I started with her for her life coaching after I read her amazing and inspiring books It's Never Too Late to Be Yourself and The Manna Paradigm Shift. She should be on ALL THE TALK SHOWS!! She also has an established legacy as a freedom fighter, and her evolution and work only continues to grow. She is a wonderful example of how to listen to yourself. She wasted no time getting to the heart of things to help me for the life coaching sessions. We ended up going back to some things that were snagging me up before moving forward, even doing a past life regression session to clear things out. In short, she has all the skills, but the most important thing for me has been her inclusive spirituality at the center of her work. I struggled with looking at my bills and avoided looking carefully at my financial situation. I'm embarrassed to admit I dodged reading my mail and would let it pile on my desk for weeks. I also struggled to plan my meals and incorporate an exercise routine into my life. Adam helped me create habits and lifestyle changes that have improved my life tremendously. Every session began with an update on my life. During the first few sessions we looked at my skills and interests. We figured out why my current approach wasn't working. We then tried different approaches until I was able to sustain them over long periods of time. Now they are habits I am proud of. I have paid off my student loans, I'm eating healthier and exercising regularly. Adam offered lots of insight into my situation. He also had lots of ideas and tools to make life more manageable. If you have a duel diagnosis I really do not recommend using Melissa as your therapist. Not only did she misidentify the core issue (another therapist agreed that her judgement was poor), she was contacted specifically to do EMDR as she is certified to do, (apparently, by a website that no longer seems to exist) and instead she used a modality she preferred. When confronted, she claimed there were "elements" of EMDR when in fact she used zero bilateral stimulation of any kind, no eye movement, nothing. Having now experienced proper EMDR I can say she misled me and wasted my time. I came to her for an APA-certified, scientifically proven therapy - not a therapy that only has anecdotal evidence. Proper EMDR should only take a few months and this woman dragged out our relationship this way for almost a year. She cost me precious time because she decided she knew best. Not only that, instead of recognizing my family as the ongoing cause of and genesis of trauma, she actively made excuses for them and pulled the very invalidating "but they're your family" reasoning when I was considering pulling away. I found this invalidating and frustrating even before I discovered her dishonesty. She comes from a very actively Christian background which I had no idea about when I hired her and so I am unsurprised that she defended the family unit above her client's best interest. In fact, if you're native or a person of color, you should know she still has her work on a racist, colonialist "mission" proudly displayed on her linkedin. In fact, I noticed that she changed the summary to say that what she was doing there was "home building" which is interesting because months ago it said she was there "church raising" - so I guess my email pointing out the shame of celebrating that extremely problematic thing inspired her to cover her tracks. Pretty gross. So not only does she believe that she gets to decide for her patients despite their specific and repeatedly stated wishes, choosing a non-APA certified therapy over a certified one, she's always believed the white savior knows best. People like her are insidious because they don't immediately present as bad therapists but anyone considering her should be very aware that she comes from a Christian background and she does as she pleases, at least to this POC client, while missing the deeper causes of trauma, focusing only on the surface stuff that she was spoon fed, rather than intuiting the true causes as another therapist immediately did. I want my year back and I will never get it but at least I can warn others.

I couldn't remember the last time I felt peaceful or had a good night's rest. I had tried meditation retreats. I had tried yoga. I had tried unisom. I am not generally a fan of podcasts and self-help frameworks often make my eyes glaze over, but Katie's early episodes had me absolutely hooked. Don't be fooled by her casual and easy-going (even sometimes bubbly!) manner... it belies an incredibly sharp ability to articulate some very squishy and abstract topics. So I reached out. Over the course of the next 12 months, Katie patiently worked through my ups and downs. Every session, I was lobbing new challenges at her, and she was able to bring things into focus, challenge my thinking, and hold firm on my behalf when she sensed me being too ready to compromise on the things that I needed but couldn't even yet identify.
