After that it was PAs and Nurse Practitioners. Not a problem as they were all well above average, some even excellent. 5 years of good care caused me to reccomend his practice to many. Not any more. The last 12 months I and my wife have experienced one mistake or unprofessional conduct after another. The latest caused me to break away entirely from his practice. I made an appointment as my right leg had swelled to roughly 160% its normal size. It was very red and painful. Very hot as well. I had aquire a wound on it at work a week before. It was extremely slow in healing. A friend, one who has a mutual friend that lost his leg to Cellulitis, strongly urged me to seek medical care immediately. I did my 'homework' and every symptom I was experiencing (an overall feeling of sickness, temperature changes, sweating in normal temperatures etc..) besides the obvious swelling, heat and redness led me to believe that the chances were in favor of my having contracted Cellulitis. The nurse practitioner that I was assigned at Doctor Petty's was unfriendly and uncaring. I told her of my concern. She said, no, if it was Cellulitis, your leg would be red. How red did she 'need' it to be? It was BRIGHT red. She diagnosed a possible blood clot. Fine. No one wants that. She scheduled me for a sonogram. I asked her if she would take a blood sample to determine if an infection was in my leg, and, if so, prescribe an antibiotic. "No. I'm not going to do that"; was her response. Why not? I was already there, they have a phlebotomist on staff and it was best protocol since Cellulitis can easily and very quickly cause the loss of a limb or even death. She simply would not do it. I had the sonogram an hour later. No blood clot. Two days later, I went to an emergency care clinic. The doctor there immediately took a blood sample and found an infection. Diagnosis: Cellulitis. Action: Antibiotics were prescribed. This was all done in 30 minutes. This is why I will never step into Doctor Petty's office again and why I will encourage others to avoid his practice. People deserve at least basic care. I did not receive that for from his practice for 12 months. He's fired.

For more than two decades he had been the dependable go-to-nurse in a government hospital tending to mentally disturbed patients. Since last year our son's health suffered as the cumulative effect of a punishing work condition such that he needed medical care himself. Unbelievably, Los Angeles, California, with all its reputed cosmopolitan advances and progressive pretensions, proved direly incapable of providing satisfactory medical care when needed most. It's either that doctors don't service my son's insurance coverage or that their schedules were top heavy and for many other reasons. The couple of medical providers we ultimately contracted had their own sweet times of when to engage a patient such that there were emergency situations and they would not even pick up the phone. My son's employer also has doctors but they, too, were found wanting. My wife and daughters would take turn pleading, crying over the phone asking office staffs to connect then with the doctors, to no avail. There was someone we had been addressing as "Doctor" for sometime only to find out that he's a nurse practitioner. There were instances of seriously wrong medications prescribed resulting in my son's ailment turning worse. A Texas-based daughter brought to our attention Dr. Robert Hernandez of Primary Medicine of Sherman and, boy, he's heaven sent as far as we are concerned. In the words of another daughter, Dr. Hernandez is a doctor who cares, the kind of Primary Care Physician we're looking for his brother and everyone in the family. Laymen that we are, we, nevertheless, are capable of discerning the wide chasm of difference between our sad experience with California's medical world viewed in the prism of Dr. Hernandez' humanity, very capable hands, and sincere care of patients. Friendly office staff, too. As a matter of fact, we're in the process of resettling in this part of Texas so that everyone in our family can avail of Dr. Hernandez' care and expertise. I'm sure this is only the first of our shared observations for the benefit of everyone in need of competent, patient-oriented medical provider. At our first meeting with Dr. Hernandez, we feel that he was not just a doctor of the body and mind, but of the soul, as well, because he reaches out to our deepest longing for a friend, a confidante and someone akin to family, who we are not afraid to share our deepest fears and anxieties with. We feel safe with him both physically and emotionally, confident that he is someone who will be there for us. We look forward to more productive and more meaningful association with Dr. Hernandez and we wish many more will come to know him, as well. We certainly are not putting any pressure on the good doctor with unreasonable expectations because we know that all patients at Primary Medicine of Sherman are being treated equal.
