I say all that to say, every terrible piece of childhood lore I have has taken place at Children's Academy. The teachers at the time showed very little regard for the wellbeing of the kids. As a matter of fact (this is just one instance) a kid tried to drown me on a field trip and the teachers unanimously decided I was lying. A kid showed me his nether region--they told me I was lying. I told them they didn't give me any orange slices during snack time when everybody else had them--they said I was lying. If I ever see Ms. Kim or Ms. Tan there will be problems. I mean on the bright side, I took a picture with a pony...although that's when we found out I was allergic but whatever the pic was cute I guess.

The kids all seem to be engaged throughout the day with different activities. Each age group has their own outdoor area. They have themed weeks regularly, which is fun for everyone. The staff are all friendly and professional. Also, they don't follow the school schedules so they are open almost every day with the exception of federal holidays. I really like that there is flexibility in drop off times instead of a 30-minute or 1 hour window. I plan on keeping my little here until he ages out. Highly recommend!

My niece goes to this camp all summer and never gets bored. This was her second summer and she is always making sure that I have her signed up whenever there is a school break, as TSOF also does break camps during City of Decatur school breaks, teacher workdays, etc. Knowing that each day is a well thought out combination of learning and fun is what makes this camp really work. If learning is also fun-well, there you have it-the magic combination! All of the kids are excited to be there, the staff is great and very attentive. Each time I am there I am greeted kindly, as is my niece. They are actually HAPPY to see us walk in the door! This is a novel and brilliant idea and finally, I feel my money is well-earned by Kris and her staff...not just babysitting and coloring. amy niece comes home with little electronic bugs, her mind filled with fun things she cannot wait to share with me. I also saw the group at a science fair and a festival in Decatur! Way to get out in your community, team!

MSSA is owned and operated by Laurie Morgan. When I first stopped by to talk to her, she was very open to what we wanted to do and gave suggestions on what art projects she could do with the kids. I liked her "can do" upbeat attitude from the start. Laurie's birthday parties can go up to 15 children and we ended up with seven (including my son). She charges a mere $10 per child (you pay at least for an eight child minimum). You provide all the food and paper products. She leads the kids through the project/games/etc and does all the cleanup. Considering how much we paid for a party last year at a "bouncy house" place, this was an absolute steal. Our son's theme was Angry Birds. Laurie had the boys paint little birdhouses first, then make little puffball Angry Birds to go in them. I have to give her credit, she was incredibly patient with seven very energetic little boys. After the project/snacks/cake, she rounded them up for balloon games in the hall to work off the sugar high. They loved it, of course. Laurie will be holding summer art camps over the summer and I've already signed my son up for a week. He loved his Angry Birds party and can't wait to go back for camp. She also has art classes for adults and older kids throughout the week, and some Mommy and Me classes for the little ones.

It wasn't awkward at all ... being that I never played tennis. Coach Joe is AWESOME. He's funny, full of energy, and treats each one of us like we can be a tennis star even in our later years. I found the Summer Class for the little kids (5 years old) to be reasonable and luckily in my time schedule. Monday's at 4 and Saturday mornings. The coach is so good and he really encourages my daughter. She's 5 so I don't know if she'll be good or not ... but it's definitely great to get outdoors and introduce her and I to something new. They also have a lot of free and for profit events. Join the email group. If things remain the same I'll forever be a patron whether active or passive.

The max capacity for the class is 8 people, so you have to make your reservation early - this is easy enough to do on their website. They also offer round robin tournaments and other organized pickleball activities. My only gripe is that it's not easy to reserve a pickleball court if you just feel like playing on your own. Sometimes, when the weather is nice, we feel like going out for some impromptu pickleball and don't feel like competing. Still looking for places in DeKalb where we can easily reserve a court and do our own thing. I believe you can call to check availability and reserve, though.

The parking was great and the tour of the studio was really cool to see and learn about the process. Then we got a ton of hands on time with the pottery, about an hour and a half, and then we got to pick from a wide selection of glazes which the artists will apply and then in about 6 weeks we will be able to pick up the pottery. I was blown away by the price of the class. I received it as a gift, but when I learned that it was only $65 per person for a 2 hour class and 2 pieces of pottery I was shocked. We turned right off the bumpy road that led us there and noticed their sizable parking lot. We found a spot quickly, snapped a couple of pictures and entered. There was really no direction or guidance when we got inside so we were hovering around for a few minutes. Then I noticed a check in desk at the far end. There was a couple ahead of us so we waited for a few seconds and then approached the counter. We advised that we were scheduled for the 5 PM class. The staff checked us in, pointed us in the right direction, and also informed us that we could roam around and check out their gallery before our class started, since we were a little early. I would say initially there were a bunch of people milling around. I was not sure if they were staff members or other patrons, but we did not initially get a very welcoming feel. Not a lot of eye contact or warm smiles. We roamed around checking the gallery until our class started. We approached the training area as it got close to our scheduled start time. Our instructor. Zoe greeted us warmly and told us she would get things started soon. Before class, she conducted an official tour that led us around the whole property. She clearly explained how the whole process would flow. Then she did a full demo before we even started. She led us through the process, and we were able to create three different creations, but she let us know that we were only able to keep two. Zoe was a star; very informative, patient and knowledgeable about the whole process. She expertly stepped in and helped us whenever we had questions. We washed up, picked out final colors for our creations and checked out. She advised that it would take 6 to 8 weeks for the whole creation to be baked and ready for pick up. For some reason, I thought we would be able to take our creations with us that day. Overall, we really enjoyed our first time at Mudfire.
