Insurance Concerns and Lack of Transparency I'm deeply disappointed in my experience with Dr. Thomas. This was my first-ever skin check following the loss of my mom to melanoma in December. I came into the appointment nervous and unsure of what to expect, and Dr. Thomas was aware of this. Toward the end of the appointment, he examined a very small cut on my hand (smaller than the tip of a pencil). When I mentioned that I wasn't sure of the cause, but likely my puppy, he reached for a freeze/ice spray, saying it would help him better evaluate the cut and aid in healing. At no point was I informed that this would be a billable procedure outside of my routine skin check. I would never have consented had I known it would incur an additional cost--especially for something as minor as a tiny cut that was not suspicious, not a mole or freckle, and certainly not related to my skin cancer screening. It would have healed on its own. Now, not only do I fear skin cancer, I have to be now be afraid of a shady dermatologist taking advantage of my annual skin check to make a couple extra bucks from the insurance company. I respectfully urge Dr. Thomas to reconsider this billing practice. Patients deserve full transparency about costs before any non-routine procedures are performed. read more

I had an allergic reaction to something and my typical allergy meds didn't fix the bumps and itching of my skin. I was glad that they had a same day availability to see me. After filling out the paperwork, I was taken to a room by the nurse. She asked what my issue was which I spelled out already on the form. But went over it again. Then she gave me a paper gown to wear for the doctor to check my skin. I waited in that cold room wearing a paper gown for 55 minutes. If I hadn't stuck my head at 45 minutes out to complain, I'm sure I would have been waiting for 90 minutes. So finally the female physician came in with the nurse who asked me all the questions before. She asked ALL the same questions the nurse asked. Then she told me that she's not sure what the issue is. She prescribed a super expensive steroid medication lotion. As I'm very expressive and she clearly knew how upset I was, she gave me some samples of gentle soap and lotion. Then told me to come back in 2 weeks. Since I wasn't happy with the wait time and the fact that I came to what's supposed to be a specialist who didn't know what my allergic reaction was. So canceled the second appointment as I didn't want that irritation to repeat. I don't know if this was a one time fluke but I won't be coming back. read more

I booked an appointment with Dr Dupree over 3 weeks ago for botox via their online booking system (and after confirming via phone that these appointments were available for botox). Got a cancellation the day prior with no explanation to why it's being cancelled. Called the office and they said the appointment was not available for this service even though they confirmed prior to me booking the appointment that it was 3 weeks prior. Not very friendly staff, no offer to try to accommodate just saying it's a system error and they have no other appointments until a month from now. I've always loved the service provided by Dr Dupree but after this treatment by the office I will not go back unfortunately. read more

I booked a 315 apt and was told to show up a few minutes early for paperwork. Basically 1 short "Do you have these Covid symptoms?" form. 30 seconds later back in my seat waiting 30 minutes. Asked about the delay and was told the apt was actually at 330 they had just told me 315 so i would show up 15 minutes early for that paper. Doctors always run late, and I had buffered in 30 extra minutes in my schedule for that but for a 315 not a 330. They admitted they gave me the wrong time on purpose to "check in" and wait in an increasingly crowding lobby for no real reason. Maybe for their convenience but certainly not mine. I watched others who apparently knew the trick show up when their appointment really started. Lots of other Dermatologist also in this very building, go somewhere else or get clear when your appointment really starts and come then. Your time is worth something too...just saying. read more

Dr. Dupree literally saved my life when she found, and successfully removed, the melanoma growing on my skin that within the following six months would have began spreading to my lymph nodes. I am at high risk for skin cancer: 1) Family history of melanoma, 2) dozens of atypical moles across my body, 3) always have lived in sunny places and suffered many sunburns. I usually get annual skin checks, but when I first moved out to San Diego five years ago, I put it off.. I eventually found Dr. Dupree in April 2018, and she immediately found two suspect moles on my body and performed a biopsy. She discovered one that was atypical but not yet malignant, and the other which had become melanoma in situ..! Her prompt and accurate response lead to the removal of the cancer. She informed me that if I had waited another six months, it could have potentially began spreading through my lymph nodes! I have friends who's relatives have died from melanoma! I AM SO THANKFUL FOR DR DUPREE! I am so thankful for modern medicine and being told by my family and peers to get annual checkups over the years! Three years later I am happy to report I am cancer free and no more abnormal growths have developed! I can't thank everyone at North County Dermatlogy enough for their service to me these years and helping me avoid the awful pain of cancer. Dr. Dupree saved my skin!! I began suffering from hormonal cystic acne early on in my college career and went through multiple dermatologists. One suggested doing extractions in which did not solve the issue long-term but rather it gave me horrendous scarring as I have a naturally tan complexion. When I went to Dr. Dupree she assured me that extractions were not the solution for somebody like myself and put me on a regimen that SAVED me. I have never been happier with my skin, I never break out at all anymore (knock on wood), and I am absolutely obsessed with my current regimen. She is the best!!! This place is an absolute joke. We tried twice to take our daughter for a strange bump on her forehead which is already stressful enough and both times they insisted that we be there 20 minutes early to fill out paperwork. We made sure to bring the paperwork in the 2nd time after they told us we wouldn't need to arrive early, we arrived on time and they still turned us away. If you need someone to arrive to every appt 20 minutes early for absolutely no reason then just set the appt for the time you want them to be there. Horrible experience. read more

A good dermatologist is hard to find and when I moved to north county I was so blessed to have found Dr. Dupree!! She is the best! She listened to me and helped me plan my treatment options!! I came here to do a full body scan several years ago and really liked their office, staff, and care I received from Dr. Dupree. I had a mole removed from another dermatologist a year prior and wish I had been under the care of Dr. Dupree then because I was not happy with the procedure I had there. It felt SO REFRESHING to meet Dr. Dupree. I immediately felt comfortable with her recommendations and the medical care she provided. 3 months ago, I sought the help of Dr. Dupree after experiencing some acne breakouts I never had before. We had changed medical insurance so she was no longer in my network but I trusted her so much, decided to pay cash for her services. It was worth every penny. She said it would take 3 months to clear up and sure enough, it was 3 months exactly. I haven't had any flare-ups and with the help of my esthetician at a different location, the scarring is slowing fading. yay! Unfortunately, I can't continue to see Dr. Dupree regularly until we move back to an PPO but the moment we do, I'll be switching back over to Dr. Dupree - that's how much I trust her. After seeing my new dermatologist, whom is very professional and covered through my plan, she isn't Dr. Dupree. ; ) I highly, highly recommend Dr. Dupree. Booked an appointment with Dr. Dupree to consult about acne prescription. Arrived 12 minutes late for the appointment due to unforeseen traffic. Receptionist would not allow me to meet with doctor and cancelled my appointment. I had already met with Dr. Dupree twice already, had blood work done and was cleared for the prescription. Why it was necessary for a third appointment? Then, to have it cancelled, was unprofessional. Find another dermatologist. read more

I went to see Dr. Thomas for a consult on getting sclero-therapy on some spider veins. My husband had previously visited him to have an annual skin check-up to make sure there was nothing suspicious. He really liked him, so it seemed like the natural choice to see him. Dr. Thomas, although busy addressed all my concerns and made me feel very comfortable and not rushed at all. He even took the time to speak to me about a some anti-aging measures for my face. I tried Botox ( admittedly a minute amount) for the first time by my eyes and "11" lines and I have to say I am extremely pleased with the results. The prices were very reasonable and billing was clear. Office staff are all very nice and efficient. They are receptive and kind! I will update once I return and complete my vein treatment. Parking was a bit chaotic so go early. Large amount of parking but busy. read more

I absolutely LOVE Dr. Dupree!! Nobody loves going to the doctor but Dr Dupree is one of those doctors that puts you at ease and makes you feel totally comfortable and taken care of. She took true time with me even when I was asking a lot of questions about things other than what I came in for. She was attentive and never felt rushed or bothered, completely happy to answer any silly question I had. Being new to the area, I chose to go with Dr. Dupree based on her great reviews. I am sad to say I won't be returning. Her staff is great and she's very nice, too but I could've gone to a spa instead. I had many questions to address and she answered them at first but then simply told me I should speak to the aesthetician instead. I understand this is part of the business, but I made an appointment with a doctor and was looking for the dermatological point of view. I also asked about post-partum skin concerns and she told me I should go to a plastic surgeon rather than explaining the process the skin goes through and what to possibly expect. After years of tanning beds and not wearing sunscreen, I knew I needed to get my skin checked. I made an appointment using ZocDoc and it was very easy and I was able to get in to see Dr. Dupree in a little under a week. The office is clean and they are taking all of the precautions to protect their staff and patients during the COVID-19 pandemic. The girl who checked me in was also the person I spoke to when the office called to confirm my appointment and insurance information. She was fast and very kind in both my phone and in person interactions with her. She took my temperature, handed me the forms to fill out and took my cards to copy. Very seamless process. Sadly, I can't recall her name but she was great! Elizabeth came and got me at exactly my appointment time and set up in the room. She had me wash my hands and explained that they clean the room from top to bottom between every patient. I was very nervous and immediately started to tear up when I sat down. Even through her mask, she put me at ease. She explained what would happen when the doctor came in and left the room while I changed into my gown. Dr. Dupree came in shortly after and addressed all of my concerns. She was reassuring, attentive and thorough making sure to talk me through everything she saw and why she wasn't concerned about it as well as what would be concerning so I could keep an eye out going forward while Elizabeth took thorough notes to give me for my post op review. She explained the importance of wearing sunscreen but not in a condescending way at all, just as a doctor genuinely guiding their patient. All in all, I had a wonderful experience with everyone I encountered at North County Dermatology Center and I would highly recommend Dr. Dupree! read more

On 4/1/2019 I was seen by Dr. Thomas for Dermatitis On this visit Dr. Thomas gave me a steroid shot and discussed starting me on Dupixent for Dermatitis. He stated it was "A game changer" and that it would take two weeks to get the prescription because of the insurance company. I returned two weeks later for a follow up visit, Dr Thomas asked me how I was doing with the Dupixent. I told him I haven't heard anything yet, regarding the prescription. He stepped out of the office and quickly returned stating "We are still fighting the good fight". Insinuating that my insurance company was making things difficult. The minute I left the office I called my insurance company and they stated that they have not received anything from North County Dermatology. I immediately called North County Dermatology back to let them know my insurance company had not received any documentation from their office and at that point I was transferred to Elizabeth. She stated the following. "I've been dealing with a sick kid and I am handling it now". I immediately lost faith in the office. 1. Dr. Thomas lied. 2. Nothing gets done regarding prescriptions if Elizabeth has a family issue? In short because of the office's incompetence, the prescription was delayed two weeks longer then it needed to be. I returned to the office to have a squamous carcinoma removed, because of my lack of faith in Dr. Thomas and the office as a whole my heart rate was to high to perform the procedure and Dr. Thomas cancelled it. On his way out of the office he stated the following. "I want you to know that I hate cancelling surgery because I lose a lot of money." I wad dumb founded by that remark. I called the office back to express my concerns and was transferred to Karla, when I shared my concerns with her, she took a dismissive tone and laughed as I ended the call. After deep consideration I felt that Dr. Thomas and his office acted negligent regarding my best interest as a patient and as a provider for my insurance company. My next step is to write a formal complaint to the Medical Board Of California. read more

My family has been nothing but pleased with Dr. Dupree and the staff at North County Dermatology Center. My sons started going for acne treatment and I came in for a skin check. During the second check, Dr. Dupree felt it necessary to biopsy a spot on my face. Turns out it was melanoma. She made a point to get a hold of me personally to talk it through before she left on a trip. She was extremely kind and compassionate and encouraging. Great bedside manner. She referred me to a plastic surgeon that takes my insurance to get the larger area removed and closed up. It's funny, I read a review speaking of how cold the room was but I felt it was a tad bit warm. Just goes to show we all have our own preferences and you can't please everyone! On a sidenote, the doctor she recommended for my procedure was also amazing. He scheduled a Saturday appointment, which he normally doesn't do, because I have a heavy travel work schedule at the time. He is very clear and accommodating. Took my daughter to see Dr Dupree for mild acne based on the high reviews. Maybe it was an "off" day for her but I found her to be brash, cold and stiff. There was nothing "warm and fuzzy" about her. The office visit was uncomfortable for both myself and my daughter. She quickly wanted to prescribed oral medications or even birth control to clear up her acne and seemed bothered by the fact that I didn't want to go that route. Anyways, my mother in law who is an esthetician, ordered my daughter an OxyDerm wand and it cleared up the acne quickly. There are many dermatologist in the area. I would never recommend this one. I had quite the unfortunate experience at this facility on Tuesday, October 16th, 2018, so I contacted the office manager via email to inform her of my encounter on the same day; as I'm not just a scorned customer who post negative revenge reviews. I always try to see if I can resolve such issues in private however its been nearly a month and no response. Maybe she quit and her emails didn't transfer over to the new manager, maybe they're unprofessional, maybe they don't care about providing poor customer service. Regardless I will post part of my email and maybe I will finally get a response? I am not a patient at your facility, however, I did make an appointment two weeks ago took off work and drove all the way to the appointment filled out all the paperwork just to be told that you all were not in network with my insurance. What a waste of time. This is my problem. When I made the appointment two weeks ago I provided my address, phone number, and insurance information to the receptionist and she confirmed that North County Dermatology was in network with Healthnet. You all had two weeks to verify my insurance and contact me to let me know that you are not in network with my plan. From my understanding, you all are in network with all major PPO's, however, there is an exception when it comes to Healthnet specifically covered California. In my experience as a Medical Receptionist and a Referral Coordinator, it is best practice for the receptionist to verify insurance before the appointment occurs to avoid situations such as these. Although I understand that, that might not be possible or practical for every facility, however, one would hope that if there is a special caveat for one certain PPO it would be standard to check. Given my background, in the medical field, I know what it is like to have patients want everything done for them. This is not one of those cases. I called my insurance company to confirm that I could see any provider as long as they are in network with healthnet. You all dropped the ball on this one, and in conclusion.
