I feel like branching out a bit from my usual food posts so I'm deeming this as my "Not So…read moreDeadmonton" series. Welcome to Part 1. Because Edmonton doesn't suck that much, right? RIGHT? People are always complaining about Deadmonton, which is completely justifiable, but hey, sometimes you have to make the best of situations (insert standardized, generic, cheesy line here). Well, this is one of my favourite places to hang out in the summer. You like to play sports? Specifically tennis? You want to play tennis on CLAY? This is the only place in town that has them. 7 clay courts - completely different playing surface than hard courts. There's a sign-up board. Hang your membership card up on the court you're playing on. Bonus that the people that play here are good peeps - if you want to make friends, I suggest going to: - Friday Night Socials (6:00pm - 9:00pm) - Signing up for a tournament: Davis Cup is a loooooooot of fun. One day tourny! - Joining summer league (men's, women's and co-ed teams): Interclub is great. The season is short (end of May - August) and you play once a week. Check out Tennis Edmonton Interclub for more dets. Membership is required here. Here's the 2016 rates. Note: Prices are cheaper if you get the early bird memberships. - Full-time adult: $275.00 - Daytime/weekday adult: $150.00 - Punch pass: $50.00 for 5 visits. This is actually a pretty decent deal if you have commitment issues. Also, if you're a cheap bastard, you can wait till July 15 for their mid-season discounted rates. - Full-time adult: $180.00 - Daytime/weekday adult: $100.00 Are you a noob? Or want to improve your skills? Here's more options. So many options. - Ball machine: There's a ball machine! It's awesome. I've used it once. - Box league: you play x amount of games each month against people your skill level. Sign up required. Not gonna lie, I joined and bailed hard. - Hit list: Sign up onto the hit list with your tennis rating (1.0 - Open level). Contact people to play. Easy peasy. - Monday night clinic (6:00pm - 8:00pm): free drop-in clinic for members. Can't say I've ever been but I'm sure it's great. - Lessons: private ($40.00/hour), semi-private ($50.00/hour) or group lessons (6 sessions - $135.00 for non-members/$120.00 for members). Whatever tickles your fancy. Can't say I've ever done these either but I should... There's also 3 beach courts to play on. Beach is SO much fun. I'm just sad I only played a handful of times this summer. :( Same deal as tennis but here's a few options: - Summer league: Runs May to August and you play once a week. I've never played in the league but really, really want to (it's insanely popular). It's beach 2's so you better be good. Monday (Women's 2's), Tuesday (Men's 2's) and Thursday (Coed reverse 2's) nights. $250.00 fee to play. - Sunday drop-in (6:00pm - 9:00pm): $5.00 gets you in. Good times. - Friday drop-in drills (5:00pm - 7:00pm): $10.00 to participate. Can't say I've ever done it but this will work on your beach skills. So that was informative right? Nothing like hitting a tennis ball/volleyball to make you wish you were as good as the pros.

Horrible parking on weekends…read more Don't go there on a weekend! There is insufficient parking there. I spent a half hour looking for one spot with at least forty other drivers. This has happened several times In the last year. I'm not going to book my children at the Saville Community Sports Centre for weekend programs anymore. What good is the place if you can't park there? Very frustrating.

My first few visits were to attend a Bootcamp exercise class. I absolutely loved it! The teacher was incredibly supportive and encouraging. She got me to push my limits in ways other classes haven't. The class usually only had 3-4 of us so it almost felt like semi-private coaching. I ended up taking another Bootcamp class with a different teacher the next season and again, the teacher was great though this time the class was more full (not a bad thing). Unfortunately the next season, Bootcamp no longer fit my schedule so I decided to start using their fitness facilities by myself. The gym is fairly small but usually not too busy. I've never had to wait for my prefered cardio machines or for weights. It is clean and tidy and there is always a staff member available if you have any questions. While there are fancier gyms in Edmonton, the Saville Centre has everything you need for a basic workout and lots of opportunities for group fitness classes. Plus the membership fees are very reasonable, particularly if you are a U of A student or alumni.

So my kid took ninja classes here for about 3 years. And the first two or so years were lovely. But…read morein the past 6 months the quality of the classes has decreased for my kid. Not only that but the staff communication has become contradictory and frustrating. Some of the coaches are better than others, sure, but my kid did get at least one bleeding nose that wasn't spotted by the coaches that day. Repeated nagging on billing issues that were already resolved, email advertising for a PD Day camp on a day that wasn't a PD day but rather the national day of Truth and Reconciliation, disorganized classes, and the no longer availability of lockable lockers for belongings all contributed to a worsening experience. There is now a lot of competition in the kids ninja gym space so we will go elsewhere. Sadly this was one of the only facilities that catered toward the really young kids when we started here, and it really was excellent at first with good transit accessibility, awesome coaching staff, and more. Now, the formerly 1 hour classes are only 50 minutes, some days there isn't even an obstacle course, and the seating in the viewing area is less comfortable. Following this business's NIMBY anti-safe consumption space advocacy, I find it hard to encourage anyone to go here. I definitely find that a lot more parents are unsatisfied with the kids classes. Plus it is quite cold in here.

The trainer I had for the class, Stacey, kicked our sorry butts to the corner of the street and back! Her great energy and enthusiasm spurred us on, considering she was carrying a little human in her belly! I tip my hat off to you Stacey! In a nutshell, Great place, great peeps, and a burning desire to play on the other side!

The atmosphere was beautiful, bright, and clean! Glow Juicery is just inside to the left for a pre or post workout treat! I love that everything is made right in front of you and totally customizable! I love ANYTHING with ginger and kale - Yummy! Erin was the instructor for my class - super friendly and knowledgeable. She gave alternatives for lower impact options when it came to the cardio section. I was really surprised at the intensity of the class given the small movement/range of motion. I am confident the class could kick the fittest butt around as well as being modifiable for someone just starting to work out. Class was broken up into warm up, upper body with weights, lower body with a squishy ball, cardio, and ab work on eco friendly mats. They provide everything you need, including lockers with a key! They sell special footy socks that help you grip the floor if you like. I noticed on the wall that they were in the midst of a 30 day challenge, too! There were three large washrooms and beautiful vanity sink area complete with personal hygiene items if you needed to freshen up. If you are looking for a women only fitness class, definitely give Barre Body Studio a try!

What a hoot! I had a smile on my face from the moment we walked in til we left. There's nothing like being time warped into the 1970s and watching old cartoons and advertisements on the TVs while eating your dinner or having a drink. Everything from the color scheme to the light fixtures to the trinkets collected behind the bar screams 1970s, and made for a fun, goofy, comforting nostalgia. We started with drinks at the bar while we waited for a table. They have a good selection of local brews as well as cocktails. Even the names of the drinks made me smile. I got the "dirty shiddy martini." Then we moved to our table in the "rumpus room." The menu is no-frills and straightforward. Not a ton of options, but you're there for a burger! They have vegetarian, vegan, and gluten free options to make everyone happy. We each got a burger Alabama style, split some fries with "flat sauce," and added a giant pickle on a stick for shids and giggles. Delicious, it all hit the spot! Staff is friendly and quick. It will be busy when you go so just enjoy the experience!
