Love me some shaggy shag! I have been coming to Shag salon for a little over a year now and my hair has never been so long and healthy. My preferred stylist is Maddie Angle because she always does a great job of sticking to what I ask for, but making it low maintenance. She tries to take as little off the ends as possible because she knows I want the length, and with multiple visits now it's getting quite long and we've nearly cleared out all the split ends. The salon is always easy to get an appointment at, feels reasonably priced and I love that they DONT try to push products on you like at other salons. I really lean towards 60/70s shaggy layers and they nail it all the time. read more

Abel has recently stopped working weekends. The shop is also unfortunately beset by a construction project. S Lamar is down to one lane, which makes commute on bus very hard. I tried to schedule my cuts with Abel, but his weekday availability was 10-2. It's not possible for me to take hours off work for a haircut right now. I updated so you can avoid wondering why you can't book Saturdays with him anymore. The shop was very accommodating via email to cancel my haircuts. I respect his choice to have weekends off; the service industry doesn't usually allow that, but sadly, his schedule and the ongoing construction means I need to take a break and find someone closer to home. I'm so happy to be his feature for Yelp, and his instagram post a few years ago made me so happy. If you can book weekday afternoon and brave the construction, he's worth it. read more

So first off.. I'm bald so this is a very honest review because it's based on my daughter LOL! It's a few days before school starts and my daughter wanted her hair done, so in Yelpers we trust... Shaggy Hair Salon came highly recommended...the wife made an appointment for 11am.. which is perfect...when this is done we're off to eat! Once we got there you could tell this is no doubt a dope joint...the decor is hip and stylish...just bout everyone I saw there had tats (super dope since half my body is inked up...I have an appreciation for others that have them) everyone was totally friendly and you can get a beverage once you're checked in...my kinda spot! My daughter's stylist Nancy came over to greet us and off they went to the back to get things going...now while that was going on...I was checking out the whole vibe...just dope..made me wish I had my hair grown out just to get a cut! With two kids and multiple jobs life just got in the way. Let me tell you this: I will NEVER go anywhere else ever again. The environment is AMAZING. The very 70s chic vibe immediately makes me feel so chill. I was so nervous about my haircut bc i decided to try bangs for the first time in my LIFE. I had to write this review because I keep thinking about how much I LOVE my haircut, and what a positive experience I had at Shag! I came in about two weeks ago for the first time. I was really hesitant to try a new hairdresser, because I loved mine so much and I'm honestly kind of fussy. But my old hairdresser moved and I heard good things about Shag, so I made an appointment with - ~ Ash Angell ~ - for a trim (? I mean, it had been six months since my last hair cut!) Ash did a great job. They were really pleasant to talk to during the appointment, and really knew how to cut my fine, wavy hair. Really good energy. This haircut looks like a million bucks but it was less than $100. I have been seeing Katie McKenzie for about three years now and through this time my hair has not only been the healthiest it has ever been, but I have seen the salon grow in such incredible ways! Every single person there is accommodating, hospitable, and anticipates your needs before you even have to say anything. I've been coming here for a few years now and my hair has never been healthier! I always get questions around how I keep my hair so long and healthy while it also being blonder than blonde (we're talking mother of dragons, glows in the dark level blonde), and while after care is important, it's SO important to have a good salon that takes pride in their skills and products. I'm always extremely satisfied with the products they've used on my mane in the salon (lighteners, shampoos, etc.) and with what I've gotten here for at home. Speaking of take home care, I just grabbed the Olaplex 3 & 6 from their wonderful selection upfront (Kevin Murphy and Oribe to name a few) and my hair is *looooving* the rejuvenating therapy it's getting right now. I was a prospective client of this salon due to reviews and proximity to my home, but due to the extremely rude and hostile customer service of this salon I ate the (full) cost of a service rather than trust my head of hair with anyone affiliated with this salon. Sarah is the only person I will ever let touch my hair, she is a coloring expert! I had such an amazing experience at this salon, from the moment I walked in. The lobby area was very trendy, funky, and cute. The entire space has a lot of character. Everyone was extremely friendly and had great energy. I went to see Sarah, who does incredible work. It was my first time at Shag Salon and I booked with Kelly. I couldn't be happier. First impressions on walk in - I was immediately greeted on check in, offered something to drink while I waited as I was a few minutes early, and the sitting area was nicely decorated and had a chill atmosphere. Ok, stop what you are doing and run, don't walk, to see Patrick! I have been to him twice and he has put the most amazing balayage into my hair. He took the time to see what I really wanted and on my follow up visit, he even asked me about what I was using on my hair to make sure it was the right stuff and would not conflict with the color. He is so easy to talk to and it made the 4 hours (each time) go by so fast! Honestly though, I moved to ATX 3.5 years ago and just could not find someone who understood how much hair I had and actually cared about what would be the best cut for it. I see Christopher Veterer at Shag Salon and him. Christopher has been cutting my hair for over 3 years now and I have loved him since the first cut. I lived in Austin for several years but then move to San Antonio about a year and a half ago. I still drive in to see him from San Antonio so he can cut and color my hair - he is that great! I have thin, delicate, and challenging hair including a cowlick. Christopher is great with cutting my hair and also guiding me with cuts that will do well for my hair type.He always takes plenty of time to evaluate what my hair is doing before he cuts it during and after. He never rushes or encourages me to do something but I don't want to do or that he doesn't feel I will be happy with afterward. He is even professional and honest enough to discourage me from doing something that he knows I regret which I really respect. Over the years Christopher has really gained my trust and respect as a hairdresser which is why I continue to drive an hour and a half to have him cut my hair and color it. Calling all blondes, Christopher is your new stylist! I was looking for a new hair salon in Austin. After reading all the great reviews of this salon, I decided to book with Christopher. I called and let him know what to expect and he scheduled his entire Saturday to accommodate me. I have long thick hair and usually find my hair stylist exhausted after coloring my heaping head of hair, not Christopher. His attention to detail never wavered. Every strand of my hair was colored, washed, and cut to perfection. I walked in and explained my expectations for my hair and he made my dream come true. He was able to tone all yellow out of my hair and gave me the perfect champagne blonde. The technique he used allows me to wait 3-4 months before going back. Blessing for blondes! This is my second time writing a review for this salon. My first review was full of frustration and anger, but now that some time passed by and new events took place, my hope is to share my story with just facts and perhaps help someone else to avoid the situation that I found myself in. Let me start with a compliment, I have loved my hairstylist who works at Shag, he did a great job with my hair and i am sad to be looking for a new place. My frustration came from an incident that happened a few months ago. I asked the front desk person not to point the temperature gun to my head because due to past experiences that I went through, it gives me a terrible anxiety. I asked that he uses my wrist. In response to my request the front desk person laughed and said these exact words: "our salon- our rules, if you don't like it, leave." I closed my eyes and let him do his thing, against what my body was telling me was acceptble. As a result of this experience, I did not want to go back to Shag salon and I wanted to share what happened to me, so I wrote a review on Yelp. No doubt, it was angry, I own that part and I do want to apologize for that. In return, the owner of the salon posted my review on Shag salon instagram. Many people went on to compliment the owner for keeping them safe from people like me. Many went on to make fun of me and completely disregard my fear and my feelings. But not all...some people stood up for me. In return, the owner responded to my defenders by slandering me, saying, I quote his exact words: "this particular client has refused to temperature checks, mask protocols, as well as paying for services rendered. So in this incident the customer is not right but yet a liability to our business....." In addition, one of the persons who went on to defend me was my friend, who pointed out to Shag salon that this is not a way to treat a customer. Well, Shag salon blocked her from their page. I contacted my hairdresser asking why he would tell the owner of the salon that I do not pay for the services. The hairdresser said he never said anything bad to the owner about me. Which brings me to my next point. Dear Shag salon owner, I believe your name is Michael, I pay for my services, I tip well and I refer my friends. (don't take my word for it, ask my hairdresser). I wear my mask when it is mandated, the only thing I asked was that you make an exception and not point a gun to my head and if you are worried that my wrist was colder then my head, then, by any means, add a few digits to the number to make sure you are comfortable. This experience left me hopeless and sad. How far does one go to maintain the "I am right" status. The owner of Shag salon decided to slander my reputation. After talking to my attorney, I realize that there is not much I can do legally, so I am just going to ask kindly: Michael, please apologize for spreading lies about me on social media and take your untrue comments about me down. If you do so, I will update this review and let everyone who is reading this know that in the end, you did the right thing. and if you don't, I already forgave you and I moved on, but I will not be recommending Shag salon to anybody. Patrick is INCREDIBLE! I went to him worried that my hair would never be the same again. There were weird patches in my hair from a mess-up with a previous stylist, and my hair felt pretty damaged. He really listened to me when I told him what I wanted. Though I thought my fate was sealed, and that getting the hair that I wanted would be a long, dreary process of many salon visits, he magically did what I thought was impossible and gave me exactly what I wanted. They made it seem like it was completely impossible to lighten my hair. Over the phone they quoted 150-200 which I was fine with but when I went to do the consultation they kept giving me the run around and said they needed to charge me 100 bucks an hour and couldn't give me an estimate. I've been debating for months and have a commitment phobia when it comes to a hairstylist. Fortunately, she had an opening on the only free day I had out of the week.
