In observance of Jewish customs, the dead are buried the next day. Not a whole lot of time to prepare. A flurry of activity ensued, as I was sent on an errand to purchase some kippahs aka yarmulkes, which are the traditional head coverings worn by the men. This being my first Jewish funeral, I was perplexed. A song popped in my mind "Help me Rhonda". This was the case of "Help me Yelp!" I phoned this store and a friendly woman promptly answered, "we have those here." Relief was in sight. I was anxious about the parking, however a free parking spot in back of the store happened to be open the afternoon I stopped by. A blessing from God? A very nice salesman greeted me and patiently answered all my questions and more. He became my unofficial Jewish burial coach. He explained there would be a lot of dirt, to expect a mound of it at the gravesite. The deceased are buried in a pine box typically lowered into the grave, then the dirt is shoveled on top by the family members. Why a plain pine box? Because that decomposes most rapidly and their spirit or soul ascends to heaven that much faster. It is disrespectful to leave their body here on earth for longer than necessary. That cleared up my confusion on the promptness of this process. He informed me that the men wear black and make a cut in their shirts, which signifies that somebody was cut out of their life, very interesting. It is not done to the women's clothes. He directed me to the needed kippahs. There was quite an assortment. There were black suede ones which came in small/medium or large. They also had less expensive ones that were shiny and could be purchased in quantity. There were the more elaborate, fancier ones too. In the end I chose the simple black suede ones. The needed products were available at a reasonable cost, less than $5 each. Plus I was reassured as to what to expect at Jewish funerals, they definitely deserve 5 stars. read more

Here's the thing about 613. I CAN find just about anything there, and sure, they'll order it, too. BUT I've found that it's as expensive - if not more so - than anywhere else, and well, I'll say it: They're just not very female-friendly. I understand that they *want* to cater to a more Orthodox clientele, but they'll have to be more open-minded, if they're going to be able to continue to compete with online stores and local places that will treat female shoppers, whether we be civilians, wives, or clergy, with more respect. As a result, they're my last line of attack, only when I have no where else to go. I've also "tested" this observation, taking along male friends, going with (or before) me - and even they have mentioned the rudeness or dismissiveness with which I am treated in relation to them. What's the statistic... only 1 of 26 unhappy customers complain. The other 25 never return, and/or talk badly about a place. GOOD: 613 DOES HAVE or CAN FIND just about everything. Really lovely people. But only for the most observant Jew, likely Conservative not Reformed. My life partner, I am Christian and quite well-informed b/c of where I grew up. He is Reformed as is his whole family. I pulled him in here b/c while he has like the college student's most basic make-do Menorah, I am looking for something beautiful to honor Ya'wah. We were almost immediately approached in the most lovely friendly no-pressure way about what we were looking at and looking for. More in The Window and the display case. While all nice, nothing awesome. I really want to purchase this from a live store like from this Little Israel LA area, but am being forced by "just nice" to shop further at Amazon. We might return to purchase some books to support them. But alas, alack, I write and lead public seminars frequently on Dating relationships. The only books were for How to Prevent Interfaith Marriage, not at least 1 on How to Make That Work, so I knew as a Goyim, I was seriously unwelcome even though I am the one to keep the flame alive. I grew up in the tri-state area where so much of Judiasm is part of the air we breath, and my late mother worked for two major NE Yeshivas. Really? Still, a lovely store. And if you are Hasidim or Conservative, this might serve you well. Clearly, we are welcome to take your money for our goods, but your relationship isn't welcome here. I credit them with having a decent selection of Ketubas on hand if I needed one right then & there. I was getting married in about a week & needed a Jewish marriage certificate. Now, never having been married before, I wasn't quite accustomed to the apparent process it took to get a marriage certificate. Apparently, according to the guy who ran the place they don't usually hang out in a place waiting for people to fall in love. As I was looking for a proper Ketuba, I tried to find one that wasn't too "overly Jewish". I say this because I am marrying a person & not a religion. I don't need silhouettes of dancing rabbis to remind me of the commitment I'm making. When I asked to see the Ketubas with egalitarian wording, the guy changed his attitude towards me & became 50% more unwilling to help. He kept referring to it as "Egg-latarian" & seemed to give me the "you're less of a Jew because you think your own thinking is more important than those of the millions & billions of Jews that came before you" look. [The same ones I would get from my Jewish school when I was younger]. I did end up getting one from them which was delivered in two days to them. When I picked it up, it was still in the mailing tube complete with the receipt of the place they are the middlemen to. There was a 100% mark up!! Yikes! I could have paid $60 if I bought it direct instead of $120! Anyway, I hope to never need another Ketuba [who needs to get married more than once? Oy! What a headache!] to ever come back here. I have had nothing but great experiences with this store. My husband and I had a week and a half to plan our wedding, and we went to this store for a Ketubah. We found the most beautiful Ketubah we had both ever seen. They were able to prepare, create, and ship the Ketubah to us in a very short time frame, all the way to Northern California (Sacramento) the day before our wedding. We just visited the store yesterday to look for our first Seder plate, and we again found a top notch and beautifully crafted Jerusalem Stone Seder plate. I looked online and saw the same plate for a much higher price, which shows that this store is not only welcoming, but they have reasonable prices. They have a wide selection of Judaic gifts and stuff for your holiday needs. This store has helped my husband and I to start our marriage off with some memoriable Judaic pieces which we will have and use for the rest of our lives together, G-D willing. read more

They have a wide array of product and books and I don't think you will find quite the selection at another store like this in Los Angeles. What a great little store. for someone who is new to the Torah this place has it all. Deciding what to get on a small budget is not easy. the store is laid out very nice. Easy to find what your looking for. if you don't find it, the staff is more than ready to assist you. Good selection of items you might need to get your Chanukah or traditional wedding on. When they're busy, it's not that easy to find help but they're happy to help when you ask. There are some items you'll have to ask for as you won't be able to find them yourself. Street parking is available and prices are generally comparable to what you might find online. read more

I visited the Mitzvah Store to get a gift for a friend's little girl. I am not Jewish, but was attending a naming ceremony and live close to the Pico-Robertson area. I pass this store all the time and figured they would help me choose a good gift. I was a little worried about being an intruder, but was made to feel so welcome, that feeling faded immediately. The young man who helped me was friendly, kind and very helpful. He even asked if I'd like to get on the mailing list. Brought my friend here as we came in from far away to get Passover shopping supplies at a local market, we then hit the Yelp app and found this place to get a seder plate as well as supplies for children that would be attending. From the moment we parked in the small area behind the store we were welcomed by the workers. Note, I have purple hair streaks and don't exactly expect warmth from more observant people but these people all went out of their way to be helpful and we had solid conversations as well during our shopping. There is a genuine warmth not just a superficial marketing found here. The shop carries fine artists ceremonial items as well as a great selection of books. Great Judaica store in the Pico Robertson area. They have an excellent selection of Seforim, kids books, religious toys, religious Jewish music, holiday items and other Judaica. The owner is a sofer (scribe) so he can repair tefillin etc... In response to one of the other reviews on here: All though all Jews are welcome in the store this is a religious store so dress and act accordingly. I went to the Mitzvah Store to purchase a meaningful, high-quality gift for our nephew's Bar Mitzvah. After selecting a book stand with a sterling silver inlay and design, we asked them to have it engraved with his name. I paid for the book stand and engraving and shipping on December 8th and Elizabeth promised that it will be engraved and delivered within a week. It's been over a month and they won't even return my repeated calls with messages. On One call, they acknowledged that they have my order, promised to heck on it and call is back. That was a week ago, and no response. They have my money and they did not deliver. read more
