I went to see a Dr. Shahan today for skin around my lip. He diagnosed me as having a dermatosis. He gave me a sample of ointment and lip cream to see if those work on my skin first rather than prescribing me an expensive one. He cares about your disease as well as your money. I would like to point out that Clark, one of the nurses, is a complete wizard when it comes to dealing with insurance companies. He fought very hard to get a specialty medication for me and came through quickly; even though he had to spend hours on the phone with myself and my insurance company to do so. I came from another Dr, she took a biopsy and came back inconclusive. So I was given massive amounts of prednisone which seems to work but I've been suffering for 7 months so I decided to see Dr Shahan. He examined my skin condition and had a name for it immediately. Gave me a new cream and new directions. Two days now and everything is improved. The unbearable itch is now gone and the skin is healing like he promised. Highly recommend this Dermatology office. Don't care if my insurance doesn't pay for this out of network visit. If I get better after one visit, it's all worth it. Update after one week. Basic care. Dr. Shaman brushes off my cosmetic and health concerns very matter-of-factly. His attitude is as freezing cold as his treatment room, where I sat naked under those cheap paper robes for 30 minutes waiting for an annual exam. One morning around 7am - after surgery less than 24 hours prior - I called his emergency on-call line. I received a call at 8:30 (30 minutes after the office opens) from one of his nurses. At the point, of course, I had dealt with the issue best I could, but the nurse kindly calmed my last 90 minutes of anxiety with his words, so at least his staff attempts to show some semblance of warmth. Speaking of said surgery, at the follow up the front desk lady tried to charge me for my copay. "For a follow-up appointment that I had to come back for?" so she acquiesced but threatened that I'd be charged if they did anything beyond take the stitches out. read more

I got a next day appointment and not because doctor is not busy but because office staff and him are very efficient - he has many patients and appointment is short but he will address your concerns without trying to sell extra services or unnecessary procedures. I got a prescription for a noninvasive treatment for melasma and will get a follow up in a couple months. I think consultation is a little pricey however other doctors may charge more or give you an appointment 2 months away from the time you call, so overall I am satisfied and hopeful to fix my skin issue read more

I went in today to see Dr. Shahan to get something on my lip checked out. Making an appointment was easy, they made it a week in advance which was pretty quick considering I was a new patient. I was late because I got lost, but they still saw me which was really great. The front desk staff was awesome and really helpful. I waited maybe 5 minutes before calling me back. I saw a nurse first and explained what was going on and then saw Dr. Shahan within 5 minutes of going in the room. He removed the thing on my lip right away and it was quick and painless. He correctly identified and removed some pre-cancer on my head I had previously brought to the Dr.'s attention, but the Dr. dismissed it as psoraisis and gave me medicated shampoo. I always ask to see Juan Kojima as I trust his expertise, knowledge and thoroughness. He also found several other pre-cancer spots on various locations which are hard to see, once he educated me on what to look for, I found additional spots. Dr. Shahan is personable and probably one of the most knowledgeable dermatologists I've met. I don't know any other dermatologist that also went to pharmacy school. I've also never had a problem with making payment on my office visits, but I have insurance and I don't ask for free treatment from a business that does not offer it. I do know plenty of physicians in my business (I work in clinical research management), and there are more people trying to take advantage of the system these days. It can be hard to operate a private practice within the present healthcare system let alone cater to everyone who would do what they could not to pay for treatment. Some of the best things in life may be free but private healthcare is not one of them. If you want free treatment, there are definitely places for that in this city, but if you can afford to pay for excellent treatment then go here. read more

I was diagnosed with skin cancer. The day before the surgery the office called me to tell me that I had to pay $600 up front or they wouldn't do the surgery. When I told them that I didn't have $600 and could I please arrange to make payments the office staff said they'd talk to the doctor and call me back. She called right back and said the doctor refused to do the surgery unless I had the money up front. I can't believe a doctor would refuse to treat someone with cancer because I can't pay up front. I have insurance and just have to get a loan for the deductible from my employer. This doctor is completely without compassion. Horrible. I will never go back and recommend that you don't either. read more

Booking an appointment using the online ZocDoc app was easy. Staff was friendly, professional and courteous. My wait was under 10 minutes. Dr. Shahan and his assistant had excellent bed side manner listening to all of my concerns and then performing a full body evaluation explaining any anomaly he came across and whether or not it was benign. He advised treating some questionable lesions on my nose, describing exactly what the treatment would entail and giving me a quote given my insurance would not entirely cover it. I was made to feel comfortable appreciating the advance explanation of treatment and cost; I trusted Dr. Shahan's judgement and we scheduled a follow up to perform the treatment in a month. I feel guilty for not giving a five star review for Dr. Shehan and his staff before now. My wife and I have been seeing Dr. Shehan and his wonderful staff of nurses for over a year. A year ago Dr. Shehan removed a basal cell skin cancer from my forehead using the Mohs technique in which only the actual skin cancer is removed, not a lot of tissue around it, leaving an excellent cosmetic result as well as getting rid of the cancerous cells. For the last week I have been experiencing a painful callous on my left foot. I tried to schedule a podiatrist appointment with my HMO, and the earliest I could be seen was mid-November. When I called Dr. Shehan's office, I was given an appointment the very next day. I was fortunate to have a Nurse Practitioner named Kelly work on the callous (I believe she did the stitches on my forehead with the excellent results discussed above). In the case of this callous, she scrapped away and found something black or brown that was probably an embedded nettle or splinter I picked up working outside. She was careful and gentle when she removed the foreign object. Today (Sunday after the Friday when the procedure was done), the callous is totally pain free and is skin color again. Every nurse working for Dr. Shehan is extremely careful and gifted at what they do. Dr. Shehan is a kind and caring person and is the best dermatologist we have seen. I have waited over a year to write this review because I wanted to be sure.
