful rooms in the house during my 6 days there, and they made it all very very easy for me. The continental breakfast is self-served in the formal Dining Room, but you'll share an informal and enjoyable time with other guests. Located in the historic Capitol Hill neighborhood, you are in walking distance of dozens of unique restaurants, pubs, and book and specialty shops. One of the coolest places you can stay in Seattle. I have been coming out here for years and I always enjoy my stay. The breakfast in the morning is delish and there is always a homemade dish that the housekeeper, Brenda makes herself. The sunroom is my favorite place to eat breakfast and get my morning started. I also love how close it is to 15th ave, Broadway, and the Pikes Market. Brenda is such a sweet lady and has been doing a great job running the Shafer Baillie mansion. What a gem in the city! The owners have meticulously restored this home to its former glory and I feel privileged to have been able to stay here on our Seattle trip. We stayed in the Southwest Ballroom on the third floor. The room was huge. We loved the comfortable King sized bed, vintage styled bathroom, and DVD player - we rented a redbox one night and relaxed in bed with a movie. The home itself is just gorgeous. Original wood everywhere and detailed trim in every room. We relaxed in the library to read about the history of the home and if we had stayed a few more days I'm sure we would have taken advantage of the living room and sunroom for reading. Breakfast was wonderful! I'm gluten free and they made sure there was alway GF bread available. Both mornings the spread included an egg dish, fresh fruit, yogurt, cheese, meats, a selection of cereals, bagels, pastries, toast, and of course coffee, tea, and juice. Brenda took wonderful care of us and made us feel like friends from the minute we walked in the door. Lastly, it's right next to Volunteer Park which was great to stroll through. We walked to Pike Place Market, it was a pleasant hourish long walk and then used Uber to get a ride back up the hill with all the goodies we purchased. All this to say, that whenever we return to Seattle we will not stay anywhere else! read more

I had the good fortune to be one of 20 people who took over the Mansion for a week-long silent retreat. The light fixtures alone were a marvel to see; the exquisite carpets on the floor and the wood-carvings on the posts added to the beautiful (and comfortable!) furniture and art work to create a totally lovely, welcoming place to spend time. There was indoor space for both walking and sitting meditation. Outside, the grounds with high hedges provided space to practice Tai Chi or QiGong or sit at small tables and enjoy the fresh air. The food was delicious, the rooms, spotless! And our hostess and her team could not have been more accommodating. Highly recommended. A genuine treat! read more

The mansion is from the early 1900s and went through a 2-year renovation a few years back. We stayed in the master suite which is very spacious and comfortable. Our room had a very large main bed room with a couple couches, plus a beautiful sun room with a day bed. The bathroom is pretty large as well. The plumbing for the shower and tub look like they are right out of the steam punk era. (side note: I could go on and on about the shower itself as it was the most amazing shower I've ever used. You could stay here JUST for the shower and it would be worth it.) This was our first time staying in a Bed & Breakfast. I think this may have set the bar too high for any other B&B. Amazing customer service here! Sooooo... My mom had to move out of her home while repairs were made after an electrician hit a water main and flooded her condo (that's the short story!) and she wanted somewhere close by and convenient. I knew she was checking in after spending the day orchestrating the removal of all her furniture, and my sister and i both live very far away so we felt like we couldn't be any help! So we thought we should try to have something waiting for her in the room, to alleviate the day's stresses, and needed in-town assistance. The important part of this story begins when I called up the Shafer Baillie and spoke with Anne the day of my mom's check-in, and she offered to PERSONALLY go out and purchase some items we discussed for us, and did she EVER come through! She put together a bottle of wine (complete with a glass and bottle opener), flowers, Seattle chocolates, and a card!! My mom was thrilled to discover the gesture, and Anne was as much a part of that as i was. I couldn't be happier with the staff at Shafer Baillie, and am happy and relieved to know my mom is staying with them!! read more

My wife scheduled this place for a simple overnight getaway for our anniversary. We just live on the eastside but wanted to get away from the ankle-biters...er...I mean kids for the night. This place is awesome. Truly had a mansion feel to me. HUGE open area when you walk in and there is a pretty cool basement/speakeasy they have (nothing going on there when we were there though). The rooms were plenty accommodating for us. It's an old house so don't expect some futuristic amenities, but everything was more than sufficient for us. The breakfast spread was great and had a combination of continental with 'made' stuff. Everything was great for my wife and I actually and they are very accommodating for varying diets. Staff was very nice and interacted well with guests. It would have been cool to have some type of gathering with the other guests, but we were there on a light night actually and not much going on. My only complaint is parking -- beware if you are out late. But this isn't a problem for the Shafer Baillie, rather just a statement of Cap Hill :-) read more

Brenda was the epitome of a welcoming hostess - even through a family emergency. Breakfast was beautiful with Ana attending, and the fresh salmon was amazing. My wife and I worked with Brenda to rent the mansion for our wedding weekend to act as both B&B and the ceremony space for our small wedding. We put up most of our family in the many rooms and everyone said how great the place was to stay. Its a beautiful old mansion with modern touches you would expect and a great host who is charming and very good at what she does. The prices were more than reasonable for the rooms and space rental for the ceremony. She offered a great breakfast every morning and was full of ideas for things to do. The venue is fantastic. The inn keeper is great and the entire experience was perfect. read more

I highly recommend this bed and breakfast. The rooms are beautiful. When I booked, I didn't have a choice as there was only one room left, but it was very nice. The breakfasts are tasty and filling, and Brenda was very friendly, helpful, and fun to talk to. Magazines, tourist brochures and games are available. Bottled water is there whenever you need it, along with coffee and tea. The area is lovely to walk around in and is near a large park. read more

My mom and I wanted to head South for two nights to Seattle for a Mother's Day weekend. We didn't want to stay downtown this time, so we explored B&Bs online. Shafer Baillie Mansion actually had a person answer the phone. Glen was so helpful taking our reservation and recommending which room would be quietest ... . He sent me written, easy directions from Vancouver, Canada, and accommodated us for an early arrival. There is more than ample written material of things to see and do in Seattle. So our journey began.... Shafer Baillie put on a beautiful spread at breakfast provided by Brenda and Glen - an assortment of cheeses, breads, beverages, organic fruit salad, granola, yogurt, layered oven-baked omelette (Brenda's specialty), cold meats ... and blueberry crisp made by Glen one morning. (Glen and Brenda are the live-in staff.) We had so much fun staying at Shafer Baillie Manson. Great service. Gorgeous setting and grounds. The work done to preserve the beauty of the old mansion/wood was spectacular. Gracious. Peaceful. Nice rooms to sit in. Lots of reading material. Wifi. Extremely comfortable beds. Clean rooms. Quiet. Gorgeous neighbourhood within walking distance of the park and the Seattle Asian Art Museum. We will be back! read more

My girlfriend and I stayed here over memorial weekend, and I've been meaning to write a review, because our experience was outstanding from the moment we arrived till we left. The building itself, both inside and out, is gorgeous and in a great location at the north end of Capitol Hill. The interior is in exceptional shape and retains a lot of history throughout, and it seems every detail has been considered. A review of Shafer Baillie would not be complete without mentioning Brenda. Her breakfasts were delicious to the point that I asked each morning for the recipe. And she was so friendly and great to talk to. Her presence added warmth to what was already a cozy stay. My girlfriend are really looking forward to a return trip! read more

Love this home! It is old worldy and the staff are warm and friendly. We enjoyed the wide staircases to all levels of amazing spaces. The staff made us feel right at home and it really was homey during our stay. So much that we felt like kids breaking curfew the first night, but no grumpy parents. We went to the ballgame and then bar hopping to celebrate my 50th. We returned late, but tried to be quiet and it was great fun to "sneak" in . My wife and I stayed at the Shafer Baillie Mansion Bed and Breakfast for 2 days to celebrate our wedding anniversary. We stayed in the Master Suite. The suite was quite spacious with a large bathroom and original shower, a study, big closets, and a large bedroom. Bed was incredibly comfortable. The surrounding area is calm and peaceful and a short walk to many restaurants and attractions. It was easy to find unrestricted street parking. . Breakfast was delicious. It consisted of breads, bagels, smoked salmon, cured meats, muffins and a baked meal (quiche one day and blueberry tart the other). The smoked salmon was super fresh and the proscuitto was some of the best we've ever had. Overall, it was a great stay. Much better experience than any hotel could provide. Next time we're in Seattle, we will certainly be returning. read more

This was our first trip to Seattle and we spent 3 nights at the Shafer-Baillie Mansion in the Southeast Ballroom. Ana did a great job restoring the inn - it is beautiful. The inn is in a great neighborhood of old mansions. It was nice having Volunteer Park right down the street - we enjoyed our time in the park. It was very convenient to be able to walk whereever we wanted from the inn and then have the bus route stop right nearby. The rooms at the inn are spacious and clean and the beds are very comfortable. Brenda, Glen, and Ana are so friendly and always came out to chat during breakfast (the breakfast was wonderful - we never left hungry!). They were also very helpful - always ready to answer questions that we had about the area. Our room was only meant for 3 people, but they accommodated our family of 4 with a rollaway bed. Our stay at the Shafer Baillie Mansion was a great way to start and end our vacation on the west coast! read more
