During out trip to Edmonton last May, it was getting pretty late but we were craving some good vegan food and drinks.....thankfully The Buckingham (@thebuckonwhyte ) on the eclectic Whyte Avenue .. was open for the save! Their food is 100% vegan, what you might expect to find in a diner or bar, decadent and hearty hearty hearty! If you want healthy, they do have three salad options to choose from. We went with the Buffalo Mac'n'Cheese, Poutine, Chkn Wings and ....oh my ... Deep Fried Oreos. We don't really have vegan Poutine options here in Seattle (if you know of any, please do drop a note in the comments section letting me know where) so it's always a treat going to Canada and comparing the various Poutine options as pretty much every vegan place has their own take. If you haven't been to visit yet, you owe it to yourself to try them out. If you find yourself visiting Edmonton, make a point to visit Whyte Avenue and walk up and down the strip checking out all of the store and most definitely, including The Buckingham in your visit. read more

We came for a live music event for Rock'n'for dollars. The theme was Shrek and there were about 8 different bands that performed. Each one doing a Shrek cover and then 2 original songs. Door cover was $4. I think it was a really neat reason to hit this place and Whyte Ave. Even though it was a Monday night this place was packed! And parking around was cheap and easy (because it was free after 9pm)! The All-Vegan All-the-time menu was a bit of a surprise but really cool. This was my first time visiting the Buckingham for Wing Wednesday (8$ for 4 seitan wings, and $4.50 highballs), and I was instantly taken in by the gritty charm of the place. They have a lovely back patio that overlooks Whyte ave, and the inside is reminiscent of a small town dive bar. In place of cushioned seating for their booths, they have church pews, which contrasts funnily with the rugged, dark feel of the venue. I had their maple sriracha wings to start, which were delicious and juicy. Their cashew ranch was fantastic, and the wooden sticks inside of them to replicate the feel of chicken bones was a nice touch. For mains, my partner and I shared the Chick'n "Stabwich", and the flavor was pretty phenomenal. We got the stadium nachos to finish off, and that was by far the best value for money. 6$ and you get a whole trays worth of chips, salsa and queso. I wish the queso would've been a bit creamier but it was lovely nonetheless. Our server was attentive and pleasant! Overall, I would say it's a bit more on the expensive end, but considering the food is all vegan, it's understandable. Imagine a cool punk-style pub that has just the right amount of grime on it... But the food that they serve is entirely vegan. It sounds like a bit of a bizarre thing to imagine for some reason! (Contradictory, even.) Welp. Such a place exists and it's right here in Edmonton. Crazier still is that The Buckingham has been voted #1 Best Chicken Wings 2018, #1 Best French Fries 2018 and #1 Best Pub 2018 by VUE Weekly. Yes, chicken wings. Let me remind you again that this place serves only vegan food. I had to check it out for myself. Open since 2013, "The Buck" has been around for quite a while at this point. I remember that prior to their opening the location turned over several times, all failed attempts at various pub/bar businesses. Enter The Buckingham and something has stuck. It turns out that all the Old Strathcona scene wanted was an eclectic, alternative nightspot that hosts live music and serves all-vegan pub food. You might remember the vegan food truck called Sailin' On - well the truck is no longer but they are the people behind the food at The Buckingham. So you're on Whyte Ave and you roll up to The Buck and head up the stairs to the to their second level location perched over the avenue. The space is large and pretty dark, with just a hint of hole-in-the-wall to it. There's a lot of deep-coloured wood, a long bar, plenty of booths and tables, and a seat-yourself policy. You'll spot all sorts of crazy knickknacks around the room, including some awesome arcade and pinball machines toward the back. Unpretentious, it feels like a pub in every sense of the word and is very welcoming. This is a place where you gather with friends to have a few drinks and a good time. I grabbed a booth, situated myself, and began to look over the extensive beer menu. Microbrews galore, they feature a lot of local names, which is nice to see. I went for a tall can of Collective Arts Blood Orange & Cranberry Cider ($9.00), a brewery in Hamilton. First of all, this was the most beautiful can that I have ever seen! I loved the design and think it's so cool that this company features different artists on their cans. Very awesome. The cider was really nice as well! A great combination of tart and sweet that really tasted like fragrant candied blood orange with a slight apple twist. Plus tart cranberries. Enjoyable and refreshing, this was a perfect summertime cider. I was certainly the most excited about the Buffalo Wings (Buffalo wings just the way you remember them. Comes with house-made ranch & fresh veggies - $16.00), especially since they are supposed to be some of the best wings in the city AND they were able to achieve that designation without even being real chicken. They must really be something special. The order comes with six wings and you get to choose from; hot, BBQ, Cajun, sweet chili heat, maple sriracha, salt 'n' pepper, or teriyaki. I asked if we could have half one flavour and half another and were told that we could! In that case, I got half hot and half maple sriracha. The wings themselves are super intriguing. It's faux chicken wrapped around a wooden stick and the stick totally provides the illusion of a bone. The "meat" is ultra juicy and tender, crispy on the outside, and truly does have the same texture as chicken. It's almost like having all of the best parts of eating a chicken wing without all of the worst parts. I loved the hot flavour because it's a total classic and matched perfectly with the tasty housemade ranch dip. Hot sauce and ranch is the whole quintessential buffalo experience right there! But I extra loved the maple sriracha flavour because it was spicy-sweet and the maple really came through. I really loved these. I didn't miss "real chicken" one bit. If you gave me these wings for the rest of my life I'd be happy. They also serve entire fried chicken baskets (*not chicken) and I would be incredibly interested to see how they pull that one off! Although the menu is full of burgers, sandwiches, and even corn dogs and donairs, I was pretty interested to try the Buffalo Chicken Mac N' Cheese (This ain't your mom's mac 'n cheese. Elbow macaroni, vegan cheese blend, buffalo chicken, onion 'n celery, topped off with green onion & panko bac'n crumble - $11.00) because I remain a huge sucker for anything buffalo. This take on mac & cheese was unique and I liked that it was almost a whole new version of the dish. It wasn't as gooey-cheesy as traditional mac & cheese but I honestly enjoyed the consistency in a different way. I liked really being able to experience the saucy macaroni pasta without it all turning into one big mushy, cheesy mass. More of the buffalo chicken was absolutely welcome since I loved it in wing form. And the panko "bacon" on top added great texture and crunch. The Buckingham is by far my favourite bar in Edmonton and one of the place I have missed the most over the past year. While I've continued to order takeout, nothing will compare to eating greasy vegan food while sipping on a Caesar and listening to pop-punk jams from the early 2000s. I cannot WAIT to go back as soon as it is safe. My favourite part of "The Buck" is their vegan pub-food menu. My favourite item is the crunch wrap but there's honestly nothing on there I wouldn't be happy to eat. The portions are super generous and I always seem to order too much, though with takeout I've been taking advantage of this and making sure I have enough for lunch the next day. The last time I "ate in" at the Buck was for Thanksgiving where I sat on the chilly patio enjoying a homestyle vegan feast, complete with all the traditional side dishes. While I probably won't be indoor dining anytime soon, you better believe I'll be sitting on that patio again as soon as the weather allows it. read more

I must have walked by this place on Whyte dozens of times, but never even noticed it. It's kind of a dive bar on the upper level (you have to go up a flight of stairs to get there) and it's nothing to look at from the outside - or even from the inside. But at the far back is a nice sunny patio area in the summer. From the look of the place you'd expect pretty standard burgers and wings fare, but this is where you'd be surprised - the entire menu is vegan! Apparently the owners of the bar were friends with the owners of a vegan food truck, and the latter ended up coming in to do all the cooking for the bar. So, if you want vegan chicken and waffles, vegan burrito bowl, vegan chicken wings, vegan poutine, or vegan caesars, give this place a try. I am not vegan, but came here with vegan friends to give it a try. I had the "chicken" and waffles and it was ok but not outstanding - for me, used to eating real chicken, the texture of the vegan "chicken" was sub-par and they used too much hot sauce to disguise the lack of chicken taste, which didn't go well with the waffle. Waffle was good though. My friends' meals seemed better; the "chicken" on the burrito bowl was much better textured and flavoured, so maybe I just chose poorly. Despite being vegan, don't expect this to be a healthy option though - most of the options were still about as unhealthy as non-vegan pub food would be, and a deep fried vegan "chicken" wing or bowl of poutine isn't any better for you than a non-vegan one! I always enjoy the sailin on food truck so when I found out that they have a full menu I had to check it out!! I was not disappointed at all! I am not a drinker so I can't comment on the beverages but I sure enjoyed the food. The nachos were so amazing! I love that they use freshly made tortilla chips it just makes it so much tastier. It was a huge portion for two people. We were full afterwards and couldn't order anything else. It came loaded with refried beans, veggies, vegan cheese and two sides. We needed up adding the queso cheese dip which was my favorite. It was so sweet and savory and really topped off the nachos! I have had their avocado tacos before which are delicious as well. My friend has been interested in vegetarian / vegan food options lately and heard good things about this vegan pub on Whyte...so we decided to try it for early dinner! Atmosphere: 3/5 This was located on the second floor with long tables. The area was quite spacious but also a bit dark, since it was getting gloomy outside when we arrived. When the sun did come out, it was unfortunately also quite blinding. Otherwise conveniently located on Whyte. Food: 4/5 We shared the Chicken 'n' waffles, spicy chicken tacos, and Mexi-fries. Everything was really tasty! I love the waffle and could hardly tell the difference for the fried 'chicken'. Seasoning for the mexi-fries was really good too since I love chili. The spicy chicken did get a little spicy for me but I enjoyed it - although I would've preferred less sauce / dressing on everything in general. Overall very tasty bar food. I only tried a sip of my friend's beer which was lighter than usual so it was ok. The Buckingham was the first bar I ever went to in my teenage years when it used to be the Thirsty Turtle. I haven't been back since and it doesn't look like any work has been done to the place in in over 15 years. It's a typical dive bar, so if you're comfortable in that atmosphere, you'll feel right at home. The menu is all vegan and curated by the guys that owned the retired Sailin' On food truck. We ordered 'chicken' wings, 'chicken' & waffles and a chickpea and sweet potato bowl. The food was pretty standard pub fare and unexceptional but I can appreciate they're catering to a vegan crowd. The quality of the faux meat they use is almost passable for real meat (and I've tried quite a few varieties). Service is mediocre and the servers seem more interested in chatting, texting and having their own dinner than checking on your table. This place is just ok. read more

It is advertised as "Eating your veggies have never been so delicious". This is a lie. Nothing in this sandwich worked. The pesto overpowered the cashew cheese and the few lukewarm sautéed veggies sat limp on the bun. If you are going to make a veggie sandwich, I expect it jammed with veggies not 3 pieces of onion and one sad zucchini strip. And the garlic fries were stone cold. They had the potential to be tasty but no fries taste good cold. Unfortunately, I had training for the Fringe Festival so I couldn't make a proper complaint. This is the first time in over a year that I have left food on my plate without taking it home...which says a lot. I eat out 3 times a week. Super disappointed. The energy and atmosphere was awesome, loved the music they played, our waitress was amazing, my vegan caesar was yummy, the tea selection was on point. Unfortunately the food wasn't great tonight. I've only been here a few times but the food was definitely better in the past. Maybe it was just us or the stuff we picked. Everyone's taste buds are different. Went here last night for dinner and ordered the chicken and waffles... My boyfriend ordered the Philly sandwich. Both dishes were delicious! Although it is all vegan the food is still delicious and the texture and taste of the food is yummy! You can't really tell that it isn't real meat. For appetizers were ordered the buffalo wings with sriracha sauce and it was soooooo good. I want to come back to order it again lol. Also Tuesday night's are trivia nights and we stuck around and did two rounds. Prize was a $100 GC to blackbyrd on whyte, pretty snazzy Prize! I like the place - it has a good vibe, and the fact that half the menu is vegan sets it apart from the other pubs in the area. I had the chicken and waffles. The "chicken" had a good texture and crispy coating, but I did not like the hot sauce poured all over the waffles. Hot sauce and waffles do not mix. I had to keep adding maple syrup to temper the heat and flavour, and it just got very messy and unappealing. In general, I don't like food that is heavily sauced, but this was really too much. I'm really glad that the Buckingham is around!! Let it be known that I'm no longer a 20-something and therefore am not the spry bar hopper of yester year, but with that said - Buckingham is a place I'm apt to suggest AND go to when I'm feelin zazzy! They have awesome theme nights like Simpsons trivia, sporting event nights, and did I mention bands play there?? I clearly did not. Well they do! Go see live bands there! I mean I'm an 87 year old living in a 32 year olds body, so I only go once and a while. But if you a youngie, get into it! Support your peeps! My favourite time to go to The Buckingham is later evening and dippin into the the early night (7:30ish). Eat a meal, have a couple of pints, then home time! The food is delicious! I believe it's taken care of by the Sailin' On crew, and they always got good stuff. It's vegan, but I don't even feel like I had to mention it because it's good and that's what matters. Riiiight? I like the Buck. I really do. But lately it seems like I've been having subpar experiences here. Maybe I'm not cool enough, but it can sometimes feel a little bit alienating and uncomfortable because the staff aren't particularly welcoming all the time. Really hit or miss for me. Don't get me wrong, the food here is great. I don't understand how everything is vegan because let me tell you it tastes like the real deal! Sailin' On have done a great job here- the kitchen and kitchen staff have their craft down to a science and an art for that matter. My favourite is the corndogs and fries. Super delish. It's dark in here and I feel it's better suited for a night out at the bar than a dinner, which to me is a real shame. The patio/balcony is quite small but it's nice when you can squeeze in there for lunch/a drink! They've got lots of space inside for when you're out on a Friday night and feel like dancing. The one thing that's really hit or miss is the staff. Maybe it's just really super cool to seem uninterested and bothered by everything but it doesn't feel super cool when you're a patron. I just hope that the next few times I come back I'm treated a bit more like a human being with human feelings. I try to assume the best in others but sometimes you just gotta put a smile on your face and fake it till you make it rather than sulk around and act bothered by everyone at the tables. I'll come back, and just cross my fingers that my experiences are better. Because this place is great, and deserves four or five stars. And they're totally capable of attaining that. read more

I have not been this bothered by a service experience in quite some time. A friend and I came into The Buckingham for a drink after a tough week and were enjoying ourselves at first. The bar tender we dealt with seemed like a pretty friendly guy and even though it was a busy Friday night on Whyte we had little issue with finding a table to sit down at. As soon as we sat down there that's where the irritation started. The waitresses here seemed to be serving everybody except us. My friend tried to catch their attention several times calling out as well as sticking his arm out and waving but they would either walk right past or change directions and go back the way they came. At one point one even came straight to us and grabbed an empty glass that had been left by whoever had occupied our table before us and then immediately left without smiling at us,asking how things were going,our even acknowledging our existence. As a result of this we were not able to get food as the bartender we went over to talk to had informed us the kitchen closed at eleven. We had sat down at 10:20 which meant we spent 40 minutes trying to get these girls attention. The tables in front of us and behind us received great service and the waitresses stopped several times there to replenish drinks and socialize. I heartily agree with Vicky S. that this place is pretentious and they will only offer service to whoever they deem worthy of it. I will never waste another dollar in this place and plan to go out of my way to make sure my friends,family,coworkers,and anybody else who will listen will not waste their time and money here either. read more

The walls display famous artwork that you will recognise however, they have been reworked to show rock n roll legends faces! I wanted to like The Buckingham because the front and back patio's are pretty nice, but after 2 visits I just can't get behind this place. On our first visit they were obviously understaffed, and our poor waitress was run off her feet. We waited almost an hour after ordering our food before finding out they were out of what we ordered. They were also out of the beer we ordered, and so after having a different drink we waited forever to get our bill and get out. On our second visit we got to try some food. We ordered the maple bacon chicken wings, which were quite good. They were super crispy, and dripping with sweet syrupy sauce. Really good. We also got some poutine, which was much less impressive. The fries were pretty standard, and we got them topped with bacon, cheese curds, and gravy (vegan). There weren't a lot of curds, and the gravy was ridiculously salty. I generally like things saltier than most, and I found it almost inedible. That's saying something. On top of that, the service was again extremely slow. It felt like we spent most of the evening looking over our shoulders for the waitress. Hands down, my favourite bar in Edmonton. I have been coming here for years and have seen it grow, change, and increase in popularity. Great outdoor patio at the back of the Buckingham with picnic tables and umbrellas for shade. At the front, the prime seats are the tables overlooking Whyte Ave which are perfect for people watching. Stop by for afternoon beers. $5 Yellowhead & PBR draft from 3-8pm everyday! They also have Rock Creek cider in tap which is one of my favourite ciders. For food, they have an all vegan menu. In the past their menu was comprised of vegetarian and meat dishes. Then it switched to all vegetarian and now it is all vegan. The Buckingham is now partly owned by Sailing On which is a popular vegan food truck in Edmonton. They are the masters behind the vegan menu. I have yet to try more on the menu to find my favourite dishes! Great space for large group gatherings. Also, I have always had wonderful luck getting into the Buckingham later on a Friday or Saturday night and finding a table. The vibe and music brings out an eclectic group of people which makes the space amazing. read more

The wall art is top notch I would put a old-stoned-man-muppet poster up in my home too. The staff - sweet sweet blonde server with the ol' philtrum (aka medusa) piercing is a delight. Maple sriracha wings are a must, yo. Hot is also good. Also, Teriyaki are crispy treats in the mouth. read more

One of a kind vegan bar as nightclub. The food is amazing, the beer is cold enough, and the servers are good, although not always sufficiently staffed. I'd highly recommend visiting for wing Wednesday for some of the best vegan wings in the world! read more
