You should definitely preview any kennel before you board there. The kennels are basically in an outside structure similar to a barn w/ doggy doors that lead to an outside area. If there's any way to leave your pet w/ a friend, I highly encourage this first - but we all have times when we're in a tight pinch. My dog isn't a big fan of the kennels - and lets me know accordingly - but at least he was returned healthy and in good condition. read more

Over the years I've boarded my dogs in numerous places I've discovered that looks can be deceiving. Some of the most elegant looking places often hide the poor quality of care behind the scene. One place I used was a madhouse when I came to drop my dog off. Again, it looked impressive - a lot of brass and glass in the office with cool lighting and amazing dog photography, but there were way too many people either checking in or out. All the dogs were either nervous because they knew they were being dropped off, or overjoyed at being picked up - and we were all bunched into a small room which was stressful. There was one young girl behind the desk who was unexperienced and clearly overwhelmed. I love Shamrock Ranch. OK, there will be no brass and glass, but it is a perfect enviornment for a dog. The atmosphere is always relaxed and the people don't look at your dog as revenue. These are honest-to-God animal lovers. My last dog was an 80lb. sable and white rough collie who needed LOTS of meds. No problem with Shamrock, even when he was 12 years old and weak, I trusted them. read more

It *sounds* cute, and there are horses nearby, but the actual cages you'll be putting your pup in look like bomb shelters. Cracked, dirty concrete, a bare wooden platform for a "bed", and you have to stoop to even look into the tiny "runs." They padlock the dogs in these rickety old wooden huts at night and they handed me a rusted bucket to put water in for my dog. Needless to say, she gave me the "I will never do anything again if we make tracks outta here now" look and we split. (Maria the Manager then called and tried to charge me $100 for a "two-day" minimum stay -- $50/day for a serial killer hut? I don't think so, Maria.) Luckily, you won't fall for the Ranch romance, and there are other options in the city. Only upside - I hear they have a talented trainer on-site for special training purposes. read more

I have had 5 dogs now and failed at training 4 of them, so I decided to do something different with the 5th dog. A friend of mine who had sent his dog here for training highly recommended it. I thought nothing could be worse than my training, so I sent my dog there for 2 weeks of training and it was suggested she stay a 3rd week so I went for it and she came home a great dog at 9 months. When she went back for a follow up that comes with the training she was soooo excited to be there and to see Lisa. A year later she is a wonderful well mannered dog that gets many compliments thanks to Lisa's training. She will be returning for a week this summer for a refresher course and she will love every minute of it. It will be her vacation out in the field with her friends. read more

This review is overdue. I left my dogs last spring to be trained by Lisa while I went away on vacation. I had quite a few concerns about my terrier, mainly jumping, disobeying commands, etc. My larger dog is very timid and not good with strangers. Lisa took every concern of mine and addressed the issues. She was very informative and upfront about her training methods as well as her game plan for what she would be doing during their stay. When I returned they were happy and on their best behavior. Lisa gave me a rundown of what she did, what to do and how they were during their stay. She's one of the best trainers around and you can tell she truly is passionate about her work. Since then I have used their playcare services and my dogs love it. I am extremely happy with the results of our dog training classes with Lisa. My dog is an amazing animal but he was difficult for me to train on my own. Lisa sets straight forward rules that are easy for the dog and the owner to understand and follow. We have now completed the beginning and intermediate dog training classes together with Lisa and highly recommend them to anyone. You are sure to learn something new every time. My dog is overall a much more relaxed and happy being and I think it's because these classes teach you how to have better communication with each other, in addition to being a great opportunity to bond with your dog. Recently I started bringing my dog to 3 hr playgroup sessions once a week at Shamrock. Not only does he come home tired and happy but these sessions have also allowed him to become more comfortable around other dogs. He is learning great socialization skills and this has made it easier for me to walk him on a leash when other dogs are around. I just happened upon this yelp page when looking for Shamrocks number to call and make an appointment to leave my dog for the weekend. I am shocked at the bad reviews. I have never once experienced anything wrong with Shamrock. We use them frequently and I am a freak when it comes to the care of my beloved dog Louie! We have left him here several times and everytime we take him to Shamrock he gets really excited and happy. Yes, we pay for extra for walks thoughout the day too. But it's worth it. Can't put a price on my dogs happiness. When we get there, he always jumps right inside his kennel, tail wagging and seems happy to be there. If he didn't like it there, he would probably put the brakes on, like he does when he knows he is going to get a bath. When we pick him up he actually whines when we leave and stares out the back window as we pull away. There is no doubt in my mind that he enjoys his stays there. And frankly, one yelper said to leave your dog with a friend, I love all my friends but I feel much more secure knowing he is in a safe place and very well taken care of by professionals. Also, as far as training goes, we adopted our Louie at 16 mo. and he had no training at 110 lbs of big black lab. We took one of Lisa's classes and he is an exeptional dog now. He heel's off leash, comes, sits, stays, downs etc... best trained dog ever . Partly because he is a very smart Lab but mostly due to Lisa! We don't go many places without Louie mainly because he is SO WELL TRAINED and easy to travel with. But when we do, I only trust Shamrock. I can actually relax on a vacation knowing my baby is very well taken of care, kept busy and probably not missing me one bit. Although its not a high class doggie spa, I give it 5 stars for quality of care and the ease of mind i can feel when he is there. read more

This was our first time using Shamrock Ranch to board our large mixed breed dogs, and we had a good experience with them. The staff was pleasant and knowledgeable (they asked all the relevant questions that were necessary, i.e. behaviors during playtimes and feeding, etc.), the facilities were decent, and the prices were fair. Our dogs are not particularly fussy, so despite the bad reviews about the facilities, our dogs were fairly happy boarding there for a couple of nights. I suppose if your dog is used to a "Wag Hotel"-type of establishment, then maybe this isn't the place for you or your pooch. Shamrock Ranch suits us just fine and will most likely board our dogs with them again in the future. read more

I rarely write reviews but because of the minimal and poor reviews for dog boarding, I feel compelled to chime in with some good feedback. I am a resident of Pacifica and this is my third time boarding my English bulldog Gidget at Shamrock. This last one was the longest time away from her with 8 days of boarding so I was really nervous and sad about leaving her for so long. I have to admit, I was initially dreading taking her to Shamrock for over a week as our previous stays were just a couple of days and our dog walker friend ended up not able to take care of her like we had hoped. However, when I checked their website they seemed to have re-vamped their services a bit and they also recently remodeled their #200 kennel building. So,I was more encouraged. Gidget is a very active bulldog and requires a lot of attention. So, I selected their "Go all day" package which is 40 minute personal play time+a 20 minute leashed walk OR ~2 hr off leash group nature hike on the ranch with other dogs. This is on top of the basic boarding which includes two 10 minute potty walks around meal time. With how long she was staying, I wanted to alternate these two options because she was already used to going on off leash group hikes with her dog walker but was a little weary of how she would be with the other dogs as she can be snappy with some breeds. To my surprise, the desk staff must have passed on my concern because I got a very nice and thorough email from Serena while we were in Hawaii explaining how Gidget was doing and what she thought was best for her. She also included a picture of Gidget and a follow up email to my reply! We felt SOOO relieved and really was able to enjoy our vacation after that. Yes, it's NOT cheap. But, if you want the kennel stay to not feel like "doggy jail" then you have to pay for it, it's under your control. I think the bad reviews are because people don't really understand what a kennel is and assume their dog is going to be roaming around the ranch or something. I was rest assured Gidget was safe and not getting into anything she shouldn't be on top of having a fun active stay. If you are a dog person like me, then I think the price is totally worth the peace of mind. I do not know their names but all the desk staff and two different caretakers I met up at the kennel building were very friendly (more so than our previous stays). Sure, next to having a baby cam in the kennel or a hidden GoPro mounted on her, I can't know definitively how she was doing every second. But, picking up Gidget looking fit, happy, and running to every staff person she could find to say Good bye, my guess is she was treated more than fine. I drove in after they had just closed..It's like a pet boarding version of the Shining. Dilapidated and old rotting looking buildings. The place has an abandoned uncared for feel. I had a phone interaction with a guy who was not terribly friendly about boarding a dog for that night. He was gone when we arrived and the place was locked up. The only person on site was the groomer who said everyone had left for the day. Apparently they don't have night staff. I'm glad they were closed.. CREEPY and SCARY. DO NOT LEAVE YOUR PET THERE UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES. read more

I have a wonderful deaf pittie boy who needed some extra help. I brought him to Shamrock Ranch.... to trainer Lisa Rhodes. As sad as I was to leave him it was OK. We left a dog bed and some blankets/ he had an indoor outdoor kennel.. and he had training with Lisa every day. He loved the people there and they loved him. Lisa loved him and worked with him and taught us what they did and how to follow thru. A refresher meeting is scheduled the middle of this month. I am very pleased with what he has learned... with the training and care... with the staff that seemed to like him alot and recognized the loving dog he is.... and everything Lis Rhodes taught him and us his guardians. I had a great experience boarding my 2 dogs here for 5 days. They were able to be together the entire time and play with the other dogs during the day as well. The accommodations are rustic, like taking your dog to a huge farm and what dog wouldn't love that? I love my dogs like my children and feel Shamrock is far more sensible for them than a hotel suite with a TV they probably won't even notice. As far as the complaints people have about their dogs being stinky and dirty when picked up, um, HELLO? they were in a kennel! Besides you get your last day for free if you schedule a bath for them on pick up day, so why WOULDN'T you take advantage of this? Lastly, the staff was great with my boys and this is a family run place that is far more personal than some of the pet hotels I checked out. I'll definitely be taking my boys back there next time I need to board them and highly recommend Shamrock Ranch for anyone. read more

Well, Its taken me a few weeks to calm down to be able to write this review. I kenneled my dogs there a few weeks ago, and when I picked them up, I noticed my old great dane walking very slow. He normally is very tired after staying there, but this time, something was different. I watched him, he was very lethargic and having trouble breathing. I ended up having to start an IV on him and hydrate him! ( Ive had alot of expereince with dogs) I called the kennels the next day, and they insisted they didnt see anything wrong with my old dog! They asked me if I wanted the Manager to call me, and Im still waiting for that call. Needless to say, I will never take my dogs there again. read more

Not sure how $53 is appropriate for only 2 bathroom walks in a day. If your dog has to relieve themselves more than that, they're stuck in a kennel and have to go in there unless you want to pay an additional fee. I boarded both of my dogs there (they stayed in the same kennel). Both came home with diarrhea and one is now vomiting. We weren't informed of how long they had diarrhea for. I understand that stress can induce it but our one pups bottom was red and so dirty with stool. The other pup came home with a red, inflamed and swollen paw pad with stool all on that same leg. The water bucket that was in the stall was bigger than one of my dogs. I had to call and request for them to put a smaller water bowl in their kennel so that they would be able to drink. The second I dropped them off; from the front desk to seeing where they board the dogs... I regretted my decision. Past places we have boarded (in other states) were so welcoming to the dogs and actually interacted with them, making us feel relieved and comfortable leaving them there. There was no interaction between staff and dogs at Shamrock that we saw when dropping off and picking up our dogs. But we were in a pinch and had nowhere else to take them. I do not plan on going back nor would I recommend sending your dog there for boarding. read more

Just picked up our dog from a 2+ week stay at Shamrock Ranch. She was soooo happy and had the best bath ever! They actually took the time to blow out her curls - she looks better than ever! We have taken our two lab mixes there a few times over the past few years and it is a good place to go. It is an old school Kennel (i.e. not your new high end play time for poochie) but works for us as one of our dogs is aggressive with other dogs so the open play area boarding would not work. Plus I trust that when I say "my dog is aggressive with other dogs" understand what that means and will not mix him with other dogs! It is reasonably priced and is a better situation then some other options I used in past (I took my dog to Wags Hotel and it is basically a depressing kennel (small cages inside) unless you pay for high end own dog room). Shamrock has a nice open area, and I pay to have my dogs taken on walks. They have taken good care of my dogs and I have/would use again. Also, we took Wilson for dog training and Lisa was excellent with him so would recommend that as well. read more

Had a lovely first Doggie Social hour with Bazinga. One employee with the small dogs overseeing play and another employee on her off day with her own dog. Both were very watchful and dog savvy; interrupted play as it escalated, and made sure the dogs were engaging with toys or each other in positive ways. Looking forward to going back. read more

I have boarded several of my dogs at Shamrock and was surprised to read some of the negative reviews. Sure the dogs smell stinky when they come home but I don't believe it is from lack of care. I have always been asked if I'd like the dogs bathed before pick-up. When you pick up a kid from camp they are stinky too. As to the stress factor just being away is always stressful for them just as it is for us to be away for our little dears. My guys always come home healthy and I have been happy with the care there. The dog trainer Lisa is great too. She has helped me with some tough problems. I find her to be generous with her time and expertise as well as patient. I give her program all the stars there are and then some. read more

I never thought I would drop my dog off for a two-week in board training but here I am writing this review about doing just that. Ace our 3 year old, 90 pound black lab is a great dog but he is very strong and his recall well basically he had none prior to this training course. After scheduling this training I was very anxious. Leaving my dog in the care of people I had never met let alone for two weeks was something I was questioning. I have friends who work at Shamrock and even live there who highly recommended Lisa Rhodes the trainer and reassured me the facility and people truly care about and for the dogs. D day arrived and I drove Ace down, we live literally less than 5 minutes from the ranch. Everything was going smoothly and it was time to take Ace to the Lodge (where he would be kenneled). I pull up to the lodge and I am met by Mike who was very nice and escorted me to Ace's home for the next two weeks, again all was going well. the first thing I noticed was how clean this place was, no smell of dog, no over powering smell of any cleaners, just a very fresh clean smell. The kennel is a large space with both indoor and outdoor enclosed area. I was grateful because his stay fell on the 4th of July and in Pacifica fireworks are huge and Ace is not a fan. We go back to get Ace and we bring him in, I start to break down but trying to hold it in, . I am not sure if Mike sensed it or not but thankfully he just put Ace in and closed the door. It was very difficult to leave Ace there but I knew it would be worth it and well let me tell you it was. This is literally day one of Ace being home and we are following what Lisa taught Ace and us and things are going well so far. I checked in on Ace twice during his stay and in Lisa's responses I could tell she knew exactly who Ace was and about his personality. I am so grateful for her dedication to training Ace to be the best dog he can be and I am looking forward to continuing that training with Ace so that he will be able to live his best life. The staff at Shamrock were very kind and friendly. I requested specific things from them during Ace's stay and they followed through with everything I asked. We brought our 3-year-old dog, Corwin, to Lisa for 2 and a half weeks of board and train after many trainers, classes, late-night googling, thousands of dollars in vet fees and anti-anxiety medication to try to get a handle on his anxious, guarding behaviors. The Corwin we met after his time with Lisa is significantly happier, calmer and such a better listener. His guarding behaviors are still there under the surface, but the beauty of working with Lisa is that he now has a strong training background we can utilize to work through anything that comes up and the support of Lisa to help us along the way. We had no real way to correct our dog that was completely indifferent to any past corrections we tried. The miracle is that we have a way to correct him now and he is learning what we will and won't tolerate. I see a future with my dog now and that was hard to imagine a few weeks ago (we have a baby on the way and were very worried about his guarding with children in the house). I love Shamrock Ranch. I have had 3 dogs over the course of fifteen years that I have boarded there. My dogs were always treated well and taken good care of. The people that I dealt with were very personable and accomodating. My last dog (died at home 1 year ago) had special needs and required meds daily. They always took good care of him and called me immediately, wherever I was, if even a suspicion of a problem developed due to the complicated nature of my dog. He was always so happy to go there and perked up when we got within range of the ranch. , I hope to get another dog soon and will return to kennels when I do. read more

not sure what all the bad hype is about. we've had our dog trained and boarded at shamrock; no complaints. the training... lisa is the bomb! seriously. she knows what she is doing, for sure. our dog stayed for 3 weeks and came back so well trained it was unbelievable; and not an ounce less wiggly either. lisa had us back for two visits and is still available to talk to us about questions or concerns we have. when its time for dog #2, we'll be heading back to shamrock for training, for sure. the boarding... rustic, to be sure, but its fine enough. our dog was there for 3 weeks for boarding/training. she then went back for overnight boarding and was happy there then too. grooming... awesome! your dog will get dirty here, both in the kennels and in the yard playing, so get the grooming. they are so good there! read more

Shamrock Ranch is the best! Trainer: Lisa - Took our aggressive rescue dog and turned him into a socially acceptable animal who can play with other dogs, people and even children! Lisa has continued to offer her advice and guidance. Another dog saved! Grooming: Linda - Awesome and professional our dogs love her and after grooming they look show ready. One of our dogs is a rough and tumble little Am. Eskimo, love mud.... Linda transforms him into a lovely white puff ball...amazing! Kennels: The buildings look old, however, the kennels are very well maintained, clean and heated. The dogs are taken out for walks and play time every day. After our vacation our dogs were clean, well fed and appeared very happy... (at our request) they were kept in one larger kennel together, with their own beds and special toys. We love Shamrock Ranch and have referred several friends that have sent their dogs as well for training and/or boarding and are now regulars. We inherited a year-old feisty little fox terrier mix who is quite a handful. After nipping a couple of people, we decided we needed the help of a truly concentrated training program. The cost of 3 weeks of training with Lisa was well worth it and totally changed the temperament and behavior of our sassy boy. Additionally, the setting of the ranch is a great outdoor experience with lots of play and hikes - far superior to the average kennel experience. There are now fancy little doggy hotels but they make no sense to me. My dog doesn't need a TV or cushy bed. He needs the great outdoors with lots of activity in a setting where he is safe and well cared for. Highly recommend training and boarding at the ranch! read more

Lisa Rhodes is amazing. She took my Jack Russell Terrier with high energy high intelligence and stubborn streak and managed to train him yet keep his personality. I brought my puppy home and he listened to all the commands that he was taught. I'm really impressed. Lisa really understands dogs how they think act, as well as understanding how owners think and act. She explains how to manage your pup based on this knowledge. It makes it really simple then! Lisa also has follow up sessions at no extra cost. She is available for issues that come up, and questions you may have long after your doggie stay. Last she and the staff really get to know your dog, you can tell by the way they speak of them. I received photos when I started missing my babe. Shamrock Ranch is so clean you would not know there was a single pet there. A vets office had more odor- not in a bad way. I was very impressed with this. I have two friends that brought their dogs to Shamrock Ranch so I knew I would not be disappointed. read more

This is a long overdue review. My girlfriend and I sent our two dogs (pit mixes) to Shamrock Ranch to train with Lisa. I was skeptical in what someone could do in 2 weeks to my extremely wild dogs, however Lisa came through with flying colors. No more leash pulling, no more running away, great with recalls, great with obedience commands, and overall much better dogs. The experience we had at Shamrock was fantastic and highly recommended for anyone needing some extra help with their pets. So I have heard this place is the best for dog training and it may be.... I have tried to get my dogs enrolled for two months. I was told they didn't set a date for September yet, but once they do they will call. I guess they didn't set a date because I received nothing. So either they set dates of training when they feel like it or just didn't bother calling me. If you have puppies and need puppy training you can't wait months. Terrible communication on their part. You should preview this kennel before you board there. I did not and was heartbroken when I left my three dogs and my cat to go to a wedding. I was gone eight days and the bill was $1,200! They only give meds twice a day and my older dog needed her meds three times a day. They told me that they had a geriatric kennel, just a square cement kennel with a small step outside, not what I expected. My old dog (13 years) was afraid to go in and out. They put a choke collar on her (I'm assuming they put this on her after they broke her tail) and I'm sure it was to drag her in and out. Now, she is unable to get up on her own, we have to help her up. I suspect that they have injured her hips. The kennels are basically converted chicken coops, not modern and not very nice. I will definently preview the kennels before boarding my pets again. Oh yes, and all of my pets smelled so bad. One dog's paws were yellow with urine. We have bathed all the pets and our hands still stink even though we have washed them several times. read more

No. No. No, never again. A family emergency forced us to make last minute accommodations here for our pooch. I asked to see the facility before leaving and was broken hearted to see the 4 x 6 cement cell my boy would be kept in, still (and continually) wet from being hosed out. With no other immediate options I reluctantly left him with his bed (which they "lost" and was never returned or refunded), only to find out they had no intention of removing him from that cell for exercise or to socialize with other dogs - if you want your dog to stretch his legs that'll run you an additional $8/day for a 20 minute escape. $8 for 20 minutes. I would not, repeat, NOT use them again. I must say I couldn't care less if the facility was an historic heritage site - I'm more concerned about my animal's well being. He was filthy and smelled terrible after his stay there. I recommend Sarah, of Pacifica Pet Care - not a cheap option, but at least you get value for your money - I've seen her at Ft. Funston running with the pack and my dog absolutely loves her. read more

This is the worst place ever to send your pet while you are away. I did it one time out of desperation and my beautiful akita stayed there for about 10 days, When we brought her home she was traumatized The place is like a prison, one little cell with a small attached outside pen. All concrete, cold and hardly any human contact except for feedings. No interaction with other animals. That is where they stay all day and all night unless you pay extra for walks, which are no more than 10 or 15 minute walk on premises. I have spoken to many people who have boarded their pets at Shamrock and they all say the same thing, that they will never leave their pets there again. If your animal is used to staying outside all day long by itself and is not neurotic because of it, by all means leave your dog there. But if your dog is used to sleeping in the house with family, lots of walks and outdoor activities, this place would be considered a virtual prison and the dog feels as if it is being punished. . My dog was miserable when I got home and I will never forgive myself for making her stay there! read more

This is just a review for the dog boarding and dog care facilities (not dog training which seems quite good). This facility has soooo much potential just given its location and amount of land available, but if you care for your dog you really do not want to board here. Read the bad reviews, there are way too many. Also, I walk by Shamrock all-the-time, so this is first hand knowledge. * Dog kennels are like jails, and you can hear the dogs barking for attention especially in the mornings and night. Look at the kennels before you board here. * Dog a la carte boarding prices might be ok for a Ritz Carlton; this is NOT a Ritz Carlton and these prices are sky high for what you get. * The short walks for boarded dogs, are often walks up and down the Shamrock ranch road. These walks are so short it is shameful to charge for them. * If you do the basic boarding, then your dog is essentially in a kennel for 23 hours out of every day and night. * The doggie play area is a newer fenced in sand/dirt pit; looks like a very cheap dog park and it is obvious they did not want to spend any money on it. This place is horrible. I sent my dog here for training for three weeks during my honeymoon and returned to find my dog 20 pounds lighter and so sick. His dog bed was soaking wet and covered in urine and bird poop. He collapsed just days later from such severe blood loss due to an intestinal infection that he picked up from the kennel. He was in the vets ICU so long we had a $4000 vet bill. The staff doesn't keep a close enough watch over the dogs condition or kennel. We nearly lost our dear dog.
