I came into the store to purchase a cowboy boot figurine that I'd seen online, but when I got there, it was much smaller than I'd realized. The owner was so incredibly sweet; she apologized profusely for me having to drive "all the way out [there]," which wasn't at all a problem. I told her it was okay and not her fault that it wasn't what I'd had in mind, but she insisted on letting me leave with a parting gift for my troubles. She went behind the counter and pulled out a Hamsa pendant on a chain, and handed it to me, saying, "it's for good luck and safe travels." I was so moved! He told me at the shop that the price of the menorah I was buying was $70 (after tax) but then I saw in my bank account that he had charged my card $85...I really wanted to support a local business instead of getting a menorah from target. A quick google search for menorah shops led me to shalom gifts. Truly unfortunate that they run the shop so carelessly given that it's one of the only shops of its kind. I went in after to confront him and when I told him that he cheated me he acted like it wasn't a big deal "oh, it's just fifteen dollars!" Absolute ripoff. Avoid at all costs. Prices are more than double what they are in other stores in the area, and the quality is inferior. The salesman is extremely rude and pushy and gives off a bad vibe in general. I felt very uncomfortable when I was alone with him in his shop. Having been to many Judaica shops in the Los Angeles area, this one is by far the worst. Religious customers should also be aware that he may lie about not being open on Shabbat (something he told a friend of mine... - a lie I find to be particularly offensive when spoken by a man who sells religious materials to a mostly religious audience). Friends of mine have also been into the store and have fallen victim to his fake praying scam, at the end of which he tries to guilt people into paying money for players he performs (which are implicitly assumed to be free of charge and out of the goodness of his heart). read more

Wanted to buy a hookah, and I didn't really do my research so I ended up here. The proprietor doesn't speak english well and is pretty unknowledgable about the hookahs. The hookahs are poor quality and overpriced. Plus the charcoal he has is so old that it doesn't light. When I had an issue with the hose on my hookah he didn't do too much to help me, and eventually just back to watching TV while I figured it out on my own. The store might have other redeeming qualities but DO NOT buy a hookah from here. read more

Okay, if you don't believe this, it's okay. Really, it's okay. I'm not convinced either, but I walked by the store and this picture of Madonna caught my eye. The owner was outside loading or unloading his car, so he said come in. He talked about how he helped Madonna with her fears. He could do prayers for me, but I said no. He showed me a keychain. It was overpriced, but for some reason I bought it anyway. I don't know why, but I did. He said he'd do a prayer for me and he did. He said the prayer will help with prosperity and prevent accidents. To make a long story short, about 45 minutes later, I almost got hit by a bus turning North onto Van Nuys. I was lucky enough to see it coming. I had the walk signal. Did this have anything to do with his prayer? I'll never know, but I thought I'd mention it. I'm not disputing what anyone else has said here, this is just my experience. read more

A very educational place for seeing crooks in action. The place is filled with signs that say fixed price and no refunds. Only half of that statement is true. The Jewish man at first seemed to be nice when helping me pick out a necklace for my Jewish girlfriend. He explained how hes not in this for the money and he had a nice story. I picked a necklace and I bargained for it to pay $70. Granted I know very little about jewelry, I showed it to my mom and sister and they were mad because they said I was ripped off badly. I took my sister and cousin back to the store for a refund. He would give us attitude and even had the nerve to ask my cousin if she spoke English when he wanted her to stop asking for a refund (he has terrible English...). He said he would exchange for another but they didn't like any others as they said they all looked tacky and used. We ended up replacing the chain for an unbent one (which was almost impossible) and for an unscratched pendant. At the end they wanted a second pendant to try to make up for the price but he said they were worth $100 but he would sell them for $50. I got angry at him and told him I'm not giving him another cent. I explained to him how he was a disgusting crook that took advantage of the situation and that wont give refunds because he knows he's ripping people off. He said he'd give it to me for $10 and I looked at him with disgust and said I'm not giving him more money. He gave it to me for free and I walked out angry. Stay away! I went here to buy an anniversary gift for my husband. The owner started praying for me and tied a red string around my wrist, which was interesting until he wanted me to pay $50 for it. "Don't worry, I take credit cards," he said. He had already wrapped the gift, which had the price displayed so I gave him the $50 to get out of there when he asked if he could rub some olive oil that rabbis had prayed over on me. The shop owner is the biggest crook on the boulevard!!! I bought a mezuzah from him years ago without incident. Then returned for a Seder plate, kiddish cup and Shabbat candle holders for Pesach this year. He told me that the Seder plate was an original from Israel. After much schmoozing with me and even praying on me, I decided to buy the items without further inspection even though I knew the price was high. I showed the plate to a friend of mine who has genuine Yair Emmanuel products and she told me to look for a signature because all original art from Israel would be signed. I didn't find a signature, but what I did find was where the shop owner clearly peeled off the "Made in China" sticker. I was absolutely disgusted-- for the price I paid I could have had an actual Israeli artist's work. I took the items back to the shop owner who refused to give me a refund. I had to dispute the charge with my credit card company and await a refund. Don't be hustled by this man! NEVER shop here! read more

I went to this store and requested Chanukah candles that do not drip. The owner told me that he had very good candles. Some of the candles, which were indicated to burn for one hour, burned down after 15 minutes, while the others stood tall. All have made such a mess that we had to use other candles. The guy with the indiscernible, thick accent never misses a chance to rudely ditch a conversation with me, which basically only consists of my trying to question him about curse breaking, in connection with the Kabbalah, the latter, a topic that he commercially connects with Madonna. Madonna, ironically, has zero clue about the Judaism that the Kabbalah is based in. Probably, he's dismissive in order to conceal the fact that he cannot adequately comprehend English, but poor language skills and lack of civility always dissociate me from any business. The last of the two times, he said to call back later, and he was closing in 10 minutes. Many like this business, so perhaps this is another aspect of a curse that I seem to be flying under the flag of the double standard of. From the outside, I see a huge variety of items, that is comprised of a multitude of different stock, within each category, but the merchandise is just plain weird; oversized, gaudy Chumsas and Stars of David ain't exactly my cup of tea. I mean, how the Hell can you put those to any practical, personal use? You cannot wear them, and use in your home will guarantee nobody ever visits you there, again, although perhaps that is what you desire! Shalom also denies that he is open during the Sabbath, and maybe that is true, but the hours listed for his store are indeed inclusive of Saturday. Too much shakiness with this place. A BIG NO. If you want Jewish gifts, go to the shops on Fairfax, South of Melrose Avenue, and North of Beverly Boulevard, in Los Angeles, including that of the National Council of Jewish Women. We had very bad experience with this merchant. I purchased a mezuzah from Shalom Gifts. We asked for kosher mezuzah handwritten on the piece of parchement. Merchant slipped in the box a non-kosher mezuzah printed on paper. It was deeply insulting and troubling for my family. I came back and ask for refund merchant refused. I am sure that such behavior will be deeply insulting for any religion. read more
