I have been bringing my dogs to shamrock grooming for years. Picked up my dog and she had been brushed so hard hair was gone, skin very red and inflamed. So off to the vet. The ranch did pay that vet bill directly. January brought my standard poodle in for grooming, was told when I picked my girl up & saw she was limping, I was nonchalantly told she jumped off grooming table and hurt her paw that she'd be alright. Well she wasn't had to have surgery, extensive home therapy & swimming. All of which I must say shamrocks insurance was very good in handling claims. I had to put the money out & insurance would reimburse me. Surgery was $5,000. I feel groomer was negligent. read more

The people at Shamrock Ranch Kennels, Stables, and Grooming are the best. I was going into the hospital and desperately needed to board my old boy. 15 now and I've always loved their exceptional service. He's considered an aggressive dog but you could literally push him over now. They've never had a problem with him as far as I know. They were booked up and I almost started to cry when Linda at the front desk heard hospital and she said to hold on while she spoke to Mike the kennel manager. She came back on the line and said that Mike said to bring him in. They're not just there to make money because they genuinely care about their clients, both 2 and 4 legged ones. I whole heartedly recommend them 100%. All of the staff are phenomenal. read more

Maybe I'm missing something regarding Shamrock Ranch. It received such bad reviews but I have always had a good experience here. It's a little like sending your doggie to live on a farm for a week. The kennel your dog stays in are twice to three times larger than most kennels and they let you bring an unlimited number of blankets and toys for your dog which is pretty rare. Each dog has access to a heated indoor area and an outside area so there's plenty of variety. The dogs get long scenic walks in the hills of Pacifica and have plenty of opportunity to play with other dogs. One reviewer was dismayed that the dogs drink out of dirty metal buckets. I don't know about you but my dog doesn't know the difference between water out of toilet and Evian served in a crystal goblet. Dogs seem to be happy with either. I am docking a star because they are not very flexible. If I'm running 10 minutes late, they won't wait for me. They tell me to come back tomorrow morning (and pay an additional full day of boarding). They give me grief when I pay with a credit card. Otherwise, I think it's a pretty good place. read more

I took my doggie in for an expensive two weeks of training - in board training for two weeks. Maybe I expected too much, but I specifically told them that I wanted them to focus on potty training and him learning the command "Come." I also said I wanted him to learn heeling on my RIGHT side. I will not mention the trainer's name bec' I'm not like that, but C'MON......... Ok, so I get there ready to pick him up. BILL = $1000.00. He more or less had the command "heel" BUT ON THE LEFT SIDE. He sort of had "SIT." That was it. Never did they teach him "COME". The potty training, NOTHING. My dog learnt basically NOTHING and it cost me one thousand dollars. NO WAY. read more

Magic... believe me when I say, my dog Arthur- is a changed boy. Just like that *Poof* he is controlled and focused, and I am sane and happy! Lisa who trained him is unbelievable. Her demeanor and control with my love-bug warmed my heart. She has a firm, yet loving and caring hand. I honestly did NOT RECOGNIZE my dog when she brought him out to meet us after two weeks of training. We boarded him and had him trained simultaneously for 2 weeks, and it is the BEST money we have spent. To see him walk like a controlled dog right next to you.. RIGHT NEXT TO YOU... no pulling, sitting on command, lying down and staying on demand, no jumping, no pulling on the leash... heaven... or like I said before, magic. If you need your beloved one to become the dog you always dreamed about, head straight to Shamrock Ranch, and trust Lisa with your pup, you will not regret it. I read all the reviews and saw the Ranch first hand. You just have to remember they are animals- and they don't need 5 star accommodation's- we humans think they do. You have to let go and trust the experts. And if you don't take the time to train when you get home-- you just threw away your money. You HAVE to continue with the tools they provide you with- it literally is all or nothing. I have 2 labs, and I am a freak about there well-being. Update: A day or so after my last review, the owner or manager at Shamrock sent me a note saying that she was sorry for my experience and planned to use it as an instructional tool at the next staff meeting. She also mentioned that they had just implemented doggy "report cards" that would inform owners about their pet's visit. She said I should have gotten one on check out, but since I didn't she shared the results with me (according to her, Bo's bowel movements were normal). I was very appreciative of this follow up. Not less than two weeks later, we had to go out of town suddenly for a family emergency. I didn't have time to research other kennels or pet sitters, and I thought that at least Bo was now familiar with Shamrock and may not be as shell-shocked this time. Let me just say, this visit was 100% different. I mean, he was still a little wild-eyed when we picked him up, but what can you expect? He'd been without us for a week! This time the staff were all SUPER friendly and commented on Bo's behavior and personality. I also received the "report card" on check out. All in all, I really feel like they took my initial feedback to heart. I would feel comfortable bringing Bo back here again. Thanks Shamrock! read more

I have kept my horses at Shamrock Ranch for over 5 years now, and I love it. The stables area is very private and secure - people are not allowed to wander through the area. The boarders are generally a very friendly group, and we all enjoy riding together in the peaceful valley setting. The horse facilities are great for me - where else can you get a big pasture for turnout just 20 mins from San Francisco? There's also a nice big ring with new footing, a high-sided round pen, you can trail ride on Montara Mountain and even on the beach, and recent renovations like a new washrack with hot water and lights really make it a nice place to be. Management is always open to listening to boarder issues, and maintains a calm and sensible head in emergencies. Sure, there are fancier places to board, but my horses are happy and relaxed, and I enjoy going to the barn to see my friends there. That's worth a lot to me! read more

I boarded my horses here when I was younger and there was a great family atmosphere that I never felt at another stable. Some of my best memories were made here; from horse shows to having parties to raise awareness about "Think Tunnel" (1994), remember that? I took my first obedience class with my first dog in 1990 from Lisa Rhodes and my dog Pepper just graduated one of her intermediate classes a few months back in 2012! Still the best classes I have found :) Now-a-days it's hard to go anywhere and see a familiar face, and with everyone wanting to start a pet business, I trust the people that I know know animals. read more

Customer service went way downhill. I was taking my dog here for years to be groomed. It was great. Then issues started happening with groomers and front desk. Now They don't return calls for grooming. And if they do they tell you that the groomer will have to call you back to make an appointment so you wait another few days. Wow! Lisa Rhodes is the true "dog whisperer". She completely understands the mind of dogs and the minds of their owners. I am blessed to have benefited from Lisa's talents, insight, and expertise. I have a strong willed but insecure mixed breed dog. I love him but he was impossible for me to train. After his "school" with Lisa he is at ease and very obedient. I can't express in this review my admiration for Lisa. In my lifetime I have rarely, if ever, met anyone, in any field, that I consider at the very top of their profession. Yet, Lisa Rhodes is truly as good as it gets in her field. She is remarkable dog trainer. Thanks to her we now are a very happy family with a great dog! The best part? A friend of mine had told me about this business and informed me that the owner was not very friendly but had heard positive things about the services provided here. We never got to the point of trying their services due to a bad experience with an employee. Therefore, this is a review specifically regarding their customer service. My husband stopped by with our toddler to check out the facility and ask a question since he was nearby. The woman working there was extremely crass, rude, and unhelpful. He was taken aback by her attitude and decided against making any further inquiries. I would not bring my pet here based on the way the staff interacts with others. If they treat human customers poorly, I cringe to think how they treat pets. read more

Getting my dog back from two weeks of training at Shamrock Ranch has been like night and day. I have a 1 y/o "excitable, smart, and stubborn" German Shorthaired Pointer who'd been to several 1:1 training sessions with a different trainer but still had behavior issues. My complaints were that he cried all the time- in the car on the way to the park, in the morning when he wanted us to wake up, if he was bored, etc. He pulled on the leash, he counter-grazed, he jumped on people. If I could give a higher rating I would. Our dog is very good natured but he was an out of control herding breed puppy. Smart as heck but stubborn. It wasn't for a lack of trying as I spent a lot of time training him but he still only listened when he wanted and kept jumping/playfully nipping my daughters. He also was a professional destroyer of all things. Chewing shingles off my house, eating the bannister, etc.. For the sake of sanity and my marriage I sadly turned my dog over to Lisa for two weeks. Unfortunately they would only take my dog and not my wife too(if you were thinking for your spouse). I missed him terribly and was nervous whether he would be a better six month old pup. Turns out he is now a totally different dog. Sits/lays down when told to and more importantly stays like that until the release command is given. Jumping is down by ninety-five percent. His overall behavior is incredible. Also, he's able to be in the house with us instead of his kennel because he listens and behaves so well. It's been a few days that he's home and we're just constantly drilling down the techniques Lisa taught us. There's still work ahead but he's a pup so the constant testing and super energy situations are all normal and will fade. I stopped by today to see if it was still open. Over 50 years ago when I was a kid I would take my bike and ride up Peralta road through the artichoke fields and the dairy farm to this little farm store that sold ice cream and treats. There are houses now instead of artichokes but down the road past them the old store building still stands. Speaking from the horse boarding side only: This is a nice boarding stable when you compare it to the facilities that are around. Currently they have the tunnel construction going through the ranch which I why I moved my horse away from this stable to Morning Star in Moss Beach. If they didn't have the construction I'd probably still be there because it's so close, but unfortunately, trail access is very limited now. They offer different pastures to board, including a senior citizens pasture, and all stall horses are turned out into fields with compatible horses during the day. read more

We love Shamrock! We have boarded Zola,our four year old Golden Retriever, here for over three years and Shamrock Ranch is without question the best boarding facility and grooming service we have ever used. The boarding kennels are huge and allow Zola to go outside for fresh air anytime she wants! Also, the groomers are amazing and Zola always looks great after she has a Shamrock spa day. Zola is a high energy girl and the half and full day play groups are awesome! We recommend Shamrock to all our friends for boarding, grooming and obedience training. By the way, Lisa Rhodes, the resident trainer is amazing. Zola spent two weekends with Lisa, and I am not sure we got the same dog back that we left with her. I brought our two pit-mixes to Lisa after the younger (6) started attacking the older (10)) during bath time and some playtime. If you have ever seen dogs fight you know it's not pleasant. We were genuinely scared that we would have to re-home the younger and after years of happy times - this was a horrible place to be. So as a last resort - we took them to Shamrock. I can't say enough good things about the care, training and love our girls received while there. After completing their training, we received ours. It's like we have NEW dogs. They are still the same goofy girls, but now they obey, behave and are just a joy to be with. Our stress level is way down and the tactics and tools given to us my Lisa have made our family stronger. Let me say first that im not a client of this facility but im bery impressed with thejr sucess helping dogs with behavioral issues! Im a dog walker and walk this German Sheperd that behavioral issues on leash. My client told me they were sending here to Shamrock for a couple of weeks! When The dog returned home and I went back to walk her Boy what a HUGE difference!!!! She not longer pulls on the leash i also noticed that she is less aggravated seeing other dogs on her walk. We bought a beautiful young, but fully grown Husky / Pomeranian mix, that had two problems: (1) she scares easily and (2) she came to us w/o any training and a lot of terrible habits from her prior owners. Another odd and painful issue was her fear of my father who loves dogs. It made him sad, and left us without back up care. We picked her from a three week boarded training yesterday and she is a different dog! Calm, attentive and most importantly my dad was able to walk her, pet her and give her treats. We are so happy. I can't say enough good things about Shamrock, and I am seriously disappointed with the reviews that show up high on the list here. Shamrock Kennels is great! The stalls a clean, well ventilated, more than large enough for my 75 lb dog, and the stalls have what looks like a back patio. Yes, your dog can actually lay around inside, and then move to lay around outside. Not much different than most of my dog's life. The people are great and took great care of my dog. We will definitely bring her back. I brought my dog in for a 2-3 day stay. Their basic rate for boarding is extremely fair. They have playtime, walking and grooming (all a la carte so you can pick what works for you and your pet). The people were extremely friendly when I dropped off my dog, but what shocked me was when the sent me to the back building where the kennel is to drop her off. I actually got to say good bye to my dog AND see where they were keeping her. I have never had a kennel do this; they always take my dog at the lobby and she disappears until I come back. Shamrock's kennel was very clean. The stalls look like small horse stalls. Much bigger than most of the places I have kept her. There was a bed for her to sleep on and a big metal bucket of clean cool water for her. Lots of room for my 75 lb dog. The oddity was a doggy door at the back of the stall. I asked the attendant what it was, and he showed me. It was essentially a back deck for my dog. Each stall appeared to have one. So the dog can be inside and a good sized stall or be outside in an area about the same size. I was really impressed. Here's the one warning - you are not driving into some lofty, high-end dog hotel. This is a ranch with horses and lots of other stuff going on. You're shoes will get dusty when you drop off your dog. Yes, the paint is faded, yes it's dusty; but the facility and the people are amazing. They just need a new webpage! read more

Do not take your dog here if you love them. It is dog jail. We dropped our boy off to go away for Thanksgiving weekend, and we were stunned when they told us he would have to be alone in a room except for two 15 minute walks a day, which were extra. He was terrified that we were leaving him. We had to catch a plane, but we were so upset that we almost didn't go. The owner could tell we were upset, but said nothing to make us feel any better. She had a "suck it up and get out of here" vibe -- like she was the warden and he had brought this horrible sentence on himself. My wife sobbed all the way to the airport. We raced back to get him when we got back, and he was so glad to see us that we knew he must have hated it. We told him, loudly, that we would never leave him with those horrible people again, and we meant it. Don't be fooled by the "ranch" in the title. Their quarters might as well be in a factory, an attic, or 300 feet under ground. We didn't know any better, but now you do. Take your dog anywhere else but here. I am leaving one star because yelp is making me. I would leave negative stars if I could. You would do better to let your dog wander the street for the weekend. read more

We just picked up our 10 month old pit bull puppy from shamrock ranch this afternoon. We dropped her off two weeks ago a stubborn, leash pulling, jumping up on people, dog aggressive bully. And today we picked up an almost perfectly trained beautifully smelling loving darling dog. She was a bit on the skinny side when we dropped her off and today she arrived having put on at least five to ten pounds making her look like a grown pit. She heels, sits, stays for twenty minutes at a time. She has only jumped a couple of times and responds immediately if we follow the instructions. It was a totally positive experience for our puppy and our dog. The only thing that was weird was the blankets we left with her did not return with her. But on the whole a great experience!!! read more

I cannot say enough great things about Lisa Rhodes, the dog trainer at Shamrock Ranch, or the kennel itself. After 3 weeks at Shamrock, our out-of-control yellow lab is now simply sublime. He was in great spirits when I picked him up and so proud to show off his newly honed skills. He's a compliant and cooperative dog now. I can barely believe it, but it's been 12 hours since we returned home and he hasn't reverted to his former, wild self. It's a dream come true. Horrible and over price! I had to take our dogs here because our normal place was full. It is more like a trip to doggie jail than a boarding facility. It was cold, had hard cement floors and was loud from the barking of all the unhappy dogs. I am unsure as to what happened but one of our dogs was jumping up and down like crazy when my husband picked him up. The woman who worked there was surprised because she said he was shy and sat in the corner the entire time. That just told us he was miserable because he is gregarious and affectionate with everyone. He has been boarded many times and my husband said he has never seen him behave that freaked out. They could not wait to get out of there and were extremely thirsty and exhausted. As soon as we got them home, they drank two bowls of water and went to right to sleep at 10:00 am. Not to mention they were there only a few days but smelled horrible and had fleas. I had groomed one of my dogs only 2 days before his stay. I'm sure that is why they try to get you to groom them the last day. That brings us to the price gouging. They charge you for every little thing including a 10 min walk, giving them a cong to play with, allowing them to play with other dogs outside of their cell. They also charge you for a full day even if you pick up your dog the minute they open. And don't forget the smell and fleas, they will ask you repeatedly to groom your dog the last day. I will never never board my dogs here again. I felt extremely guilty for leaving them in that dump. Avoid this place at all cost. read more

My wife and I boarded our Dutch Shepherd puppy here. We were at wits end because our puppy was "out of control" and would forget his name every time he was off leash. Lisa Rhodes, the resident dog trainer, was and is the best thing that has ever happened to us. In as little as three weeks, she transformed our puppy into the most amazing dog we have ever owned. He is obedient, happy, and well socialized. She continues to follow up with us both in person and via email. Her motto is very true: "A well trained dog is a happy dog". We just got our 1 year old mini schnauzer back from Shamrock Ranch today. We had her board there while we were on vacation and asked if she could have some training while she was there. Lisa was recommended to us by my sisters friend who had an insane dog who had a miracle transformation at Shamrock. Our "puppy" wasn't out of control or any real trouble but she wasn't great on a leash, she wasn't the best or most consistent listener, she was a little hyperactive around other dogs and she wouldn't quiet down when people came to the door. So again not the worst but I would not have claimed that she's well trained either. First night back - WOW AND TWO THUMBS UP to Lisa, our trainer and the Shamrock team. Our puppy is well and listening. I know that the rest is up to us to keep up with her training, being consistent etc but she's heeling on the leash, she's sit/staying, she's not pulling on the leash when we're just "free walking", and she seems calmer too. We haven't seen any other dogs yet but the difference in her leash behaviors is so great I feel confident she will be better when she sees other dogs.
