I live in Norwood now, very close to Shake It's main "competition", but I nearly always make the drive across town to visit what is probably my favorite record store in the country. I was a steady customer then moved to Columbus for college so my visits we're much less frequent but someone always asked me "How's school?" " How's Used Kids?" (which they turned me on too, etc. ) In fact, the last time I was in they told me to check out the new vinyl store ( Black Plastic) down the street, which I though was cool. Being nice is one thing but you have to have the goods also & they do & at fair prices. When I've traded stuff back they've always given me a fair price. All & all, its always a fun experience & I'm always looking forward to my next trip back. read more

Shake it is one of the coolest places in the city. If my memory serves me correctly, Shake it has been rated in the top three of record stores in the U.S. Since I don't have a record player I go their for magazines, cds, dvds, books, postcards, and unique gift items. They have used cds as well at discounted prices. Though I've never made it out to one, Shake it will occasionally have live music despite the tight quarters. All and all this is an inspirational Cincinnati anomaly. read more

I feel like review is superfluous, because everyone knows how awesome this place is. I will say that I buy my CD's here now because I have been burned on only having digital copies before and because it is local. I like that you can just ask them for a CD and they will get it for you in a few days. I do wish the CD's were a little easier to find, but the staff is so helpful it doesn't really matter. I could go on for days about this place. It's a true throwback for an old soul like myself. I still prefer all of my music on vinyl if it's possible, so this place is obviously right in my wheelhouse. They have you covered in every genre of music on vinyl/cd/dvd etc., and if they don't have it, they will get it for you in a day or two if it's available. You can buy t-shirts, speakers, record players, books, and they literally have every single magazine that has to do with music. You can also purchase tickets to live local music around town that is not at say, Riverbend or US Bank. More local shows that would be at places like the Woodward Theatre. Last but not least, the staff is awesome. They know their music, they are friendly, they are out in the local community seeing bands. They are all around good people and what you would expect for such an awesome staple for music in Cincinnati! read more

I've learned to appreciate this place a lot more when I'm craving a CD, but don't want to search online and wait for one to arrive in the mail. Absolute great collection of vinyl records. The whole downstairs is heaven for anyone with the obsession for collecting vinyl. The prices are a bit high, but the selection is phenomenal. They have some very rare records which are hard to find other places. I love the fact that they have a listening station, so you can preview your music before you buy. By far one of the coolest record shops I've been to! 2 stories packed full of music, CDs on one floor and vinyl downstairs. They also had a great selection of used music equipment both entry level and high end speakers and receivers. Great record store! This is really my favorite record store in Cincinnati. Located in the Northside area, this place has a huge collection of new and (a really good selection of) used CDs. The star of the show for me though is the still rapidly expanding basement which is just filled with all kinds of vinyl, new and used galore. The selection is always changing and they don't tend to restock vinyl that isn't very popular, but the staff is more than happy to order that odd album in for you if they can find it. read more

My girlfriend and I were out of town visiting Cincinnati for a day. A friend recommended that we stop by here while in town. When we walked in, no one greeted us. The selection was fantastic, however the service was not. My girlfriend wasn't feeling well, and went upstairs to ask to use the restroom. The woman working the register rudely said "someone's in there", and just stared at my girlfriend as if she was a nuisance for waiting. She didn't even explain that there was a key to the bathroom. After about seven minutes, she gave up. We went to pay for my records (I spent 50 dollars), and I asked what was going on with the bathroom. She didn't even seem to care, and my girlfriend was visibly sick. As we exited the store, we said "thank you", and we weren't even acknowledged by her. Will not be returning. read more

Giving them 4 stars because they don't keep common records in stock very often. They've been around for a long time. Good deals on vinyl. Nice selection of CDs and Vinyl... Sometimes. They'll order stuff for you though, although it takes a while to get it in. They also need to stock more kid robot toys. Their current selection is old. They never get current item blind box toys in anymore! read more

Great place to get music. Had an urge for some classical music, but they don't carry that line. However, they carry everything else, selection was good, items were grouped well and most artist were found, price was from $6 used to $16 new double cd's. Didn't look at vinyl as i gave away my turntable a few years back when I got tired of carrying them each time I moved. Found a nice pair of used polk speakers at a good price as well. I will return in the future for more music. read more

I can't say enough good things about Shake It Records. For starters, the staff is super friendly and eager to help. The selection is incredible. They have tons of new and used CD's, large varieties of magazines and books, t-shirts on the walls, even a bunch of awesome toys-- but what is really impressive is the vinyl. All of the vinyl is downstairs, divided into new and used sections and organized by genre. I visited the store often when it first opened and thought that to be its starting point however the variety and selection of recordings has slowly become more mainstream. If it's of any consequence, the graphic novel selection has grown. I find that over time its been more of a hit or miss scenario with respect to finding something that I really want. A 5 star comment would be that I've always been treated fairly whenever trading or selling in my old CD's. The last thing that I want to mention is that this store has the most horrific original artwork of anything that I have ever seen, so you may want to carry a bottle of Maalox with you. read more

My God. Talk about great stores. Shake It! Records is a Cincinnati institution! I'm sure you've read about all the accolades awarded to it but this is one of those times where you really should believe the hype. They have an amazing selection of new and used CDs, vinyls, and DVDs. They have tons of stuff at bargain prices and, I'm not entirely sure if they still do this, but a $10 section as well filled to the brim with must-own material. The two floors of this wonderful establishment are simply overflowing with something for you to find whether it be a $2 aerobics record from the 80s or a cute vinyl doll from the imagination of a highly-eccentric Japanese artist or a sweet shirt to go along with the timeless record you just bought. They also have a wide array of magazines, books, and comics, many of which are hilarious (Haggis-On-Whey anyone?), and a super-friendly, non-elitist staff to help you out or chat it up with you if you wanna talk music or whatever. I can't recommend Shake It! highly enough. If you live in Cincinnati, and you haven't been here yet, then what are you waiting for? Best record/CD shop ever. I love the big places around the country, and hit stores everywhere I travel and Shake It moved right to the top yesterday. The Americana section is stunning and my haul was along the lines of what I might pull at Amoeba, without being overloaded with volume (not a hit at Amoeba, just stating the differences). Located in what appears to be an up-and-coming area in Cincinnati - and worth every trip I ever make to the area. Great place. read more

My first yelp review has to be for Shake It! Records because it is the best pound-for-pound record store in the country. Proprietors Jim and Darren Blase really know how to pack a lot of goodness into a relatively small space. Your senses will be overloaded as soon as you walk in the door and you'll forget what you went there for in the first place. Don't fret, though, because you are likely to leave with music you never knew you wanted...no...needed. If you're there for records, go downstairs and talk to Billy, the record guy. He'll help you find what you're looking for and he won't snicker when you ask for that Jamiroquai 12" you've been looking for (at least not to your face). If CD's are more your bag, be sure to go through the used bins. It's nice going through a used CD section without having to flip through 20 copies of R.E.M.'s "Monster". They also have rock tees, vinyl toys, lots of hard to find books, DVDs, music supplies, paper goods, and magazines. Oh, and they accept gift cards from the big box stores. read more

I started coming to shake it when they only had a few dozen new vinyl records for sale, around 2004. They now have the whole basement devoted to vinyl records. Good selection of new and used cds/vinyl. The staff are great. Good music recommendations. The prices are comparable to Everybody's Records, and sometimes a little bit more expensive, other times a bit cheaper. I shop at both stores, but Shake it is more fun to shop at. read more

After calling to ask if they bought used record players, to save us a drive out there if not, we were told of course they do, and we should definitely bring them by. We loaded them in the car, drive almost 45 minutes, and brought them in. We weren't even in there 2 minutes before the guy said that they don't have the equipment necessary to test them, so they can't buy them. That's ridiculous. You can't tell the customer one thing over the phone, and then something different in person. Bad, bad, bad business practices. I mean, the guy definitely looked lazy, and not very personable, but as a customer, that's not really my problem. As usual, I left this place HIGHLY disappointed, and took my business to Everybody's. I didn't the same thing last year when I sold off some old vinyls I had. Shake It bought maybe 15-20 of them, and told me nobody would be interested in the rest and rolled their eyes at me, after which I went to everybodys, who bought almost all of the 100+ I had left, AND thanked me for coming in. My family has been dealing with Everybody's for over 20 years, and I was clearly wrong for giving anybody else a chance. I will never step foot in this place again. I don't appreciate employees acting better than the customers (whose potential sales are the reason for their paycheck), and wasting valuable time by making false promises. read more
