Tacos were great - had the ono. The sweet mango sauce is awesome, just a bit of heat. Definitely get the magma sauce on the side if you like spicy. Service was efficient and friendly. Make sure you get the pork quesadilla - sweet and spicy pork with a great consistency cooked to cheesy perfection! You place your order at the counter and then pick up out of a food truck. Wow! Just awesome! Let's start with pulling in, we were fortunate and got a spot right in front this afternoon. Easy to pull in and later exit. Front is the the famous blue bus and now building right next to it, I mean butted up right next to it. Walking in, you see various decks, a couple tv's, a de huge tables for the larger parties or multiple small parties. We were immediately greeted by Marsell this afternoon, hope I spelled it correctly. Let me just say he was hands down awesome. Was able to answer our questions for the party of 6, extremely friendly and courteous, my kids loved him, he even named a couple geckos with my daughter (one Shaka and the other Tacoz). We got our order in, 1 burrito with steak, 2 keiki chicken tacoz, 3 ono fish taco plates, and some drinks. Food came out with nice timing and we were notified via text message. The food was outstanding! Son loved his burro, the keiki chicken tacoz plates were also loved, and the ono fish tacos were down right awesome. I am always skeptical that 3 tacos will fill me up, but these did just that. At first glance, might've seemed a bit small, but in the end I was stuffed. The tortilla was not flimsy, had nice texture in the bite, was able to hold the contents nicely, and had a nice cheese flavor. I had mine with everything it comes with and just the mango side sauce. The side sauce had a great sweet flavor with a small bite at the end. Enough to make you want more. The toppings all worked perfectly with each other. The pickled red onions, fresh lettuce, slaw, delicious shaka sauce, and cilantro all added to a over all taste that had me wanting more and more. Some of the most amazing fish tacos I have ever had. I'm giving 4 stars because the chips and salsa are sub-par. Chips are stale, need salt, and should be served warm! Back to the amazing fish tacos- we came here on Taco Tuesday ($2 off taco plate!) after snorkeling Two Step. Came here to try the Ono fish tacoz and ended up adding their Ono fish quesadilla recommendation plus spicy pork tacoz. Both tacoz had a good balance of freshness, crunch from the pickled onions, and their own special sauce. My husband preferred the Ono fish over the spicy pork. My favorite was the quesadillas! We were hesitant to come here as the menu is limited and I didn't like the sound of cheese on the tacos, but the tacos were really good. They are full of so many different flavors. The toppings were delicious and the mango salsa added a perfect sweetness. 3 tacos fills you up and makes you want to return another day. Bring your water bottles or you will need to pay for a bottle of water. No free water. We went in the middle of the afternoon and the place was full. Vibe- chill TV seems to always be playing Baywatch Food: all good but tends toward quite spicy. THIS PLACE HAS GREAT FOOD! the options are plentiful, the flavors are amazing, the service was great, it was clean and the wait time wasn't bad at all. i looked at the three tacos i'd ordered and thought there was no way i'd be able to eat them all. i was wrong. i couldn't stop. and i didn't feel uncomfortably full when i took my last bite, the salsa options are great because people can choose their level of heat or chile preference and the ingredients were all very fresh. there was a great street art collection of skateboards hanging all over the walls indoors and the outside back patio has sweeping views although there's only a handful of stools and it fills up quickly. indoor seating allows for about 7-8 different parties, with adequate spacing in between or i bet you could take your order to go, if you have the willpower to withstand the smells wafting from the containers as you drive away. this was a place i don't at all regret eating at; it might be one of the food highlights of our weeklong stay. and while i'll still seek out other places to try with less reviews or local fame in the time we're here, i'd say there's a clear reason why shaka tacoz is as highly rated as it is. don't deprive your taste buds on that account. read more

We initially drove by Shaka Tacoz but then did a sketchy U turn to grab some tacos. For a Friday night, the shop was relatively quiet with a number of patrons quietly eating. We ordered four taco plates to share and had an assortment of fish, steak, chicken, and pork tacos. All in all, the consensus was that the chicken was the best but they all sort of tasted the same. I had a few people tell me I should eat here while on my trip to the big island...like most everyone I'm a huge taco lover so me and my wife figured we would give it a shot. The day we drove by here and stopped was sadly a day they weren't open (Wednesday I think) so we didn't get to eat here that day. We happened to head back by the next day and grab lunch here. The menu is pretty straight forward and as I was looking the cashier was telling my wife his favorite was the "spicy pork"...I like spicy tacos so that's what I ordered and my wife had the fish tacos I'll say that they were both good and the spicy came from a glaze sauce that they put in with the tacos. My wife said her fish tacos were good and I thought mine were good except for the fact they fry the soft shells and mine were very tough due to that. Almost too tough to chew in some places. The taco itself didn't really have much flavor except for the sauce they give you either. Keep in mind I only ate here once so it's always a hit or miss as far as if my food was a one off or if it's always that way. Maybe some more reviews can confirm or deny if they are always like this. Aside from the food I will say they had a neat patio area outback that apparently has some lizards living there that you can watch while waiting and while eating. The business is located on the side of the main road which makes parking hard to pull in and back out. A back-up camera is almost a must if you park on the restaurant side and not just on the side of the road across the street. This is apparently at 2 locations and both are food trucks. This sit down location is a store front with a food truck parked in the front you get your food from. read more

Coming from San Diego, my taco standards are pretty high. Seeing the reviews from Shaka Tacoz and having heard about it through friends, I decided it must be worth trying. The service here is great. Big smiles and friendly staff made the first impression really nice. We decided to try a little of everything and both agreed that the chicken taco was the best flavor. It reminds me of chicken tinga. The carne asada had a funky taste and I'd pass on ordering it again. And the fish taco was pretty good. I was disappointed to discover that they serve their tortilla chips out of a bag and their beans out of a can. Both of these are easy and cheap to make fresh and would make a big difference in quality. Will I come back? Yep I sure will because the prices are good and the food comes out fast. read more

Pretty good Mexican food in Captain Cook. If you're lucky enough to grab one of a handful of seats outside overlooking the ocean, the view is fantastic. Inside, the seating is large picnic style tables that you may end up sharing with others. You order your food inside and grab from the food truck right outside. The gentleman working the night I went was super friendly and on top of everything. More establishments need workers like him. The steak quesadilla was loaded with steak. A little disappointed in the steak burrito. There were black beans and refried beans. Along with the rice, it made for a very starchy and unfortunately bland burrito. The perfect spot to sit and relax after a day of snorkeling in South Kona. They have indoor seating and an outdoor patio. The outdoor seating offers stunning views of the ocean. But beware of the gecko tax. The geckos may be considered as a non-native, non-invasive species, but they're not shy. Fully expect them to try to grab a bite! There's a reason why the trash cans inside all have lids. Onto the food. It was delicious! Coming from Southern California, I thought I knew my way around a burrito, but the Asada Burrito I ordered was unlike any that I've had before.  The asada was cooked well but it was the slaw and sauces that really set it off. It had that Hawaiian sweetness that you'll find in much of the cuisine and it was great. The mango salsa was also a great complement. The food comes out of a truck on the side, but don't let that discourage you. I'll be back every time I'm on the Big Island. read more

I first heard of this place about a year ago and wanted to wait a bit for them to establish a "reputation." Why? Well, 1) I only come home to visit a few times a year; and 2) coming from O'ahu, taco trucks/stops are pretty common in the metro Honolulu area (so, I may be a little biased). I have to admit these tacos were the bomb! I ordered two fish and one veggie, both of which came packed with filling (pickled veggies, lettuce, carrots, some kind of special sauce, and guacamole). I really appreciated that the fish was in one piece so the taco didn't fall apart, and it's taste really came through despite all the toppings. What stole the show for me was the veggie taco! It consisted mainly of seasoned broccolini and quinoa, but OMG did it pack some nice flavor! And if that wasn't enough for my taste buds, I also had their salsa verde and medium hot salsa. Both very good! Overall, I was really impressed by the quality of tacos and their well executed flavors. You need to stop here and get the Ono fish tacos, best fish tacos I have ever had and I've had them all over the west coast. Fish is cooked perfectly with delicious seasonings. Tortillas were perfect consistency. The toppings were all crispy and fresh. Finally the sauce and the salsa are incredible. My friend that lives on the island was shaming me for driving by without stopping and I now see why. This place is definitely more American and less Mexican. Ordered fish tacos and spicy pork burrito. Meat was underseasoned at best. Other than the magma salsa, which is a sweet/slightly spicy mango sauce, the salsas were not good. Too acidic and not enough seasoning, missing something for sure. Fish tacos were good, but I think the salt from the melted cheese seasoned the fish just enough to give it a good flavor. I especially liked the take of pickled veggies on the taco and burrito. It's a different twist. Maybe I'm biased, I grew up in Los Angeles where Mexican food and many other Latin American food is widely available and at the top of its game. So the flavors weren't bad. But it just wasn't mexican If youre hungry this isn't a bad place to go. Food seems fresh and staff is friendly. Portions are good. This spot serves your traditional street taco's. We went on taco Tuesday, so it was $1 off each taco. They were good, but took VERY long to get the order. When it finally was ready, the food was cold. 3 people were in the party and we all had different taco's, but each were cold. They did have a help wanted sign on the food truck - kind of a cool set up. You order online or over the phone (or in person at the counter) but pick up the food outside at a food truck. This was a great surprise we stopped into on a rainy day on the big island. The server recommended the tacos for us and they were delicious. Located in the small town of Captain Cook (about 30 minutes south of Kona), the tacos are the real deal. I've been dying for Mexican and this place fit the bill. The wife and I each has the 3 taco plate. Me: two chicken and a pork. The wife: two pork and a fish. The tortillas were excellent, the fillings were generous and tasty, and the view of the ocean from the patio was gorgeous. The chips and salsa for $5 is a waste of money as the salsa is not very good but don't let that deter you.
